♫ 00; ↠ TEAR DROPS ON MY GUITAR-(prologue)
↳ my heart beats for you-a scaramouche smau
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The door of the CRUX swung open, the familiar jingle of the door chime sounded as you entered the building. You were greeted by some familiar faces frantically running around the room.
Some employees were rushing around, frantically trying to salvage what they could from the flood waters that had recently devastated the CRUX. Guitars lay broken and waterlogged on the floor, while sheet music and CDs floated in the murky puddles.
Kokomi and Furina were holding rusty buckets, and they placed them underneath leaky spots from the ceiling. Yoimiya was helping Mona move a busted keyboard outside, and Lumine was holding a box full of old records and CDs.
"Oi!"
You turned around to the source of the voice, it was another one of the employees. She had dark hair and deep blue eyes, she would've been awfully pretty if she wasn't too busy scowling at you.
"Hey Furong..."
"Don't "hey Furong" me!"
She shoved a heavy box in your arms, and another smaller (but still very heavy!) box on top of the one you were already carrying. "And get out of the door frame! Being Beidou's favorite won't earn you any special treatment from me."
"Speaking of which, do you know where-"
Furong stormed off to scold more of her fellow co-workers before you could finish your question.
"-she is..."
Lumine passed by you, her hands also full.
"Don't mind her, she's just jealous."
"Well who wouldn't be?"
Lumine chuckled before gesturing to the back of the store. "We're supposed to move the CD and record boxes to the studio, Beidou wants us to sort through all of them."
You nodded and let Lumine lead the way, your vision was obscured due to the boxes in your arms, so you had to rely on Lumine's directions to make your way into the CRUX's music studios.
"Archons, I don't know how much longer I can hold these things. Why the fuck are these boxes so heavy? They're CDs!"
You complained as you almost slammed yourself into a shelf for the hundredth time.
"Tell me about it." you heard Lumine groan. "I should've forced Aether to come, could've unloaded all this work on him."
"Like he'd actually do all that for you."
"Never said I had to be the one he was working for⁓"
You could hear the smirk in her voice, even though you couldn't see her expression. Your face started heating up, you were suddenly grateful for the boxes hiding your head. Lumine adored poking fun at her brother's crush on you, she'd lessened up with the jokes after your break-up, but alas, there was no escape from her wrath.
"Shut up..." you muttered, your face growing redder by the second.
"What? It's true ya know." she continued, she must've noticed your silence, which she mistook for discomfort rather than embarrassment.
"Okay, I'll stop."
You heard a door creak, which must have been Lumine opening the door to one of the studios in the building. You set down the boxes, feeling relief from the absence of the heavy objects in your arms.
You looked around the room, the studio wasn't a professional recording studio, not by any means. It was a simple room with a few power outlets and speakers, but it was more than enough for you and the rest of C✧LESTIA.
You and Lumine sat down on the floor, taking out some of the contents of the boxes and laid them out in front of you. Lumine sorted the piles by genre, while you sorted them by colour.
"You know, maybe this isn't so bad, there are only a few boxes, so it won't take as much time as I thought-"
Lumine's hopeful thoughts were cut short as Furong and her co-worker Xinyan, along with several other employees dropped ten more boxes in the room (and big ones at that!).
"Thanks you guys, you're the best!" Xinyan gave you a big thumbs up as she exited the studio with the rest of her co-workers.
"-I take that back" Lumine sighed, at the pile of brown cardboard cubes. "I really should've forced Aether to come here..."
The two of you heard the studio door creak open again.
"You girls need help?"
It was Furina! Along with all the other C✧LESTIA members too! The others joined you and Lumine on the floor and helped sort the records and CD's. You and the girls chatted for a bit, brief small-talk about school work and a few rumours that have been going around about your classmates.
You heard Yoimiya groan as she was rummaging through a box for a certain CD. "Lumineee! Why didn't you just ask your brother to come! He would've done all this for us!"
"Believe me, I wish I did." she sighed, and glanced over to you.
"Okay, what's with you guys and using Aether for free labour?" you joked. You had lost count of all the times Lumine had baited the poor boy into doing favours for her under the pretext that "(Y/N) would be so grateful if you did this for her!"
"He's my brother, and he still has a crush on you, who happens to be my best friend, who wouldn't take advantage of that?"
"He doesn't have feelings for me Lumine-"
"Ooo, who doesn't have feelings for (Y/N)?"
You whipped your head around after hearing a familiar voice come from behind you.
"Beidou!"
You stood up and tackled the older woman into a hug, she returned the gesture, ruffling your hair while doing so.
"Hey kid!" she pulled away from the hug to squish your cheeks together, which made your lips pout. "I missed you, ya know."
She looked towards the rest of C✧LESTIA, who were still on the floor, sorting CD's and records. "Thanks for doing this for me you guys., I appreciate it."
Suddenly, you could hear Mona clear her throat from her side of the room. "We're getting paid right?"
"Mona!" Kokomi exclaimed scolding her friend.
"What?"
"Nah it's fine, but I don't think I can afford to pay you guys properly, sorry 'bout that."
Mona sulked, clearly disappointed in the lack of rewards, though her expression quickly changed after Kokomi swatted her shoulder, clearly ashamed by the astrologist's behaviour.
"No Miss Beidou, it's fine really, you've already done so much for us." Furina said, expressing her gratefulness, making up for Mona's lack thereof.
"You letting us practice here is more than enough!" she continued. Furina glanced around the room, just realizing the terrible condition the room was in. "We'll still be able to practice here, right...?" she asked.
Beidou's expression darkened slightly, as she looked up at the ceiling, observing the leaks, and cracks, even without the flood affecting it, the studio was always in terrible shape.
She took a breath, "Sorry girls, but you'll probably need to find a new place to practice, and to perform."
Suddenly, you and your fellow bandmates let out a chorus of "What? Why?"s and several other expressions of disappointment and grief.
"This whole room looks like it's going to collapse any second, the last thing I need is a lawsuit because one of you guys got hurt." she sighed again. "I'm sorry girls."
"But hey! I'm sure Furina can use her actress connections to find you guys a new venue."
"I don't think the Opera Epiclese is looking for amateur rock bands, Beidou." Yoimiya said as she sighed, still sorting through the contents of the boxes.
You, and the others heard a faint voice in the distance calling for Beidou, it was probably Xinyan or Furong asking her for help.
"I'm coming!" she shouted back, before she left the room, she gave you another hug, this one longer and more tender.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll figure something out, you always do."
She opened the creaky studio door once more and waved goodbye to you and the rest of C✧LESTIA.
You decided to not tell Beidou how lost you were, and how there was no way you guys could afford to rent another studio, much less find a new place for gigs.
"I'm sure you'll figure something out!"
You hoped that she was right.

Genshin Impact AU where everything stays exactly the same, except that Ushi is the size of an actual bull.
My guy Itto is casually hurling 500+ kilograms of beef at hilichurls at a daily rate. You know what this is also an AU where Itto has actual muscles instead of a drawn-on abs he has in reality. Everybody who deserves muscles gets muscles. Captain Beidou can crush me with her arms and thighs. Claymore users deserve it.
The Perilous Trails questline runs a little differently because instead of Itto punching a wall he rides Ushi and rams it open, thus being awake for the whole 'Xiao tries to sacrifice himself' scheme

Genshin ships: stock market update (Fontaine Act 1)
(Warning: May contain spoilers for character appearances and dynamics in (Chapter 4 Act 1) Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur.)
Overnight trades saw Lyney/Traveller and Lynette/Traveller go up by a modest 3% overnight, with movement in the futures market for Lyney/Traveller.
Interestingly, trading volume on platonic Lynette&Traveller has increased nearly tenfold on the back of market analysts revising the potential untapped market of "fellow long-suffering silent companion" dynamics.
The spread for Lyney/Traveller has widened, indicating anticipated volatility in friends-to-ex-friends-to-lovers options. For those with an appetite for risk we weakly recommend a BUY OR HOLD.
Meanwhile, there's been renewed interest in bluechip favourite Chilumi (and the correlated Lumichi index), on the back of the first serious official updates since 2.2. Our recommendation is HOLD.
Aether/Neuvillette: BUY BUY BUY
Furina/Traveller is picking up steam. The Aether variation has strong potential among the het/bi fanbase. The Lumine variation has extra je ne sais quoi due to fanon characterisation of Lumine as the more hard headed of the twins, nicely contrasting Furina's bratty persona. However, we advise caution as consensus of interpretation on Furina will not settle until 4.2 at the earliest. HOLD for Furiaether, BUY OR HOLD for Furilumi.
Platonic Furina+Neuvillette is proving popular with the same comedy + found family consumers that brought Hu Tao+Zhongli to fame. However the market is more limited than explicitly romantic ship markets, so expect high volatility. HOLD.
Moniotte/Furina is a meme stock, similar to Furong, Narzan, and Baishi. We recommend SELL outside of cheap punchlines.
A slight correction in the Clorivia price as Act 1 fails to provide any new data. Regardless, we still recommend BUY OR HOLD in anticipation of future dividends.
Relatedly, the unexpected ship Navia/Traveller is picking up steam. BUY, with an eye to sell if growth is not sustained.
Crack ship Charlotte/Truth has not seen any serious new changes. Recommendation: SELL.

For @whumptober2021 Day 12:
No. 12 - IT’LL BE FUN, THEY SAID torture | made to watch | begging
Kazuha was already in a hopeless situation; he never wanted Beidou to join him there.
Characters: Kazuha & Beidou Tags: Graphic Depiction of Torture (not gore-y but enough that it could be a tw; it's more sound and smell), Burning, mentioned/implied human trafficking, PTSD, minor dissociation Rating: upper T Words: 1868
--
“Don’t look. You don’t have to look.”
“Aw, the captain’s embarrassed.” Rough hands grabbed his hair and yanked Kazuha’s head upwards, just in case he heeded the captain’s call. Not that Kazuha was able to. He couldn’t pull his eyes away if he tried. Especially since the only reason Captain Beidou was in this situation was because of him.
“Keep going,” the man above him commanded. Said man, hand still firm on his head, bent down to his ear. “We’ll stop when you tell us where it is,” he promised cruelly.
And that was precisely the problem. “It doesn’t exist,” Kazuha answered yet again, struggling fruitlessly against his bonds. “Please. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The man scoffed, shoving his head until Kazuha crashed into the stone floor. His hands, cuffed behind his back, were still tethered to the wall, so he didn’t have the leverage to right himself. Not with his own body as battered as it was. Now, he couldn’t see Beidou as well, but that was what she wanted, anyway.
The leader seemed to realize this, because he yanked him up by the hair again, back to a kneeling position. “Fine, be that way, rich brat. But the longer you keep that Kaedehara treasure from us, the rougher shape ‘yer cap’n’s gonna’ be in.”
They almost left Inazuma unscathed. Almost. Kazuha hated that his homeland brought him so much trepidation, and he hated that the stormy winds proved him correct, yet again. Long after the Vision Hunt Decree had been reneged, and long after the Crux had left those war-filled waters behind, they came back to what Kazuha had hoped would be a more peaceful Inazuma. This time, it was purely for legal trade. No smuggled people, no mercenary ventures—just honest trade. Kazuha almost didn’t come, but the warrant for his arrest had been dropped by the Shogun herself, and he had been…curious. Hopeful. Even if Kazuha knew that he could never return to the way things were, he could at least step on Inazuman soil and be at peace.
The problem this time was not the Shogunate, however. It was the ronin.
Kazuha had been alone at the time, just to the side of the port, when they got the jump on him. He had sensed them coming, just in the nick of time to keep from being completely ambushed, but he had been overpowered all the same. The cause became quickly apparent. The ronin weren’t aiming for a lonesome traveler they assumed had worthwhile possessions: they wanted him.
The leader—the shaggy-headed man that smelled like burnt otogi—made his aims clear from the moment Kazuha woke up bound in a cellar of their possession, his Vision nowhere near his grasp. They searched for the so-called “Kaedehara treasure,” which the leader was sure existed despite Kazuha’s insistence to the contrary. His clan had lost everything, and if they hadn’t, his aunt wouldn’t have been as…cross…as she had been. Nevertheless, the ronin attempted to beat the answer out of him, unwilling to believe his words as truth.
He wished some sliver of his family fortune did exist, solely so he could use it to appease them. It was bad enough when they beat Kazuha for information he did not have, but now, they had the captain too.
At some point in between his blackouts, he had been moved to the corner of the room and Beidou had taken his place. He had no idea how they managed to get her, because not only had she been in the thick of Ritou’s harbor, but Beidou was a paramount of battle.
Unless… because they did their research for combating him, perhaps they did research on her as well.
He could try to contrive reason from the predicament, but it would change nothing. The ronin determined that Kazuha could not be broken himself, so they forced him to watch Beidou receive their treatment on his behalf.
Beidou’s arms hung from chains attached to the ceiling, and by now, she was on her knees and completely at the mercy of the chain’s length. He could hear her teeth grinding as she took the lashes with as little noise as possible. Just like for him, she could do nothing against the torture but to bear it—but even that, she did better. Beidou caught his eye and gave a shaky smile, before turning her neck and spitting at the leader. As always, her aim was impeccable.
“You grunts want money, yeah?” she panted, blood in her grin. “Well, the Crux doesn’t do ransoms. They do do revenge, though, so I’d keep that in mind.”
The leader punched her in the jaw, clearly angered by her goading. “Don’t be too sure about that, missy. There’s more than just your fleet that’ll be willing to pay for ya’.” He glared over his shoulder at Kazuha. “You too, brat, if you don’t start fessin’ up.”
“I told you, I don’t know.”
The leader just huffed angrily. “Still so stubborn. Boys.”
At the command, there was a clinking. Kazuha dared to look, and if he wasn’t already dehydrated, he might have vomited at the notion.
The ronin wore thick gloves, and in his hands was a red-hot stake.
Beidou stilled, her single fuchsia eye locking onto him. “Kid, don’t look,” she whispered, and this time, it truly sounded like a plea. He wasn’t sure for whose sake it was, but knowing Beidou’s lack of shame, he suspected it was for him.
He knew why.
He knew why even as he screwed his eyes shut before the bar made contact with her back. Not looking helped nothing, however. This time, Beidou screamed, and even through it he heard the sizzling of flesh.
Smelled the burning of flesh.
Lightning hummed through the air. Burnt skin and blood hung heavy. He grabbed the Vision in spite of it.
They kept going, and Kazuha was completely helpless to it. Again. (He always could only watch.) Flesh kept burning. Beidou kept screaming, though the cadence rose and fell with the shortness of her breath.
Physical eyes shut tightly, his mind’s eye betrayed him instead. He saw Tomo die, over and over again, and he heard Beidou’s pain. Eventually it switched. Imagined images of Beidou underneath the Shogun’s sword and the sounds of Tomo’s last, dying laugh.
Somehow, he was grateful when the ronin leader noticed his lack of present awareness, yanking his head back up. “If you hate watching so much, then tell me where the damn thing is!”
Beidou was covered in blood and burns. Marred by black and red. Kazuha focused only for a moment, but the image inscribed itself into his mind, nonetheless.
(Kazuha had a good memory.)
“Well?” the ronin asked, impatience rising.
“I-if it exists, I don’t know about it. I can’t help you,” he responded, just as he had before. But his desperation rose with the man’s impatience. He pushed words past the catch in his throat. “But you have me. Just… Just do what you want with me. S-sell my sword, my Vision—sell me, just let her go.”
The ronin grabbed him by the jaw. “You have to do better than that, brat. You’re jus’ offering stuff we already have.”
His head was dropped roughly, and Kazuha made no move to correct it. He let it hang, the culmination of his feebleness and hopelessness settling into his bones. He had no ideas. No solutions. The wind was stale in the cellar, and there was no sun or moon to witness. It was just Kazuha—not even a Kaedehara—wishing desperately that Beidou wouldn’t be dragged down with him.
He couldn’t lose anybody else. He couldn’t watch anybody else leave.
But he was going to.
As always, there was nothing he could do. Nothing but watch.
“They’re down here!”
Next came a cacophony of shouting and clanging, and for the first time, Kazuha could not follow it. Everything sounded like screaming. Like swinging metal chains and burning stakes. Sizzling flesh. Cracked swords. Fading Visions.
Hands grabbed him, messing with he chains and digging into his wrists, and he felt some relief. It was his turn, again.
“Kazuha— Kid, twinkle toes, you gotta’ look at me, ‘kay?”
He wasn’t being dragged. Did they change their mind?
Small hands held the side of his head. “Come on, leaflet, you can’t die on me, ya’ hear? Not when Yin’s busy. The Cap’n will kill me for sure.”
Slowly, Kazuha became aware, though he wished to remain ignorant. The air still smelt like stagnant burnt flesh. He leaned over on reflex and vomited, but it was only bile. Everything else was already gone.
“Shit, twinkle toes,” she breathed, and Kazuha finally placed the figure holding onto him. It was Furong.
With a gasp, his eyes flew open. Had more of the Crux’s fleet been taken? However, the sight did not match his fears. Instead, the ronin were on the ground, and a combination of Crux crew members and Shogunate officers crowded the cellar instead. Yinxing, their surgeon, was huddled over Beidou with an emergency kit.
He sagged against Furong, aware now that his hands were free. Not that he could find the strength to use them.
Somebody cleared their throat. A Shogunate officer stood over him—threateningly, resolutely—awkwardly, holding out his anemo Vision. “This is yours, correct?”
Kazuha couldn’t answer. He couldn’t find the words.
“It is,” Furong answered for him, taking the proffered item. She pressed it into his hand, and he felt the cool breeze once more. The relief it provided was nothing, however, compared to what he felt when he saw the same officer gently place an electro Vision next to Beidou. To his surprise, her hand reached forward, and she grasped it. The sight of a shimmering purple Vision, firmly held by the hand it belonged to, filled him with more relief than he had felt when the Kaedehara estate finally fell.
The officer moving out of the way, he saw a glimpse of Beidou’s head turning toward him. “H-hey kid, it’s okay,” she assured with a smile. “It’s over.”
That’s when the relief swelled and rose within him until it burst. Kazuha rarely cried—he rarely could afford to, and even then, he knew it changed nothing. There were tears, of course, like those stinging ones he lost to the wind that he shed for Tomo, or the tight ones that pricked the corner of his eyes when he was in pain. This was different. Without warning, it broke all at once, unfettered and uncontained. It tore at his battered throat and it made it hard to breathe, but the feeling was overwhelming, and the sensation stopped the intake of burnt or the memory of screams.
Furong helped him move, and soon, he was within Beidou’s reach. Her other arm was in Yinxing’s grasp. She dropped the Vision, letting it clink to the floor, and she grabbed Kazuha’s arm instead, pulling him in until he was sobbing into her less-injured shoulder. He held onto her grip as tightly as he once clasped a dead Vision. Tighter, even, because she squeezed back.
“It’s okay, kid. We’re okay.”

Please share your thoughts about fanon's Beidou interpretation
It took me too long to get to this cause I couldn't decide if I wanted to make this a long answer or shorter but like... I feel like Beidou really got the short end of the stick in several cases in the fandom and in game, and how it possibly lead to how she's portrayed fanon-wise.
I'm tired of trying to figure out how to word this, so I apologize if it gets to me just rambling because it will. But also I'm a Beidou main and I want to talk about her, SO Y'ALL GONNA LISTEN.
Tumblr media
I've been playing since about 1.1(?) and in the earlier days of the Genshin fandom Beidou hardly had any fan content to begin with.
Which made sense at the time, because she wasn't really present in the "Farewell, Archaic Lord" story a.k.a the Liyue Geo Archon quest like at all... But what is interesting about Beidou is that her presence was still technically there in game even when she wasn't officially introduced in the main story.
Like for example we had access to The Alcor and The Crux Fleet for a very long time and we could talk to her crew on it and get almost everyone's opinion about her. Almost all them had extreme respect for her and even crushes on her? Furong being gay for Beidou is a huge mood tbh and I got to share the fact women are indeed in fact attracted to Beidou.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In canon, Beidou is highly respected by so many. Literally "something of a cultural icon in Liyue" according to her character story, almost all the playable characters have nothing but good things to say about her. Even kids in Liyue role play as her when they play pirates and fight over who gets to be Beidou.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All these little details that you could find about Beidou while exploring was incredibly interesting to me and made me REALLY want to see what kind of person Beidou would be like in the story... and that's kinda where my issue with fanon Beidou begins.
Part of the reason I think she really did get the short end of the stick in the story was because she wasn't introduced until around June-July this year(?) with Kazuha at the same time...
Beidou's introduction wasn't super exciting for me... don't get me wrong, I'm happy we got this at all and I adore Kazuha but I sometimes wish we got a different introduction to Beidou and how we convinced her to take us to Inazuma. Her introduction felt like it got a little overshadowed by Kazuha and the whole The Crux Clash subplot.
And the reason I wished she got some introduction before we met Kazuha, is because fanon Beidou gets reduced to just being his doting mom figure.... like A LOT and that's it sometimes.
and before someone comes at me, please know I think there's nothing wrong with that. I actually really enjoy some Mama Beidou content, but my issue is that a lot of the content is never really about Beidou, her other qualities, or her character story. It's so hard to find that stuff it feels like.
I get where the characterization of "Mama Beidou" comes from, because it's canon Beidou gives out snacks to kids in Liyue sometimes and kids do like her and she does things like ruffling Xingqiu's hair which can seem like something a mom would do. SO I DO GET IT.
Tumblr media
Another thing about Beidou's other relations, Beidou used to feel like she didn't exist outside of the ship Beigguang... AGAIN DON'T COME FOR ME, CAUSE I LOVE AND SHIP BEIGGUANG A LOT. IT'S A GREAT SHIP BUT again... like with Kazuha... Beidou just gets a bit mischaracterized there too sometimes.
By the way, I'm mostly speaking about how I've seen Beidou portrayed in fan art for clarification. I haven't gotten around to seeing how Beidou is usually characterized in fan fiction yet.
This isn't most of the time thankfully, but why does Beidou get characterized as the dumb or even irresponsible one in the Beigguang ship? That's a characterization that I've seen a few times and never understood.
Is it cause she seems like a rebel type? Because she enjoys drinking? Because she does Ningguang's "dirty work"? Because she has a lot of gossip surrounding her? Because Ningguang just seems to be more sophisticated to you? I don't know... But that's definitely my least favorite fanon Beidou.
It's a literal fact that Beidou is considered Ningguang's equal.
"...she collaborates with Ningguang on an equal footing: Beidou is her own boss and no one, not even Ningguang, is sitting in the background pulling the strings for her."
"Ningguang's advisers worry constantly that Beidou is too unpredictable and too much of a maverick. But Ningguang simply smiles and dismisses their concerns.
"On the contrary, Beidou is the most reliable person in Liyue," she replies. "Just tell her the truth, as well as what's in it for her, and she'll come around in her own time."
Also Beidou can even beat Ningguang at chess and very few can do that. Beidou is actually very intelligent and a good judge of character.
"Beidou has beaten Ningguang at chess. Twice. The important part is not so much that she did win Ningguang's money, but more that she dared to."
But now to prevent anymore tangents, basically I feel like a lot of fanon Beidou comes from her not being able to exist much outside of her popular relationships sometimes. She has many other connections with other characters but we don't that much. Maybe if we're lucky we will see more of that in the future.
All Genshin characters are mischaracterized sometimes for sure and some more than others. At the end of the day, fandom is all in good fun and I don't really worry that much about it despite me having a lot to say. So all this stuff is okay to exist.
It just sometimes saddens me Beidou doesn't get the actual cool or interesting parts of her talked about as much as some characters either.
Her backstory might be on the more generic side, but is also a more of a uplifting story than a sad one. Who Beidou is now is what is cool to me, and she has the one of the most badass vision stories in the entire game and you can't fight me on the that, I will debate.
If you haven't read Beidou's Vision story in her profile, I highly recommend you do. Just shows how powerful she is on her own and she definitely deserved her vision. I could talk about so many other things right now.
But anyways, it's late and this has been the passionate ramblings of a Beidou fan, if you made it through this congratulations lol

homecoming
Title: homecoming
Fandom: Genshin Impact
Characters: Beidou, Kazuha, Ningguang
Rating: G
Word Count: 3,286
Summary: After months of no contact, Beidou receives a message from Kazuha. Three lines, a simple haiku, one that she can't ignore.
"Please come and get me I’m tired of this country I want to come home."
(Set just after the Irodori Festival, Kazuha reunites with the crew of the Alcor.)
AO3
The slip of paper flitted, given wings on the wind. Dancing atop the ocean waves, it travelled across the sea, propelled onwards as if by thought alone. Miles and miles, it never faltered, not until it came to a port where ships rested their lofty sails, where a legendary captain leant against the railing of her beloved vessel. She held a bottle of rum in one hand, her other arm around the waist of her golden lover.
She didn't notice when the slip of paper shot past the crow’s nest. She was not privy to it fluttering around the deck. Instead, she put the neck of her bottle to her lips, shifting her hold on her lover. The moon was high and beautiful, and her thoughts turned to how she might loot it for herself, a gift for the woman who would no doubt ask for it if the fancy struck her. She thought of the crew she would put together; her most trusted, those would be able to pull off a heist so grand. Juza, her Chief Mate, Sea Drake and Furong to sail with, Huixing to navigate, Suling, to work their weapons and their tools.
Kazuha, too, if she could find him, to yank the moon out of the sky and haul back with. It seemed more of a pipe-dream than the actual moon-heist. He’d been missing for a while, had left to travel in the wake of that odd, musical instrument he’d found, and she hadn’t seen him since. She hadn’t stopped him, of course; she was not his prison-warden, only his captain. If the world was his to see, then who was she to hold him back?
It was her lover who heard the rustle of paper, who turned in time to see it come to rest on the deck. As it settled, she sighed. “Beidou, might you have an admirer I’m unaware of?”
Beidou smiled thinly. That was her Ningguang, a hint of playful jealousy hidden in her tone. “Too many to count, I’m sure. Why? Are we being watched?”
“Not quite.”  Ningguang removed herself from her hold, heels clicking as she crossed the deck. She bent to retrieve the slip, taking it between her thumb and forefinger. “Hm, how curious. I recognize this lettering; beautiful calligraphy. It seems that someone has sent you a letter.”
“Well, it can wait. Tonight is ours.” Beidou took another swig of her bottle. “If it was that urgent, they’d have sent the request properly instead of letting it drift aboard.”
Ningguang stood straight, the paper alluring and mysterious in her loose hold. “Are you certain? I do recall a gift given to me by that foreign sailor of yours with the red and white hair. A wonderful little book of poetry, all three lines long and filled with nature. There was a message in the front of it, handwritten, and it looked just like this.”
Beidou lurched forward, snatching the slip with her free hand. The slip of paper was battered and crinkled, but Ningguang had been correct. The lettering was pristine and familiar, like hearing the voice of a friend one hadn’t seen in a while. She cast her eyes over it once, twice, three times.
It was a short message, concise, but packed with emotion in the cadence of a haiku. It had no return address, no mention of who had sent it, but Beidou knew.
Please come and get me
I’m tired of this country
I want to come home
“Well?” Ningguang said, a knowing smile on her lips. “Will the Alcor be setting sail come morning?”
Beidou swallowed the rest of her rum, wiping the back of her hand against her mouth. “As soon as the sun rises. Can’t keep the kid waiting, after all.”
***
The trip was long, but hardly arduous. Inazuma was no longer the guarded nation of the past, walled off with thunder and lightning that even a seasoned sailor such as herself would struggle to pass through. Clear skies and brilliant sunshine saw them through, but the days dragged on as Beidou kept watch over her crew. Minutes felt like days. Hours felt like years.
There had been no way to send a return letter; Kazuha had not given her anything to work with. He would know that she’d received the letter, given how he could attune himself with the wind, but she wondered if it had whispered of her swift response to him. Did he know she was coming? Could he feel the Alcor’s sails shifting the axis of the wind? He could identify a change in the weather days before it occurred. He’d saved them from the ruinous rage of unexpected storms too many times to count.
The moon was waning by the time Inazuma was in sight. Huixing had asked days before, which island did they want to make for? Narukami, Kannazuka, or Yashiori? Watatsumi, or Seirai? Beidou knew little about Kazuha’s past aside from the circumstances that had led him to run the first time, but she doubted he would be far from the areas he had once called home. In the end, Ritou on Narukami seemed like the obvious answer. After all, it had been near there that she’d encountered him for the first time,
She still remembered him, of course, guarded and cold in a way that seemed uncharacteristic and wrong now. He'd had his freshly bandaged hand on the hilt of his sword, a grim smile on his face as the treasure hoarders looking to claim his bounty closed in on them from all sides. “You’re really going to trust me, despite my being from Inazuma. My mind is like a wind on the waves—it can change in an instant.”
And her own response, as she looked to break past his walls, to show him he could trust her. “Heh, kid, I think I’ve got you figured out.”
She’d been right, of course. Reading people was an art she’d long become proficient in. Ningguang had given her ample practice on her own, but piracy had given her every opportunity to refine it further. Kazuha had been trustworthy to his core. A fugitive, yes, but not one by choice. Life had backed him against the wall, and he’d chosen to fight for the cause he’d believed in, even if it meant losing his home.
She was right again, as the Alcor closed in on Ritou. He was not difficult to find, because in the end, he was waiting right where he trusted they would come first. Sat on one of the many wooden piers, one knee up, swathed in the warm colours of the maple leaf. Above his head, a flag depicting a colourful version of the Raiden Shogun flew, the remnants of the Irodori Festival that Liyue had sent one of its own authors to. Beidou had heard about it from Xiangling, who’d told her very enthusiastically that she was friends with the man, and that his book was awesome.
In her time on the sea, Beidou had seen many different reunions at many different ports. She’d seen lovers sweep into each other’s arms, family crying tears of joy, friends throwing themselves into embrace, employers patting their employee’s backs. She’d seen demure waves and smiling faces, apathetic acknowledgement and cool approval. She had a feeling that Kazuha’s reunion with the crew would be a lively affair, but was unsure what her own response would be. They had been apart for months, after all. Not much had changed, but that time still felt like a gulf between them.
Kazuha was patient as he always was, not so much as moving even as Juza got the ship anchored. Drake and Furong got the ramp set up, and Beidou nodded her thanks as she left them to watch over it, to welcome back their wayward sailor for herself first.
Inazuma’s air always felt different. Electro-charged, one could say. Beidou wondered how it felt to someone who wasn’t aligned to the element the way she was. She stepped off her ship, feeling the wind tug at her hair as she did so. Playful, delighted. Almost like it was excited to see her.
Kazuha didn’t look her way as she approached. He had his eyes shut, his bandaged hand resting on his knee. When she stopped at his side, he spoke, low and calm. “You came.”
“Did you think I wouldn’t?” Beidou watched as the moonlight softened his face, making him look younger than he really was. “I got the message. Well. Ningguang did. Discerning eye and all.”
“I know.” Kazuha smiled, eyes opening, revealing their crimson hue. “I knew you were due tonight, so I came here to wait. I’d ask if you want to experience the remnants of the festival, but it appears you’ve arrived too late. They’ve already cleared most of it away.”
She recalled his message, his quiet plea to leave delicate across the rumpled paper. He didn’t want to be here; even if the festival had still been in place, she wouldn’t have gone around it. “Shame. I’d be disappointed, but I didn’t come for the festival. I came for you.”
He chuckled, lilting and sweet. “I’m humbled. It’s been a while, Captain. I wasn’t sure if I’d be allowed aboard.”
“There’s always a place for you there, kid.” Beidou held out her hand to him. “Thought I’d told you that.”
“I disappeared without so much as a word,” he said, glancing over. “When I found the zither, I mean. I took it and left.”
“And trust me, I was glad for the break. You were playing that thing to death, I was just grateful to have some peace and quiet.”
“Is that so?” Kazuha hummed. He took her hand with his own, squeezing it gently as she hauled him up. “Well, thank you, regardless. I was worried that I might have to find my own way back, and as it so happens, I’m a little light on Mora. Hitching a ride was a little…out of the question, so to speak.”
He looked a little abashed at admitting that fact. Beidou shook her head fondly. “Good thing you have a Mora-free method of sending letters, then. What are you even doing here, anyhow? Last I checked, you made tracks in Liyue. Mondstadt would’ve made more sense.”
Kazuha glanced once behind him, a last, careful look at the country he should have called his home, and then turned back. “I’ll tell you the story once we’re aboard. For now, let’s go. I’ve got gifts for you all. A special drink, limited to just this festival. Do we know if any of the crew are allergic to soybeans?”
She barked a laugh. “Soybeans, really? What kind of allergy is that?”
A hint of amusement lifted the edges of Kazuha’s lips. He brushed past her, waving his hand dismissively. The wind chased after him, toying with the tips of his hair, silver in the light of the moon. “A very real one. Perhaps I’ll tell you that story too, should the crew wish to hear it.
***
All night, he entertained them with the story of the festival. Sat atop a crate, Kazuha spoke at length, all the sailors armed with their new drinks. He told them of the Raiden Gokaden, of the Five Kasen, of the new friends he’d made at the festival, how he’d been used as a model for one of the poets of legend. Little Yue clapped his hands in delight. “That’s perfect for you, Kazuha! ‘Cause you’re a poet too!”
Kazuha nodded, and then moved on to a different tale, this one of an oni who was apparently allergic to the very drinks they now had in hand. After that, he told them of the girl from Mondstadt who could make bombs from near nothing, of her big brother, who could draw anything. However, as he spoke, Beidou couldn’t help but feel like something was missing from his stories. Nothing seemed quite so terrible that it would make him run from Inazuma again. On the contrary; everything painted an experience so positive, it would be difficult to leave it all behind.
Later, as the moon was fading from sight, as the first hint of blue began to creep back into the sky, Beidou found herself alone with him on the deck. Shadows sat beneath his eyes, speaking of his exhaustion, but he didn’t retire to his cabin like the others had. Instead, he sat on the railing, seemingly intent on watching as Inazuma slowly vanished on the horizon, red eyes gazing with intensity.
Beidou gripped the railing herself, fingers wrapped around the cool metal. It was quiet, only the sound of the rushing waves accompanying them. She rolled a couple of sentence-starters around her mouth before speaking. “You know you’re welcome there now, right?”
“I know,” Kazuha said.
Quiet descended over them again. Beidou sighed, leaning forward on the railing with her elbows. “But you don’t want to be there. What else happened at your festival, kid? What made you want to leave again after you made the choice to go back?”
Kazuha’s eyes narrowed a fraction. Usually, they were soft, gentle, if Beidou had to assign a descriptor. Now, they seemed hardened, sharp at their edges. “There wasn’t a single, deciding factor. I just…changed my mind. Like the wind changes direction, so too did I.”
“Tell me the truth, Kazuha,” Beidou said. “A lie by omission is still a lie regardless.”
“So would hate me if I refused to answer?”
Beidou scoffed. “No. If you want to keep it to your chest, that’s your decision, but I think you’d feel better if you told someone.”
“You’re probably right,” Kazuha relented, glancing down into the ocean. “But the truth is just that; there wasn’t one single reason. A multitude, really. All fibres of a single, woven thread. I found some truths out about my family during the festival, not terrible ones, but I’d already made up my mind long before that anyway. Inazuma is no longer my home, but I do wonder if it was ever welcoming to those of my blood to begin with.”
“Your clan, you mean?” Beidou wasn’t all that privy to the details, but she knew the gist. “You mentioned it fell.”
“I think now I know why.” Kazuha closed his eyes as the ocean lapped against the boat, as fine spray caught them both in the face. “But, in truth, that wasn’t it. It was walking Inazuma’s streets, passing through places I once knew. All of it brought to mind terrible memories. Those were the places that I was chased through, the places I thought I might die in, where I had to search out spaces to hide. More than that, they were the places we once frequented."
He didn’t have to elaborate. She knew that part of his story well, who we referred to. Beidou sometimes considered herself his shadow, when she was fighting back-to-back with Kazuha and he swirled her Electro power with perfect precision. He knew how to apply the element with his own Anemo like he’d been born with the ability to wield both, a skill born through repeated practice.
“That was why I left, you know,” Kazuha said. “With the zither, I mean.”
“The instrument was the reason for this?” Beidou frowned. “Are you serious? That piece of adeptal junk? Nah, you looked happier than I’d ever seen you when you were playing with that thing.”
Kazuha laughed lightly. “I told you, it had a power. It made you feel like you were playing with another person, like they were right by your side instead of a thousand miles away. For me, when I played that instrument, it was like he was back at my side. You were right about me playing it to death. I chased that feeling like it was a drug. My fingers wouldn’t leave it alone. I played until they bled, but it was unhealthy, for me and the zither too.”
A horrible, cold feeling hollowed out Beidou’s chest. If that was true, how hadn’t she known? Curse the adepti for creating something so cruel. The blame laid with her, too; she should have seen it. Should have done something. “Kid, look, you didn’t have to go. You didn’t have to feel that alone.”
“No, I did.” Kazuha craned his head to face her. “The zither taught me a lesson.”
“And that was?”
“That things break if you don’t let off the pressure.” His expression was open and vulnerable, his smile sad. “Once I fixed it, I gave it to the traveller so I would no longer be able to pick at my own open wounds. But, I still had to come to terms with my situation, so I made the decision to come home. I thought that with the Shogun’s pardon, it might feel better, but I was wrong. Inazuma is no longer mine, and I am no longer hers. A ronin in every sense of the word.”
He twisted around to hop off the railing. Beidou reached for him, an arm wrapping around his shoulders. It wasn’t quite a hug—she wasn’t sure if that was quite what he needed—but it was something close. “Suits you just fine though, right? You’re a traveller, so you don’t need a home on a piece of rock. You need one that can move. One that catches the wind. One that can take you wherever you need to go.”
Kazuha snickered softly. “I said as much in my letter to you, didn’t I? The Alcor is my home. I couldn’t imagine anywhere else. If you have need of a wandering samurai, then I’m quite happy to offer my services.”
“I can imagine a couple of scenarios where you’d be required,” Beidou said. “And, even if not, I always need my trusty weathervane. You're always welcome here, no matter what, I swear it, zither or no zither, sword or no sword, with a Vision, or without."
A beat of silence. Kazuha, pulling back from her. "You're too good to me."
"I'm as good as I should be. Now, as nice as this has been to catch up, you look dead on your feet and I don’t trust you to not fall overboard. Get your ass into the cabins and rest up—you’ve got some explaining to do to the Tianquan when we get back, seeing as your letter ruined her date.”
Kazuha’s eyebrows shot up his head. “How would I have ruined her date?”
“The wind didn’t update you on that?” Beidou slapped a hand on his back, shoving him off in the other direction. Not much had changed since she’d last seen him, but he had missed the entirety of Liyue’s Lantern Rite, after all. “Use your head, and then get some sleep. I mean it.”
There was a delightful look of surprise on his face, one that she didn’t often get to see. It was much better than the morose expression he’d worn prior. “Ah,” he said after a moment, his eyes brightening. “I see. Well, I’m glad to hear it, Captain. Perhaps I’ll write some poems for the Tianquan. Would that be enough of an apology?”
“Depends on how good they are,” Beidou answered with a grin. “But get some sleep first, you hear?”
“Aye-aye, Captain!” Kazuha saluted as if to solidify that. He turned to leave, only to glance over his shoulder once more. “It’s good to be back, Beidou. Thank you for letting me come home.”
And, oh, if she could capture the warmth those words brought and bottle them, she would. “Not a problem. Sleep well, kid.”
