Elain snuggled into the leather cushions, Nyx’s small, warm body cuddled on top of her — his baby-fat cheek pressed into her sternum and his wet lips puckered as he slept. She brushed her fingers delicately through his black hair, sweeping it off of his forehead.

Her back pressed into the plush arm of the loveseat with her legs bent and rested over Azriel’s lap. Azriel’s warm hand resting on her feet, gently pulsating his hand in a massage.

Ever since she sat down next to him she knew that Azriel was aware of her. Without even looking at her he took a slice of veggie pizza and placed it on paper plate and passed it to her while maintaining conversation with Cassian, who was hollering from the kitchen, and Azriel kept bouncing Nyx on his lap.

Feyre put on her favorite movie, When Harry Met Sally, and even though all of them had watched it multiple times (it was always on the shortlist for nights when Feyre picked the movie) and none of them said a word because it was Feyre and they all enjoyed it. Could quote it off the top of their heads. Cassian always got a little too into the scene where they sing The Surrey With The Fringe on Top.

Elain did her best to pay attention to the movie — she really, truly did. But X-rated images of Azriel with faceless women kept turning in her mind, and every once in a while Cassian or Rhysand or both would join in the scenarios. She wanted to hide her face in cushions on the couch and disappear — she did not want to think about Cassian and Rhysand like that. They were basically her brothers. So she shoved those intrusive thoughts into the furnace to disintegrate them into something of ash-like thoughts.

She distracted herself with her sleeping nephew, Azriel’s hand a warm weight on her foot.

Eventually, Azriel’s eyes caught hers as she shifted in her seat.

“Can we talk after?” Elain asked, echoing the words in her text. “After the movie? Please?”

Something darkened in Azriel’s eyes, but he nodded his head and gave her foot a comforting squeeze. Their gaze charged as he held her eyes before slowly turning back to screen. His thumb sweeping over the top of her foot.

Elain hunkered down further into the couch, cradling Nyx against her chest, and forcing her attention onto the television even though her body and mind were screaming at her to focus on Azriel.

After the movie, Elain handed her sleeping nephew to Feyre and she and Rhysand quickly slipped away to put their child to bed.

Before anyone could say anything to her, Elain escaped to her room and waited for Azriel to join her, knowing he would wait until he wouldn’t draw any suspicion. Not that anyone besides Mor would suspect them of anything, but Elain knew Azriel wouldn’t risk it.

She paced back and forth, gnawing on her thumbnail in worry — a habit that her mother tried so desperately to break, and she succeeded for the most part. It only surfaced when Elain felt especially anxious.

Her bare feet walked an imaginary tightrope as she waited for Azriel, and as soon as the door creaked open Elain turned on her heels. Her hands dropped like heavy weights at her side.

“Hi.” Elain said softly as Azriel shut the door behind him. He didn’t turn the lock, but he did cross his arms and lean his back up against the door. His brown arms tight with tension.

“You wanted to talk?” Azriel asked in a low, calm voice, but his furrowed brow betrayed him ever so slightly.

Her tongue came out to wet her dry lips as Elain nodded her head.

“Yeah,” She swallowed. “I, um, I talked with Mor today.”

Azriel stood upright, no longer leaning against the door.

“And what did she say?”

“She may have mentioned that you, Cassian, and Rhysand used to…share?” Her voice grew disturbingly squeaky as she spoke, crescendoing with a cringe turning at her face.

“Share?” Azriel asked, blinking in confusion. Or disbelief.

“Women?”

The muscle in Azriel’s jaw was threatening to burst through his cheek as he bit down.

“And,” Elain swallowed again, wondering how it was possible for her mouth to be so dry. “I, um, was wondering if maybe that was something you expected of me?” Azriel paled. His dark skin drained of all color. “It’s not something that I’ve ever done before, so I just wanted you to know. Which you probably already knew because I told you about my history with Graysen, so I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. And I told you how hard it is for me to connect with someone, so I don’t know if I could do this,” She motioned between them. “With anyone but you. I, um, I thought you should know.”

Azriel’s eyes darkened, and an expression Elain had never seen before overtook her face.

“I’m going to murder her,” Azriel growled, running a scarred hand over his face and tugging at his black hair. He turned and reached for the doorknob, but abruptly spun back to her and strode across the wooden floor and set his hands on Elain’s shoulders. “I would never fucking expect you to do anything. Elain,” Her squeezed her shoulders and took a deep breath, calming himself. “Fuck,” Azriel said harshly under his breath, his eyes screwing shut. He took another deep breath before opening his bright hazel eyes. “Just so you know, the thought of another man putting his hands on you makes me want to punch the fucking wall.”

“Oh.” Elain said softly, blushing.

“Fuck,” Azriel shook his head. “Mor never should have fucking said anything, but Elain, those girls meant nothing to me. And I meant even less to them, ok? I was a story they told afterwards. That’s it. We all were, really. A way for them to feel excited in their lives. They would come home with Cassian or Rhys, and none of us cared enough to say no. We didn’t care, Elain. Do you see what I’m saying?”

His eyes were desperately seeking hers.

“You didn’t enjoy it?” Elain asked with a raised brow.

His shoulders dropped a little.

“I did at first, but it started to make me feel like shit. Not caring about what I did and who I did it with made me feel like shit. And it only happened a few times, it wasn’t like we were doing it every fucking weekend, but we were all just using each other.” Azriel said, bringing on hand to gently hold her chin between his fingers. “I hate that you even have to think about this.”

“So you don’t miss it all? I’ll be…enough?” Elain asked gently, her breath heavy in his chest.

Azriel leaned forward and rested his forehead against hers. His warm breath skimming over her nose and cheeks.

“More than fucking enough, Elain,” His eyes drifted shut for a moment and became unbearable soft and his eyes lids trudged upwards. “Let me prove it to you?”

His thumb tracing the length of her chin.

“How so?” Elain asked, peering up at him.

“Well,” Azriel cleared his throat. “I’m going to ask for two things: your time and your trust. I want to show you that you’re all I need. I want this to work between us, Elain.”

There was a quiet passion in his voice that caused Elain’s insides to simmer with need.

She couldn’t remember the last time anyone genuinely tried to do something for her and not expect anything in return.

Elain nodded her head and slowly wrapped her arms around his neck, his strong arms wrapping around her torso as she burrowed into his chest.

“Tomorrow we have brunch at my parents house, but maybe afterwards we can do something?” She asked tentatively, basking in the warmth of his strong body.

“After we survive brunch?” Azriel mumbled into her hair and Elain nodded.

It would be her first time seeing her parents since she moved out, and since the picture Elain posted of herself and Azriel went viral.

“You may not want to date me after tomorrow.” Elain grumbled.

“I doubt it.” Azriel said, and could feel his lips rising in a smile.

Mayford, Massachussetts is a city in Suffolk, County, just forty-five-minutes southeast of Quincy. It is situated inside of a deep, depressed marshland, and flanked by steep embankments as well as dark primeval forests.
