Lads, should I try going to a club again this saturday even after my unsuccessful event last time (where I went home in tears after having to dodge a car that nearly hit me, resulting in me diving into a puddle), in the hopes that I can meet someone? I've had zero luck with dating apps and it's really really starting to hurt. The alternative is finding a better way to kill myself.

The Azuma Yeonchi Experience

Gonna put some of my fans on the spot here in case they have the fortitude to work out what I’m talking about even though I’m keeping them anonymous.

A decade ago, way before I got involved in the Sea Princesses renaissance in Latin America (I’ll come back to that later), I was experimenting all over social media. One of those experiments involved helping some of my friends create Facebook accounts, and it was through one of them that I encountered some really interesting people.

There was this Mexican man who was deaf and mute. He made videos every so often, but I would never understand him because he communicated in sign language, as if learning the Spanish language itself wasn’t daunting enough. I remember one of the first things he sent my friend was this list which was like, “Do you like Angelina Ballerina”, “Do you like Sea Princesses”, “Do you like My Little Pony” and so forth. He had this obsession of having those shows (and others) in a crossover universe with Sega. Now, I’m not one to criticise that guy’s efforts, but his idea of that crossover universe is to just stick the Sega logo on images and call it a day. Looking back, this was the first time I’d encountered someone who was as much a fan of Sea Princesses than I was.

This next guy from Argentina had a waifu, and his waifu just happened to be a friend of my friend. He was so obsessed with his waifu to the point that he kept messaging my friend asking for his waifu. Naturally, her friend and I were willing to play up this charade for him; we didn’t really try to let him down per se, but we established this sort of boundary where we wouldn’t reciprocate his love for his waifu, though we could give him advice and talk whenever we felt like it. Some time passed and we went our separate ways, which was just as well because I was getting too busy to keep up the charade for my friend.

Heading over to Europe and we come to Estonia, where I introduce someone who likes horses and cosplaying as Angelina Ballerina. He posts a lot of random videos regularly, though one of the prominent things in his videos is that he sings karaoke and dances on the spot. His videos are admittedly cringy, but at least he has friends with the people at his group home or social club for autistic (or should I say neurodiverse?) people or whatever and he is clearly doing what he loves to do.

Some honourable mentions also go to some people who liked roleplaying as furries (before obnoxious furfags became relatively mainstream) and this French kid (from one of the overseas islands) who I swear looked five in his profile pic, which he hadn’t updated since 2014. I wonder how he’s doing now.

Why am I highlighting these non-English speaking fans who came into contact with me for things other than my English dub rants, anime posting or the generalised content I post every so often? Because I want to express my appreciation for my fanbase as I try to connect to the forgotten corners of it to the best of my ability while trying not to destroy the legacy I’ve worked so hard to build up (by merging Facebook pages, not that I could anyway particularly because the page names aren’t similar). I’ve dipped into so many interests over the past few years and while I have decided to settle into a few while also finding new ones to replace the discarded ones, I’ve wanted to connect to the fans I left behind from the interests I discarded. While some fans have remained with me all these years without interacting with my posts (some because they’ve abandoned their old accounts and moved onto new ones), I have to accept that there are some fans I cannot reconnect with and move forward.

A few months ago, I asked my friends to invite some of their friends to like my Facebook page. Admittedly, there were some who did, including the three people I told you about earlier, and there were some who didn’t. That seemingly started a bit of an influx in likes on my page; I had been stagnating on 730-ish likes for a couple of years, but now, I am at around 800 followers (my page got changed to the new Pages experience, for better or for worse, and likes are being phased out in favour of followers). Admittedly, this figure could have been better given that my brand has been around for 10 years, but some things just can’t be helped, I suppose.

This year, my contributions to the Sea Princesses renaissance have allowed me to reach out to a contingent of the renaissance in Latin America. Aside from occasional mentions on YouTube comment sections, I am in MJZD Gaming’s Sea Princesses Discord server and I also have correspondence with Liamasterink discussing obscure aspects of the series and sharing insights of our fanfictions (admittedly, I think he’s shared more than I have, though it’s not like he can’t find the Kisekae Insights instalments or I can’t find his fanarts anyway).

When I first discovered MJZD Gaming’s Discord server, I must say that I found it daunting to stay because people had to translate for me because I couldn’t be fucked Google Translating my messages (even harder when you’re out and about and on a phone), which is ironic seeing as I used to make the effort to do that with my friends years ago when they were talking to their friends. I only stayed in there for about a couple of hours before I left. For a few months after that, I was agonising over whether I should come back because I didn’t want translations clogging up the general channel, but then eventually I decided that if the people in the server wanted me to come back, then I would come back on the condition that I have an “English Corner” channel. Then I discovered that someone sent me a friend request on Discord and I decided to come back to see if it was one of the people from the channel and sure enough, it was.

So yeah, while my return wasn’t exactly what I’d preferred it to be, I have my own “English Corner” channel in there and Liam talks with me on Discord now in a DM thread because the entire server is dead most of the time. Apparently they have a WhatsApp group as well which is more active than the Discord server, but I’m not comfortable giving my phone number to internet people.

We’ve had our ups and downs over the past 10 years, but my appreciation goes to the fans who have interacted with me on my pages. You’ve all given me the inspiration to keep going as my content evolved over the years. I hope you’ll continue to follow me as I continue to create content you’ll hopefully appreciate.

i’ll probably do bob and angel face too sometime. (angel face will be a panda and bob will be a moose)

my autistic yapping on the reasons for choosing each species under the cut:

for tyler i was considering any strepsirrhine primate as they’re my favorite primates. i chose a ring-tailed lemur because it’s the most iconic. i knew i definitely wanted his fursona to be a primate because “space monkeys”

narrator’s fursona was a given. i specifically chose an emperor penguin for him because that was the exact species depicted in the movie

i debated on either a virginia opossum, striped skunk, or raccoon for marla, due to them all being scavengers and their scrappy nature, plus the fact that they’re seen as sneaky and sometimes seen as pest animals. also all 3 of those animals are native to delaware, where fight club takes place. i settled on a virginia opossum because comparatively they (and marsupials in general) are less represented as fursonas. earlier before i eventually thought of a possum, skunk, or raccoon, i was also considering a cat or shark. (sharks are also native to delaware on the atlantic coast. and obviously cats are found there too, lmao.)
