Spiderverse was crazy, so basically Meals Martinez and Genuine Stinky reunite and get in trouble trying to protect Malls from Magnet O'Hard On and Japanese Drool, all while trying to stop Spotify from destroying the multiverse. There were some new characters like Hobart Beige and Pa Heater Probation and we got to see 🅱️eter 🅱️arker again, and there was this twist ending where alternate Milo turns out to be his universe's version of The Pisser. anyway 10/10 movie would watch again

Sorry but Kor Phaeron being angry as fuck and basically shouting "WHO TAUGHT LORGAR HOW TO SAY 'FUCK'??" is a hilarious mental image. Especially since Kor Phaeron is about 17 himself.

Which. By the way. Kor Phaeron is only 17 when he picks up Lorgar. I do not see people really talking about this very often, but Kor Phaeron is a literal child who has an entire entourage of slaves and converts and guards with him.

And then he picks up a genuine toddler who has weird psychic powers and decides "yes, this is my acolyte now".

Kor Phaeron, in a way, had what Erebus had said he had wanted when he was a boy. The fuck.

Mikoto and Noein?

So if you've looked in the CRYMACHINA artbook at all, you've probably noticed this interesting tidbit on Noein's page.

Her face resembles Mikoto's? And the fact that it's secret lore means that this was intentional. This wasn't just some "oh, we're gonna reuse a face on this character whose face will never be fully shown" situation, so what's the deal here?

Warning! Major spoilers for the end of the game below the Read More. Click at your own risk (preferably don't click if you haven't at least finished chapter 7).

Importantly, I think it's less that Mikoto and Noein resemble each other and more that they both resemble Eve. Sort of. Humans are very much nothing like they are in our world (unless we're also in a simulation that lost what humanity truly looks like), so there are some liberties to take here. We'll start with the Noein connection as that's the one that takes a bit more explaining and Hurts Me more.

Noein is very much a Missing Link of sorts between Humanity and the E.V.E., largely looking like a cross between the two. In fact, she rather heavily resembles the statues in Eden specifically.

Notably, there's also concept art of Noein with four arms, which I truly desperately wish had made the final cut.

As for the connections to Eve, Noein carries herself in much the same way, and I'd even argue that her thorny crown is somewhat reminiscent of Eve's thorny head.

On its own, this sounds tenuous at best, especially since Eve notably has NO eyes due to being a designer baby, but we know from Noein's Personality Data Memoir, one of the Cardinals' Personality Data Memoirs, and the document obtained from completing the Cardinals sidequest that Xu Dong, Noein's creator, was in love with Eve. Considering that Eve's presence on the project was being completely scrubbed, Xu Dong likely would've wanted to immortalize Eve's involvement in some other way, likely by drawing on Eve as her inspiration for building Noein, and thus, Noein could be argued to resemble an abstraction of what Eve would've looked like as a normal Human, a connection that I definitely feel would've been stronger with the four-armed Noein design.

And with that explained, now I can touch on why Mikoto has the same face. As we know, the E.V.E. Project was an attempt to recreate Eve for Lilly's sake, and Mikoto seems to have been the closest to that goal by far. She showed little to no rejection responses when given ExP (her reactions largely being limited to flashbacks whenever it altered her memories), and Evetization even seemed to be progressing at a decent pace, considering that Leben comments on how Mikoto has been acting differently lately in a Tea Party towards the end of chapter 3. On top of that, Lilly even recognized her as her sister ON SIGHT and took her head on the spot, confident that she was the one without even needing to check her personality data. Considering Lilly's genuine confusion as to why Mikoto wasn't fully awakening as Eve at the end of chapter 5, it can be assumed that she still wasn't getting major rejection responses, and the only reason it was failing was due to Eden's failsafes preventing a second Eve from existing. Thus, add on the fact that Mikoto shares a face with Noein and what we've previously established about the both of them, and we can surmise that Mikoto looks INCREDIBLY similar to what Eve would've looked like as an E.V.E., to the point where they could potentially look like twins when side-by-side.

Further backing this up, though, is Mikoto's eyes. As we know, Eve doesn't actually have any eyes, almost certainly due to her being a designer baby. It's unknown whether she can see without them or if she relies more on her remaining senses, but she can at least perceive the E.V.E. well enough to know that they're a poor approximation of Humans.

Mikoto, meanwhile, has two notable details about her eyes. The most obvious detail is that she wears glasses in her virtual form, and considering Eve's (lack of) eyes, Mikoto's glasses are probably just as functional as they are fashionable.

The less obvious detail is that, while it's perfectly obscured in her virtual form, her right eye is incredibly fucked up, and you can see as much if you look closely enough at her synthetic frame. The sclera is blood red, and the iris is pitch black.

Interestingly, there's concept art in the artbook showing her with her hair up, and there, the colors of the sclera and iris are swapped. The old colors can also be seen on her character model (if you use her launcher, then activate photo mode while she's ascending) and very briefly during the NotToNotice(); MV, but the MakeFlowerCrown(); MV uses the new colors, meaning that the change likely happened late in development. This particular shot also feels like it calls attention to it, with it being centered on the camera and only flashing on screen for a brief moment. If I had to guess, there may have originally been plans to call attention to her eye at some point, but those were scrapped for one reason or another, and the colors were swapped to make it easier for eagle-eyed players to notice. Again, though, this is just speculation.

Considering everything else about the connection between Mikoto and Eve, this is almost certainly an analog to Eve's missing eyes, especially when we consider how the NotToNotice(); MV focuses on it for just a brief moment. Interestingly, the fact that Mikoto specifically hides the eye with her hair (even around family) implies a lack of self-confidence in regards to it. It's possible she was mistreated because of it while growing up, which would line up with her being rather similar to Eve. I do wish we had gotten at least a Tea Party touching on her eye, but considering that it would likely have required a whole new set of portraits for her with her eye exposed just for the very little time it's used, I get why it ended up being just a background detail.

Tl;dr, Noein was likely an abstraction of what a Human looked like, likely modeled after Eve as an act of love from Xu Dong, and Mikoto almost certainly looks incredibly similar to how Eve would've looked as an E.V.E. Thus, Mikoto and Noein share the same face. This lore truly is secret, given all the pieces you have to connect to uncover the why of it all. 😆

Katsuki has spent the better part of the year telling me stories about his friends—their wild adventures, their inside jokes—but this is my first time meeting them. Mina sits to my left, her pink hair bouncing as she excitedly tells a story about a prank gone wrong. On my right, Sero chimes in, interjecting at the funny moments with his own commentary. Their conversation swirls around me, lively and animated, but I struggle to keep up, feeling like an outsider in their effortless banter.

Katsuki sits across the room, squeezed between Kirishima and Todoroki. Kirishima’s laughter rings out, loud and carefree, while Todoroki’s quieter, more reserved comments punctuate the noise. It’s warm, so different from what I’m used to, and I can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed by the easy camaraderie. I glance over at Katsuki, and for a brief second, our eyes meet. His usual sharp expression softens just for me, a quiet look that makes my heart flutter. He tilts his head toward the door, a silent invitation I understand instantly.

I smile and rise from the couch, excusing myself from Mina and Sero with a promise that I’ll be right back. They nod, hardly noticing my absence as their conversation continues without skipping a beat. I make my way to the door, feeling Katsuki’s gaze lingering on me.

The cool night air greets me as the door clicks shut, muffling the sounds of laughter and chatter behind me. I walk to the wooden railing and lean against it, letting my fingers brush over the smooth surface as I stare out into the darkening sky. Birds scatter above, flying away as if they sense something I can’t see.

The door creaks open behind me, and I hear Katsuki’s familiar, heavy footsteps approaching. I don’t turn around, but I feel his presence beside me, the faint scent of smoke and sugar drifting in the breeze.

“Are those idiots bothering you?” Katsuki asks, his voice low and rough, laced with that protective irritation that’s so typical of him.

I turn around, leaning my back against the post as I meet his eyes. “Your friends are nice,” I reply.

“I didn’t ask if they were nice.” He scoffs, eyes flicking away as he crosses his arms. “If they’re bothering you, I’ll handle it.”

I step closer, reaching out to grab his forearm, ducking into his line of sight. “They’re not bothering me, Katsuki. I promise.”

He frowns, studying me with concern. “Then why don’t you look happy?”

“It’s personal.”

Katsuki frowns. “Who’s messing with you?”

“Katsuki!” I exclaim. “No one’s messing with me. I’m just… scared.”

His brows knit together. “Scared? Of what?”

“I don't want to tell you.”

He looks away, exasperated. “I can't fix it unless you tell me what's wrong.”

I swallow, the words heavy in my throat. “I keep having this nightmare… you... um.. I keep watching you die.”

His posture stiffens, but his expression softens. “I’m not gonna die.”

“You don’t know that!” I shout, my voice breaking under the weight of my fears. “It’s always the same vision—pouring rain, and you’re falling from the sky. I watch you hit the ground every single time I close my eyes.”

Katsuki breathes deeply, trying to steady himself, before he reaches out, cupping my cheek with a touch that’s uncharacteristically gentle. “Listen to me. I’m the best hero at this damn school. I’m gonna win this war, kick that nerd Deku’s ass, and take you out for dinner—all in one night. Got it?”

I manage a small, shaky smile, but it doesn’t quite reach my eyes. “Do you pinky promise?”

He rolls his eyes, but there’s a hint of a smile fighting to break through. He links his pinky with mine, squeezing tight. “Yeah, I pinky promise.”

captive prince book 1 highlights & annotations

chapter 6

indented text is from the book. some quotes have commentary, some do not. some comments are serious, and some are definitely not. most of them will only make sense to people who have read the series. and, like, there are spoilers. so please read the books first if you're interested!

also: part of the reason i'm doing such a close reading is to study cs pacat's style, especially in terms of how she does romance and erotica. there are "craft notes" that might seem weird, like i'm being redundant or restating something rather than analyzing, but those are more things that i want to remember/take away from the writing!

i'm going to tag these longer posts with "sam reads capri" in case anyone wants to read them all at once.

this is a google doc i wrote with overall content warnings for the captive prince series. it's not perfect, but i do think it's important to include.

‘In case he found me pleasing, I was being trained for the Prince.’ ‘Were you?’ said Damen, with some interest. ‘Because of my colouring. You can’t see it in this light, but in daylight, my hair is almost blond.’ ‘I can see it in this light,’ said Damen. He could hear the approval saturating his own voice. He felt it shift the dynamic between them. He might as well have said, Good boy.

context: slavery, in all forms, is wrong. the narrative knows this. damen does not.

It wasn’t possible that something like this was going to happen—that this court was so depraved that a mercenary could rape a royal slave a scant distance from the gathered court.

some really interesting questions about consent here. can sex under slavery be consensual? i say no. if a person does not have free will, they cannot freely give consent. 

but there is the sex scene between laurent and damen in book 2. that’s on damen’s last night of technically belonging to laurent—however, they both acknowledge that he really was never a slave, by training or behavior, and damen was given many opportunities to leave prior. so to me, it is very much consensual.

anyway, when damen suggests that the sex akielions have with palace slaves is consensual, it’s like… eh, no, i don’t think so. it’s still noncon, just with extra hidden steps and attempted justifications, as opposed to the blunt and unapologetic debauchery of vere (although i will note that in vere, the pets are not slaves, which damen seems to often ignore/forget). the slaves have been essentially trained their whole lives to always consent. that within itself is a violation of their human rights, and means that their verbal consent doesn’t even matter. basically: damen’s moral outrage here is justified, but it also exposes a massive blind spot in his perspective.

Without access to income from his various estates, Laurent’s retinue was substantially diminished and his spending curtailed.

this is so funny to me. laurent has to cancel several streaming service subscriptions because he’s losing income. no more hulu for you, broke boy

There had to be something he could do. There was nothing he could do.

Very deliberately, he knelt, and bowed his head, and lowered his eyes to the floor. For a moment, it was so quiet that he could hear the flames from the torches fluttering in the air. ‘This is new,’ said Laurent.

‘Let me guess. You want me to take off your chains. Or reduce your guard. Or put you in a room where the doors and windows are unbarred. Don’t waste your breath.’

context: laurent still cannot conceive of damen being a noble or selfless person

‘Am I supposed to believe you care about their welfare? How exactly would they be treated better in Akielos? It is your barbaric society that forced them into slavery, not mine. I would not have thought it possible to train the will out of a man, but you have managed it. Congratulations. Your show of compassion rings false.’

he’s right! and it’s definitely notable that this comes from laurent, whose strong will is one of his defining characteristics. he feels more disdain for the complete depersonalization of akielion slaves, than for the contractual torment of pets in vere.

laurent and submission do not mix well, ideologically or in practice. when he chooses to be submissive, it’s in order to feel more in control. it’s like what amma says in sharp objects by gillian flynn: “sometimes if you let people do things to you, you’re really doing it to them.” akielion slaves have been conditioned not to question what they’re told to do, and that to laurent is probably more evil than forcing someone who knows that they don’t want something to do it anyway.

‘I don’t know if that is usual practice in this place, but good men don’t torture slaves in Akielos. Slaves are trained to obey in all things, but their submission is a pact: they give up free will in exchange for perfect treatment.’

i know his heart is in the right place, but maybe a pact involving a total loss of free will is just… not good under any conditions?

‘To abuse someone who cannot resist—isn’t that monstrous?’

oof. laurent trauma dramatic irony moment

Finally, Laurent said, ‘You overestimate my influence over my uncle.’ Damen began to speak, but Laurent cut him off. ‘No. I—’ Laurent’s golden brows had drawn slightly together, as though he had encountered something that did not make sense. ‘You would really sacrifice your pride over the fate of a handful of slaves?’ He had worn the same look on his face at the ring; he was gazing at Damen as though he was searching for an answer to an unexpected problem. ‘Why?’

context: this reminds me of the way that laurent offered to help nicaise and then realized he couldn’t, because his uncle has too much power over them both. he’s going through the same logical process here re: fulfilling damen’s request. he’s also confused as to why damen has made the request at all at all, because he still sees damen as selfish and immoral, while his request is undeniably selfless and moral. just like earlier, laurent pragmatically asks—“why?”

‘Because I am stuck here in this cage and I have no other way to help them.’

this is how laurent feels about nicaise. fuuuuuck

‘You think this is a trick,’ said Damen. He could see from the assessing look on Laurent’s face that he was right.

context: damen doesn’t realize it, but the fact that laurent is even looking into this is a total win. he is, in a very slight and cautious way, giving damen’s perspective serious consideration.

‘Something amuses you?’ Laurent. ‘What would I have to gain from—’ Damen broke off. ‘I don’t know how to convince you. You don’t do anything without a dozen motives. You lie even to your own uncle. This is country of deviousness and deception.’ ‘Whereas pure Akielos is free of treachery? The heir dies on the same night as the King and it is merely coincidence that smiles on Kastor?’

THIS CONVERSATION IS SO GOOD. both of their kingdoms suck. they’re both helpless and suffering as princes, and they could both make things better as kings. especially if they worked together! this has been here from the very start, it’s SO fucking good. the slow burn isn’t just romantic and sexual, it’s, like, intellectual. ideological. philosophical. amazing.

‘After you left,’ the guard said, ‘he got a visit from Govart.’ Laurent turned back to Damen, blue eyes like ice. ‘No,’ said Damen, knowing Laurent believed this now to be some scheme of his uncle’s. ‘It’s not what you think.’

context: they’re both acting reasonably here based on the information they’ve been given. the coincidence just sucks. damn uncle

"The Monkey King and the Infant" details Part 3 - and likely last for now before I go on Spoiler lockdown so I can write:

The Jade Emperor sees/is aware of the canon Monkie Kid series. He thinks the whole situation as a big waste of time. So... remove Monkie Kid = no Monkie Kid series, Monkey King stays retired, and less of a headache for the big man up top. Win win.

The Jade Emperor shows Sun Wukong visions of the worst parts on the series inc; LBD's return, the Samadhi fire being reignited, The Jade Emperor's death and the potential breakdown of the universe etc... This is also how SW learns on accident that Macaque is alive again.

Internally SW is very conflicted cus... the universe might end? But more importantly he might actually die? But also consider; Free Son and a return to his beloved.

Other characters occassionally get tormented by visions of canon events/death omens - likely a side effect of the altered timeline, or the Jade Emperor subtly trying to turn them against one another.

Erlang and various other mythos characters show up. Erlang is tasked with ensuring that SW destroyed MK's egg, but is knocked out by Moksha (on command of Guanyin) to give SW a chance to reconsider. In the egg's place, Erlang found a "shell" of obsidian. This isn't enough to convince Erlang... but it's enough to convince the Jade Emperor and the few members of the Celestial Court who knew about the Egg that the task had been completed. Erlang is sussing SW hard for this... but wants to see what the big deal is with the undercooked Stone Monkey before he says anything.

Moksha is acting as Sun Wukong's parole officer as a "Sorry I bonked you" favor to Erlang. Shows up in glamour at Pigsy's as customer to keep an eye on things. Big shipper under her no-crap cop attitude.

Guanyin herself is Very Against the idea of scrambling MK (Mercy personified yo). But she doesn't appear physically, meaning that not even the Jade Emperor knows that she techincally betrayed Heaven.

Nicknames/familial titles MK calls his fam through out the story:

Sun Wukong = "Dad" "Baba" "Baba Wu" Macaque = "Mom" "Bama" "Baba Mihou" "Mama" (when he was really young) Pigsy = "Dadsy" "Pops" "Boss" (at work) Tang = "Papa Tang" "Pama" (verbal slip as a toddler that stuck) Sandy = "Shúshu/Uncle" Mei = "Meimei" " (little sister - techically she's older but the title is also a pun on her name) Nezha = "Tánggē" "Gege" (grew up thinking Nezha was an older cousin)

When it comes to finally training MK when he comes of age; Sun pulls a "Lego Batman and Bruce Wayne" - hoping that by separating the personas, he'll be able to reach MK better as a teacher. And MK 100% falls for it. Cus "The Monkey King" and his dorky "Dad" are two completely different guys! Right?

Macaque meanwhile has a very different style of teaching:

Macaque, in his series outfit, manifesting from the shadows: "MK, we need to talk about-" MK, battlemode: "AH! THE SIX EARED MACAQUE!" Macaque: "I'M LITERALLY YOUR OWN MOTHER! YOU PUT THAT STAFF DOWN THIS INSTANT MISTER!" MK: "yes sir"

This leads to a funny misunderstanding later on when he sees Macaque and The Monkey King interact during training:

MK: "Wait... if my mom is the Six Eared Macaque... and I've got Monkey King's powers..." MK: *"GASP!"* MK: "MOM!? Did you you cheat on Dad with The Monkey King!?" Macaque: "...really???" SW: *laughing his ass off*
