Know Your Hip-Hop Pioneers: MC Pebblee Poo

Starting off as a b-girl in the 70s, MC Pebblee Poo was taught how to rap by music producer Dr.Bomb-Bay who frequently took her to DJ Kool Herc park jams. Poo joined DJ Kool Herc's collective, the Herculords — becoming the hip-hop godfather's first female MC. She is also recognized as one of the first female MC soloists of hip-hop culture. Best known for her role in The Masterdon Committee as their Funkbox hits took off by storm, this femcee's 1985 hit “Fly Guy” became a hip-hop classic. MC Pebblee Poo's contribution to hip-hop holds honor and recognition worldwide.

A-T-4 150 Does 2 Like Scratchin'?

Continuation of my picks of records from 1984 that feature scratching... and I begin with a pop record

World's Famous Supreme Team - Hey! DJ (7" Instrumental) this one was produced by Stephen Hague who moved to the UK in the early 1980s. World's Famous Supreme Team had had a big hit with Malcolm McLaren (Trevor Horn and what essentially becomes the Art Of Noise) while Stephen Hague had recently had a bigger hit (in the UK at least) with (Hey You) The Rocksteady Crew. So putting the World's Famous with Stephen Hague made sense. Unfortunately it peaked at 52 in the UK. I prefer the 7" instrumental, the 12" can meander and you get most of what it delivers, including the Beastie Boy/Dust Brothers sample. Talking of samples Mariah Carey/The Ummah, Puff Daddy, Stevie J use this track as the basis for Honey. The track gets sampled a lot. In the original the scratching is presented like a showcase in the middle of the record

Tyrants In Therapy ‎– Three People (Nude Below The Waist) the scratches here are by the Knights Of The Turntables who do the mix. According to wikipedia Tyrants In Therapy were a "punk cabaret" band from LA

Tha Swami – The Swami Scratch we stay on the west coast with Tha Swami. The scratch "effects" here are by Scratchmatic who I shared a cut up mix by the other day. Also on the 12 is the excellently named Scratch Ragious but sadly that's not on YouTube, or at least I can't find it

Triple Threat Three - Scratch Motion (Scratch) Triple Threat Three is that a split-infinitive? doesn't matter does it! What does matter is that they're from Sacramento, California and it's DJ Darryl Dee on the ones and twos

Dee Nasty - Infernal Scratch Machine the only track on the list not from the USA and it's great. Dee Nasty is a French DJ, he's one of the original Nova Radio DJs

Jazzy Jay - Son Of Beat Street Jazzy Jay is a god but this track for the film Beat Street is like Harold Faltermeyer with scratches, Rockit had been a massive hit. Completely different from T LA Rock & Jazzy Jay's It's Yours with its stripped down sound, the bass, and Scratch Party Death Mix. Son Of Beat Street was released as a single and can be found on Volume 2 of Beat Street (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Kurtis Blow - AJ Scratch DJ hype track from Kurtis Blow and DJ AJ. For some reason they chose to sample the scratches and use a fairlight to reproduce them - like Art Of Noise had done

The Masterdon Committee - Musicgram (Instrumental) does this actually use scratches? Not as popular as Funkbox Party but still a nice track. This is when Enjoy start to release fewer and fewer records each year, it's the beginning of the end

Buchla Music Easel External Bassline Generator

The purpose of this video is to explore the control voltage envelope generated from the dynamics of the audio coming into the music easel via the external input. This patch involves the buchla music easel synthesizer and a drum loop from iOS App Synthetic Bits FunkBox triggering the envelope generator and low pass gate of the complex oscillator. The pitch is being randomly changed subtly by the envelope of the drum loop as well. The result is a random bassline generator that perfectly fits the loop.  To add some fun I have the Pulser modulating the low pass gate of the ext. input in lo pass filter mode. This helps create poly rhythms and other variations of the incoming beat. This video only scratches the surface as to what is possible with this concept.
