Richard Hell & the Voidoids- DESTINY STREET COMPLETE (OMNIVORE RECORDINGS)

Over the years I’d heard that Richard Hell wasn’t pleased with his 2nd album, Destiny Street.  I had no idea of the complete history of the record but it is all told here in this 2-cd (4-lp) Omnivore deluxe reissue. Hell had bailed from Television and The Heartbreakers and then formed Richard Hell & the Voidoids in ’76 with the late, great Robert Quine and Ivan Julian on guitars and Marc Bell on drums. For this sophomore album Bell and Julian had left but Quine stayed and they got Juan Maciel on 2nd guitar and Fred Maher on drums. Recorded in 1981 and released in ’82 Hell was apparently never happy with the treble-heavy mix and was told the masters were long gone.

In the early 00’s he found a cassette from 1981 that had just the rhythm tracks (bass, drums and rhythm guitars) and he along with Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and Ivan Julian added guitars and vocals and thus became Destiny Street Repaired. Moving on to 2019, three of the four original 24-track masters were found and Hell, with the aid of Nick Zinner completed the project. For the 2-cd set (that I have) it’s got the original Destiny Street and Destiny Street Repaired on disc 1 and Destiny Street Remixed  and Destiny Street Demos on disc 2.

Ok, it’s a lot of Destiny Street but trust me, it’s totally worth it. The songs are mostly terrific and honestly I don’t  understand Hell’s gripes with the album but hey, I’m not him.  The opening cut angular “The Kid with the Replaceable Head” is a great opener and then they toss in a few covers, a raw take on The Kinks “I Gotta Move” and a more languid version of Bob Dylan’s “Going Going Gone.  From there “Lowest Common Dominator” with Robert Quine’s frenzied guitar playing just smokes and “Downtown at Dawn’ has a cool angularness to it, which makes me wonder how many of those early 00’s NYC bands heard (and loved ) this album (including Zinner’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

Also, the demo versions of these songs on the end of disc 2 (12 in all) are not some hastily tossed on extras but real gritty versions that you really want (and need) to hear. The version of “The Kid With the Replaceable Head’ is looser an (surprise) more great guitar playing plus there’s a swaying version of ‘I’m Your Man” (from the Radar single) and other ones that didn’t make the original album like “Funhunt, “I Lived My Life” and “Smitten” , three that easily could have made the album.

 I think this records shows that Hell, though one of the first one the scene, may have been the most underrated of all the NYC punks as the songwriting on here is stellar. Major kudos to Omnivore for unleashing this unheralded classic that I was in no way prepared for. www.omnivorerecordings.com
