I’m reading a book about the Gilded Age and let me just say, given the choice between living in the 19th or the 18th century, if you don’t want to die in a boiler explosion, pick the 18th for the love of god
#fun fact! Andrew Carnegie’s steel mills had a 25% mortality rate for workers and shifts were 12 hours 7days per week!#also life expectancy and average heights and infant mortality all got WORSE in the 19th century#every single decade except the last#life expectancy in the US among other stats only returned to their 18th century baseline in the 20th century#with real improvements coming only mid century onwards#the bleakest thing is that for most people alive today this is the best and most comfortable life has literally ever been#that’s pretty… bad lmfao#and it is much more comfortable! but we’re at constant risk of backsliding or it all collapsing under the weight of itself and climate#cool!#anyway just wanted to share that lmao
