Playing Cards: The Solution to all your Problems with Random Stat Generation in D&D 5e

The other day I was playing D&D on discord, as you do, when one of my friends brought up their frustration with the default method of rolling stats in D&D 5e: the fact that RNGsus hates her. We commiserated briefly over the frustration of rolling shitty stats before returning to the game, but the thought stuck with me and I worked to solve the problem with my own innovative method of generating random stats. THE PROBLEM

The fun of rolling stats is getting something unique and having to work with it. Did you roll one really good stat and the rest shit? Did you roll moderately good results for everything? Did you get one hilariously low result and have to work out where to put it? All of this is fun and interesting, and part of that fun is the risk involved. Will you roll a coveted 18? or just absolute dogshit?

The problem comes when you actually DO roll dogshit. It doesn’t even need to be that bad, only worse than everyone else. If your highest roll is a 13, you’re just going to feel worthless compared to That One Motherfucker in your group who somehow rolled three 18s (you’d call hacks but he did it right in front of you).

Maybe you think I should just suck it up. I knew the risks going in, I made my bed, now I should lie on it. That’s all well and good for some games and groups maybe, where you can play your character with a death wish, die heroically and then bring in a character that you like more, but that doesn’t always work. Maybe the premise for the campaign is such that its really hard to bring in new characters. Maybe your group Doesn’t Kill Characters. Maybe you had a really cool character concept you wanted to play. Maybe you just don’t want to. All of these and more are good and valid reasons to look for an alternative that retains the fun randomosity of rolled stats without the chance of getting screwed, and thats exactly what this essay has to offer. (If your problem is that your players roll too OPly with their stats, then this article will also he helpful to you. That just isn’t a problem I personally have.) (Man I like to prattle on don’t I? TLDR: It sucks to roll badly when generating stats, here’s my better method:)

THE SOLUTION In a word: Cards. Dice have independent probabilities, meaning that what you rolled last time does not effect what you will roll next, but whenever you draw an ace from a deck of cards, that’s one fewer ace to be drawn in the future. 

Employing this simple fact, we can generate lines of stats that, while random, aren’t actually better or worse than each other. If you get one really good stat, all your other stats will be that much worse for it.

In this post I’m going to go over several different ways to generate stats with cards, depending on the personal preferences of you and your group: How wide a range of stats do you want and how much control do you want to have over them?

THE BASICS

Take a deck of playing cards and separate all the cards from Ace - 6. This will form the core deck from which stats can be generated (we’ll be treating aces as 1s for the rest of this essay)

The standard array has 72 points of stats, while your core deck has 84. You will need to remove at least 12 points worth of cards to provide a balanced deck (sometimes more, depending on your goals)

If you remove the extremes (1,6) from the deck, you will get more average stats. If you remove the moderates (3,4) from the deck, you will increase the chance of getting very high or very low stats

If you want to be able to deal out your whole deck into six even stat-piles, the number of cards you remove from the deck must be a multiple of 6.

If you are using a ruleset that has a chance of providing stats over 18, you may want to impose the rule that any stat over 18 is reduced to 18.

With these points in mind, you can modify my given methods to provide the sorts of stats you want.

THE GENERIC METHOD

This will generate completely random stats that will largely imitate what you would get from point buy, with only a small chance of getting below 8 or above 15. 

With point buy you have 27 points to spend, with scores costing one point per number above 8 and two points per number above 13, to a maximum of 15. This method gives you the equivalent of approximately 26 points of stats (average), with a possible stat maximum of 18.

Take your core deck and remove four aces, a 3 and a 5.

Deal out the rest of the deck into six facedown piles of three cards.

Add up the totals of each of your six piles to calculate your six stats, which can each be allocated to whichever ability you like.

THE FUN METHOD

The generic method is all well and good, but I personally like a bit more variety in my stats. The slow grind of raising your main stat from 15 to 20 is pretty boring to me, so I’m totally down with letting my players start with a base of 17 or 18, but I also love a good 7 or 6 to spice up a character. (One of my main complaints about D&D is I want my character to be really good and really bad at things from level one, but on a d20 a +1 is not too different from a -1 really, and skill checks are often just too swingy for me to feel my character's skills actually matter.) Anyway, with this method, expect your results to be both a lot higher and a lot lower, while still summing up to 72. You may want to rule that any player with a stat lower than 6 ( or maybe 8) should roleplay some sort of disability (either a real world one or a fantasy one) related to the given stat, e.g. missing hand for str or dex, severe illness or curse for con, raised by animals for int, impaired speech or hunchback for cha, etc

Obviously you should be touching base with your GM before using any of these methods, but that is particularly the case for this one.

Remove three 4s from your core deck

Deal out the rest of your deck into six facedown piles. Note that three piles will have three cards and three piles will have four cards.

add up the totals of each of the six piles to calculate your six stats, which can each be allocated to whichever ability you like. If any stat is higher than 18, reduce it to 18.

Note: this method is designed to give you a high chance of getting three really good stats and three fairly bad stats. If you want only two really good stats and not-quite-as-bad other stats, remove four 3s from your deck in step 1 instead.

METHODS FOR MORE CONTROL

Xtra Control Variant: Using one of these decks, deal out two facedown cards to each stat and then distribute the rest of the cards as you like, perhaps dropping five cards into one pile if you want to ensure you get a superstat. 

The catch is that any stat higher than 18 is reduced to 18, so there’s a chance you will over-commit and waste points. 

XXtra Control Variant: Use the Xtra Control Variant but deal the cards face-up!

Xtra Control but more linked to the character and with a chance of fucking you: Use the Xtra Control Variant but deal the stats in order (the first pile is STR, the second is DEX etc.)

Anyway I hope you found this interesting. I think there’s a lot of potential in using playing cards for stat generation and I’ve only scratched the surface: it would be really cool to create some sort of stat generation mini-game!

I have other opinions on things, such as on racial stat modifiers and why they suck, so if this post does well maybe I’ll write about my solution to that too.

Alright. Now comes the doozy.

1.      What’s your preferred writing and reading genre?

Fantasy for both, though I like to read a lot of different genres

2.      What’s your favorite thing about your least favorite character?

Least favorite is tough. The character I’ve been having the hardest time writing recently is General Zhai from The God-Dragon’s Wife, mainly because I haven’t solidified her motivations yet, but if there’s one thing I know about her, it’s that she takes no shit. Which is very difficult for me, because she isn’t taking my shit either.

3.      What’s your least favorite thing about your favorite character?

Again with the favorites! Teconia is fun to write, but I feel bad about making bad things happen to her and making her sad. She gets sad a lot and then I feel guilty. Stop doing that.

4.      Which of your characters do you feel most indifferent towards? Why?

Right now, it’s Park. I don’t think we’d be friends if he was a real person (robot?) because our values are so misaligned, but he’s not a bad guy.

5.      Which of your projects means the most to you and why?

Firesoul, no doubt. It’s been an idea I’ve had since I first started writing, and the fact that I’ve been continuing to write it after all these years is a huge deal for me (i.e. a person who comes up with ideas and then abandons them forever)

6.      Is there a theme that can be found in all of your projects? Was it intentional or dd you realize after the event?

Usually there’s a theme of overcoming – whether that’s overcoming self, overcoming oppression, or overcoming adversity. I don’t do it intentionally, but I think it’s definitely informed by experiences in my life, so it would feel odd to not have it.

7.      What’s your favorite book to read? Does it have any similarities to your any of your writing projects?

The Inheritance Cycle is my favorite book series of all time and it absolutely informs my writing style. I’ve read the first book, Eragon, eight times, and seven of those times was before I turned 16. I’d be shocked if it didn’t.

8.      What have you learnt while writing that you hope everyone knows?

That I can write whatever I want, and someone will like it, even if it’s not the someone I thought would like it.

9.      What’s your biggest strength in writing?

Description, for sure.

10.  What about your weakness?

Too much description.

Seriously, though, it’s plot structure. I suck at that, and I’m awful at outlines.

11.  How many questions do you answer on character profile sheets when creating new characters?

I try to shoot for all of the ones that apply! But I don’t do a lot of character sheets so…

12.  What do you love most about your writing?

I love my worlds and settings. I pour blood, sweat, and tears into them, and I think it really pays off.

13.  What’s your favorite type of character to write?

Smart dumbasses, people who Can’t Handle Feelings, and people who Have Too Much Feelings. I have no middle ground.

14.  What inspires you to write?

Life. That’s probably the most cliché answer on the planet, but I’m very informed by the things I believe and the experiences I have. Even my horror pieces (short as they are) come from places of feeling helpless in my own life, struggling with an undiagnosed anxiety and panic disorder for most of my life.

15.  If you could talk to your protagonist, what advice would you give them?

I would gently hold Park’s metal robot face in my hands and tell him to Stop Taking All Responsibility For Everything. Good God. It’s not all about you, all the time.

I would tell Xinya that it’s okay to feel emotions sometimes. Yes, even that one.

I would tell Teconia that trusting people isn’t always a good thing.

I would tell Hayden that he is capable, no matter what he tells himself.

16.  If you had to do an escape room with one of your characters, who would you choose and why?

Park is a robot and therefore would be very logical about all possible solutions. This could either be a great thing or a terrible thing, but I’ll take my chances with the guy with a computer for a brain.

17.  How did you come up with the plot for your current wip(s)?

The God-Dragon’s Wife is inspired by a (perhaps not astoundingly written) fanfiction I read and said “Psh. I can do that.” That, and my deep held desire to marry a dragon.

Firesoul came to me at an audition for a role in my dance company’s annual Christmas show. I heard this epic, haunting music, and had a vision, essentially, of a scene from the book. Teconia herself is literally a D&D character that I liked so much I gave her a book.

Out of the Park is inspired from way back when I used to regularly play Overwatch, and my main, Zenyatta, had a skin release that was a baseball team. The rest is history/

Dragon Raising actually started as a novel that I never did anything with, because something always felt off about the delivery. When I took a comic writing class in college, everything clicked at once.

18.  What’s one line/paragraph you’ve written recently that you’re proud of?

This is from a submission for a prompt month in a fandom I’m in:

Yugi didn’t believe in ghosts. It was fun to think about, sure, but he’d never seen any “real” evidence to support the idea. His friend Ryou claimed otherwise, but they’d long since learned to agree to disagree on the subject. Of course, they were both partial to a good scare – his second favorite genre for anything was horror – and they could talk about the coolest ghost stories they’d heard for hours. Still, he had never latched on to the idea of the “soul persisting after death.” It was ridiculous, for a lot of reasons. The idea of a ghost in his house – in anyone’s house – was almost laughable.

But he didn’t have a lot of other ideas to explain this.

19.  Do you ever draw concept art for your writing?

I can’t draw, but if someone made me art of my WIPs, I would die LITERALLY for them.

20.  What do you like most about one of your protagonists and what do you like least about them?

Xinya is a powerful woman. She’s capable and smart and will kick your ass in chess. But she’s so emotionally constipated it’s actually painful for me.

Teconia is kind, strong even if she doesn’t know it yet, and loyal to her friends and family. But she refuses to use her strength until it’s too late, which is frustrating for a lot of reasons.

Park is a dumbass. This is both the reason I love and hate him.

Hayden can do remarkable things, but he never gives himself credit for them.

21.  What’s the setting of your current wip(s) and why did you choose it?

TGDW takes place in a fantasy Imperial China, which I chose because I am so sick of Fantasy Medieval Europe #4564

Firesoul takes place in Fantasy Medieval Europe #a billion, but I’m not romanticizing it. Teconia is the poorest of the poor, a racial minority, and has to keep her mage identity a secret to avoid persecution. You see exactly what that’s like in Ethallia for the average citizen, and it’s not pretty, unlike most fantasy settings where Everyone Is Good Except Our Evil King, Who Is Evil For Vague Magic Reasons.

OOTP is my personal idealized Future America, which means there is So Much Socialism. Everywhere.

Dragon Raising takes place in modern day Chicago, which I chose because wouldn’t it be hilarious if someone had to raise dragons in the middle of Chicago?

22.  What are some of your strengths that make you a good writer?

I pride myself on my description and world building, as I’m sure people have picked up by now, but I’ve also been told I’m good at writing character interactions. I’ll take it!

23.  Do you listen to music/have playlists to get you writing?

I’m one of those people who can’t write without music to block out the sounds of the real world. I don’t have any specific playlists for writing – I usually just shuffle my whole library.

24.  Who is the character that is least like you and why?

Personality wise, it’s between Park and Yu-Qi who are the least like me.

Park thinks he has to be the one to change the world – him and him alone – which is just. Come on man. Dismount from your high horse.

Yu-Qi is closer to being the opposite of me because of our similarities, ironically enough. She’s obsessive, possessive, and in a true dragon fashion, she hoards and hoards and hoards. These are qualities I share, but desperately afraid of.

25.  What is the maximum word count you are hoping for your project(s)?

Oh, this is a good question. I’ve never sat down and thought it out specifically, but I think a good novel length is 80k-200k words, so I’ll shoot for that!

26.  Do you write better in the day time or at night?

Night owl. I blame it on being born at 1:30am

Well, considering only two of them exist in our star system, I’ll just guess!

Absolutely! I’ve been reading fantasy since I was in first grade.

I want to open people’s minds and make them think about stuff that they might not have otherwise thought about. And entertain them, of course.

PLEASE give me critical feedback, I’m begging you. My life has been plagued by minimal to no feedback on my writing and it’s so frustrating.

Reading it: depends. Writing it: yes, but I’ve only just gotten into it!

I was about 12 I think? it all started with harry potter, like everything else has, and I regret not a second of it!

my desk, my pc. I can write on my phone but I like to edit as I go and it’s hard to do on the phone.

oh wow ok this is a difficult one bc I don’t think I even have a wip 7 pages long //sweats let me see... aha, okay, I found one! from back in march when I asked people to send me over some numbers for one of those writing memes and @theexitgarden I believe (??) sent me the prompt “I don’t think anyone could be as lovely as you” for victuuri and I kind of got a blind!victor au from it?? wELP here’s the fragment of it:

Does it bother you that your work (or at least the work you’re best known for) is to supplement other people’s creations and not your own?

I guess this question would be more appropriate for an actor, since nothing they ever do is their own. Of course everyone working in Hollywood knows this and doesn’t care. There are hundreds of people that work on every single television show and movie. There may be only a handful of people that get the praise or blame for any given project, but nothing that anyone sees is free of influence from someone other than the creator. The very notion is kind of up in the air. Look at Defiance, for example. The original “creator”—the one who came up with the names “Stahma” and “Datak”, for example—never wrote an episode of the show (this is Rockne O’Bannon). He gets credit for co-writing the pilot episode, but what happened was he wrote the pilot then left the show—and then a new showrunner (Kevin Murphy) came on and rewrote the pilot. And the whole thing was an adaptation, anyway, of a property developed by a video game company, Trion. I guess no one who worked on the show really created anything, if I’m following the logic of the ask correctly, since it was all done to supplement Trion’s game. I don’t think anyone working on the show cared much about that fact.

This is one of the main differences between Hollywood and, say, fiction writing. Everyone working in Hollywood looks at each endeavor as a team project, whereas writers write a book that others help them with (i.e. this publisher is publishing my book; this artist is doing the cover art for my book; this publicist is working to advertise my book, etc.). You can see the difference in attitude when it comes to language creation. A producer/director hears about language creation and says, “Ooh, cool! I’m probably great at it!” (Or alternately, “Oh, brother… I guess now I have to do that too so my readers don’t complain…”)

Anyway, there are lots of different aspects to this question, so let me try to address all of them.

First, in case it’s ever seemed like I’ve indicated otherwise, I really love what I do. I may not like deadlines, and translation is not my favorite aspect of language creation (and translation constitutes 90% of my job), but there’s really very little difference between what I’m doing now and what I was doing ten years ago, vis-à-vis conlanging. Really, the major differences are that there are deadlines, I get paid, and some people outside the conlanging community care about what I do. It’s still language creation. It’s always fun to come up with a new project, and I’m certainly doing that more now than I would have been otherwise. So the simplest answer is no.

I guess, though, you might think I was just putting on a positive face publicly…? I mean, no. In creating a language, there always has to be some pretext—some reason for the language to exist. If you’re creating a language you want to use in your own life, the pretext is very simple: I want to use this language in my life, therefore I’m creating it. The pretext is less simple when creating a naturalistic language. After all, if I’m creating a language for my daily personal use, why would I bother with a fictional history and sound changes, etc.? I’d just create something simple whose sound I like and whose grammar corresponds to what I find easiest to use. For those of us who find naturalistic conlanging interesting, though, the pretext is a necessity. I never liked conworlding or conhistories (or fantasy, to be honest), so in the early days when I would conlang, I’d basically pretend like I had a conworld/conculture, when in fact I didn’t. Really, though, what that amounted to was that I had a lazy conculture: One I didn’t think too much about and didn’t write down. It’s funny. The same attitude a lot of writers have about conlanging (that it’s a timesink that takes away from their story) is the attitude I had about conculturing. Once I realized what a huge role that plays in the lexicon, though, I came to think of it as a necessary evil. And if I had a language project I was really excited about, I would frankly find it very daunting to have to come up with an entire world and people and systems of government and clothing, etc. Seemed like a drag, to be honest.

Creating languages for other stuff is great because I can cut out all that nonsense and let someone else do it. The resultant culture may not be very good (”Oh, sure, that social model is totally sustainable! I’m 100% sure that patriarchal fantasy is super realistic!”), but (and this is the important part) I didn’t have to do it—and I don’t have to take credit for it. Instead, I can just play around with the language. It’s just delightful!

Like right now, for example, I’m running this D&D campaign, and it is so exhausting to have to come up with every single little detail! It’s fun to act out the characters, and there are other parts I like (like coming up with flags and names), but figuring out exactly how many towns and of what size there should be in a given area is just too much! My hat is off to all DMs out there. It’s a lot of work!

Anyway, as for what I’m known for (the parenthetical part of the ask, which may be the main part of it), I might have had a different answer ten years ago, but now, I honestly do not care. I figure if someone cares about anything else I’ve done ever they’ll find it. Those that don’t, why would I care what they think? About anything? I don’t know them. I’ll probably never meet them. And honestly, have you seen some of the stuff that people talk about wrt conlanging? “What’s a better ConLang: Gallifreyan or Tengwar?” The ones who only know me for what I’m best known for are probably not very discerning. But if they don’t care, why should I?

It took suffering through the George W. Bush economy for me to really figure out what I want in life, but I did, and it’s fairly simple. I want to spend as much of my life as possible financially stable and with my friends and family—while pursuing my interests. Previously I thought I also wanted my friends and family to also care about my interests, but I’ve come to learn that that actually isn’t important to me either. No one else needs to care about what I do so long as I think it’s worth my time and effort. Honestly, with the internet and digital file storage, if there’s someone out there who desperately wants to know every little thing I’ve ever done in my life, that will likely be possible. It’s not like last century: That stuff will probably be available indefinitely (barring societal collapse).

Even if you filter all this out and just focus on language creation, I care much more about the status of conlanging in general than I do what I’m known for or not. It bothers me that it’s been almost ten years and neither Hollywood nor the general public really gets conlanging. It’s gotten better, but since conlanging has gotten a lot of widespread attention, it’s also amplified the ignorance. I feel like I get the same questions over and over again and give the same answers over and over again but there’s still the basic assumption that the quality of a conlang is equivalent to the fame of the conlang. I guess language itself is always going to be something that’s fairly opaque, but it just bugs me that very few people have any idea what they should be looking for in a conlang. It’s like watching someone pick up one of Picasso’s really abstract pieces and also a drawing by a four year old and trying to judge which one is more realistic by comparing the colors in each one to the colors of the shirts worn by their family members in the pictures in their iPhone photo album. Like you can try to say, “Hey, maybe realism isn’t the best thing to look for in either of these,” but there’s just so much nonsense in here that why would you even bother?

The only thing that gives me hope (and not just about this, but in general) is that the younger generation seems really amazing. I’ve said that before about the generation before the youngest generation (I think there’ve been two since me…? I honestly don’t even know how you count these things), but honestly, it gives me hope every day seeing the amazing things that even teenagers are doing. It’s an awesome thing to witness. If you’re a part of the 25 and younger crowd, you should feel really good about what you’ve done and the lives you’ve led thus far. (And that’s an in general type thing. If you’re 26, you didn’t miss the cutoff, or anything.) From someone who went to school in the 80s and 90s, do you know how cool it is just to see teenagers be cool about friends and classmates that are LGBT+? Because that so didn’t happen when I was in school. That’s what you did by just living your lives the way you’re living them. That’s awesome. Really makes me believe that we can actually fix the things we (my generation) were told had already been fixed in the 90s.

Sept. 21

I woke up a bit after 11AM.

I started on some exercise after a bit of gaming/YouTube.

First, today’s DD. 40 single leg bridges with EC. Not much to say other than this was very doable! :P

Second, 2′ Warmup Workout. That felt very nice for some tight neck/shoulder muscles from those katana workouts.

Third, Day 1 of my Gladiator Training Plan, focusing on strength and tone. I did the “Robin Hood Workout” at Level 1, but with EC (resting only 1′ in between sets.) That got me pretty bushed, not helped by wearing long sleeves in the summer, but I’m happy I got through it.

Last, Day 12 of the B&CP, with Dad. Mods abound, as expected. Though I encouraged dad to try to make the uneven knee planks a bit tough by creating a straight line from knees to head to get more engagement since he remarked them to be too easy that way. Didn’t do that - but there’s always next time.

After making dinner, doing a bit of the usual downtime, and getting mad at my computer... I did spend a bit of time drawing again, tonight.

Sept. 22

I woke up around the same time as yesterday.

First, today’s DD. 2′ overhead punches with EC. I counted 220 reps by the end. This got a bit tough with sore shoulders, but still quite enjoyable! :D

Second, Classic Warmup Workout.

Third, Day 2 of my GTP. Today’s workout was “Ab Attack“, as “casual training”, done at Level 1, but with EC. I did all the flutter kicks with head up as illustrated. Ooof, my abs really barely put up with that last set of knee-to-elbow crunches (I opted to stay balanced on the butt for full engagement throughout). And neck still wasn’t a huge fan of high crunches, but I was the one who picked this workout in the first place, pffft! :,D

Sept. 23

I got up a bit after 11AM.

Outside of a few moments of downtime - I felt I was pretty busy today. But that’s Mondays for you.

First, today’s DD. 60 shoulder taps with EC (30/30). This was doable but certainly got pretty tough near the end. Loading one side than the next is always a different experience to alternating every rep. Ooof. :U

Second, 4′ Warmup Workout.

Third, Day 3 of my GTP. Today’s workout was “Hardgainer“, for upper-body strength, starting with 10 lbs weights per arm, before realizing I had to take the weight down to 8 lbs after the upward rows. Shoulder presses and tricep extensions suucked, but they’re no less important exercises. Deadlifts are deceptively intense - but more fun to get though.

(After taking a shower, putting laundry in the wash, and more downtime...)

Last, Day 13 of the B&CP with Dad. Yoga Day, like last time, this kicked his ass. But we managed to get through it, with various mods. One being reclined cobblers instead of reclining heroes. Another being instead of pigeon, we did a sitting posture with rear leg bent to 90° or front leg also bent instead of tucked in - I think dad’s ankles and hips need to get a bit more flexible.

Got to bed a bit too late, showing pops some YouTube vids before getting to bed, afterwards.

Sept. 24

I woke up a bit before 8AM.

Got to the facility, socialized, went to Seeking Safety, had breakfast at the diner, and did some drawing while there. My triceps, and generally my arms/shoulders have been so sore from recent workouts, too. :.D

Got home and was really busy, despite so badly wanting a nap. orz

I picked up my meds, baked some take ‘n bake pizza, did the dishes, packed the pizza, filled some pill cases and emptied some wastebins. All before starting on some exercise.

First, today’s DD. 5 reverse grip push-ups without EC. Did them with dumbbells and way too sloppy form to count for EC. This variation is... frustrating and awkward, not helped by requiring the hands planted below waist rather than shoulders. Always felt like I'm going to face-plant and psyche myself out. :/

Second, 2′ Warmup Workout.

Third, Day 4 of my GTP. Today’s workout was “Muscle Factory Lowerbody“, for lower-body strength, done with 10 lbs weights per arm (except I did the goblet squats with 15 lbs on the bar). I looked at this going, "Looks like the calf raises, single leg deadlifts, and the wall-sit will be the easy parts."

I was only right about one of those (calf raises.) I think the fact I did normal deadlifts yesterday meant my lower back was a bit stiff/sore - to add the balance work involved on one leg was quite the test.

I can normally sail through a 2' wall-sit when I have fresh quads and/or enough fucking sleep. That wasn't the case today. Wound up bracing with my arms for the last minute or so. The mat was also sliding away from wall precariously, too. Normally having something funny like Sanders Sides helps - but man I was running on fumes at that point. orz

Despite a tired back, I did get around to putting away my laundry after that.

Sept. 25

I got up proper at about noon, decided I needed a bit more rest for how sore I was and catch up on some sleep a bit.

After a bit of gaming, I got going with my exercise again.

First, today’s DD. 30 circle crunches with EC. This was fun and my abs felt that, but it was also a nice massage for some very sore trapezius muscles.

Second, Day 5 of my GTP. Today’s workout was “Ab on Fire“, as “casual training” done at Level 1 (no EC, wanted to keep things relatively chill). Ah yes, I forgot I picked a workout that required hollow holds - arguably the least favorite part. But I got through it. I did and do enjoy knee-to-elbow crunches!

Third, Classic Warmup Workout... okay, I slotted this AFTER the main workout. Mostly because I forgot to switch tabs, but still felt it was worth doing as a bit of cool-down. :,D

Sept. 26

Been up since a bit before 8AM.

Got to the facility, debated on whether to take a nap but decided I would spend the time leading up to WRAP Group drawing some more. Group went well enough, did debate on doing something crafty with the beads and strings in the art room.

But I decided to do the DD instead. 60 balance side swings with EC. This was a pretty fun and doable! :D

Spent a bit of time playing Solitaire, waiting for my ride. Got home a bit cranky about silly stuff, before spending some time with YouTube, playing games, and the rest of my exercise.

First, Quick Warmup Workout. I like all the warmup routines - but I like this one a lot for the half jacks. =w=

Last, Day 6 of my GTP. Today’s workout was “Ravager“, for overall strength, done at Level 1, with EC. I also mixed up alternating sides and doing things half/half throughout the workout. I definitely looked at this with hesitation due to being so sleep deprived and recklessly drinking too much coffee. So it took a bit of a willpower dig to get through that, but I managed well enough. Liked about half the exercises, too. :P

I spent the rest of my night fiddling with that art project a bit before getting to bed. Which was so needed at that point.

Sept. 27

I woke up a bit before noon.

I spent most of my day on the usual, including music binging (I was looking at LGBTQ+ artists and then looking at Middle Eastern Folk Metal bands... fun, if overstimulating.)

But I did get around to my exercise, if quite late.

First, today’s DD. 1′ squat hold with EC. This was pretty brutal, the last 10" being the worst. Pffft! :U

Second, Day 15 of the B&CP with Dad. A balance & coordination day, so it was pretty chill. We did use the wall  for assist and reps/counts instead of timing intervals.

Third, Classic Warmup Workout. I know, in some respects, doing that program would count a little bit.

Last, Day 7 of my GTP. I decided to do more old DDs with EC as “casual training”. As usual, I did make attempts at others but deemed I wasn’t up for EC’ing them just yet (therefore unrecorded).

December 14, 2015 - 4′ side splits. I warmed up with 50 half jacks, as recommended, which was DEFINITELY a good call. I think my depth was somewhere between A & B - it was pretty intense in my knees. Watching some SaSi was reasonably helpful and this is a fun exercise, but it did take some digging in to get through that last minute.

December 17, 2015 - 20 tricep extensions. Oooh boy, that was brutal. The first 10 or so was alright, but it took some willpower to keep the arms synchronized (up/down planks are easier, being driven by one side then the next, and almost did a couple reps like that).

January 5, 2016 - 3′ uppercuts, swapping sides at 1′30″. I counted 121 reps and oh MAN was that aerobic - because of all the squatting. Probably one of  the most intense kind of punch, but managing 40/minute was pretty satisfying.

January 19, 2016 - 1′ single arm plank, interpreting as the standard 30″/30″. It was a bit awkward keeping my timer on my computer, craning the neck to check where I was. And I did get to trembling there. But mission accomplished!

January 30, 2016 - 120 side leg raises (lateral decubitus; 60/60.) That really made some hip tendons burn good. I enjoyed it though! :D

February 12, 2016 - 40 dead bugs. I remember when coordination for these were tripping me up a lot. So it’s nice having the procedural memory down and I do consider it a favorite.

February 24, 2016 - 80 back leg knee strikes (40/40). This was a lot of fun - but then combat exercises are my bag. I was also starting to feel the accrued fatigue, at that point.

February 25, 2016 - 45″ single leg hops, I decided to double the time and do it with both legs. I counted 171 hops in total and oh that was tough and winding. The last 10″ or so per side meant heavy thuds to the ground due to calf fatigue - but I got through it.

I did 8 additional DDs for a reason - so I can hit a nice 1,300 total ECs (out of 1368 completed). \o/

I think this training plan was kind of a mixed bag - did pick workouts that had less-favored exercises in them, but it all was still worth doing!

With that, I'm set up for a week of the Fighter Training Plan, tomorrow!

Elf'd Up

We welcomed our mischievous little elf into our home about 6 years ago.  Over the last six years, I've realized this little trickster sure is the cause for quite a bit of controversy. 

You either:

A)  Hate the elf and keep him far away from you and your family.

B)  Think he's too creepy for Christmas

C) Feel like it's cruel to tell your kids the elf is watching them I mean, after all, they should want to behave on their own merit, right?!  If you're using him as leverage, you're doing something wrong as a parent, right?!

D)  Want to punch all the "bored moms with nothing better to do" in the throat for going to such elaborate lengths to position the elf in such ways that make you feel like a slacker

E) Have feelings about the elf that can only be explained through expletives

F) Love the idea, but not the trickery...ain't nobdy got time to stage the elf and pick up his mess 

OR...

G)  You're all about getting elf'd up...bring on the creepy faced little nugget and all his elf'in shenanigans :)

Let me just tell you that I've pretty much experienced all of the above.  

For the last few years, I fall into category G.  I am that "bored" mom with "nothing better to do" than place my little elf into mischievous situations every (ahem...ALMOST every) night before I go to bed.  

And I do it for two simple reasons...

These two :)

They get SUCH a kick out of the elf.  They anxiously wake up every morning and scour the house for his hiding places.  They can't wait to see what crazy thing he does next.  Sometimes our elf doesn't move and the boys typically assume he's too tired to fly.  We try not to make a huge deal about it.  Our elf is for FUN.  He's become one of our favorite Christmas "traditions" can I count him as a tradition?!?!?  

He doesn't go back to Santa and report...he just flies back to the North Pole to rest and give Santa hugs, drink syrup, and play reindeer games.  And when the holiday crazies set in, I'm not ashamed to admit that I use him as leverage..."do y'all think y'all should do that?!  Y'all don't want Elfabet to tell Santa tonight, do you?!" ...but those times are few and far between.  Not because they're angels...lawd, no.  But we've always wanted him to be just something fun...and magical... for the boys.  He really does make our holidays extra magical.  Just one of the fun little things for my boys to add to their Christmas memories :)

Our elf's name is ELFABET.  My oldest named him when he first arrived at our house.  That's a teacher's kid for ya ;)  Here are a few things he's done over the years.  Maybe he'll give you some new ideas?!?!  Or prove how bored I really am?!?!  Or maybe you just want to punch him in the throat.  

Elfabet arrives every December 1st and brings the boys breakfast, random trinkets, and pajamas straight from the North Pole (aka:  North Pole Breakfast).

Below are the elf ideas I shared with you last year, but before you get to those I wanted to share what he's been up to in the few days he's been here this year :)

Snap, crackle.....ELF?!  (I found this one to be particulary creepy, but funny nonetheless)

A little game of Pie Face for the win.  I used Cortizone cream for the whipped cream so that I wouldn't wake up to a milky mess come morning.  The boys always wake up before we do and there's no way I was going to wake up early to stage this one. 

It took the boys forever to find the elf in the fridge.  In fact, they woke up at 6:30, scoured the house, and said they figured he was too tired to fly back to our house so they gave up.  It wasn't until we woke up and went to the fridge for breakfast stuff that we alerted them to his hiding spot.  Haha.

And yes...Elfabet needs a bath.  In a bad, bad way.  How disgustingly dirty is his hat?!  Gross.

This right here is the boy's all time favorite .  They still talk about it to this day!

Elfabet got a hold of my phone and went around the house snapping elfie selfies with all of us sleeping.  He left the boys a note  (and some cookies) telling them to look through the camera roll.  If you could've heard their laughs this morning, ohmiword.  Best alarm ever.    They were in hysterics!  He even changed the wallpaper on my phone!  Sneaky son of a gun.  

This is what he got into last year that had the boys in stitches...

He packed the boys a nutritious lunch full of syrup, chocolate syrup, icing, sprinkles, and junk food.  All the essentials for a delicious meal.  And one night he couldn't quite make it to the bathroom in time so he left a little mess on our coffee table.  SO disgusting and so hilarious all in the same breath.  I live in a house full of boys and the potty humor even makes me laugh :) 

And finally there was one night he decided to help himself to some cookies, but he realized how awful those tasted and left a note for the boys letting them know he didn't like them at all.  Silly Elfabet!  Dog biscuits are for DOGS!!  Hahahaha

1.  Elfabet always arrives with a North Pole breakfast.  He brings Christmas socks, Christmas jammies, a Christmas book, and a Christmas movie.  And candy canes, too :)  The menu always consists of hot chocolate and snow covered donuts.

2.  He got into mommy's jingle juice.

3.  Drinking syrup in the pantry...after all, it's one of the 4 main food groups :)

4.  He turned the milk green...and my husband refused to drink it (and we wonder why my oldest is so picky?!?! ;))

5.  He rode a reindeer into town and didn't want to get off.

6.  He loves sugar and processed food as much as we do!

7.  Bless.  He's stuck outside!!!

8.  Reading to his Smurfs.  Smart little fella.

9.  He strung a clothesline from the Christmas tree to the drapes.   Then he hung up the boys underwear and himself...upside down!  This was one of their favorites!

10.  Drawing a picture of he and the boys.  Ha.

11.  Drawing faces on the boys in their Santa picture.  This is the one that scarred my youngest...FREAKED him right the heck out.  He pretty much screamed...then cried...and the picture came down.  This is when I was feeling like option E above.

12.  Wrapped the tree with toilet paper.  I felt like option F and decided this wouldn't be something we do again...once was enough :)

13.  Elfabet is a big fan of The Office, so he made himself a bowl of marshmallows and some hot cocoa while he watched.

14.  "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear."...singing while wrapped up in Christmas sheet music.  See what I did there?!

15.  Taking a bath in a sink full of marshmallows.  When I woke up, my boys were helping themselves to a few for breakfast.

16.  Stuck under a glass in our cabinets.  He stayed there for a couple of days.

17.  The boys were worried he wouldn't follow us to Indiana for Christmas, so he wrote them a letter telling them he'd be there.  Reassurance :)

18.  Another ride on the reindeer...he likes riding in style.

19.  Watching "Elf" under the covers :)

20.  He got into the leftover Halloween candy...and then we had to throw it all away thanks, Elfabet!

21.  He made a shoe mountain and climbed to the top.

22.  Fishing for goldfish in the potty.  With a candy cane.  Landon's personal favorite.

23.  Made himself a little TP hammock in between the boys' stockings.

24.  Coloring a little something special for the boys.

25.  It was a particularly rough day at school for me, so Elfabet hopped in a cop car and pulled over a school bus :)

26.  Even Elfabet knows the real reason for the season.  He stayed here for a few days, too.

27.  A marshmallow message to remind the boys why we celebrate Christmas.

28. Ziplining on tulle right for the tree.

29.  He hung the boys undies on the tree.  They laughed like crazy, and then they were all, "are you gonna take those down before people come over?!?!?!"  Ha.

30.  He was tired of coming up with ideas, so he hung upside down from the chandelier.

31.  Telling Santa what the boys want for Christmas.

32.  He hung the boys Christmas pajama pants from the stocking holders.  This was the year the boys would walk by the display and run their hands along the pants.  Then the stocking holders fell over and all broke.  That was a last for that idea. feeling like option E again...dang elf!!!!

33.  Okay.  This one was a family favorite.  We all laughed pretty hard.  Elfabet stuffed himself inside of a roll of toilet paper and rolled down the stairs.  Hahahaha.

34.  He set out the M&M's for our Christmas cookies and decided to eat a few, too.

35.  See boys, it IS cool to do chores!!!!!  However, please don't use Soft Scrub on my mirrors.

35.  A little Christmas camouflage.

36.  Reading under the Christmas tree.  We recycled quite  few ideas :)

37.  Sack races with the other stuffed animals!

38.  I don't even know where to go with this one.  Mr. SPouse was all, "why would a Purdue guy do that to Elfabet???"  Ha.

39.  Instead of hanging from the chandelier, he hung from a wreath and dropped down a line of candy canes.  

40.  A little underwear swingin' next to the Christmas cards.

41.  Elfabet likes chalk art, too!
