Yes, I’m baaccckkkk (for the most part)!!!! Sorry about that hiatus, but I’ll do my best to get all of these requests done as promptly as my schedule and brain will allow. Thank you all for being so patient with me and for being so supportive, it really means a lot to me! And to celebrate, I’m kicking it off with some heavy duty angst because I love writing it and making myself cry! 🙃😆

Without further ado, @asktenshi-grace requested the backgrounds of the Circus Crew.

TRIGGER WARNINGS. PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: Mentions of abuse, prostitution, abandoment, drug and alcohol abuse, mentions of child prostitution, angst, child kidnapping, selling children, family issues, homeless children, parental death, and body horror/dramatic injuries. I imagine the lives of the circus crew as being tragic as hell to match the drama of the anime. There is nothing graphic in these, it is all briefly mentioned!

•Joker: It has been established that Joker is the bastard child of a prostitute, but his mother remained rather indifferent of him. She at least kept a roof over his head and fed him, but she wasn’t around all the time so he essentially took care of himself. One day when he was seven, he had been left alone for a week and he began to worry- while his mother had often been gone for most days, she had at least returned once in a while to make sure he was alright and to feed him. Police and real-estate folks came to his door one day, completely surprised to find him there and thinking that he broke into the home. They called him a heart-less urchin for breaking into a dead woman’s home and throw him out of his mother’s house. He eventually found out that she died of syphilis and hadn’t bothered to tell anyone else about her son. Prostitutes who knew his mother sometimes took pity on him and would give him some of their earnings if they were ever able to, but that ended when they died of syphilis as well. Often times he walked past his old home, seeing it occupied with a large and happy family. He would envy them and resent them for having something he thought he would never have- until he met the rest of his broken misfit family.

•Snake: Snake was born with lamellar ichthyosis, a very rare genetic disorder that creates very thick patches of skin dispersed all across the body that dries out very quickly (research yo!). He was born in a well off and highly educated family, which is why all of his snakes are named after famous English authors. He was home-schooled for the most part until people came to his home and threatened to kill him, believing him to be some kind of devil incarnate due to his snake-like appearance. Unlike the rest of the crew, his parents loved him very much and argued with these people fiercely. Hating to see how his family’s reputation was being ruined because of him, Snake snuck out while his family was sleeping and ran away when he was ten. He was eventually kidnapped by human-traffickers and was sold off to a freak-show side show as the “snake-man”, where people openly laughed at him and poked fun at him. The only comfort he had were his pet snakes and he would talk with them to cope with the trauma of living in a cage. Of course, the circus crew rescued him one miraculous night when he was fifteen. He was so frightened that he only spoke through his snakes since they were there only ones he ever spoke with, though he slowly begins to come out of his shell when he sees the deformities of the rest of the troupe and is comforted by it.

•Beast: Born as Mally, her mother worked as a scullery maid for a rather upscale family. Her mother was having a secret affair with the master of the house, making sure to keep it a secret from the rest of the family until her mother had gotten pregnant. Her mother did her best to raise her in secret, but eventually her master found out and was thrown into a rage: if it got out that he had an affair with a maid in his house and gotten her pregnant, his reputation would be ruined! He threw the two of them out, when Beast was only three. Her mother had been forced to work as a prostitute, but she was so ashamed and embarrassed at her daughter growing up knowing that her mother worked such a revolting profession that she had abandoned her altogether. Beast had long since forgotten her original name and has been living on the streets for the longest amount of time out of the rest of the first-stringers, which is why she is one of the more hostile out of everyone else. Joker was the first person to come across her, noticing that she was missing her right leg similarly to how he was missing his right hand. She had initially threatened Joker, but seeing that he was just like her and had both of his legs she figured that they would be able to help one another survive.

•Dagger: Dagger grew up in an orphanage and worked for a textile factory. When he was 9 years-old his leg got caught in one of the machines, forcing the factory to shut down for the day. Doctors came and they had to amputate it due to how terribly mangled it was, much to his absolute shock and horror. The orphanage was eventually shut down and he was left to fend for himself on the streets. After living for two weeks in the street, he became terribly sick due to malnourishment, starving, and being dehydrated. Beast was the one who found him, barely alive, and rushed to go get help from the others at the time: Joker, Jumbo, Peter, and Wendy. They scrapped together whatever money they managed to get that day and fetched him medicine, fed him whatever scraps of food and water hey could get their hands on, and did everything they could to get him better. He managed to survive and is grateful to everyone, especially Beast who he had grown particularly fond of.

•Doll: Her mother had died while giving birth to her, and her father had grown to hate Doll and blamed her for her mother’s death. He was an abusive drunk, but one day he stepped over the line. He burnt her face on the hot stove and threw her out onto the streets when she was only five-years-old. The other members had happened to be in that area when they heard all the commotion and seeing that a horrible man had terribly injured a poor young girl was not right. Even though they were young, Doll’s father was their first real kill. Beast and Wendy had taken Doll away from the scene before any real violence occurred, fleeing to a nearby charitable hospital to treat Doll’s wounds. Joker and the others came by to check in on her and visit her every day, and Doll immediately grew bonded with them due to never having recurved any real affection in her life. When she was fully healed, the nurses offered to let her stay at an orphanage. Doll refused, saying that she already found her family. Joker and the others told her that they wouldn’t be able to care for her properly, but she didn’t care so long as she was with them.

•Jumbo: Jumbo was born as an incredibly large baby, so it came to no surprise that his mother had died during childbirth. He was originally raised in an orphanage, but the cost of caring for such a large child became too much for the orphanage to bear and so Jumbo had no other choice but to leave so that he wasn’t a burden on them. As he wandered the streets people openly mocked him and threw stones at him, calling him a monster for being so freakishly huge and fearing that he would be dangerous due to his brutish strength. Beast and Joker happened upon him one day while he was being mistreated and stood up for him against the crowd: Joker got beaten up while Beast scared everyone off with her fiery temper. After making sure that he was alright, Joker offers to let Jumbo join him and Beast seeing as they were all deformed and could help each other out, which Jumbo agreed to.

•Peter and Wendy: When they were babies, Peter and Wendy were sold off to a brothel to serve as entertainment by their parents, who were avid abusers of jinn and other drugs, for drinking money. Peter and Wendy were primarily raise by the barmaids, though that wasn’t saying much since they didn’t know how to properly care for infants. The two thought that they would only ever need each other and refused to let anyone get emotionally near them, and served as entertainment by dancing and doing acrobatics they taught themselves. Once they were approached with the offer to sell their bodies to paying customers they ran away together, figuring that living in the streets and dying would be better than child prostitution. They ran to the East End and found the shelter that Joker, Jumbo, and Beast has made and claimed it for themselves- until the trio came back. There was a bit of a scuff amongst everyone until Jumbo pulled them apart, mostly by picking up Peter and Wendy. Seeing as how they were disfigures as well, Joker offers to let Peter and Wendy stay with them. Being the first time anyone had shown kindness to them the two become suspicious of Joker, but they agree to stay with them. They bond with them basically overnight and are willing to fight and even kill for their family.

I remember one time I was speaking with a group of people and we were talking about some hurt that had occurred in our past due to our loved ones, relationships as well as family. And I was talking about one grown boy that I was previously engaged to. And I was going on about how he didn't love me and that I knew that because of some of the things that he had did to me and how it couldn't possibly be love. So one lady asked me, "What is it that he did that would make you say such a thing?" And I went on to tell them about how he was abusive in all ways but physically, like he never actually hit me or pushed me or anything of that nature. And again, this woman asked me to elaborate. And maybe she could tell that I was beating around the bush or something because she seemed so eager to hear what I was going to say. So, after taking a deep breathe I continued on with my story of how he would always talk down to me and let his mother disrespect me and his father gawk at me. Or how his friends would say a rude or disgusting remark and he say nothing in my honor. Or how he had asked me at some point in our relationship if I would be willing to have a threesome and for anyone who knows me they know I'd do just about anything to make someone I love happy, so I said yes. But his motive behind that question was so that he could use that as a cover story for asking other females for fellatio or just flat out have sex with him and then when he'd get caught or they'd give him extra lip about it he would then say "Oh, no. It's cause my girl wants to have a 3sum." And I always wondered does he think these females are dumb or that I would never see any of the multitude of conversations that were had? And then the woman says, "Well he's just being a man. That doesn't mean he doesn't love you." I said "Well, about if he goes and promises a Hoe, yes a hoe, the same things that he is promising me in regards to our future together? The ring. The life. The family. Hell even the dog that we currently have together." "Honey, you're young and naïve. A Lot of men do that." Now at this point she is pissing me off. And I think that maybe that is just what her husband did to her or all that she has experienced with men. Because if a man is in a committed relationship he shouldn't be doing any of those things previously listed. Now, I guess she must have seen that I wanted to say more but didn't. Because she then asked. "You feel that the other things, the things that you haven't said also make him a bad guy too huh?" And at that very moment that she said that it was a f my neck had been set on fire. Like how does she know what he did & Who is she to tell me how to feel about it. So I looked her deep in her eyes and held her gaze with a long probably overly dramatic pause and said "Would you still think that your husband loved you if he raped you while you scream at tears ran down your face with his hand over your mouth and said that his reason for doing it is so that you may feel his pain and that you needed to be taught a lesson and that it was for your own good and it's because he loved you and that it is your fault that it happened? Huh? After him running down a list of rules as to how he thinks you should treat him as if you're a school child who simply misbehaved? After all that being said to you as if it were him trying to whisper sexy things in your ear, do you think you could limp away in the dead of night with your ass sore from each thrust and your t-shirt drenched from you tears, believing even for a moment that he still loved you and that you loved him?" And yet again another long dramatic pause. Silence filling the space between each individual. No one knowing what to say and even if they should say anything at all. And for a moment it seemed as if the woman wasn't going to say anything else. Her mouth slightly open from the shock that washed over her face. She took a moment, licked her lips and said "And did you stay with him after that?" And the unfortunate answer was "Yes." Then she had the audacity to tell me "Then any hurt that occurred was all on your. You knew what he was capable of and stayed like an imbecile." At this point, I didn't know if I should have smacked this woman, scream in her face, or cry and do nothing due to the fact that she was partially right. After that dreadful night I knew what lengths he would go to to get what he wanted but I stayed for many months after that going through  more and more horrible events with this grown ass boy. Believing him when he said that he would never hurt me like he did that night all because I told him the next morning that I hated him for how he made me feel and that I was leaving. But nonetheless, he smooth talked me back into his arms. He used he same charm that so many people use to get their way. He got on his knees and cried to me about how much he loves me and wishes he could take back what he did. And like the naïve child the woman said I was I took him back, because he did exactly what he was trying to do and that was break me. And since that I night I know that I haven't been the same. My spirit was tarnished beyond repair that night and now I'll never fully believe anyone when they tell me that they care for me. Just like every week when we'd argue and I had two options to either leave and be homeless at the age of 19 or perform any number of sexual acts that he loved and that I despised until he was satisfied and fast asleep like a big baby. And each week I thought that I had no other choice but to perform each and every act that he requested. Even with a face full of tears and snot, he'd still demand, not request me to do these things. Eventually it became a requirement of survival with him. I got to a point to where I couldn't even look at myself in the mirror because I no longer knew the person that I was then. I now look back on pictures from that period of my life and don't know who that is or how she was brave enough to smile and continue on each and everyday. That situation created a woman who was broken coming into the world. She was so broken that any bit of comfort was perfect to her. That night in the car, he destroyed the soul of that 19 year old little girl. And it turned her into a monster for a moment until that broken woman became the surface person. Where that little girl resides no one knows. And that broken woman, she continues her life, one day at a time. Hoping that she'll never have to see that monster more than the 3 times a year that is required. Hoping that he doesn't come in her bubble. Every time she does see him, she freezes hoping that the man that she currently loves comes and rescue her. Those same tears that rolled down her cheek that day, she swears she can still feel the sting of where they dropped as well as his breath on the back of her neck and in her ear as he told her that he loved her when her "punishment" came to a conclusion.

Okay, first, let me lay down some rationale for this game. The Ace Attorney franchise is really, really close to my heart. If Pokemon holds my past and my childhood, the Ace Attorney holds the key to my future – as dramatic as it sounds. The Ace Attorney is what pushed me to take the path of being a lawyer. Of course, it’s not the whole reason (I’m not too keen on putting my whole life and future over a single game, after all), the other is the desire to change all the stupid things that is happening around me. But still, it is what introduced me to the greatness of law, the importance of finding the truth, and the great feeling of satisfaction you get once you have found it.

CHARACTERS:

The Legend, Phoenix Wright

Let me say one thing, it’s really, really weird facing Phoenix in a courtroom battle. For five games, I’ve played as him, and then suddenly we’re battling against him as Apollo in a civil case!? I mean, we all anticipated it ever since we briefly controlled Edgeworth in Trials and Tribulations and acted as a Defense Attorney, but seeing the legendary Phoenix Wright on the other side of the courtroom is still surprising.

And scary. Definitely scary. Seeing Phoenix frown seriously, smirk and do a complete turnabout (which, normally is a good thing for us since we’re normally him) made Apollo (and us, the player) really quake in his boots. It’s like he’s getting back for all the abuse he received for being the butt monkey of the courtroom for the past 4 games!

Other than the very memorable Case 4, Phoenix goes back to being on our side again for the rest of the cases. I especially love the fact that even though 8 or so years has passed; Phoenix’s protectiveness over Maya has never failed. He went to another freaking country just because of a phone call for her! He fought on the wrong side of the truth (which is basically the opposite of his whole values) for her! He knowingly risked his life over her (though then again, this part’s nothing new)!

Every girl needs a Phoenix in her life, man. (NaruMayo ship: *sails*)

Courtroom Revolutionaire, Apollo Justice

Okay, first of all, let me clarify; I KNOW THAT THIS TITLE BELONGS TO ATHENA. But it just fits, you know? (Also, I don’t know how to spell.)

I don’t care that the title of the game says Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney; Apollo is the real star of this game (it’s like the reversed version of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, where the real conflict is about Phoenix.). I believe in the wandering fan theory that this last three games (Apollo Justice: AA, AA: Dual Destinies, and AA: Spirit of Justice) is about Apollo, similar to how the first three games (Phoenix Wright: AA, AA: Justice for All and AA: Trials and Tribulations) is about Phoenix.

And man, how those three games did a wonderful job building up Apollo into the brave little bird he is now. AJ shows how he starts as a rookie defense attorney, DD shows his high school-college past (aka Clay MY GOD *eternal crying*), and lastly, SoJ shows his childhood and ends in how he starts being a professional defense attorney (thus, making a complete, albeit reversed, circle).

Spirit of Justice shows a lot of tearjerker, heart-pulling and gasp-inducing scenes for Apollo that at this point in time I don’t know how he managed to not break down. Oh wait, he did break down, he even have a new, special animation for it. And my god that scene… I didn’t shed a single tear at that point, because I was just so horrified and overwhelmed and whatishappeningisthisreallyhappening. Yeah, that feeling. (I did cry, a lot, but at the later point of the game since it took time for my mind to acknowledge that ohmyggoditreallyhappenedhuuuHUHUHUHU-)

So yeah. Apollo really received his most-deserved characterization and development in this game.

The Funeral Prosecutor, Nahyuta Sahdmadhi

Nahyuta. Nahyuta… Is my baby. Because, really, he’s just so cute and naiive in some of the things! I mean sure, he’s really nasty, but so are the other prosecutors and you don’t see me hating on them (in fact Franziska is totally my role model). But we can’t all deny the fact that he’s really kind and gentle on other people, look at Ema for instance (it’s clear that he likes her btw, I just can’t decide if it’s platonic or romantic, since my KlEma heart’s really against it).

And just like any main prosecutors in any games, Nahyuta receives wonderful characterization and character development as the game progresses. Similar to Apollo, a lot of tearjerker scenes is about him, especially when you discover how much has he sacrificed for his family…

And Nahyuta’s totally an overprotective brother to Rayfa. I can’t wait to see the next game just to see their post-game interactions.

The Ace Assistant, Maya Fey

MAYA. SHE’S BACK. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-

Ace Attorney fans have fully risen from the dead the moment the trailer showed Maya returning for this game. It’s what we have been wishing for in these past two games! Our beloved Ace Assistant is back! And partnered with Phoenix no less! Sarcastic conversations! Funny interactions! Ladders vs. Stepladders!

Our original Ace Attorney duo is back! AAAAAAAAA-

But still, of course 8 years have passed, so it’s inevitable for Maya to change. Even though most of the time she’s still childish and funny, there are still many scenes scattered all around the game that shows her all grown up that you can’t help but remember her older sister, Mia. The game shows Mature Maya, the Leader of the Kurain Village.

Also, the Spirit Channeling scene is very, very beautiful. I’m glad that we actually saw it for the first time.

The Priestess, Rayfa Padma Khura’in

Princess Rayfa is a cinnamon roll. A tsundere cinnamon roll, and that what makes her a very cute and wonderful and funny assistant.

Serious talk though, Rayfa is the youngest (except for Ahlbi) character to be introduced in this game, and it shows. Although she acts all high-and-mighty and incredibly mature due to her status as a priestess, there are times that her childishness shows true. And I think it’s completely okay – and Phoenix and Maya does to. She tries too hard to immediately grow up , but what she doesn’t know is that being true to your age gives you wonders too.

And, oh god, the pressure given to her by her mother… I can totally relate.

That scene when she was asked to show her (adoptive) father’s death in a Divination Séance… it made me cry for Rayfa [seriously, this game made me cry a lot]. Sure, we’ve seen her faint a lot of the times, but it’s only for dramatics; to show how horrified she was that we beat her. But that scene… is the real deal. We actually saw Rayfa going pale, gasping for air, eyes wide… and faints. It’s – just – so heartbreaking…

The Dragon, Dhurke Sahdmadhi

Oh my gosh, where do I even start.

*cries*

My first impression of Dhurke during the trailer was he’s the typical rebel antagonist in a game. And it continued on as we first got a glance on him at the end of the second trial.

Oh boy am I glad to be wrong.

I admit – Dhurke has not been a particularly good father to Apollo. Sure he’s got his reasons, being busy with the rebellion and all, but imagining a little Apollo hoping for his father to show up, pick him up and get him out of his misery – yet incredibly devastated as later, he will know that no one will show up, really broke my heart. Apollo did not deserve that. No child deserves that.

But oh man, he still loves Apollo. He loves Nahyuta. He loves Rayfa. He loves his children – anyone playing the game can see that. He just shows it in a different way, but every action he takes – it’s for the sake of his family. (Nahyuta really is similar to his father)

Too bad he’s not even alive. I can’t believe all the time we’ve spent with him as Apollo is… not exactly a lie, the interactions with him is the truth – he loves Apollo. But… you know.

Imagining his thought process while he was being spirit channeled by Maya and spending time with his son he had only seen now for the past two decades… is very depressing.

The Childhood Duo, Athena Cykes and Simon Blackquill

I admit, I am disappointed with these two. Well, not these two exactly, they’re perfect just the way they are (I MEAN CAN YOU BELIEVE IT SIMON AND ATHENA TEAMING UP. THE PSYCHOLOGY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS, DEFENSE-PROSECUTOR DUO IS TEAMING UP AAAAAA-), but I’m more sad in the roles they are given. More specifically, the wasted potential of their roles.

The theme of the whole game is inheritance. Inheritance from parent to child, and inheritance from teacher to student. And Athena and Simon’s ace – Psychology – is literally that, an inheritance from Metis Cykes!

They don’t need to create a whole batch of other characters. I’m not saying the Rakugo case sucks – it’s very new considering we have another Japanese culture-themed case; and the fact that a psychological disease (the multiple personalities stuff) is the main turning point of this case makes it a perfect case for Simon and Athena – but maybe they should have used it for the next game?

Athena and Simon were only introduced in the last game – so I’m definitely hungry for more backstory and deeper characterization for these two wonderful characters. And what better way for us to get to know more about theme more intimately than to get to know these two’s most important person, Metis Cykes, and her gift to them?

But hey – I’m complaining but I’m not particularly shunning these two and Case 3. As I said, Case 3 is a wonderful and genius case (but what would you expect from Ace Attorney, right?). It’s just that, the potential…

The Game

So far, this game has the largest amount of ‘gimmicks’ or ‘powers’ featured. Phoenix’s Magatama, Apollo’s bracelet, Athena’s Widget, Ema’s Forensic stuff, and the newly introduced Rayfa’s Divination Séance. I think the only missing power is Edgeworth’s Logic Chess, and we have the complete set!

Each of them is unique and special in their own way, and they definitely made the game much more exciting and enjoyable. OF course, the traditional courtroom battle is as hard, mysterious and exciting as ever!  I cannot even predict who the culprit was in the start of the case, and if it was obvious who did it (like, it was showed in the initial cutscene or was directly implied), I can’t figure out how he/she did it without the help of the character I’m acting as. Which is a new thing for me, since in the past games, I already know who the real culprit is even before the player character knows. Well, most of the time, at least.

And the plot, oh the plot was absolutely complicated and mind blowing it’s wonderful. The family drama is as – if not more – dramatic than the T&T one. And that’s saying something, considering that the Fey clan’s story is really complicated too. And as I mentioned earlier, this game gave meat for the characterization of several characters.

Also, it made me cry probably around ten times.

 FINAL REMARKS

DO I EVEN HAVE TO? GO PLAY IT. Though if you still haven’t play the previous games yet, do that first THEN PLAY THIS. THE STORY IS GOOD. THE GAMEPLAY IS AWESOME. THE CHARACTERS ARE WONDERFUL. *eternal scream*

 FINAL NOTES: I’M SORRY IF I MISSED ANYTHING. What I wrote here are the things that really stood out to me. My aim is not to review everything about the game, but to write what I remember the most and what my reaction to it. If I did react to the whole game, it would take about 20 pages or so in MS word. (This is 4 pages, btw)
