As part of my ten day vacation in the United States before heading to Korea for my new job – find out more here – I spent two nights in Washington D.C. Having never visited or stayed in the city, I was surprised to see just how much much the cheapest hotel options cost. Thankfully, because I’m a Genius member at Booking.com I received a whopping 28% off my stay at the River Inn in the Foggy Bottom district of the city. If you’d like to learn more about why I use Booking.com and how to use the website, you can read my guide here. For the purposes of this review I’ll be discussing pricing in terms of the numbers quoted for non-Genius members, as I’m aware not everybody is a part of the programme.
To see my other hotel reviews for cities in Asia, Europe and North America, click here. For a vlog on my time spent in the city and a more in-depth look at the room itself, you can subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
Cost
For two nights, one of them being a Saturday, I paid $250 for a studio apartment. Like most cities across the globe, prices for Fridays and Saturdays are slightly inflated, so if you’re staying midweek I suspect you’ll pay a little less than the $125 nightly fee I was quoted.
It’s also important to note that all Washington D.C hotels have a standard 14.95% tax on top of room rates, and many have what they call Resort Fees. The River Inn does not have such a fee, however others that I looked at ranged from $20 per night to $30 per night per guest.
Location
Nestled in a quiet residential street on 25th NW between I and J streets, the River Inn was just a 2 block walk from the Foggy Bottom metro station (blue, silver, orange lines) and 11 from the Lincoln Memorial.
The hotel itself had a highly recommended restaurant, but there were plenty nearby at all price points. There was a 7-Eleven a block over, and Union Station was a fifteen minute commute via Metro. Foggy Bottom is one of the most popular neighbourhoods in D.C and alongside neighbouring Georgetown are a hub for students and young professionals. Compared with other accommodations in a similar price range, the hotel had an outstanding location that was central and accessible without the chaos of a downtown location.
I will also add that you have to pay by card at the front desk and the cost of your stay plus a $50 security deposit will be charged as a pending fee to your card at check-in but the amount, minus the deposit if you haven’t damaged anything or charged food to your room, will be taken from the account when you check out.
Decor
The hotel was, for the most part, very modern and minimalist in ya decor. The front patio area had tables and chairs with trees covered in fairy lights, where you could go to work or use the restaurant services and eat outdoors. The small restaurant, the reception area and hallways to rooms were decorated in varying shades of browns and creams. This decor slightly juxtaposed the modernity of the actual room, but added a warmth and cosines to the building whilst leaving me with the feeling that the place I was sleeping was crisp and clean. The white walls, contrasting deep wooden floors and blue accents really reinforced a sense of modernity and freshness in the room.
Whilst typically I’m not a fan of varying interior designs and concepts within buildings, but I think this was done deliberately to evoke such a feeling in guests and was both a smart move and well executed.
Rooms
There are 4 room types within the 8 floors of this hotel, from Studio Queen to a Potomac King Suite and prices ranging from £119 to £214 per night. I opted for a Queen Studio, which included a king bed and sofa as well as a small kitchenette, bathroom, large desk space and a small getting ready area outside the bathroom. The room itself was huge, with plenty of space for 2 people plus an infinite amount of luggage.
The kitchen had a full sized fridge and freezer with a gas stove top, microwave and Keurig coffee machine supplied with pods. There were two sets of dishes, cutlery, mugs and glassware. From there was a large desk, which was also the only place in the room to eat at a table aside from the small side table at the sofa. There were windows that spanned the width of the room, allowing plenty of light in despite another tall building directly facing the hotel. There was a double fitted wardrobe with safe, iron and ironing board, plenty of hangers and space to stow away suitcases and bags.
Besides the kitchen, which was a little outdated, the fittings and fixtures in the room and bathroom really impressed me. Kohler bathroom fittings with a huge ring-lit mirror, bedsides lamps equipped with two sockets in each and plenty of sockets throughout the rest of the room. It was simple in its design, but an elevated simplicity.
Amenities
This is a section that sometimes I’m unable to fill out in these reviews, but thankfully the River Inn offered plenty of those, too. Like I mentioned earlier in this article, there is a restaurant attached to the hotel where room service can be ordered or you can opt to eat in the restaurant itself. On the fridge door there was also an option to order items to stock the fridge, so you can use the kitchen. In all honestly, unless you’re visiting on business and have a fully covered stay then I’d recommend shopping at the 7-Eleven instead because prices were pretty inflated. There was also a full laundry service that was collected daily, at a fee, whilst rooms were being turned over. Over the summer months the hotel also offers free bikes to explore the city, free attendance at a yoga class in Georgetown once a week and some discounts to other health and wellness activities in the surrounding area.
Cleanliness
Thankfully I was pleased with the cleanliness of this hotel, both inside and out. Each morning the fallen leaves were swept up from the sidewalk in front of the building and then it was hosed down, the reception area, corridors and restaurant were clean and the room immaculate.
Staff
Again, I’m glad to say I was delighted with the service. Any queries we had regarding directions and restaurant recommendations we were given an abundance of recommendations and help. Around fifteen minutes after check-in we received a courtesy call from the front desk making sure we were happy with the room, which is the first time this has happened for me and really added a nice touch to the stay. When we called on our first evening to ask for our air conditioning to be lowered, a porter was with us within five minutes and fixed it right away. Lovely, lovely staff and excellent service all round.
If you aren’t able to tell by this point in the review then I’m happy to tell you I was thoroughly delighted with this stay. If ever I make it back to D.C I will for sure stay here again and will recommend it to friends and family. Reviews:
It was nice and close to the metro station and the neighborhood was pleasant. I also liked that they sent me everything I needed in my confirmation email.
I liked the neighborhood. It had character. It is across the street from an elementary school. A regular neighborhood, comfortable accommodations, all in all excellent
The older building has some character and warmth which was a plus. Great location close to some great restaurants, bars, and convenient for traveling around DC. Full kitchen was a perk though we didn’t partake due to work constraints. Pet Friendly with a fee.
Location and access to a kitchen were the reasons we selected the inn.
The property is on a residential block and is really a home converted into an inn. It is more like a brownstone. Olivia was very sweet. Since we were 4 we were given the loft which is a walk up. You have access to the entire house but we really only used our room. There is a restaurant/bar on the corner and a large selection of stores and fast food places are about a 2 block walk. For finer dining you do have to go a little further. We were lucky and found parking directly in front of the inn. To see the sights one is better off taking a bus or the metro which is where the shops and restaurants are also a 2 block walk. Buses are $2. and children are free. On our last day we drove to the Capital and were able to find parking directly in front of the lawn. Metered parking. Warning!!! all meters with red caps are for handicapped. Luckily someone told me.

Bed was amazing. The food was fantastic and the staff very helpful
it looks very cool, and very convenient. Pretty close to Georgetown
Beautiful hotel in a renovated old church. They totally welcomed me having a dog (gave her a dog bed and bowls) and everything was gorgeous and simple and lovely.
This was the first time I stayed at The Line, and it certainly won’t be the last. In fact, I’m booking again for next week. The staff was efficient and extremely courteous, and the services and amenities are excellent.

Reviews:
This Motel 6 was fine for our needs. It was quiet, clean, and located well for us. It was also cheap which is what you want in a Motel 6. If you are looking for frills, you need to get else where and pay more. For us, it was quiet, clean, convenient and the staff was helpful and friendly.
A comfortable, clean establishment, and a very spacious room. Located in a relatively quiet district, but with good connections and amenities. Nearest Metro station is Takoma, which is on the Red line (direct connection to Union Station). There are a number of cafés &c. in the vicinity of Takoma station, and there is a large Safeway grocery-store very close to the motel (and open late), on Georgia Avenue in the downtown direction.
They did not have our reservation we were turned away
Convenience to public transport, cheap laundry facilities, friendly staff
Near shops. Polite staff. Machines to buy soda/microwave.

Reviews:
Very friendly staff on the first night; comfortable bed.
Hotel has good location, which is the traditional blocks near White House. You can see the history of this city. There are many perfect restaurants near the hotel. I went to anywhere by bus or metro. The crews in hotel are nice, and they have a lovely cat sleeping on the lounge. If you just need a warm and clean sleeping bed, that’s it! But if you prefer the luxury room, you should go to Hilton.
The convenient location, the friendly desk staff, the price, the charming decor and building.
Easy to find and it was convenient that there was a microwave in the lobby.
It’s good value for money and much cheaper than the venue for my meetings

Reviews:
I loved the staff and the layout of the lobby. Very nice. And I loved the 24 hour access to the gym.
The only thing I can say that I liked is that it was a beautiful hotel once I got in.
The room service food was very nice. Housekeeping was amazing Very polite Very Comfortable bed Decent bathroom Walk-in Closet Nice tv Spacious
It’s a beautiful hotel. Good location. The price was right.
I only stayed at the hotel for one night, but it was a great stay. Overall, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I had a massage at the spa, which was small and simple but it did the trick. I think it’s ridiculous that you have to pay for wifi when you’re already paying so much for a room – how is free wifi not standard at these nice hotels by now? Besides that, no major complaints. All in all a beautiful old hotel in a fantastic location.

Located very close to DuPont Metro. Beautiful inside. Amazing shower. Comfortable bed! Wine hour everyday from 5-6!
The bed was great. Complimentary coffee and wine in the lobby were also quite nice. Bathroom was very nice. The restaurant is outstanding, but a bit pricey. I do mean the food was outstanding.
The location is great and the staff was very friendly. Upon arrival there were 22 people ahead of me for check-in. There was a very sweet woman passing out free wine to the guests waiting to check-in. I chose to leave because I had an appointment and could not wait. I returned at midnight to check-in without difficulty.
It is in a great clean neighborhood with many restaurants and things to do in the area. Staff was super nice and friendly and made feel welcome. Valet also extremely friendly.
The calamari supreme! Also discover my new favorite white wine, Jean-Marc Brocard 2015 Sainte-Claire (chablis)

It was a beautiful hotel. The hotel was located near the subway and lots of restaurants.
very comfortable and pet friendly; 10 min drive to downtown and 25 min drive to Alexandria. staff were very helpful and accommodating since I brought my pet! I would deff go back
The employees were absolutely amazing! We had some issues one night but the gentleman who checked us out was more than willing to help us and make sure our experience was great!
We loved the location of this hotel property, the awesome concierge service, and staff, our room and floor, the complimentary breakfast each morning during our stay, the gymn and shops, how quick it was to get to sightseeing attractions, and the hotel restaurant. This will be where we stay whenever visiting the DC area. We just loved it!
Having stayed here 8 years ago, our expectations were pretty high. Unfortunately, the hotel got old without any refurbishment and it shows. But, the exterior still looks incredibly well, as well as most of the common spaces. The rooms are fine, but slightly worn out. National Zoo and National Cathedral are just a close drive away.

Life in Ghana 1 (8/2 - 8): 2 Countries, 1 Week
On my first week in Life in Ghana, I talk about the beautiful city of Istanbul (during my layover) and my first impressions of Accra and Dodowa, Ghana.
I. How I ended up in Ghana
When I was talking to my program director on where I should go for my final semester abroad, Africa was my penultimate option. My last choice was the Philippines because that would be cheating. The whole point of going abroad is to go to a place where I have not been before and learn about their culture aside from their health system.
I only had two conditions:
It would be a country similar to the Philippine health system in some way; and
My thesis will be related to health financing, particularly social health insurance.
I originally wanted to go to a Latin American country, as the Philippines is similar to them economically, but that was not possible since I need a working proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese. My second choice was Thailand, but Georgetown did not have direct linkages there where I would be able to study health insurance.
After a series of conversations with my program director, Ghana was chosen because:
Georgetown has been sending students to different sites in Ghana since the program started;
I would be studying the Ghana National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which in a lot of ways in similar to PhilHealth; and
My preceptor, Dr. John Williams, is a well-connected, kind mentor who will be able to help me get the data that I need.
This is my first time in Africa. According to my friends who have been here before, I could not have asked for a better country than Ghana as an entry point to Africa. They speak English (so no language barriers there). The country is politically stable (nope, this is not war-torn Sudan). The people are warm, kind, and hospitable. Needless to say, I had very positive expectations.
II. Istanbul Layover
When I booked my flight from Taiwan to Ghana, I wanted the least number of layovers. The two most affordable options were Ethiopian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. I decided on Turkish Airlines because I have heard good reviews about it, and I wanted to take a city tour of Istanbul during my long layover.
Turkish Airlines knows how to treat their economy passengers right. The catering was the best one I have had so far, and they also give complimentary dental kits, slippers, socks, eye masks, and ear plugs to help you relax and sleep. The leg room was also spacious because their Boeing 777 has a 3-3-3 layout instead of the usual 3-4-3.
During my nine hours in Istanbul, I was able to take the complimentary city tour that comes with my ticket. Here are just some of the wonderful photos I have taken during my trip (Activate Flash to view the Flickr slideshow; if you cannot view the embedded slideshow, then access the slideshow here)
III. My First Few Days in Ghana
I arrived in the capital Accra at around 7 pm. Before I reached immigration, I was briefly stopped by a health officer to show my yellow fever vaccination certificate. When I reached the immigration counter, the immigration officer did not give me the full 3 months stay allowed in my visa. He only gave me a 60-day stay, after which I would have to renew it.
My final destination is Dodowa, a town 39 km away from Accra. Dodowa is the capital of the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region. Dr. Williams is the Director of the Dodowa Health Research Center (DHRC), where I report to work everyday.
Dodowa Health Research Center
For the first month, I am living in Efa Guest House, which is a 10 minute walk from DHRC. The DHRC guest house, which is right beside DHRC, is still wrapping up with construction. Hopefully, it will be finished next month, just in time for the two Georgetown undergraduate students arriving for their practical experience abroad. I will be living with them in the guest house, but we will be working individually on our different topics.
Efa Guest House
My temporary room - bedroom and cabinets
My temporary room - refrigerator, TV, bathroom
I was picked up at the airport by Sebastian, one of the drivers of DHRC. The drive from Katoka International Airport was about an hour and a half. By the time I arrived at the guest house, it was around 9:30 in the evening. I was tired from the two-day journey so I went to sleep as soon as I took a quick shower.
The next day, Thursday, Sebastian drove me to Accra mall to buy essentials. I bought a small electric kettle and a steam iron, as well as some snacks. I also got a Vodaphone prepaid sim card. Their 3G plans are cheaper and faster than what we have in the Philippines (ahem, telecom industry).
Accra Mall
On Friday, I was able to meet Charity and her family. Charity has always been the one cooking meals for the Georgetown students, and this year is no exception. I told her to give me the full Ghanaian experience: all the starches and all the common viands eaten by locals. Ghanaians eat with their hands, which I love because Filipinos love to eat with their hands as well. Ghanaian food is spicy, and even with my high tolerance for spicy food, I can feel the heat.
Jollof rice with chicken - can you see how spicy it is?
Fish stew with fufu. Fufu is a starchy staple made with green plantain and cassava flour.
Fried plantains (think banana-Q!), red red (a lentil stew), and banku. Banku is a starchy staple made with maize and cassava flour.
I also had a long conversation with Dr. Williams on Friday. We were able to talk about each other’s lives. I told him how the past three years have been very colorful, having dropped out of medschool, worked for the government, co-founded a research consultancy firm, and gone to Georgetown. I also found out that he was new to DHRC himself. For the longest time, he was working at Navrongo Health Research Center up north, where he also served as the supervisor of the Georgetown students that end up doing their research there. He only became director of DHRC earlier this year. WE also talked about the direction I will be taking for my thesis. We both decided that until August 15, which is the deadline for the institutional review board (IRB) submission, I will be working in the office finishing my proposal. Ayisha, the administrator, also assigned me a temporary workspace in the second floor
Room 9 of DHRC, where I am temporarily stationed.
Up until Friday morning, Sebastian was driving me around. On Friday afternoon, it was my first time walking back home from the office. I went home around 3 pm because there was a blackout, and I did not have enough battery in my laptop to continue working anymore. Ghanaian (well, most of African) soil is red. It is a type of clay soil called laterite, containing high concentrations of iron which gives it its rusty color (This bit of info brought to you by The Guardian).
The red dirt roads of Ghana
I did not go out of my room for Saturday and Sunday because I have been doing research for my proposal. But I had a short break when Lovelyn, one of the Charity’s relatives, came over and delivered my lunch. Through the help of Neena, an undergrad from the previous Dodowa cohort, Lovelyn and I were connected on social media. We had a nice chat about her family. I found out that she is currently working in the capital, so she stays there on weekdays, but she wants to go to college soon, hopefully this year or the following. She told me that I will be able to spend time with the whole family next weekend. I will be able to introduce Filipino games for the kids to play. I already have a lot in store, such as agawan base, sili-sili maanghang, langit lupa, bubuka ang bulaklak, 21, and 7-up. I will hopefully also learn how to cook some Ghanaian dishes, which I really look forward to because I think the ingredients are all available in the Philippines.
On Monday, I met Irene, who was the one fixing my logistics months before I arrived here in Ghana. She was not available last week because she was sick. She introduced me to Comfort, who is one of the maintenance staff at the center and does the laundry for the students.
On Tuesday, I attended the research center’s bimonthly staff meeting, where Dr. Williams introduced me to all of the staff present. In the meeting, they discussed issues that were common to conducting research - data management, budget, training of field workers, etc. The most interesting agendum was when they started talking about a communication strategy for their research outputs. There was a consensus in the room that they want to communicate beyond writing journal articles and presenting in conferences. They want to learn how to maximize social media for science communication and developing that research network online. One of those present in the meeting (I did not get the name) said she knows a friend who can help them with that for no cost, so their action point on this matter was to contact that friend and set up that training session. I was glad that they had that mindset, as part of the reason why I am maintaining this blog is because I want to help in digesting complicated information.
But the highlight of this week was how I was able to finalize my thesis topic, which has already been approved by my supervisor. I want to compare the perceptions of quality of service delivery between patients that are covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme and those who are not. This specific research objective is stated in their current national health research agenda, so I feel glad that I am doing research that has substantial impact in policy making.
Overall, Ghana reminds me a lot of the Philippines, especially in the area where I grew up in. I’m still adjusting to people staring at me while walking on the street because I am probably the only Asian for miles and miles, but the people in general are very warm and polite. I have a feeling I will love Ghana, and I would not want to go home by the end of my 11 weeks here.

Journal Entry #21 - Happy Independence Day, Volunteer Life, and Community Service
JOURNAL ENTRY #21 Name: Manley M Collins Social Security Number: 5 7 9 - * * - 6 5 4 1 Date of Birth: 06/21 Place of Birth: Washington, District of Columbia Country of Birth: United States of America Date: July 31, 2017
TOPIC: Happy Independence Day, Volunteer Life, and Community Service DEPARTMENT: United States Department of Agriculture DEPARTMENT: United States Department of Labor DEPARTMENT: United States Department of Defense
Happy Independence Day to all United States of America citizens and upcoming citizens. Thanks to all the servicemen and servicewomen who fulfilled and are fulfilling the tasks to help America keeps its freedom and independence AND promote democracy in other nations. It has been an interesting journey doing food in a variety of ways. I always had a volunteer life and community service life. I spoke about it very little or it is on LinkedIn. Since I do not have the money to donate, donating my time is the next best thing. Let's start with month of July.
I enjoy the new life breathed into First Baptist Church of Washington, DC. I enjoyed one of several social events across the city of Washington, which was the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Summer Organ Recital Series 2017 plus BusBoys and Poets Brookland. It was my first time at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It had wonderful designs per dome and beautiful storytelling per dome, stained glass windows, or exterior/interior columns. The Basilica has five masses starting as early as 5:15 AM and latest one 9:00 PM. The Basilica has The South Gallery Organ and The West Chancel Organ, both housing 9,393 pipes, from which 157 stops play 172 ranks. The largest pipe of the south gallery, standing nearly 40 feet, weights close to 900 pounds, while its smallest pipe is no bigger than a simple pencil. You would need a copy of the program to see all the names of the instrument or pipes…..I said ‘WOW!” to everything.
Position #32 - Capital Area Food Bank I started the month volunteering for a community event for 16 years and older on L St NW between First St and New Jersey Ave. Two different communities (Asians and other minority groups). The Asians must have been there since 3 AM. CAFB was very hip to use keycards/keytags to keep track of households. CAFB gives very fresh food. I even had to sign up even though South Carolina informed me first how free food distribution works with the free lunch program and mom collecting can goods, the 12 inch block of government cheese, and white paper canned peanut butter; and New York provided additional education on how free food distribution works regarding its CSA programs. Illinois gets no credit for what it did.
Position #33 - Bread for the City It is very unique offerings. I only took advantage of the food distribution program. I attended a volunteer orientation session to start my volunteer relationship. Great food distribution program, but wish there was more ready-to-eat type foods.
Position #34 - Central Union Mission This men only shelter is a unique group of people. The setup is great and offering all the type services, laundry, various improvement programs, bed/sleep distribution around 3pm daily, and security wand you down at the door. I am volunteered in helping with clean up of the shelter and serving dinner. This is starting my volunteer relationship. I think something is the food, but I am allergic to something maybe the meat since I have not ate certain meats after a long period time. I love the cupcakes and cookies. The full service meal is great...the serving of water became larger. I enjoy seeing traveling organizations, radio stations, corporations, and other neighboring Virginia/DC churches serve as volunteer.
Position #35 - Martha's Table First, this organization seem small, but when I discovered it calendar and other services. It is a large non-profit organization with plenty to offer for everyone. The meals are unique. it may be mish-mash, but you get all your needed nutrients. I love the sandwiches, lemonade, trail mix, and fresh fruit for later. I have started my volunteer relationship even though I have to book a month or two in advance.
Position #36 - S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat) I was first introduced to this organization through a member (Ken) of my church years ago around 2010, but did not know what the organization was. In 2017, I heard they served breakfast and lunch. All the shelters bus those who want a full course breakfast or lunch. Families and women are more acceptable here. A lot of male cliques are here. I took the time to volunteer. I got the souvenir hat, a printed name tag, and wore an apron. However, some crazies or angry people have done unusual outbursts to make Jerry Springer Live come true. I have started my volunteer relationship.
Position #37 - Caviar Hannah and Caviar DC team has their hands full trying to service DC and Virginia. Everytime, it comes around to deliver for Caviar/Square, the weather just would not act right and I saw my schedule reliability rating went from 95% to 38%. I kept wondering why I was not getting much orders. The experience has been crazy. If you attempt to deliver while it is raining/storming on a bike, they will give you an address that do not exist. Also, they attempt to send you to pizza places that have enormous boxes you cannot fit anywhere.
Position #38 - Americorps/ByteBack This is my first experience with a nonprofit. The Americorps organization was formed by President Clinton and additionally funded by President Obama. I like the commitment to community service and its initiatives, but it is a full time job to make the hours for a little bit of money and no benefits (benefits are offered through public services). I was glad to run into the FEMA Americorps team at the Capital Area Food Bank community event. Also, picture attached. ByteBack offers classes to adult learners. The experience has been unique from 10 attendees dwindled down to 2 attendees. Or holding at 7 attendees and showing up once or twice a week missing some material, etc. Byteback crew is great. I look forward to the new move from NE Brookland to NE NoMa.
Position #39 - UberEats This team I was able to discuss over the phone and online only. International calls were something very different. To join this organization, they made sure you get the rough patch. I remember delivering a cupcake from dupont circle all the way to glover park area. The hills were a killer. I remember one confrontation with Uber to get me to cross the bridge to Anacostia. Another confrontation with Uber was at 10:45 PM, a customer had a work address in, but discovered she wanted the food delivered Alexandria, VA on a bike. Uber needs to address if they want deliveries like that please offer Uber cabs/taxis to get the UberEats driver there and back to DC. Uber very interestingly tries to emulate the others, but I still can not believe how many trips I did for this company. I did cover all four quadrants (NE, NW, SE, and SW) with this company. George Washington University and Georgetown University seem to use this service quite a bit. You have to get creative delivering McDonald's. This is the only delivery company that said Happy Birthday to me. When you join UberEats, just give them my invite code ManleyC23UE. Just like the intelligence or Microsoft community called me ‘SharePoint’, the Washington, DC market and community are starting to call me ‘Uber’ or ‘UberEats’.
Position #40 - Grubhub This team with Patrick, and others, give a very unique experience. Something always happened to my bike when working or going to work for this company. It is very interesting the three (3) or four (4) California companies do not talk about you. Seeing the large signage on Douglas Development HQ in downtown Dc was nice, but with the new system of merging WhenIWork and Grubhub app terminate all the drivers who may have changed their schedules or miss a block. I chatted with Jordan Oates about this and he was able to reactivate the account. You surprised me and gave me a Virginia trip, but when I am not on GPS, I took WMATA/metro and made the delivery. When you join Grubhub, just give them my name as a referral.
Position #41 - Postmates Neil and this crew is hilarious. Postmates try to deliver everything. Soft drinks and ice cream, etc., and the driver has to be creative to deliver Wendy's. This was my first company delivering soft drinks. During some trips, I had to substitute the drink for bottled water because I did not know how to do fountain drinks. One morning, I remember delivering two packs of paper from one office to next door office on the same block. Howard University and NorthEast DC uses this service a lot. Postmates did send me a warning of my 5 star rating to dropping below 4.7 star rating....slight suspicion or paranoia is the minorities seeing me a whole lot. Using the PEX card is nice feeling in knowing there are commercial prepaid card. I even got a personalize PEX card right around my birthday. The only annoyance is getting/photoing the receipts into the system/app. When you join Postmates, just give them my name as a referral.
Position #42 - DoorDash This is a very creative service for flat rate, but short trips. Posting a time when the order is delivered gives the driver a huge break and not have to rush to customer regardless if they say ASAP (as soon as possible). The RedCard is a great experience and do not have to photo the receipt into the system. I love the personalized texts. The only downside is one trip per hour. When you join DoorDash, just give them my name as a referral.
Position #43 - Metropolitan Police Department Guess what?! MPD disqualified me based on an old psychologist (about 73 years old) opinion. I took the new written test (100% reading, 81.67% writing, and 56.52% video test). I did send an appeal to the deputy director and director. The video test I guess for every option that says shoot with deadly force I guess I should have picked that option instead of providing customer service.
Position #44 - United States Capitol Police Since MPD disqualified me and I failed the video test, I moved on to United States Capitol Police. I applied here before years ago via paper application. Let's see what happens. If I fail here, most likely I will continue to go through all the law enforcement and fire agencies.
Position #45 - United States Air Force Since MPD disqualified me and I failed the video test, I decided to accept Alabama as one of the possible states to go to for training. In 1999-2000, I wanted to apply and had the application when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2017, let's see what happens as I apply for every branch of the military, including reserve forces.
Position #46 - DC Government Just keeping me D*MN busy with CPR, AED, First Aid, Emergency Preparedness training and whatever else on SERVE DC as a volunteer. Mayoral campaign, I started visiting the ANCs. Every ANC so far has been different from zero (0) minutes (no meeting) to four (4) hours.

Exploring Penang: Southeast Asia’s Melting Pot
So, while I’m still catching up on my ridiculously delayed 2016 travel recaps, I just can’t wait to start sharing my big trip (thus far) of 2017. So I’ll be jumping back and forth a bit again. Apologies for any confusion, my friends!
Penang, Malaysia. Not only is it one of Southeast Asia’s most historically interesting, artistically relevant and food obsessed cities, it’s also one of the most commonly visited by expats in Southern Thailand for various visa services. Which makes it just about crazy that it took me until this year to finally take a proper trip there. It was, in true form, for all the cliché reasons — to tag along on Ian’s trip to process his Thai work permit, to eat, and to check out the capital’s infamous street art scene.
The last time I was in Malaysia in 2009 I was so broke I stayed in hostels that legitimately could have been used as the sets for horror movies and was so painfully picky of an eater that I very likely could have starved… and so I was looking forward to this being a very different kind of trip.
As soon as we landed in Georgetown I felt obscenely grateful for three small luxuries. One, a direct flight from Bangkok. Two, the most affordable Uber rates I’ve encountered anywhere in the world. Three, the fact that we’d booked a modern Airbnb with an absolute luxury of space after a chaotic four day festival. I’d looked at a few centrally-located hotels that made my heart skip a beat, but in the end we couldn’t resist using a chunk of my Airbnb credit instead. (Want $30 off your first booking? Click here!)
Penang is a food mecca and so we didn’t have many plans to use the kitchen; that said, we did an obscene amount of laundry — festival dust happens — and watched an entire HBO miniseries from the couch, so I’d say we absolutely made the right move renting an apartment over staying in a hotel.
We’d been a bit concerned about not staying right in the hub of Georgetown, but in the end we were only about a twelve minute Uber, and the rates were insanely cheap. I should probably apologize in advance for how often I’m going to rave about the price of Uber in Penang, but let’s just get onboard with that now to make life easier for all of us. Literally, for four days of Ubering around the city, including trips to and from the airport, I paid less than $20USD.
I kind of winced at renting a two bedroom for just two people, but at $84 per night we couldn’t complain. While the shared gym and pool weren’t quite as luxurious as we’d hoped and the bathrooms were a bit of a disappointment, the rest of our unit was beautiful and you simply can’t beat ocean views.
We were so happy camped out in our high rise that we actually barely left for the first two nights, just ducking out briefly to drop off Ian’s work permit paperwork and to dine on deliciously cheap Indian food. It felt so good to just catch up on a bit of work and unwind alone together after a big hectic week of festivaling with friends.
On our third day in Penang, we finally felt prepared to, as we say, “do tourism.” We kicked off our morning heading straight into Georgetown for breakfast at Mugshot Cafe.
Valentine’s Day had been about a week prior and my gift to Ian was researching the Penang eateries I thought he’d love the most and presenting him with homemade coupons for a meal at each. Normally Ian gets me the best gifts ever and I give him the equivalent of a kid’s fingerpainting halfheartedly presented to mom after day care — and Ian usually reacts with the same level of undeserved gratitude — so I kind of knocked this one out of the park and I’m not mad about it.
We literally drooled over our order of bagel sandwiches, homemade mango and walnut yogurt, and coffee for Ian and grape smoothies for me. Can you say died and went to hipster breakfast heaven?
After, we wandered over to Ian’s visa processing agent to see if his paperwork had been approved, which was really just an elaborate ruse to kill time until we could eat more. Georgetown was one of the most photogenic cities I’ve ever seen — in four days we didn’t really do enough to justify more than a one-post word count, but I had so many photos I loved I couldn’t force myself to cut down to much less than a hundred.
While this 113sq mile island has much more to it than it’s capital, tourism is certainly centered around the UNESCO World Heritage Site capital, Georgetown. We had big plans to go hiking in Penang National Park and go to the beach and other hilariously ambitious ideas that got sidetracked as soon as we experienced the joy of sitting on our Airbnb couch, but just wandering the streets of Georgetown turned out to be more than enough to entertain us for a large majority of our four-day stay.
Pretty dang soon it was time for lunch at ChinaHouse, one of Penang’s trendiest galleries-turned-eateries with multiple venues in one building.
Penang is literally filled to the brim with insanely tempting baked goods — a serious departure from almost anywhere in Malaysia’s neighbor to the north, Thailand. As a certified sugar addict I couldn’t resist the chance to gorge myself on baked goods that didn’t taste like cardboard, and rather than fight the dessert-loving seven-year-old inside of me, I just went full childhood fantasy and ordered cake for lunch. How do you say “why not?” in Bahasa Malaysia?
ChinaHouse lets you order half slices, which meant I got to try two — passionfruit coconut butter and pear ginger. Both were out of this world. (Ian ordered normal lunch food like an adult, in case you were wondering if there was anyone chaperoning.)
After lunch, we hopped in an Uber to explore two of Penang’s most well-loved tourist sites, Kek Lok Si temples and Penang Hill. First up was Kek Lok Si, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and a cornerstone of the Chinese Buddhist community in Penang.
Our driver dropped us at the very top of the multi-level temple, and we strolled around before taking a cable car down to Ban Po Thar Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda, which Lonely Planet Penang described at “Burmese at the top, Chinese at the bottom and Thai in between,” an apt metaphor for the multi-cultural melting pot that is Penang.
After eight years of traveling through Southeast Asia, I consider myself pretty tough to impress when it comes to temples. This one, however, was a jaw-dropper. It really doesn’t matter where you’ve been or what you think you’ve seen — you need to come to Kek Lok Si.
We were lucky enough to have our visit coincide with a service, so our silent wanderings around the grounds of the temple were soundtracked by a chorus of hundreds of Buddhists singing, chanting, and ringing bells. Combined with the fact that we had the place more or less to ourselves right before closing, it was magical. Best of all? Admission and cable car combined for both of us cost $2.25.
While it was hard to imagine that the views could get much better than the ones from Kek Lok Si, we were in the area anyway, and so we took a quick Uber over to Penang Hill. Used as a retreat from the heat during the British colonial period, today the hill is still a top destination for escaping the sticky humidity at sea level — it’s almost always a full ten degrees cooler at the summit. We paid about $10US for one standard adult ticket and one student ticket (looking like I’m still 18 is annoying when getting carded in bars, but fabulous when offered student discounts.)
There in the refreshing air nearly 2,700 feet above George Town, we found amazing views across the island and over to the mainland — we even spotted the high-rise apartment our Airbnb was in, teeny tiny in the distance! Also at the summit was a fancy British restaurant, some gardens and displays and your standard kitschy tourist trappings, but the real attraction here aside from the views is the funicular ride itself! It was so fast and steep it almost felt like a thrill ride at an amusement park. It was a brief but brilliant way to end our day Penang.
Stay tuned for Part II!
