Mr. Unlucky in which luck is a metaphor for being queer and the way different people handle being different and also how different people seek acceptance or don't and how everyone grows when they find the people they belong with and the way Kouta is the person who always covered up who he really was beneath a mask of normalcy while Naoya was always known to be different and was used for those difference for other people's gains and once they found each other neither one had the same issues, not the bad luck nor the good luck, not the mask nor the use, they found each other and their friends and their love and now they're both just themselves.

As the second entry from KADOKAWA's "TUNKU" project that is specialized in BL (Boys' Love) drama series following the ongoing drama adaptation of Gamoko Tsuyu's Fukoukun wa Kiss Surushikanai! (Mr. Unhappy has no choice but to kiss!), Senpai, Danjite Koi Deha! will start airing on MBS' midnight drama slot "Drama Shower" on June 16, 2022.
The original manga was serialized on KADOKAWA's BL manga website Comic Fleur in January 2019, then its sequel Senpai, Danjite Koi Deha! Brush up followed in September 2020. The story follows Yanase, an experienced CG designer, has been assigned as a trainer for newcomer Kaneda. But he has been unable to get close to Kaneda. Yanase understands Kaneda is a hard worker, but he never breaks facial expressions, and even when he tries a little physical contact with Kaneda, he is rejected, "I'd prefer you not to touch me." While Yanase is depressed, Kaneda, on the other hand, does not know what do with Yanase. In fact, Kaneda respects Yanase to the point of worshipping him as a "god"...!
26-year-old Shuichiro Naito (Touma Kamiyama/Kamen Rider Saber in Kamen Rider Saber) is cast as Yanase, while 26-year-old Toshiki Seto (Hiiro Kagami/Kamen Rider Brave in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid) plays Kaneda. The two actors, who have both appeared in the Kamen Rider series, will co-star in the drama.
"Senpai, Danjite Koidewa!" and "Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! Brush up" manga tankobon covers:

It's the way Shinoyama stares at Fukuhara from the very first moment he spotted him and the way he's instantly smitten and doesn't hesitate to accept being asked out because he is lucky and this is the luckiest thing he could do. Both for himself and for Fukuhara.
But this moment was the one that made me so eager for this show. Even before meeting up with him, even before exchanging a word in the show, the luckiest man on campus is already smitten with this unlucky young man. Because he's lucky. Because his luck knows exactly what he needs to be the best self he can be.
Honestly, this is just darling. Fukuhara is terrified of anyone knowing he's unlucky and Shinoyama is truly lucky and that luck has drawn him to the one person who needs him.

I love the idea that luck is what draws Shinoyama to Fukuhara. It's his luck that says 'go for that man, look at him, speak to him, accept him, tell him he rescued you, save him from himself' and it's just so good because it means that while Fukuhara is drawn to him to take advantage of his luck, Shinoyama is drawn to Fukuhara because of what he sees that no one else does.
Shinoyama sees that Fukuhara likes beer and that his smile lights up the world and the way he panics at everything and he went 'yes. yes, this is the man that I like and the man I could love and someone I want to be with all the time' and he's going to show that to Fukuhara and, together, they're going to figure out who Fukuhara really is.
Fukuhara is in for quite a journey.

Watching Fukuhara going home after the love confession, thinking on that idea that he doesn't want to force Shinomiya to spend time with him, thinking that he'd want to be on his own... and then getting the texts. Seeing that he's wanted and that he's being loved and realizing that he doesn't have to run and to hide himself and the way he rushes there without ever stopping and through all his bad luck and then, and then, he can laugh about it.
He can laugh as himself. He can laugh because Shinomiya understands and he can laugh because he understands and he is wanted and he's never been wanted, he's never been supported, he's lived a life on the sidelines and in fear and changed himself entirely to be someone else to try and stop the shame he felt for his bad luck.
It's so beautiful and such a huge leap and I'm so proud of him for both his confession and his run and his laughter.

Kouta getting adopted into Naoya's friendship group and taking the chance to actually be himself with them and to be himself with the people around him and not just be the mask he'd put together, not just the carefully crafted public image he'd kept for so long... it's so good. Kouta is learning to be himself for the first time since he was a child, to be himself and to accept himself and love himself and if that isn't such a huge part of the queer journey, to accept who you are despite the world telling you otherwise, despite the rejection of people around you. Kouta has shaped himself to be better accepted by society and is not, with Naoya's love, shaping himself back into himself.

Also, I absolutely called it, Shinoyima was in love with Fukuhara from before he ever knew who he was and he's been watching him. He saw the fake smile and he saw the way he tries to be positive and he saw a reflection of himself, a distorted and shifted reflection but a beloved reflection.
Shinomiya fell in love a long time ago, both with the mask and the man behind it, because he's spent his own life behind his own mask.
Fukuhara made a perky, joyful mask to cover up his own fears and his own pain and his own imperfections.
Shinomiya made a mask of other's happiness to cover up his own insecurities and worries and to make them joyful.
They both made a mask to help others and they both hide behind the mask to face the world with a smile, with happiness, with what the world expects of them.
Shinomiya took a chance to take his mask off with Fukuhara on the chance that he'd take his mask off as well... and now that he has that, he doesn't want to risk losing him again.
But Fukuhara is still clinging to his mask, to the fears that come with removing his mask, to the worries that he's taking advantage of and using Shinomiya with his love. He still can't believe that his love is real because he benefits from it, because that love is good and Fukuhara doesn't get nice things.

The way Kouta is trapped in a life or death situation and can only think about how much he loves Naoya, how much he wants to be with him again, how much he misses him, how much he is cared for... and that he tells him. He tells Naoya about that because he's learned that trusting him is worthwhile and because he loves him and he is loved in return and he can be himself and he can be happy as himself and accept himself and love himself as he really is, as the person he is and not just the cover story he's crafted his entire life. And he accepts his bad luck, he accepts all parts of himself, and in that moment he is finally himself. And he gives Naoya his real smile, his real voice, his real self.

There is so much power in that moment when Fukuhara starts complaining about his day. Think about how many times we've seen him deny anything bothering him, seen him so quick to say everything is fine, how every time he says the opposite of what he's thinking... but next to Shinoyama? Bumping shoulders with him? He's complaining, he's bemoaning, he's whining, he's groaning about how everything went wrong. He's being honest, not just about what happened but about how he feels. For the first time in a very long time... he's just being himself.

Naoya just dove headfirst into love and Kouta is still standing on the edge, staring into the relationship with fear and love and worries and insecurities abound.
Naoya just wants to love and be loved and to have time with his boyfriend, to share a thousand soft stares, to do the one thing he wants to do for the first time, to make his own choices and to see that smile.
Koutais still struggling to accept that he wants any of this, let alone that he loves Naoya, let alone how much he loves him or what he wants from this relationship.
Kouta has spent most of his life subsuming his own desire behind a facade to try not to bother people and is only slowly accepting that he can love and be loved and the he can desire and be desired and that he can want and be wanted.
And he has no idea that Naoya has been doing the same thing for just as long but in a different way, under different circumstances, for different reasons and with different results.

Kouta has been slowly but surely falling in love with Naoya this whole time and it took seeing someone else trying to exploit him for those feelings to finally overwhelm him alongside disgust for himself and that's even harder to overcome because Kouta is an expert as hating himself and finding disgust in himself and now he's found a real reason to do that.

Kota is working so hard not 'give in to' Naoya's games that he doesn't realize he's just being himself around him because he hasn't just been himself in so long he's forgotten what it means and what it feels like to just be him and it's both beautiful and sad because it's beautiful to see him relaxing and so sad to realize he's hasn't allowed himself this in so long.

Mr Unlucky Has No Choice But To Kiss!
@absolutebl Yeah, it definitely has Kieta Hatsukoi vibes and feels very much like a comedy, cutesy BL but, hey, I'm not complaining. More Japanese BL! And on Gaga! Absolutely thrilled. Japanese BL just hits differently.
