Project 1: The Instrument

Exercise 1.1:  The Instrument

I’m currently feeling that I have missed the point of this exercise. The camera manual reads, “...histograms are intended as a guide only and may differ from those displayed in imaging applications...” 

Are learners supposed to take photographs of the backs of their cameras? Using the nearest camera available to hand (my iPhone), I wasn’t able to see any marked differences. Also, what histogram information does the exercise require; RGB or highlights? The handbook gives a general guide: if the image is dark, tone distribution will be shifted to the left and to the right if the image is bright.  Also, what if I am using film?  

Exercise 1.2:  Point

This image appears to be divided into quarters from the bottom up.  I am 5ft 3 inches tall – a taller person’s viewpoint would be different.  The camera creates a point towards the top of the frame on the left hand side. The ‘Hilton London Syon Park’ sign points to its mast.

There is more than one visible point to the next image; the ball in the foreground on the left, the patch of blue on the sign on the wall to the right and the yellow bollard in the far middle distance through the gate, which is open.

Here there are three horizontal sections.  The front door of the house, situated to the right in the frame, could be seen as a point. The drive also leads to the tree, past the white building in the middle of the photograph.

The green breaks up the similar tones in the paving, driveway, house and sky.  There are no shadows.

I have found it difficult to evaluate my images according to these rules.  I did not consider the fact that the example images in the course materials are in black and white until writing this learning log.  The colours are part of the composition.

Without the narrative around the example image in the course materials, I don’t think I would know what the focal point of it is. The cup draws attention to the space under the chair. What is the thing to the right of the image under the door? Is the corner of the door a point? What is meant by ‘tension’?  Emotional?

When taking this photograph I was aware of the reflector on the fence.  I had intended to make this a point within the frame, with the fence directing attention to the open gate.  Is the tree in the background a point or a distraction?.  The position of the camera is not 180 degrees horizontal. It could be argued there is too much empty space to the right.  However, it could be seen as two images intentionally spliced together.  A join is detectable between the fence and gateway on the left of the frame and the larger grass section, which follows the rule of thirds.

Exercise 1.4:  Frame

The camera I used was a full spectrum converted Fuji X-E1 with Fujinon XF 14mm f/2.8 lens and B+W 830 IR filter, testing all for the first time.  I used Photoshop to auto-adjust the colour when reviewing the photographs.

I did not use a grid to compose these photographs.  When composing ‘A stunning/smile’, I took several photographs because I wanted to include the mirror and various parts of the text.  I was not aware of the tree in the background until reviewing the images.

The odd cloud formation was another part of the frame I wanted to include.  I placed it centrally; I was aware of the trees and buildings when composing the photograph.

My composite grid differs from the example in the course materials in that I have included a photograph with portrait orientation, and only one colour photograph.  I have included the colour image to draw attention to the subject.

Lenses used: Fujinon XF 14mm f/2.8, 23mm f/2, 35mm f/2 and 56mm f1.2 mostly stopped down to f/11 to f/16 (no ND at hand - sorry).

ProRes files are straight out of the camera (or the Odyssey 7Q+ I should say). This short demo video was quickly graded in DaVinci Resolve 12.5 and thrown together in Adobe Premiere CC.

* please keep in mind although the Odyssey records a 10-bit signal the camera only delivers an 8-bit signal over HDMI

Ormai è noto, amo avere il pieno controllo dei miei scatti, amo lo smooth della ghiera di messa a fuoco, amo il click della ghiera dei diaframmi… insomma amo scattare senza automatismi e adoro le ottiche meccaniche.

La mia ottica preferita fino a ieri? Il Fujinon XF-14mm f.2.8. In modalità manuale il 14mm Fujinon presenta una scala delle distanza stampata sul barilotto, ideale per un settaggio in iperfocale, non distorce e non ha perdita di nitidezza ai bordi, insomma una bella ottica…ma…

Il mio modo di fotografare è sempre in evoluzione, mi accorgo che tendo ad essere molto rapido nello scatto e,  per forza di causa maggiore, sono obbligato a prevedere la scena e ad impostare la mia fotocamera molto prima, al fine di  trovarmi pronto al momento dello scatto. Come mostrato in un video di qualche articolo fa,  il micro lag delle lamelle del diaframma degli obiettivi fujinon ha iniziato a divenire per me un fenomeno veramente snervante (specie nello scatto ripetuto); così tanto che ho deciso di non utilizzare più tali lenti per la street photography :-( – almeno per il mio modo di fotografare!

Dunque? 

Leica….si certo…magari…ma troppo costosa! diciamolo, non è che acquistare un obiettivo Leica sia una passeggiata. E’ vero sono meccanicamente perfetti, sono ineccepibili nella costruzione ottica, insomma sono la perfezione assoluta in ambito ottico e meccanico e per questo sono inesorabilmente obiettivi per tutta la vita. Ma ovviamente all’atto pratico 2500 euro per un’ottica,  è una spesa un po’ impegnativa da sostenere, specie per chi come me affronta la fotografia come esperienza artistica e di ricerca e crescita personale, piuttosto che come fonte di sostegno economico (per fortuna con la fotografia non devo camparci!)

Quindi ho pensato:  “e adesso dove ripiego? Dove mi rivolgo per avere un mood simile con una qualità ottica accettabile ed un costo sostenibile?”

The Voigtländer

Da sempre sono stato affascinato da questa casa,  fondata nel 1756 da Johann Christoph Voigtländer a Vienna, questa azienda si dedicò fin da subito alla creazione di ottiche scientifiche e strumenti ottici di alta precisione. Poi, intorno alla metà dell’800 fu folgorata dalla fotografia e inizio a costruire obiettivi  di alta precisione e di alta qualità trasformandosi nella Voigtländer & Sohn.

Alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale la Voigtländer era leader del mercato europeo e mondiale nella vendita di macchine fotografiche e ottiche dall’eccellente rapporto qualità prezzo; Voigtländer stava rendendo la fotografia accessibile a tutti con mezzi di degna fattura, capaci di offrire risultati eccellenti.

Nel 56′ fu comprata dalla Carl Zeiss Foundation per poi passare negli anni 80 alla Rollei… e poi… arrivò l’attuale gruppo tedesco.

Insomma questa grande casa, tra alti e bassi ha superato guerre, crisi finanziarie e una concorrenza sempre più spietata, riuscendo a mantenere vivo l’interesse di quella nicchia di mercato sempre attenta ad una qualità costruttiva basata su un’esperienza di tutto rispetto. Tra ricerca e sviluppo tecnologico la Voigtländer è stata sempre in grado di mantenersi in linea con i tempi caratterizzando la fotografia del diciannovesimo e ventesimo secolo; insomma un Marchio con una storia e una sempre viva passione per la creazione di ottiche fotografiche degne di questo nome!

La Riflessione

Come normale evoluzione, alla mia xpro-2 sicuramente a breve affiancherò una Leica… ma non di quelle digitali, semplicemente una M6 rigorosamente non TTL, completamente meccanica, capace di funzionare anche dopo un disastro nucleare in assoluta mancanza di energia! Dunque se la mia “confort zone” si trova tra i 21mm e i 35mm (reali) ho pensato di comprare una lente, attacco Leica M, utilizzabile anche con la xpro-2 senza sacrificare troppo la mia visione.

Eureka! Ecco il Color Skopar 21 mm/F4,0 P VM.

Una lente che su x-pro2 diventa un  31,5mm e che se montata su M6 mi offre la pienezza della mia confort zone! Decido inizialmente di acquistarla presso un rivenditore “low cost” in Inghilterra… be’ capisco la Brexit, capisco che i cargo da Honk Kong sono sempre un po’ lenti, ma, dopo 4 mesi di inutile attesa, decido di richiedere un rimborso e rivolgermi ad un altro rivenditore… dunque inizia nuovamente la mia ricerca!

Arrrrgh! Arrrrgh! Arrrrgh! 

Ho cercato in tutti gli shop online noti e meno noti, ma di quest’ottica neanche l’ombra, tutto “non disponibile”!  Ho ricercato su e-bay e nel mercato dell’usato… sempre con spedizione da Honk Kong e qualcosa in Usa…  possibile mai che nessuno vendesse quest’ottica in Italia? Ed ecco che alla fine trovo il sito fotoimport.it, sembra essere l’importatore ufficiale in Italia di Voigtländer… perfetto! Decido di ordinare subito!

Che dire, l’indomani mi chiama il Sig. Giorgio Bazzero, che, con una ormai rara gentilezza, mi avverte che l’ottica ordinata era stata già venduta e che aspettava la nuova fornitura direttamente dalla Fabbrica in Germania scusandosi di quei pochi giorni di ritardo, mi spiega anche le differenze nelle linee di produzione delle fabbriche tedesche rispetto a quelle di Honk Kong e mi da ulteriori ragguagli sulla bellissima fattura di queste ottiche! 

ARRIVATA!

Be’ che dire… un’ottica piccola… molto piccola, un pancake con ghiere dallo scatto perfetto, diaframmi meccanici, full metal, una ghiera di messa a fuoco morbida e con la giusta frizione, ogni particolare curato nel dettaglio. Si avverte subito a vederla tutta la storia di un grande marchio che spero mi dia grandi soddisfazioni fotografiche. Monto il mio adattarore per L-Fuji (di questo vi racconterò in seguito) e scendo in strada a scattare! WOW già L’adoro!
