I grew up walking in the woods on pine needle laden game trails and atv routes, and over palmetto lined marshes. When in my 20’s I got into recreating on public lands, I reconnected to my roots in some fundemental ways, I suppose. It came naturally. The more miles I walked, the more I helplessly saw the planet for what it was, what it is, and what it could be again. Public lands are precious. Private lands are too. My love affair with the natural world has radically shaped and changed the way I move through our anthropogenic one, from the way I care for my domestic pets in order to protect wildlife, to carrying a trash bag so that I can pick up trash on trails, roadsides, etc. To driving slower, to donating to local wildlife programs in my state. Recreating on public lands reminds me how much we have to gain by reconnecting with our planet, and how much we have to lose when we behave in ways that cause damage. Gaia is a great teacher, and worth all effort to protect from human greed and ego. It’s impossible to live a life on this earth entirely flawless, and without leaving a carbon footprint. But those little things we do, and those attitudes we hold daily, can have significant effects on the world around us. We are connected to the planet and all wild beings even still. Next week I’ll be finally sharing some work I shot on a 50 mile solo trek out west. Thanks to Hyperlite Mountain gear’s camera pod, I was able to tote my Fuji TX1 safely and comfortably on my adventure. Stay tuned!

366 Decisions
Well, not literally 366 decisions. Rather I am struggling with deciding what image to use for today’s 366 picture-a-day Challenge. It’s only 9am but I went out almost two hours ago for a pre-breakfast wander. I had the Fujifilm X100T with me and also the filter system I wrote about recently. It’s so small and light it made sense to pop it in my pocket “just in case”. All images: Fuji X100T | ND…

Palousean Greens by Zeb Andrews Via Flickr: The Palouse is one of those areas where there really is no bad time to visit. Granted, I generally travel out there in the spring, but I have passed through it during summer and fall as well and seen some amazing photos of it in winter. Spring is its most popular time of year because the fertile landscape blooms in the greens of crops growing. Personally spring is my favorite for the weather, which unlike the gentle, almost rhythmic, undulation of the landscape can sweep through dramatically. We had bright sun, then puffy white clouds, then beautiful overcast skies and then hail and dark, brooding storm clouds. We could stand there and watch the patches of light sail across the landscape, highlight one hill after another. And if the light wasn't just right, we simply waited and watched and it would eventually come back as the sun flitted from one cloud break to another. It was quite lovely, if more than a bit breezy. I took along a few cameras on this trip; loaded down a bit heavier than usual as it was going to be less about on-foot travel and more about in-car travel. So I had my Hasselblad (of course), the Fuji G617 (which is responsible for this image), a Reality So Subtle 6x12, a Zero Image 6x6, a Reality So Subtle 6x6 (because one pinhole was loaded with color and the other with B&W) and then my Olympus XA. I actually used all the cameras pretty equally, but so far I have only seen images from the Fuji G617. I had a roll of Fuji 160C in 220 tucked away in the fridge and that came along. 220 is a great format for the Fuji and the greens of 160C are a great match for the Palouse. The stars aligned. I'm not the world's greatest at social media. It feels that I can be a bit of a fish swimming in a different direction than the proverbial school sometimes too. I’m a photographer, never a content creator. I make photographs, not content. I’m a creative person, not “a creative”. Modern wordage saying things we’ve said before? Maybe, maybe not. I just don’t relate. Maybe I’m a fuddy-duddy at 33 for feeling this way; maybe I’m protecting my personal sense integrity where I can. My hope is always to print my work (books or prints) and have it seen in such a way. I’ve been so fortunate this year to do be apart of two gallery shows, both at Cedarhurt in Mt Vernon Illinois and The Frist here in Nashville. Right now I’m toying with a few major project concepts. Been busy making a few album covers, doing some commercial work, and wrapping up a series I shot in Scotland when I have time. It’s hard to believe we are well into September, but it’s been a great year with lots of great people and projects. I’m just trying to make honest work, study photography I love, stay positive, and be a good person to the people in my life. My thoughts are don’t let social media or capitalist mentalities consume you, get off your phone, make plans to immerse yourself in time with people, the planet, experiences, and so on. That phone in your hand, that toxic email, those situations or people that made you feel unwell, don’t let these things absorb you. Look for the deep stuff in life and suck the ever living marrow out of it - adventures are not only photoshoots and thru hikes, but so are coffee dates with friends and smelling the flowers in your garden. You won’t get any of this time you are given back - make your days magic, my friends. Tha beatha àlainn! Taken at the end of a 156 mile walk across Scotland | Loch Ness | May 2023 | After this portrait, I walked Eastbound a few more miles and found a pub and an inn. Apparently, this 18th century inn hosted many including Charlie Chaplin quite a few times. Anyways, I bought myself a room, veggie curry, and a few pints. Ended up sitting with a group of older ladies from Northern England and getting a little tipsy with them. That night I fell asleep stuffing my face with Walkers Shortbread biscuits in bed. The next day I caught a bus to Inverness, and then a train back to Glasgow, the place where I began my walk.

The Magic Dozen
My long-term project pairing Fomapan 100 with Pyrocat-HD reached a milestone recently so I thought it would be a good time to provide an update. Incidentally, following on from my previous post all of the images used here have been re-digitised specifically for this post. Chroma 617 – one from the first roll of the project. Chroma 617 – roll two The milestone? A dozen rolls of Fomapan 100 have…

JAPAN TRIP - DAYS 22-25
The past 4 days have been relatively calm, aside from the discomfort I experienced following the cervical conization. Fortunately, most of the pain has subsided now. Due to the need for ample rest after the procedure, my partner kindly rearranged our plans, and we ended up staying in Tokyo for the past days, taking leisurely strolls through the streets.
I had the opportunity to visit Shibuya Sky (渋谷スカイ) and marvel at the breathtaking panoramic view of the city. We also had the chance to explore Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社 九段北). I had the privilege of visiting the Asakusa Mameshiba Café (浅草の豆柴カフェ) as well 🐶 I have fallen deeply in love with Tokyo - the captivating sights, enchanting locations, and the warm-hearted people have stolen my heart ❤️
Next stop: Mount Fuji (富士山)!
