Felt like watching Don Giovanni tonight, and decided to go with the 1987 Vienna, because I thought I must have seen it, but I wasn't remembering it. And now I'm seeing why it was so forgettable. It really takes a special conductor and dull ass production to manage to make a Ramey/Furlanetto Donny G this damned boring.

I've obsessed over the 4th movement of Bruckner's 8th Symphony for at least a month now...it's just absolutely fucking bonkers good. Off the charts good. Especially the recapitulation I've queued it up to (1:13:13)...this is about as high quality of music as humanity is capable of making, from the score to the execution of the individual musicians to the control of the conductor. The horns in particular, are fucking BREATHTAKINGLY good.

Bruckner himself is an...interesting...weird...brilliant...figure.

This guy might be the patron saint of incels, proposing to numerous teenage girls throughout the middle of Europe, repeatedly getting turned down, and his reputation getting damaged along the way. In the top vid, the section at 3 minutes goes into this along with his other OCD/manic depressive traits...his lack of romantic "success" driving him into a spiral of depression that required visits to an asylum until he died alone.

Historians are fairly agreed that this wasn't pedophilia, rather a gross distorted interpretation of the Bible...but he was still a really strange guy who made a lot of people around him uncomfortable. If the religious/virginal stuff wasn't weird enough, he had a bizarre open fascination with dead people. Despite all that (an admittedly generous use of "despite all that"), his musical abilities and career were the stuff of legend. In a lot of ways, there was a clear bifurcation between his personal and musical lives.

He was the organ virtuoso of his time, a star musician that was known around Europe for his improvisational ability. His educational prowess was so remarkable at such a young age, when he auditioned for the prestigious Vienna Conservatory his auditors remarked that he should be teaching them. He was a close peer of Wagner, Franz Liszt and a teacher of Gustav Mahler...the personal depression he experienced is easy to say was absolutely in no way a result of his musical career.

There's this idea that classical music is a world solely for prodigies. The best composers and conductors are thought to be prodigies who "done right" and stayed on the track their entire lives. In a lot of cases this is absolutely true...this shit requires time, seasoning and marinating.

Bruckner was a different cat though. He didn't start composing until he was 37 years old, rehashing ideas from his organ improvisations, and yet his symphonic legacy is so monumental yet simultaneously underrated, it's remarkable.

If Beethoven is the symphonic world's Mount Everest, a lot of that is due to the catalog's accessibility. Symphonies are typically clocking in under an hour and the music itself, while densely layered and arranged, is not overwhelming. Bruckner isn't K2...I'd call Wagner K2...he's something more dangerous, he's Nanga Prabat.

The Bruckner cycle (all his symphonies) is as brutal as it gets. This is a big turn off for a lot of people, but for masochistic musicians, it's as good as it gets. Symphonies packed with 40-minute movements that have as much concentrated theoretical greatness as humanly possible.

What made Herbert von Karajan great isn't that he did Beethoven cycles...every conductor does that. It's not that he did the Bruckner cycles either...something that many don't even dare. It's the level of which he got his orchestras to perform these works, at such a sustained level, that makes them so brilliant.

Karajan's Bruckner cycles are the stuff of legend as much as the composer. The first great one coming in the mid-70's with the Berlin Philharmonic...this is raw and aggressive. The second great one is linked above, one of his last concerts ever and at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic. This concert was one of those special minor events in musical history...a performance so good, the stoic Karajan was beaming afterwards going to each musician, excitedly asking "can you believe we did that?!"

To sum it up, Bruckner's music is tough. Brutal. His history is checkered and uncomfortable to read. But at the end of all that, the peaks and power and perfection that comes off that page is something truly special.
