okay hello hi here to shout again because I have ROTATING the hunger lore for DAYS

ECOSYSTEMSSSSS!!! LETS GOOOO!!! did I do well in biology? No!!! I did not :D but ecosystems I know bby!!! MOONS AND STARS ABOVE I love the way it's all connected to like this huge ecosystem and the Watchers being almost gone, the Seekers being completely gone, and rhe Listeners relatively new!! Like?? That's so extremely clever and fascinating to me, and I love the way things are out of balance now bc!!! Yea!!! That's how ecosystems be!!

And also!!! It opens all these new thoughts!!! Like, I can't remember exactly if you said WHY the Watchers decided to take Grian, but if you didn't then like!!!! It opens up these possibilities of the Watchers trying to build back their population, which opens even MORE doors like "are they trying this with other players or was Grian the first/last?" And "would building their population out of Players actually help if Player-Watchers are different?" LIKE IM MEANT TO BE DOING SCHOOLWORK BUT I AM ROTATING

(and also. Love the way Grian became a Watcher. Can't remember if you specified the why (will go back and look) or if you're keeping it secret for now, but!! I love considering the ways populations adapt and survive to great loss and near extinction. It's very different from my own lore (living weapon Grian. Watchers took him to be a soldier bc Watchers and Listeners can't harm each other) so it's so fun to just think about and!!! Yeah!!! That's all I got!!!

AAAAAA thank you so much!!!! :D im really pleased that everyone likes the ecosystem stuff-- ive been kinda noodling on it for a while because ecosystems are just so neat to me and it made a lot of sense to develop one when i decided Watchers were parasitic in this verse!!!!

I think ive only mentioned this offhand once or twice, but youve absolutely nailed the entire reason the Watchers took Grian-- they're trying to rebuild their population. Grian was essentially the beginning of an experiment to see if this was a suitable way to do that!!!

Actually lemme dive into that real fast, because i dont think i actually have before, at least not publicly. Something to note about Watcher life cycles is that they take comparatively a LONG time. Specifically, Watcher larvae take around a year to incubate within their hosts, and then once they "hatch" (altho "emerge" might be a better word for it) the juveniles take far longer to grow up and teach. And because these things are basically made out of wet tissue paper, theyve got a pretty high mortality rate.

So to get around that, and to try and get around the fact that juveniles often die because they dont know how to feed properly yet and often overextend themselves, why not try and copy the memory code of something fully grown and sentient and just... transfer it to a larva, so its easier to teach?? I feel like it kinda highlights the desperation the Watchers are feeling, that they'd go for this kind of wild experimentation, but it did technically work!!!

They just uh. Didnt account for the insane trauma that would cause, because to them Players are typically just viewed as food sources. Very orange and blue morality, in terms of their value systems compared to Players'.

Grian demonstrated to them that while its possible to rebuild this way on a technical level, its not actually feasible socially speaking. Grian ran from them because of the trauma they inflicted, and that sorta defeats the purpose of Watcherificating a Player so they can add to the community's population 💀💀💀💀 so yeah i'd say Grian is probably both the first and last experiment of his kind, if only because its just not reasonable to continue if your new Watchers are going to escape containment and flee to the ends of the universe every single time you make one /lh

Elytrian Lifecycle Concept

First post! Messy elytrian lifecycle concept. Their lifecycle works more like insects than birds. Females tend to lay three eggs at a time. The first one to hatch into a larvae usually eats the others. This is expected and a cultural norm as elytrians tend to have a very warlike and violent culture. They then attach to the elongated feathers of their mother’s chest and grow into a pupa, emerging as an imago. Larvae are not considered to have feelings by the majority, but this is still a controversial topic. This info is subject to change.

It’s a sunny day in the MC main lobby when all of a sudden the ground starts to shake. The sky turns a dark color in what seems to look like a broken rectangle when suddenly the sky box rips in half through the dark square.everyone is either running away or frozen in fear as they see a giant Watch’s head push its way in through the whole. Not of the only servers in the universe that should be safe from the watchers and here one is pushing its way in. The onlookers stare as once the body of the unholy god gets half way though hands start to grab at it. Hundreds of hands dark and dripping grasping at the God all almost looking as if they are pulling it back. The Watcher starts to glow a hash overstated blue color seeming to burn the hands. Screams of pain and anger come from everywhere at once in the sky. Once most of the hands (if they can even be called that) let go the Watcher continues to push and pull its way through the rip. A giant hand digs into the concrete walkways grasping at it. The hands are returning as the last of the forbidden monstrosity pulls its way into the server. Seeming to stand as tall as the build limit, the watcher pulls large needle and thread from some magic fuckery pocket universe and starts to screech a horrible, ear splitting wale as it sees up the rip. The hands trying to rip and pull at the thread. Players can see as another head(?) tries to get through but is pushed back by the Water already outside the hole. The Watcher finishes sewing up the rip leaving a seam in the sky before falling to its knees. The players watch, and hear, in horror as the God starts scratching at its face. Letting out a sound so piercing the players who describe it to their therapist will need to get the therapist and therapist. A scream of pain, sadness, freedom, and heartbreak. They watch as the mask on its wearing it’s ripped from its face, pulling at the skin and make a horrible noise. The air fills with the scent of tainted blood.

   The Watcher breaks the mask. Their form seeming to crumble to the ground. Anyone who dared to stay can hear what sounds to be bones breaking and grinding against each other through the screaming as the God starts to shrink. The clothes it’s wearing changing in shape and color. Once the whole 20 min process is complete all that’s left is….

But, he’s been dead for years. Along with his server. No one surviving the server crashing and deleting itself from the inside out. Yet here he is. Alive and fucking kicking. Sooooo I’m bad at endings but here’s you shitpost of the day

It is absolutely hilarious to me that Ethubs, compared to other popular ships in the fan base, is by far the most NORMAL duo.

Like ok ok, looking @last-lifeduo-standing ‘s page, the most popular ships in this fandom are those with lots of like lore, fantastical elements, or idk in-universe importance or significance that makes them stand out. Does that make sense??

For example- Desert duo. Going off popular fanon interpretations, Desert duo is a pair thats the Watchers’ favorite. They are constantly being toyed with and pulled together. One of them is also a Watcher but has no control over the terrible stuff that happens to him and his friends. And remember! This is all commonly accepted fanon stuff.

Flower husbands consists of a two-time winner of the game who won by disobeying the Watchers’ rules. The other guy got some bird curse and always dies first despite his efforts.

Team Rancher, another very popular pairing kind of is treated with the same approach. It’s got Jimmy with the canary curse and Tango is now commonly headcanoned to have a curse of meaningless death (he’s been lore-ified)

Renchanting too has evo listener Martyn, and Ren who very much leans into role playing. Their character significance is quite obvious

As for Ethubs, I’ve seen next to no posts in this fandom treating them with the same specialness that is fucking hilarious. They are literally just two assholes that won fans over by pure skrunkly scrimbloness. By no means are they normal people! They are not normal they are in fact very very strange people. But in both canon and fanon interpretations they are literally just some guys. Ok Etho has a big reputation as a minecraft legend, but one by one people (Cleo, Joel) are realizing that ok he is just some guy. There is LITERALLY an arc in canon about how much of a guy he is. There is nothing special about these two and there never will be. Sure Ethubs has angst and famous moments, but are they Watchers? Cursed? Winners? No! They are just two guys who want to spend their time playing the game being mentally unwell about each other. And the fandom (me) fucking eats it up every time.

TLDR: all of the popular duos in this fandom have heavy lore elements to them because they consist of winners, or fan-appointed watchers/listeners/cursed people.

And then there’s Ethubs

grian etho evo au where when the server enters different versions of minecraft it sometimes fucks up and connects their world with other worlds and other lps from that specific version. grian is out thousands of blocks looking for clay and he stumbles across a weird little guy living in an ugly oak building with a creeper face on it talking to himself and when he tries to harvest The Clay outside his house the guy starts freaking out and threatening to kill him. its ethoslab at chocolate island who has until this point been convinced that he was in a singleplayer world. etho thinks grian was sent by spaz and grian thinks etho is a trick from the watchers. they both think the other is insane .etc

Okay fuck it here we go it's been one minute. Pack Leader Rex AU time.

First off, it is not an AU where Rex is evil. It's more of a...I guess placement swap? Between VK and Rex. In this AU, VK was found and captured by Providence a year ago to study his nanite absorbing powers, and Rex started befriending and collecting EVO pals until they eventually formed the Pack, and found Abysus to be a place Providence would not enter.

So in this universe, Rex, Bobo (yes unfortunately he's there but he's MY version bc I refuse to look at him in canon), Biowulf, Breach and Skalamander are the original Pack members, people Rex picked up like he picked up the Hong Kong crew before. The fic idea does also start with them picking up Circe - so she remains as someone new to the Pack, trying to figure out her place. The Abysus castle becomes a safe house for all the EVOs they've picked up over the years - an actual community of incurables, with those that they can cure being returned via Breach portal to their families.

That's the general setup - really just, a swap. What makes the AU so exciting for me though is the character dynamic, I'm a sucker for Found Families with Barriers.

First off, Six and Holiday still work for Providence. They both still believe in a cure, and when Providence discovers this EVO that can cure people and is also seemingly amassing an army, they try to get their mitts on him and stop this threat in its track. Six ends up being the first Providence agent to make contact with Rex - and the first agent to realize this is a child they're dealing with, not a monster. Holiday knew this, already - but they have to work on figuring out ways to help out Rex and look out for this kid without jeapordizing their jobs. Six can't abandon White, and Holiday can't abandon Beverly. They're stuck having to earn Rex's trust (granted, not that difficult compared to earning the trust of other Pack members). White is in charge of Providence still (idk how his ass got bleached yet), and instead of blaming Rex for his divorce and seeing the kid as a threat bc of the giant robot bullshit, he sees him as a threat for the potential army bullshit. Ironically he's the one that treats Rex the most like an adult, because he assumes malice from the kid for a long time.

On the flip side, the Pack is very close. They're actually friends, unlike canon. Breach and Rex and Circe hang out a lot, Circe and Rex don't have the initially antagonistic part of their relationship, but Circe still thinks Rex is stupid for trusting people so easily. Breach and Rex just kind of play Minecraft in her pocket dimension sometimes and have talks, and Skalamander,,,,doesn't have a whole lot of stuff to work with in canon so I'm still figuring him out. But Biowulf is the closest thing to a "parent" of the Pack, and he's bad at it. More of an anxious dog that still refers to Rex as Master (as much as Rex hates it, tries to tell him not to), still worships the kid to a degree while Rex is constantly trying to get Biowulf to just. Chill out. Tell him about his worries and talk things out.

There's definitely also an arc in mind where Providence does capture Rex and Holiday and Six have to struggle to protect him the best they can while White tries to bargain with the kid and the Pack freaks out and tries to figure out how to break him out.

Hi I recently found out Watchers are an actual classification of angels from the book of enoch (technically not a part of the canon texts? But that’s dubious) and I just need to share this similarity between the text and the EVO -> Life Series timeline because I’m going insane over this right now

(this is poorly summarized)

Enoch:

Watchers were guardians watching over humanity. They fell in love with humans and took wives, then imparted Forbidden Knowledge (and there’s giants but yk). They get cast down for being tainted/becoming sinful and are made to witness the deaths of 70 generations of their offspring

EVO:

Watchers are guardians watching over the server. They impart wisdom (updates) and eventually take a favorite (obv more pg than original but moving on). After Grian’s taken there’s a switch where the watchers become more insidious, and eventually everyone flees the server. Then the watchers are there for the life series, which is a death loop where they’re continuously watching everyone die

(Hunger au) I'm going into ecology and it's fascinating looking at your au's ecosystem, especially since this doesn't necessarily seem driven by natural selection and instead by just. The universe creating what it needs, with a purpose in mind. That's so different from our world that it's fascinating to think about the implications. Rather than existing to take advantage of and respond to resources and selective pressures, theyre basically creating said resources/pressures. The watchers are having to manually adapt to survive after a bottleneck effect, which to be fair even if there was natural selection they'd probably have to cuz adaptation takes a looong time in species with long reproductive cycles. Do they have a genome? Or are they just being arbiters of mutation themselves (by that i mean theres no genome so theyre changing their species themselves since theres nothing to mutate)? Do offspring inherit traits? What does this mean for natural selection (cuz like. If they survive differently depending on how their traits match up to the environment and selective pressures there is)? With the seekers gone are expected to have a population rebound barring any other selective pressures/fitness independent factors on their population? Their reproductive strategy seemingly aligns with the low pressure they're facing... I read a paper to understand this and it's really cool:

They seem to be an r-selected species and invest a lot in their offspring, but they just naturally have low infant survival rates. This is the sort of species that does not do well in the long run so that adds urgency to their efforts to edit themselves.

All this to say that I'm rotating the concept of an ecological system that has one of ecology's core tenants (evolution) heavily altered/removed. Tis fascinating.

I really did want to go like vastly different from how our world works since this is such a video game setting-- it was really fun to noodle about what a universe made out of code instead of DNA would look like!!! and having the universe be quasi-sentient, affected by a form of evolution itself as well (thank you julien gough for the universe evolution theory that i have wholeheartedly adopted into my worldview).... idk its led to some very interesting worldbuilding for sure 😂😂😂

Watchers-- or any entity in this universe, actually-- dont really have a genome like we'd understand it. Instead, theyre made up of code and code blocks, which i guess would sorta mimic that to a certain degree, but its more tipped in favour of computer programming than biology. The whole au sorta just wholesale marries the two together, along with physics and chemistry (i am currently percolating on how crafting works in this au rn and my current idea involves the concept of the crafting table acting somewhat like a catalyst, which. okay dont take that as gospel yet i havent fully cooked on that one) etc etc etc.

But the Watchers did intentionally change their coding to help defend against the Seekers when they were being hunted into extinction!!! Watchers already had a natural affinity for deep coding, so while it took a lot of effort and caused a lot of damage to themselves, they managed to rapidly change their code structure (aka this universe's version of genetic makeup) to get better at, well. Watching. Seeing the Seekers coming far enough in advance to run before they got there became their primary defense against getting voraciously hunted, and by the end of it the Seekers starved out and went extinct bc they'd gotten so adept at avoiding them.

Offspring is interesting because in my mind at their base level (so genetically/code structurally speaking), Watchers are identical clones of each other. They reproduce asexually-- think uhhh mourning geckos and some species of aphids, which reproduce via parthenogenesis. So yes, in a sense they do inherit traits, but its in a direct line from the parent as a genetic copy. Their memory codes and surface code layers are what differentiate themselves from each other

Reading this chart is so interesting.... i'd say you're right in that Watchers would be considered an r-selected species!! I think if they werent like. Essentially made out of tissue paper thats constantly getting damaged and having to be repaired, they would be able to bounce back to the point of population rebound for sure. The problem with that though is there are only about 40 Watchers left-- thats how bad and out of control the situation got. And since they have such a long reproductive cycle, and such a high infant mortality rate, and their experiment with Grian went so wrong, AND the universe formed Listeners to replace them via direct competition (Watchers cant feed from Listener-infected Players!!), they are unfortunately headed right for extinction too.

Hopefully this makes a modicum of sense and isnt just me totally talking out of my ass wkdnjedjkejdke but i hope this answered most of your questions!!! Im really glad you like the direction ive taken this, its a lot of fun to conceptualize a world that works on different rules than our own :]

Soooooo, the way Minecraft and servers exist in my mindscape is fucking wild and I could make a whole different post about it so just go along with this.

Same with my Grian lore but basically, the Watchers made him, abandoned him for most of his life(YHS), then reclaimed him into their ranks(EVO), and assigned him to watch over a server(Hermitcraft)

Mumbo and Grian have known eachother since they were teenagers, and Mumbo is actually aware that Grian is this weird extraterrestrial divine being thing. Lizzie also knows. That's important.

So my watcher Grian can shift forms right? Like the one he usually takes for Hermitcraft is his usual with parrot wings but he can add parts of his watcher form at will like big, black, glittery wings.

How he uses this ability you may ask? To become a famous singer of course!

Ariana Griande was supposed to just be for promotion yeah, but then people actually started streaming her music, outside of Hermitcraft, and Grian can't just abandon his fans!

So now his person is famous, that's a bit of a stressor.

But then, Joel and Jimmy decide hey.. they should make a band... and you know who they should invite?

Grian.

Who agrees.

Because SURE.

Problem : that band, The Bad Boys, also gets famous.

And people really want Ariana Griande to colab with them.

Shenanigans ensue with Lizzie adding fuel to the fire from the side lines while Mumbo rapidly tries to put it out

a thing i've always loved about c!gem is that she's incredibly willing to blur the lines of reality and characterization, to the point where it's hard to tell what she's taking seriously. she was actively roleplaying as a princess during empires, which is the most obvious example, but she's also very quick to pretend situations straight-up aren't happening – "it's fine" is a common phrase in her vernacular. couple that with the fact that she's new to the life series and isn't familiar with the emotions of the death mechanics, and you've got someone who only knows how to fit into this dramatic world by embodying geminislay to her core.

as such, my interpretation of the gempearl divorce arc is somewhat of a tom and jerry situation: they act like mortal enemies, but neither of them would go so far as to permanently harm the other, and there's a deep-down understanding that it's all a bit in the end. that's why pearl keeps coming back regardless of how much gem pretends to hate her. (i definitely think that c!gem took some of her teasing a bit too far towards the end of the season and it did leave a lasting impact on c!pearl, which makes me desperately long for the gempearl 1v1 battle we could've gotten...)

in this fic specifically, gem and pearl each have some of their own demons to deal with already. gem's anxieties towards pearl in this fic are based on my headcanons for secret life (shameless self promotion here: my queerplatonic gempearl secret life retelling) – specifically, that the watchers possessed her when she opened the end portal and replaced her eye with their own warped visions for her. (this ended up creating fascinating parallels later that i think i may need to go back and expand upon, because pearl what the fuck do you MEAN you forgot about your girlfriend's entire corruption arc.) gem sees pearl's eye go scarlet long before the rest of her body and fully panics under the reasonable assumption that pearl is in danger of becoming Watcher Zombie 2.0, which (spoilers for the aforementioned series) nearly permakilled gem.

as for pearl... though i don't subscribe to the idea that the evo smp was torture from the watchers – i think it was genuinely enjoyable most of the time, right up until the ending – i think there was definitely something off about it. glitches abounded, healing was slow, saturation was never quite right... health wasn't really a guarantee on the server. i don't touch on it in this fic (and in hindsight, maybe i should've), but my headcanon is that c!pearl has a habit of hoarding food/medical supplies on the off-chance she's endangered by a glitch no one will listen to. not knowing which items were safe to eat, and especially nearly dying from it, set her off. so neither gem or pearl is coming at this conversation from a particularly good headspace.

but i really do think they still cared for each other throughout the whole thing. gem is still mischievous and playful at the end of the fic, but pearl knows now that it's a bit, and with her "i won't hold it against you" promise, gem basically has her full consent to Cause Chaos for the sake of a good story. they're so silly goofy it makes me emotional <3

there is one very big plot inaccuracy that i will write off as minecraft mechanics. warm pie does not cut neatly!!!!! it will melt and all the filling will run out and you will be sad. so don't do that. Fiction Does Not Reflect Reality, etc.

silliness aside, though, i'm glad this fic made people smile! toxic yuri is fun, don't get me wrong, but i did also really want to explore what the between-session downtime looks like for a character as enigmatic as gem and how it affects her relationships with her friends. (now i just need them both to battle to the death on hermitcraft.)
