TikTok gone - fine. It sucks but I’ll deal with it.

But then last night my tumblr app stopped working and I found out that my account had AGAIN been removed/terminated?? (This shit happened to me and some others in Sept too for no damn reason at all)

Listen. I wish I was kidding but my heart nearly stopped and I’ve been so fuckin anxious, reaching out to the helpdesk and all - now it’s finally back after 12 hours. Why did this happen though?? Who the fuck even know.

Meanwhile I’m stressed out because tomorrow we have to go to a funeral of my wife’s cousin (we weren’t close at all but can’t get out of this one), where the bulk of people present are M*GA supporters. We have to be around them on fucking inaugurati*n day of all fucking days in a year. 😬 Including a bunch of unbearable cousins that have been absolute shit and we’ve had to deal with so much of their drama (including at the deathbed of my MIL and her funeral) over the past years.

The urge to break out my vape plus do a bunch of baking to destress and eat my/our feelings is strong today. (There are more job applications to work on though 😩) Because I feel like I’m running out of coping mechanisms, and all I want to do is write fic tbh but I haven’t been able to in two months or so, since my brain just won’t cooperate.

But, fuck. So glad Tumblr is back. I missed y’all, even though it was ‘only’ 12 hours.

Nope now it’s at the point that i’m shocked that people off tt don’t know what’s going down. I have no reach but i’ll sum it up anyway.

SCOTUS is hearing on the constitutionality of the ban as tiktok and creators are arguing that it is a violation of our first amendment rights to free speech, freedom of the press and freedom to assemble.

SCOTUS: tiktok bad, big security concern because china bad!

Tiktok lawyers: if china is such a concern why are you singling us out? Why not SHEIN or temu which collect far more information and are less transparent with their users?

SCOTUS (out loud): well you see we don’t like how users are communicating with each other, it’s making them more anti-american and china could disseminate pro china propaganda (get it? They literally said they do not like how we Speak or how we Assemble. Independent journalists reach their audience on tt meaning they have Press they want to suppress)

Tiktok users: this is fucking bullshit i don’t want to lose this community what should we do? We don’t want to go to meta or x because they both lobbied congress to ban tiktok (free market capitalism amirite? Paying off your local congressmen to suppress the competition is totally what the free market is about) but nothing else is like TikTok

A few users: what about xiaohongshu? It’s the Chinese version of tiktok (not quite, douyin is the chinese tiktok but it’s primarily for younger users so xiaohongshu was chosen)

Tiktok as a community has chosen to collectively migrate TO a chinese owned app that is purely in Chinese out of utter spite and contempt for meta/x and the gov that is backing them.

My fyp is a mix of “i would rather mail memes to my friends than ever return to instagram reels” and “i will xerox my data to xi jinping myself i do not care i share my ss# with 5 other people anyway” and “im just getting ready for my day with my chinese made coffee maker and my Chinese made blowdryer and my chinese made clothing and listening to a podcast on my chinese made phone and get in my car running on chinese manufactured microchips but logging into a chinese social media? Too much for our gov!” etc.

So the government was scared that tiktok was creating a sense of class consciousness and tried to kill it but by doing so they sent us all to xiaohongshu. And now? Oh it’s adorable seeing this gov-manufactured divide be crossed in such a way.

This is adorable and so not what they were expecting. Im sure they were expecting a reluctant return to reels and shorts to fill the void but tiktokers said fuck that, we will forge connections across the world. Who you tell me is my enemy i will make my friend. That’s pretty damn cool.

The Starship Patria was a small craft, with only the minimum mandated common areas; it shouldn't have been a shock to see Grantaire hanging around the bridge after his shift. In Security Officer Enjolras's defense, he didn't think anyone would have been prepared for the sight of his endlessly cynical, sarcastic, hard-drinking Communications Officer simply curled in a vacated chair with a mug of tea, surveying the stars.

It felt like a private moment, and Enjolras was willing to let it pass—he had been meaning to get an update from Captain Courfeyrac anyway—but his eyes met Grantaire's for just long enough that it would have been more awkward to walk away. Instead, he stepped closer.

"Hard to look away from, isn't it?" said Enjolras softly.

Grantaire laughed without joy. "Like a six-ship collision, maybe." Enjolras recoiled, and Grantaire added, "But ignore me, I know most of the Patria crew can't get enough of the sucking void."

"It's not a void." Enjolras tried to say it without bristling, but this struck close to home. "It's the opposite of a void."

"You'd be singing a different tune if you were out there without a suit," said Grantaire. "And none of that frontier shit if you please. Anyone who's been on the other end of a pioneering encounter knows it's only a happy story if you're the one doing the killing."

"It's possibility," said Enjolras, because snapping Then why are you here didn't feel conducive to building positive ship morale. "It's a chance to do better next time."

"With what?" Grantaire bit out. "Human nature is what it is. 'Second verse, same as the first, a little bit louder and a little bit—'"

Enjolras couldn't help it. "What's the point of anything, if that's true?"

"Ah," said Grantaire, raising his mug in a bitter toast, "now you're catching on."

"I have to believe we can change," said Enjolras, eyes tracing the makeshift constellations. "I have to believe if we try hard enough, push ourselves far enough towards empathy and wisdom and courage, we can surprise ourselves. Surprise each other. That's half of why we've ever reached out to the stars, isn't it? We want to discover what's out there, but at the same time, we hope to see ourselves in a new light."

Enjolras took a breath. He knew, from his years at Starfleet, that others sometimes found him intense. Intimidating.

Grantaire didn't look intimidated. He looked thoughtful. "Well," he said, "don't wait up for me to surprise you. I'm pretty much the same thing all the way down."

"You already have," said Enjolras, and when Grantaire blinked a second too long, "Is that tea?"

Grantaire laughed, this time with an echo of amusement. "Me and the replicator had a disagreement about what makes a hot toddy."

That felt like a good place to leave things. "Have a good night," said Enjolras, turning to go.

"You, too," said Grantaire. And then, so incongruous Enjolras nearly wondered if he'd imagined it, "I wish you pleasant surprises."

As of Jan 21st, 2025, a full copy of the constitution is no longer available on whitehouse.gov. I feel like this is a good time to remind everyone that the biggest threat to authoritarianism and facism is a well educated and informed population. Inform yourself and fight.
