he felt foolish from the start of this conversation -- hell, he'd felt foolish from the start of their MEETING back in ostagar. constantly tripping over himself, saying the wrong things, working in the wrong ways. it was why he deferred to her for leadership, for GUIDANCE. such a beacon of light was she in this dark time that he had trouble showing with his useless words (he still remembers divulging about how whenever he leads people, he ends up without PANTS. true story, by the way.) and had to rely on his just-a-bit-more-than-useless actions. 

he grew the fire: for her. to warm her, both literally and metaphorically, in hopes that the flames would chase away demons, ghosts, and shadows that prowled at the edges of their camp. he couldn't help himself, moving back into his tent to reach for the nearest blanket and traveled over to her once more with quiet steps, draping it around her shoulders to give a smidge of comfort. "i'm afraid your faith in me might perhaps be too MUCH -- i would call these twigs at best," came his lighthearted tease, although there was a weight of exhaustion lingering underneath. he remembered the days in which he could get a full night's sleep. he should've savored that.

alistair couldn't help the heat that crept up his neck and spread throughout his face at her words -- he was focusing on the wrong thing (and not for the first time in his life), hearing less about the NIGHTMARES and more about how she was waiting for him. maker, he was so truly, absolutely, and wholly doomed. "ah -- i was maybe overly optimistic that at least one of us could get a moment's peace." a smile emerged that faltered quickly, his once sheepish and maybe even BASHFUL expression turning into one of worry. "the archdemon again, wasn't it?" the screams so loud they still somehow echoed in his ears, the memory of its gaze so strong he could've sworn that something was WATCHING them in the darkness. a shake of his head. it would do no one any good for him to obsess over the nightmares now. he sat down next to the fire, motioned for her to join him (less a motion, more a tug on the blanket that covered her. like a fool.) and let a sigh escape his lips.

"they seem to be getting even worse -- which i didn't even think was POSSIBLE. goes to show maybe i should stop trying to ask the stars to challenge me when i assume the worst has come," came his grumble and he chewed on the inside of his lip for a moment as gaze moved from the flickering flames and back to her face, even brighter than the fire itself in his eyes. doomed. WHOLLY doomed.

"you could sleep now -- if you wanted. i don't think i'll be able to close my eyes for a while, personally. but... i could guard you. well, not GUARD you. i'm not as good as the dog with that, but... well, what i mean to say is..." idiot. absolute buffoon. he wanted to slap himself upside the head for his inability to SPEAK. "i mean that if you need to rest more, i could keep an eye on you. that's all."

VISION SHIFTS IN AND OUT OF FOCUS -- as if drifting from herself, as the light of the fire reflects against the ocean depths of her big, blue eyes. SUCH WET AND ENTRANCING AS THE WAVES THAT DANCE ALONG THE SURFACE. like a funeral pyre adrift upon a canoe. it's better this way, is it not? SHE WISHES NOT TO REFLECT UPON THE NIGHTMARES ANY LONGER, yet -- she cannot not let it go. cannot help but to think that perhaps there was something to parse from them. but so far, helena could not discern anything more than what they already know. she keeps seeing the archdemon, screeching, and . . .

PERHAPS SHE SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED HIM TO COME SO SOON AFTER. for each time she opens her eyes to the smell of fire, and the sound of distant snoring -- a gasp tearing lungs, and ripping through her worn throat.. his is almost always the first face she sees when she lolls her head to the side. and now she almost misses having him here, at least to ask... but when she hears him stumble in a shuffle of dirt and a grumble of annoyance, HER BACK STRAIGHTENS AND SMILE PERKS UPON PLUSH, DRIED OUT LIPS. head turns in his direction, without cause to hide her delight. WATCHING HIM FOR A TIME, UNTIL HE NOTICES HER.

her smile has only slightly diminished, WITH CLOSED, PLUSH LIPS MODEST AS SHE GREETS HIM PROPERLY. "alistair..." she stands, hands clasped before her politely. SHE DOESN'T EVEN REALIZE FULLY THAT SHE'S BEEN HOLDING HER BREATH. comforted now, even by the mere sight of him. THOUGH HIS VERBAL STUMBLING HAS HER SMILE TWITCHING UPWARD, and she has no semblance of worry for her betraying such open emotion. not now. NOT WITH THE ONLY PERSON HERE WHO COULD POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND HER. for as much as wynne is like a mother to her, and leliana has become like a sister she'd never had.. alistair was the one who shared the taint, and the true burden of their cause.

HER LIPS PURSE FOR A MOMENT TO STIFLE A LAUGH, although such emotion can never be hidden entirely thanks to expressive optics. "i'd say you're doing fine, considering you were able to find the sticks." she looks down briefly with a flicker of her gaze. DID HE REALLY EXPECT HER NOT TO HAVE HAD NIGHTMARES, AS WELL? they seem to go hand in hand, even if the settings were sometimes different. "do you really have to ask?" she gives him a pained look, almost searching for guidance. "i had been.. waiting for you to come, if you can believe it." she admits, gently. "i knew if i had awoken, it would not take long for you to follow."

oh also, I took my fuckin boots off last night for one of the dances during the kpop dance game at the afterparty and the drastic height change made everyone "woah" because not only was I wearing platforms, but I had lifts in them as well 😭 and then there was like 20mins of both staff and artists comparing their heights to mine and I was so flustered. I'm wearing heels and platforms forever 😭

After we went up that hill I wanted a tallcan so we went to the gastation n the girl tonio always buys scratchers from thru the drive thru window (there's no sidewalks out here or streetlights but there's fuckin. Drive thru liquor stores) told him "u finally came in!" N she's cuuute n has a wry smile, but tonio ended up telling me he has no "qualities" so I was forced to tell him "nah man ur a smart guy, ur funny too man" n idk complimenting other men is often uncomf, but u couldn't jus leave it at "I have no qualities" cus I kno what that feels like. When a depresh is fully in I feel like I have absolutely nothing to offer
