people in the notes are asking why this is bad and what the harm is, and thats a good question that im not sure if youre ready to know the answer to honestly.
for starters, wifi itself has always been...a weak point. people hype up VPNs alot but they are very good at adding an extra layer of protection (read: encryption) to your data. the current baseline for wifi security, WPA 0-3, is decent but not the best. There are indeed an ever growing and ever mutating field of people who only want to gather your personal data and wreak havoc with it. This little test thing by amazon does NOT help.
There is a REASON you are recommended to put your router in the center of your home, not just to maximize coverage inside but to also MINIMIZE coverage outside. you do NOT want other people to be able to hop into your wifi without consent, for a myriad of reasons but the main one is monitoring.
Much like how your internet service provider (ISP) can monitor what you do, so can anyone else who knows what they're doing. I am equally ashamed and proud at how low the ceiling is if one really applies themselves, a teenager in the back of a van can do the job if they are knowledgeable enough. im not saying there's youtube tutorials on how to effectively run a DDos attack and take their wifi offline from overwhelming the system so bad, and making worms, and keyloggers, and all manner of horrid things....but i mean the info is out there for literally ANYONE to utilize.
And with this Amazon Sidewalk thing, it is amplifying your home wifi signal for other people to grab onto. it is doing the one thing that would allow some shady adults to pull up on your block and just...make fucking bank. Did you ever want to know WHY most people in the tech community do not fuck with Tiles or Ring cams or smart home shit? this is why. This is the natural conclusion for everything being connected to fucking wifi. You have left so many entry points open for malicious people to intercept.
so what now? Step one: Opt out. you should NEVER have to opt-out of a service, especially if its to do with your internet when sensitive data is being passed around and ESPECIALLY if its an experimental one at that. that in-itself is a major red flag. Step two: do NOT shame people for using tech that helps them. I see you fuckers in the notes lambasting disabled people. fuck you. If this shit helps you, utilize it, disabled or not. But use it safely, put an internet condom on, get a VPN service that will help with devices that are not just PC's and tablets. Change your wifi password every 90 days or as close to that as you can manage. make them random and long, and make sure you are logging in from a secure device in a secure location. Step three: read Amazon's Whitepaper. its no longer than a decent oneshot and it talks about things in greater detail than i can in a [tumblr] post. Step Four: If this shit sounds interesting to you, and youve got more questions, educate yourself. I say that as encouraging as possibly can! Again, teenagers in ratty vans and used sedans can pick this stuff up, what the fuck is stopping you?! not a damn thing.
also 'private' tabs just dont record your history or cookies locally and has nothing to do with your isp logging your sites jsyk ๐Ÿ˜˜

Uhhhh..... heads up Amazon device users, I guess????
