Thinking about how some of the HSR men would react to you calling them a term of endearment in a different language/your native language when you two are NOT an established couple... (for me it would be something along the lines of “cariño” or “mi vida,” but of course you’re welcome to imagine any term from any language that suits you best!)

DAN HENG is confused the first few times you use the nickname. His brow will furrow and he may even adorably tilt his head a bit. He knows by your affectionate tone that it’s not anything bad, but of course, it doesn’t stop him from wanting to know exactly what it means.

He’ll turn to the data bank to look into the term’s origin and meaning, which causes him to fall down a rabbit hole of learning other terms of endearment from your language. You can expect him to shyly call you an endearment back the next time you use one on him, and he’s certainly blushing all the while.

JING YUAN’s smirk and the sparkle in his eyes the first time you let the term of endearment fall from your lips are indicators that you’ve made a terrible mistake. Whether or not you’re familiar with the dialect of the Alliance, he’ll fire a nickname from his own mother tongue right back at you, trying to gain the upper hand by flustering you instead.

And by Lan, does he succeed; you’ll keep the name-calling private and save it for when you two are alone, but he has no qualms about showering you with affection in front of a fleet of Cloud Knights, or even in front of the esteemed Fu Xuan. Good luck trying it on this one— you’ll find yourself in a full-scale flirting war, and this is a battle you can’t win.

BLADE isn’t the most emotive guy out there (when he’s not mara-struck), so it’s hard to gauge his reaction, at first. His blank expression makes it seem like the nicknames just roll off his back, so after a while, you stop using them under the presumption that they make him uncomfortable.

This has the opposite effect, of course, and he starts being a bit clingier than usual and following you around with what is most definitely not a pout on his face. It’s only when Kafka unsubtly points out that you’ve stopped calling him those “cute nicknames” that you put two and two together, and you immediately work to make things right. He may not be the best with words, but he’s happy to show his contentment with your endearments by holding you close to him.

JIAOQIU is flustered the first time, flushing red and ears twitching as he tries to compose himself after being caught off guard. Every time after that, though, he grins and graces you with those gorgeous golden eyes when he hears it. His tail may even start swishing from happiness, but you’ll never comment on it aloud, fearing that he’ll consciously stop it from happening.

His reaction is enough on its own to encourage you to keep calling him those sweet names, but you’re certainly not complaining about the delicious food that he starts bringing you in droves. (It doesn’t have anything to do with your little nicknames, don’t be silly.)

VERITAS most certainly knows what the term means, and that causes him to be even more flustered the first time you use it on him. He’s flushed from head to toe, and whatever tangent he was about to go on is completely lost to him, instead replaced by his silence as he hurriedly leaves wherever you’ve decided to pull this over on him.

He’s prepared the next time you do it, though. He doesn’t so much as bat an eye at the endearment, but he does continue the conversation in your language, speaking it flawlessly. Now it’s your turn to be flustered as you realize you enjoy hearing him speak in your mother tongue more than you care to admit. If there’s a slight smirk on his face from your reaction, neither of you acknowledge it.

AVENTURINE’s reaction is the reverse of how you would expect someone to react: flirt first, get flustered later. He doesn’t need any encouragement to be flirtatious with you, so when he hears the unfamiliar endearment for the first time, he assumes it’s just a normal part of this little game you two have been playing with each other. It’s easy for him to respond with endearments he’d heard older Avgins using growing up, and he even feels a bit giddy being able to use them on you.

Of course, he’s looking up meanings every time a new term pops up in your vocabulary, and his behavior takes a turn when he realizes you’ve started using more intimate endearments— ones typically reserved for spouses instead of those used for casual flirting. You think Aventurine looks good in any color, but you’re definitely partial to the light pink that graces his cheeks when he gets shy. 

SUNDAY has been trained to remain carefully composed at all times, but nothing could have prepared him for this. He’s another one that I think would actually know what the endearment means, so he’s immediately blushing and hiding behind his wings— a futile effort, since they’re fluttering far too much to properly serve as a curtain for his flushed face. Once he gathers his bearings, he continues your conversation and acts like it never happened.

He reacts this way the first few times, but as you persist in your efforts, he decides to start playing along. He’s not one to flirt back verbally— he couldn’t possibly make his intentions too obvious— but he does take pleasure in the fact that he can have the same effect on you. If you try to comment on the way that he stands and sits much closer to you now or that his hands linger on your skin far longer than usual, an expression of innocence and casual deflection is all you’re met with. And don’t you dare try to take the endearments back from him now— he’ll only fluster you more until you start calling him those pretty names again.

BOOTHILL takes a few seconds to realize exactly what’s happening, but once he does, you’re in danger. His confusion at the word almost distracts him from the tone you used while saying it, but he catches on quickly and is grinning widely when he does, all sharp teeth and adoration. He returns the favor in kind, and from that point forward you can expect to exclusively be referred to as “sweetheart,” “sugar,” “beau,” and the like.

He can’t get enough of the way the words roll off your tongue, and the sound of it gets him more drunk than any whiskey ever could. Keep things up, and you might find yourself being pulled toward him by the waist as he puts his hat on your head, finally making his feelings for you crystal clear.

Yukong feels so lonely after her daughter left the house for college, she wants a company and someone to take care of.

She is happy to feed you, a stray one, and you officially become hers when she managed to put on a collar on you.

However, she is ill-informed about taking a stray as a pet and never crossed her mind to spay you.

Resulting her kitty to be missing for days, only to come back with filled belly.

On the other side of the neighborhood, Fu Xuan has this healthy fat cat, she foolishly thought her cat is so lazy as long as he is inside, it will be okay.

Oh how wrong she is that Jing Nyan is determined enough to meet up with the stray cat walking outside their house.

Imagine the surprise on Fu Xuan's face when she sees the status from her neighbor about the oh-so-familiar looking kittens.

The meeting started with both women apologizing for not spaying their cats, and ended up with Fu Xuan roasting the hell out her own cat.

Honestly, i think that in the Astral Express it's a bit cold, since y'know, you're in space and stuff.

Let's be honest, the way she wears her jacket, doesn't really provide her warmth, so, she sits closer to you for warmth. <3

You finally came back from a mission on Jarilo-VI, to Himeko greeting you. She was sitting on the sofa, as usual, sipping out of her warm (burning hot) tea. "Welcome back, [Name]. How was your mission?" You look at her, move your hand in a waving gesture and answer. "Well, it was alright." You speak as you walk over to the sofa and sit next Himeko, not too far, but not too close. A few seconds later you notice Himeko, moving closer and closer, to the point she was leaning on you. "Himeko? Is there something wrong?" She looks at you and shakes her head. "No, not at all."

An evil idea popped in your head, you changed your body heat to freezing cold. Making Himeko flinch and stop leaning on you. "Pff, sorry sorry." You giggle, as you then change your body heat back to the warm one, and let her lean on you. <3

Gepard

Jarilo-VI' temperature is COLD. Very very cold. So, your body heat is usually really warm.

So, despite all the thick and warm clothing that Gepard wears, including his armor, he still tends to lean in closer to you because of your warmth.

You and Gepard were taking a walk through the District while he was off duty, stopping here and there once in awhile. "Geppie?" You call out for Gepard whose mind seemed to be in the clouds, as he was focusing on enjoying your warmth. "Huh? Oh, yeah what is it?" You then turn your attention to a cafe. "Let's go to that cafe!" Gepard turns his attention towards the cafe you were looking at. "Alright, sure." Once arriving at the cafe, you sit in the corner at a table that had a sofa which looked big enough to fit you and him, so you pat the sit next to you for Gepard to sit next to you, and he does just that. You both order hot cocoas, and Gepard ends up leaning so close to you, and became so comfortable that he fell asleep with his head on top of your own!

Jing Yuan

Ah, the big sleepy general, this man would slack off from work each time he had the chance. Such as, taking naps, doing ANYTHING but work.

Imagine being Jing Yuan's cuddle buddy. Even better that you can change your body heat, he'd do anything for a cuddle session with you especially during winter.

Jing Yuan pulled(dragged) you out of work, just for a cuddle session which he masked as an important buisness matter! So you had to go, all that it actually was... Was just his need for his cuddle. You ended up laying on top of Jing Yuan, who laid against Mimi. He was hugging you so tightly as if you were a warm plushie! Can you blame him tho? At some point he was hugging you so tight that you had to wake him up cuz you almost couldn't breathe! "'Yuan.." you poke at his face, yet he doesn't budge. "JING YUAN!" You had to yell at him to wake him up. "Huh? Hm? What is it?" He speaks as if he isn't squeezing you alive. "You're squeezing me!" He released his grip, but just dozed of back to sleep.

Legend says that he never heard the end of it from Fu Xuan, not only did he slacked off from work, but also dragged you!

Dan Heng

Imagine you and Mr. Grumpy sleeping together. And your body temperature dropping as you were sleeping!

Poor boy would be scared thinking you died, he had to shake you awake!

When you were tired, it was easier for you to let your temperature drop, as it wasn't consuming too much energy. Dan Heng didn't know that yet. You two were laying in bed. He was scrolling on his phone and holding you close to him, while you fell asleep, and your body temperature was slowly dropping, at some point, it started dropping so quickly that you scared him. "[NAME]! WAKE UP!" He shook you awake. "Danny..? What's wrong?" You looked at him confused. "Oh thank aeons, i thought you were dying!" That statement left you even more confused, as you were trying to process everything, Dan Heng hugs you. Soon after you hugged him and dragged him back to sleep, while running your fingers through his hair. "It's alright, i'm alright, go to sleep..." With a yawn you fell asleep and he did aswell a few seconds later.

Heyo, small disclaimer here, this is a Star Rail lore/theory dump abt the Rating Pistol Curio with A LOT of spoilers. Most of them are from the Penacony storyline, but there might be a few major ones from the Xianzhou Loufu arc. Most of them are Penacony 2.1 and 2.2 tho so if you aren't there yet I do not suggest reading under the cut!!! Ty <33

Those of you interested, buckle up y'all, it's a long one.

Okay, so I was feeling a little silly while doing my daily quest on the space station and decided to rate (with the Rating Pistol curio) my main team, which consists of Acheron, Pela, Sampo and Luocha.

So you could imagine my surprise when it only gave me a number per usual for one character, that being Pela. (She was like a 98 or something)

Instead, for Acheron, Sampo, and Luocha, it gave me this:

The same message, everytime, no matter what I did. I can't say I was very surprised abt Acheron - I mean, she's an Emanator of Nihility. Of course she's probably gonna get a weird response. Who intrigued me the most, was Sampo. Why was he getting such a weird rating like Acheron and Luocha (who we know quite literally nothing abt from the game itself, only some theroies from past Honkai installments)? Was it because he's a Masked Fool?

Well lucky for me, I have Sparkle, so I decided to see if that was the case.

No dice, it gave me the standard response. The character's name, and a seemingly random number that, from what I can tell, never changes. I decided to try the Trailblazer next, thinking the Stellaron they carry might have some kind of influence on the score, but I got pretty much the same result. The name I gave, and a seemingly random number. (84, if you're curious to see if it's the same on all accounts.)

So, I decided to run down the roster of all the characters I own, and came up with 4 other different ratings among my 34 characters.

First hit was Huo Huo, likely the Pistol discerning her and Tail as two separate but very closely tied entities...or just digging on the poor girl because that's just Hoyo's favorite thing to do I guess.

Second hit was Clara - which makes sense considering it seems to have done something similar to HuoHuo and Tail. It read both Clara and Svarog. Who's score is who's however, I cannot tell. I wouldn't be surprised if Hoyo has a random number generator they use and just assign a character a number.

Third hit was Dan Heng's. This one wasn't really a surprise considering the whole Imbibitor Lunae thing. I wish I had Dan Heng - Imbibitor Lunae though, cause now I'm curious to see the rating it gives him, and if it's the same or not. If anyone has him and is willing please reblog or send me a ss of the response!! I'm super curious!!

The last hit though probably surprised me the most. I was expecting Tingyun, Misha, or maybe even Gallagher to have a hit of some kind, even if it wasn't as major as "Rating Invalid." Just something to indicate confusion at either Misha not even being real, or Tingyun being a puppet of Phantilya and likely not the real Tingyun (I'm coping shut up).

No no, instead my 4th hit was none other than -

March 7th.

This actually really shocked me at first. Why in the world is sweet March 7th getting a similar rating to an Emanator??? Of Nihility at that?? And then it hit me.

March 7th's companion quest.

The majority of the quest is March 7th and Fu Xuan using the Matrix of Prescience to search March's mind for her lost memories, trying to see if maybe they're simply blocked by trauma response or if they've been tampered with. They find out someone has indeed tampered with her memories after all, and it's not just some random bad guy either. It's the Garden of Recollection themselves. And they are insistent on March not digging any deeper into her memories, claiming it doesn't matter to her anymore, what matters is who she is as a person right now.

And considering the rating and who she shares that rating with - talk about suspicious. I don't think it has to do with her amnesia, while she does share memory problems with Acheron, there is nothing to indicate Sampo or Luocha suffer anything similar. Another thing is - the Rating Pistol never says any of their names, hinting that maybe that's another thing they share with Acheron - a fake name, or an alias...and if you know even a little about past Honkai lore like I do (and the stuff ik surrounds Welt) then you know that possibly implicates Luocha.

So what could this all mean?

I think it could mean a multitude of things. Considering we don't know exactly how the Rating Pistol's score works, it makes it difficult to know it's criteria, especially since I don't have quite a few characters that have a possibility to give us a better understanding. Characters like Blade, Jingliu, Imbibitor Lunae, two essentially undead powerhouses and the reincarnation of a former High Elder, or even Topaz and Aventurine, two of the Ten Stonehearts. (Again if anyone is willing to ss the Rating Pistol's response to any of these characters and reblog, please do!!! I'd love to hear your two cents on the matter too <33)

But what we can tell is it seems to recognize a certain level of power. Which only makes this more confusing - because if that's the case why is an intelligence officer like Pela getting a 98 for a score while Boothill, a Galaxy Ranger with a hefty bounty on his getting a 44?? But, putting aside the Curio for a second, let's look at what the 3 share in common along with Acheron.

Mystery. We know nothing about March prior to the Express, we know next to nothing about Luocha besides that he doesn't seem to be a fan of the Abundance and there is something or someone wicked weird in that coffin - and all we know for sure about Sampo is he's a Masked Fool. Otherwise, we don't know shit about the guy.

( There's a lot of theories the guy isn't even from Jarilo VI after Topaz's trailer, and I can't say I blame them. The whole Masked Fool reveal and him leaving his Mask at the Tavern isn't helpful either. Maybe Belobog was a place for him to lay low, not his homeworld. Either way, he's likely left the planet at some point.)

What I honestly think is that maybe the Emanator of Elation! Sampo theories may hold a little more merit than I thought. I can't say I support the theory for sure, but this along with Sparkle asking him if something bad is coming to Jarilo VI once he asks for his Mask back...certainly does hint at the fact man is quite a bit stronger than he acts. He is a Masked Fool, I suppose. Acting is kinda their schtick.

But that doesn't mean March 7th or Luocha are Emanators either - only that they definitely possess power - power likely close to an equal level with an Emanator, whether they know it or not. Besides, I struggle to think of any path Luocha could follow, unless he was somehow made an Emanator of Abundance against his will, and his hunt for the Aeon is so he can be free of being tied to the path. But March doesn't entirely show much evidence of being an Emanator. In fact there's nothing really specific that points to anything about her past identity.

All we know is she definitely holds more power than what she currently uses, and what kind of power that is exactly is something we'll have to wait and find out, unfortunately, just like we do with Sampo and Luocha.

blade was old before he was de-aged and idk why the powers that be would be worried about youthful beauty so i think hed have gone back to his physical prime rather than early adulthood, and all the best blacksmiths ive met have been late 30s/early 40s

kafka imo is close to 40 because i like to hc that she mostly raised us

i was thinking about xingyue child again today.

That in itself would make a great post i'm sure. Anyways:

Xingyue child being a child that runs, climbs, plays... but nobody has the energy/mentality for them.

Tiny toddler xingyue child who runs around and wants to play

Early morning they push some dried fruit into dan fengs mouth, climbs up on his shoulders and screams "how is it!?" And he answers "mhm" because his mouth is full and he just got up.

Toddler xingyue child who hides, sneaks, and leaps at yingxing the moment they think he doesn't see them (he knows. They're not great at hiding), then he catches them mid jump and twirls them around two or three times. But he's an old man at this point so playtime is usually rather short (also they get scolded by dan feng when they overdo it. Like, both of them)

Due to this, xingyue child's energy goes THROUGH THE ROOF whenever uncle jing yuan visits. Someone they can play with a lot? And no danger of getting scolded? Yeah!! Well he's technically a lot younger than yingxing. And even if the child was TOO energetic for him, yingxing would just see it as revenge for how jing yuan was when he was younger.

They play nicely with baiheng. Nobody knows why. Baiheng is the only one who gets the "calm toddler" experience (mostly because xingyue child just cuddles with them, due to baiheng holding them over her head, claiming they're a starskiff, and xingyue child didn't like the experience.)

They don't play with jingliu. Why not? They don't want to bother her. They're just happy she decided to visit.

The first time they all wanted to bring her to a festival, dan feng started fussing and was like "no. Too dangerous. They can't." Only to be coaxed into letting xingyue child come along because there is no way anyone would go up against all five of them, right? They had a lovely time too.

Running up and down the astral express when dan heng fails to entertain them adequately. Dan heng trying to catch them but this isn't their first life. It's the second and they decided to live it slippery and as a menace.

The entire astral express crew absolutely giving up when xingyue child ate candy from the IPC and now they're high on sugar because they've only ever eaten xianzhou sweets, if anything, which aren't that sweet.

On second thought maybe they're just used to dried fruits because of their upbringing.

Dan heng trying to help them brush their teeth but they don't like it so they bite his arm instead. The teeth barely even go through the sleeve but it's the thought that counts (????)

Take two with blade who just says "are you a good little kid? Good kids get their teeth brushed." And they just let him bc yeah y didnt u just say so.

i don't know why but i think yingxing, and also blade, are somehow better at parenting than dan feng/ dan heng. Maybe a short-life thing. Parental instinct and such. Whereas dan feng just thought every vidyadhara can do this/that from birth (spoiler: they can't bc its literally their first time around) and dan heng is torn between his memories, which suggest they can do this/that from birth, imaginary dan feng who lives in some corner of his mind and claims maybe they need some help learning this/that, and blade, who tells him he's stupid for expecting a toddler to be able to do this/that the reason being x/y/z.

Jing yuan as a babysitter. But really he just sleeps the whole time (or pretends to) and yanqing and fu xuan are the ones actually looking after xingyue child. if he is awake he just takes them to the seat of divine foresight and plays works a bit with them

Xingyue child playing with bailu by following her every step. Like a little duckling. Bailu feeds them a lot. They gain a bit of weight every time they're with bailu.

Ok, the stellaron hunters probably not being as involved. But i can imagine kafka holding them up by their neck/tail and asking if anyone lost their hybrid.

Also xingyue in both lives with an azure dragon plush(?) And dragging it with them always, even though the damn thing is slightly bigger than they are.

"How dare you!" Luo Xiaoyi immediately scolded. "What nonsense are you talking about!"

All the people kneeling in the hall didn’t dare to raise their heads, but they all said in unison, "We wouldn’t dare deceive you."

The synchronized response left Luo Xiaoyi speechless, rubbing his cheeks several times.

His third brother had slapped him with too much force earlier, and the pain still lingered.

Fu Ting looked at the green jade token in his hand, then at Qichi.

She stood behind the screen, her face slightly pale, but calm and silent, as if she were merely an observer.

"Everyone out," he suddenly said.

The people kneeling on the ground scrambled to their feet and hurried out of the room with their heads lowered.

Luo Xiaoyi glanced at his third brother’s expression and quickly said, "Third Brother, maybe it's all a misunderstanding. You heard them, they only recognize the jade token. How could this be related to Sister-in-law?"

As he spoke, he shot pleading glances toward the screen, hoping his sister-in-law would step in and explain herself.

Qichi gripped the veil in her hand, her eyes fixed on Fu Ting.

Luo Xiaoyi grew anxious. What was going on? Usually, his sister-in-law had no trouble handling his third brother.

Just then, an official rushed in from outside and greeted Fu Ting. "Grand Protector, many merchants in the city have come to the government office, asking why the shopkeepers from the Yuxing Merchant House were dismissed. They are very worried and can no longer focus on their business. What should we do?"

Fu Ting glanced at Luo Xiaoyi.

Luo Xiaoyi froze for a moment, then quickly stepped forward and whispered, "Third Brother, do you not trust me? I took care of it before dawn. The men I sent to take over were dressed in plain clothes, and I specifically ordered and threatened the shopkeepers not to leak a word in the city. Qichi remained calm, thinking to herself, it seems Xinlu has successfully returned to the residence.

Originally, she had planned to use the other merchants to pressure him, hoping to dispel his doubts. But now, it seemed she had no other choice.

Fu Ting asked, "Was it you?"

She finally spoke. "Was what me?"

He stared at her face, nodding slightly. "It seems I’ll have to confirm it myself."

With that, he turned and strode out.

Qichi stood there, suddenly realizing what he meant. She hastily donned her veiled hat, lifted the hem of her clothes, and quickly followed him out

When she got outside, Fu Ting was nowhere to be seen. Only the soldiers stood guard, in layers, as if preparing for battle.

One of the soldiers who didn’t recognize her stepped forward to block her, but Luo Xiaoyi, who had followed her out, glared at the soldier, who then quickly backed off.

Qichi grabbed a horse nearby, mounted swiftly, and galloped off without saying a word.

Luo Xiaoyi wanted to shout after her, but remembering his third brother’s actions, he figured that he could not reveal his sister-in-law's identity. He kept his mouth shut and held back.

Night had fallen, but the city gates remained open.

Qichi galloped back to the residence, her mind nearly blank.

Upon arriving at the gate, she dismounted from the horse and removed her veiled hat before hurrying toward the main hall.

Just as she reached the entrance, her footsteps faltered.

Xinlu knelt outside the door. When she saw Qichi, she finally dared to rise and quickly left.

Qichi entered the room.

The room was brightly lit, yet everything was in complete disarray. Chests and cabinets had been opened, the entire place thoroughly searched.

Fu Ting stood by the table, holding a booklet in his hand.

But it wasn’t her ledger.

It was merely something she had casually written in, notes for calculating accounts. The real ledger had long been locked away, and she had ordered Xinlu to move it to a different location.

He might be able to detect some clues in this room, but he wouldn’t find any solid evidence.

Fu Ting glanced at the booklet.

The handwriting was different from what he had seen that night.

The characters on the note passed to him that night were wild and unrestrained, clearly not the handwriting of a woman.

There still wasn’t a single flaw.

He looked at her. "Are you going to tell me how you just so happened to come into possession of that jade token? Or how you ended up at that shop?"

Qichi softly asked, "If I told you, would you listen?"

"No," he replied. "Because it’s you, everything now makes perfect sense."

Resettling the refugees, buying horses with thousands of gold.

The origin of every bit of wealth was now clear.

The reason why this merchant house had gone to such great lengths to support his Protectorate also became clear as well.

Qichi's lips moved slightly before pursed gently.

Her subordinates wouldn’t betray her,and he hadn't found anything decisive. If she truly wanted to cover her tracks, there was still a way out.

All she had to do was fabricate another lie, just like last time.

But she couldn’t bring herself to speak.

Fu Ting lifted the jade. "This is your personal belonging, right?"

She was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Yes."

His face turned dark. "Then why don’t you continue lying? You could tell me this wealth was all left to you by the Prince of Guang."

She said nothing.

"Apart from the Turks, the only one who can make me mobilize troops and personally conduct a search is you," he said, nearly spitting out the words, "my wife".

Qichi responded, "Today, I could have stayed away. I could have ignored the losses. But I didn’t want the northern lands to suffer."

Fu Ting stared at her. "That’s right, I forced you."

She raised her eyes to him. "I only wanted you to know that, just like you, I too desire what is best for the northern lands."

Even if she had personal motives, hoping that the prosperity of the northern lands would benefit her as well, she still wanted northern lands to thrive.

He took two steps toward her. "Then why didn’t you show yourself and tell me directly?"

She spoke softly. "I am of noble birth, but I’ve been secretly engaging in business. It’s unbecoming of my status."

"Status?" Fu Ting sneered. "Do you think I care about status, given where I come from?"

Whether she was a covert merchant or an open one, since he married her, he would accept it. Why would he care about her status?

Li Qichi was so astute, she couldn’t have failed to realize this.

Her voice became even softer. "If you knew, it would only make things harder for you."

"Why don’t you tell the truth?" He lowered his head and stared into her eyes. "The reason you lied to me is simply that you don’t trust me."

Her eyelashes trembled, and she pressed her lips together.

Fu Ting's face was tense, his eyes dark. "You didn’t even see me when I summoned you, and you guarded yourself against me. Am I really so unworthy of your trust?"

He thought back to the woman who had smiled at him in Gaolan Prefecture.

She had said, As long as you’re Fu Ting, you’ll definitely be able to pay it back.

At the time, he thought he had found a wife who trusted and supported him, enough to help him through the harsh winter of the northern lands.

Even if later on he realized she wasn’t sincere, at least there was a truth between them.

But now, it turned out even this was a lie.

He gripped her chin, forcing her to look up at him. "You lied to me, yet still sought to manipulate me."

Her face was pale under the light.

He spoke in a cold voice. "Do you really think I, Fu Ting, am someone you can manipulate?"

He let go of her, turning to stride out the door.

Without thinking, Qichi chased after him. She caught up with him in the corridor and grabbed his hand.

Fu Ting turned his head. "Let go."

She didn't release her grip on his hand.

Fu Ting reached out to pry her fingers away.

Her heart sank as his fingers finally managed to slip away from hers.

Li Yan heard the rustle of wind and hurried to the outside of the main hall, only to see his aunt standing alone in the corridor.

He approached her, and the sight of her made him feel as though he was seeing someone entirely different. Only after several moments did he dare speak, “Aunt, what’s wrong?”

Qichi stared straight ahead, coming back to herself only now. She shook her head lightly.

Worried, Li Yan reached out to support her. “Aunt, your complexion doesn’t look well. You should go back and rest.”

Qichi allowed him to support her back to her room and sat down on the couch.

Li Yan glanced around at the disarray in the room, clearly shocked. Standing by her side, he asked gently, “Aunt, did you have an argument with Uncle? If there’s anything troubling you, please tell me.”

Qichi touched his face and smiled softly. “It’s nothing much. It’s just that he found out my greatest secret.”

Li Yan froze, then quickly caught on. "Uncle found out?"

She nodded, still smiling, yet the smile did not reach her eyes. She murmured, as if in a trance, “If one day I can no longer help you, will you be able to continue on your own?”

Li Yan was taken aback. “Why would Aunt say such a thing?”

Her eyes flickered slightly, and she let out a soft laugh. “I was only joking. Don’t overthink it.”

Li Yan breathed a sigh of relief. His aunt had always taught him to look ahead; so how could she say such a thing.

He glanced around, worried. With such a scene, who knew what condition his uncle might be in.

Xinlu brought the food in. She noticed her master sitting silently on the couch and quickly placed the dishes before her. She then started tidying up without uttering a word.

Li Yan handed Qichi the chopsticks. “Aunt, please have something to eat first.”

Qichi accepted them calmly. “You all may leave now. I’d like to be alone for a while.”

Seeing that she seemed to have regained some composure, Li Yan felt somewhat reassured. He signaled Xinlu, and they both left the main hall together.

Qichi sat there alone, the chopsticks hovering over the food. Her mind drifted back to the scene just now.

When Fu Ting had pried her fingers away, she had said: I still have something to say.

As he had looked at her, his voice low and cold: I no longer know how many of your words to me are true.

All the words she had wanted to say suddenly caught in her throat.

She had never heard him speak in such a tone, filled with utter disappointment.

The sky was just beginning to lighten when the temple gates opened.

The abbot stepped outside and was surprised to see the person standing there. He quickly clasped his hands in greeting, “Madam, you’ve already returned to your residence. Why have you come back to the temple?”

Qichi stood before the gate, her clothes fluttering in the wind. She had only one horse behind her and no attendants.

She couldn't sleep all night and had come here at the first light of dawn.

“I recall that this temple offers the lighting of Buddha lamps.”

The abbot replied “I assume Madam wishes to light one with the Grand Protector?”

She shook her head and spoke softly, “I wish to light one for the deceased. I wonder if it's okay.”

The abbot chanted the Buddha's names, “Of course. Madam, please follow me.”

Qichi followed him into the temple.

They passed through the Hall of Great Strength and entered a Buddhist hall filled with bright lanterns.

Near the door was a small table with brushes, ink, and paper.

The abbot picked up a brush and handed it to her with both hands. “Madam, please write down the name of the deceased.”

Qichi held the brush and stood before the table, her head lowered for a long time before she finally began to write on the paper.

The abbot sighed at the sight. “It seems Madam’s heart is burdened with deep sorrow.”

She finished writing and set down the brush. “Perhaps.”

The abbot chanted the Buddha's names again, “If one’s heart is burdened, it is difficult to see the true self.”

She smiled faintly. “I have never lost my true self. It has remained unchanged.”

The abbot sighed and took the paper. Seeing that the name bore the title of the Prince of Guang, he dared not delay and personally placed the paper onto the Buddha lamp.

The lotus-shaped Buddha lamp was lit, and the abbot handed it to Qichi before bowing and taking his leave.

Qichi held the lamp in her hands and placed it among the other lamps.

She knelt on the prayer mat before the lamp, staring at its flickering flame.

It was as if she could see her brother’s face, pale as he lay on the daybed, saying to her: From now on, the Prince of Guang’s household will depend on you.

And also A’Yan.

Her heart tightened little by little.

She thought of Fu Ting.

He believed she didn’t trust him.

Last night, in the corridor, she had wanted to tell him—it was not that she didn’t trust him; it was that she didn’t dare.

He was her last support. In front of him, she couldn’t afford to make a single wrong step. She couldn’t reveal her true colors until she was absolutely certain.

But how could she possibly explain all this?

If she did, what would he think?

The wealth she held was her last assurance, and it was also the foundation upon which she intended to pave the way for A’Yan. There was no room for compromise. From the moment she arrived in the northern lands, there has been no turning back.

The flames flickered, and it felt as if her brother was lying before her at this moment, every one of his instructions still ringing in her mind.

And then, another voice rang in her mind again: Do you really think I, Fu Ting, am someone you can manipulate?

Her heart ached, and her vision blurred.

Those few words repeated over and over in her mind, refusing to fade—

From now on, the Prince of Guang’s household… will depend on you.

I know, Brother, I know.

A’Yan...

I will take care of him, I promise I will take good care of him.

She pressed a hand against her chest, her hand wet with tears. She whispered softly, “Brother, I’m sorry. I'm afraid I won’t be able to fulfill your request…”

Right now, she had not yet won Fu Ting’s heart, and she had nothing left to rely on.

Instead, she had chilled his heart.

“Perhaps I was wrong. I don’t even know where I stand in his heart. I didn’t dare. Brother, do you hear me?”

“I’m sorry, Brother, I’m sorry. If it really comes to that, please don’t blame me. Don’t blame me…”

Her vision was blurred, and she didn’t know what she was saying anymore. She just wanted to find some peace of mind.

She had come this far without anyone to confide in. Only here, only now, could she allow herself a moment of weakness.

In this deserted Buddhist temple, she allowed herself this momentary indulgence, conversing with her dearest family member.

Speaking in a voice only she could hear.

She apologized to her brother over and over again.

Hoping he could forgive her.

For a long time, until she could no longer see the candlelight, she suddenly heard a voice. “Princess?”

She slowly raised her eyes and saw a blurry figure standing by the door.

Notes: [1] 世子 means an heir. It could be an heir of princes, dukes, or other nobles. I always translated it as Prince’s heir or Prince’s son, for example Li Yan would be Prince of Guang’s son. But today I came across the translation of 世子 as Princely Heir for the heir of a prince and I think it sounds good. So I’ll use it from now on. But as for addressing, I’ll still translate it as Young Lord for Li Yan since he hasn’t bestowed the hereditary title for now.

hsr gameplay paths. they mean something.

"oh but the gameplay paths dont mean anything its only the lore paths" the game literally shows us what the gameplay paths are.

the difference between "gameplay" and "lore" paths is mostly due to an inconsistency between paths that are actively being walked on (ie. pathstriders) versus the paths that the characters use in game. take for instance, fu xuan, a character who is a pathstrider on the hunt path by way of her being a high ranking member in the luofu, but having a preservation path in game. or even jing yuan, who is an erudition character, yet would also be considered a hunt pathstrider with the luofu.

this... isn't a mistake. it's intentional. the game shows us this. think, every time trailblazer shifts their path around. destruction? shows us nanook. preservation? qlipoth. harmony? xipe. this pattern is most likely going to continue. so what do these cutscenes have to do with the playable paths? well, trailblazer shifts their path every time one happens. this creates a clear connection in my mind: gameplay paths are distinctly connected to the aeon who has acknowledged the character in question, but has little to do with the path they actually stride on. (i think this doesnt work 100% the same for emanators, however, given that they're explicitly given stuff from the aeon in question. acheron matches nihility, and likely when herta is given a non-doll form, she will still be erudition. phantilya... i dont think matters to this discussion, but its likely if she was playable, she'd be destruction)

another huge reason why i believe this is because some characters follow paths where they are physically unable to be acknowledged by their aeon. argenti follows the beauty, an aeon who is deceased. same with all of the trailblazers, who follow akivili, who we're told again and again is dead. i have theories why fuli and aha don't acknowledge anyone either- fuli is the remembrance. they're always there. but more importantly, fuli is always watching. its likely they take a hands off approach. as for aha, i imagine regular followers don't interest them- there's that anecdote about the worm, for instance. aha is here for a good time, and very distinctly, an interesting time, which we can see exemplified in the masked fools. (this is specific for alive aeons, by the way, i don't think dead aeons can acknowledge anyone if they tried, ena aside. the order is distinctly a revival/recreation using sunday as a seed; not to mention ena is something mentioned to have been absorbed by xipe. it's possible their essence was still left over. regardless, i don't think sunday would be counted as an "emanator of the order", especially since the plan didn't work)

additional theory? trailblaze pathstriders are the most likely to switch paths. we already have 3/5 currently playable trailblaze characters with more than one path: trailblazer themself with destruction/preservation/harmony, dan heng having both hunt and destruction, and march 7th going from preservation to hunt. i don't think this is a mistake, as trailblazers canonically move across the universe with the intention of helping as many worlds as possible. my working theory is that the trailblaze path is the most likely to be acknowledged by more than one aeon. if the pattern continues, and we see welt or himeko get new paths in the future, i wouldn't be surprised by it; likely dan heng and ESPECIALLY march will be getting additional units, and trailblazer is a given, but any trailblaze character getting a new one is not something i think is out of the question: simply, with the flexibility of the path, in my mind, more aeons are willing to look at them.

anyways!! the next fic i wanna talk about is... also jingfu 😭😭😭 this is embarrassing

presenting: ✨ jingfu vegas wedding ✨

there was a time i got back into asoiaf and jaime/brienne, and there's this subgenre of jb fics where they get quickly married on the quiet isle for one reason or another! and i just got obsessed with this type of wedding, and then i got to thinking about vegas weddings, and then i imagined jingfu drunk and giggly and happy and my gdocs stood NO chance

what's great about jingfu is, as i hope to never stop reminding my readers, is that they're chinese living in a chinese setting wifh chinese culture. so you can't just throw them into an actual vegas wedding situation—china has its own wedding ceremonies and the luofu must have its own technological advancements in that area too! so long story short i had a lot of fun brainstorming the wedding rituals and how it would mesh with the luofu, how people would even discover a wedding has taken place considering chinese weddings CAN technically be done without witnesses if you're feeling quirky enough (like maybe legally it's not allowed but ive seen cdramas where they do the same thing so like. me 🤝 cdramas; ignoring things for dramatic flair), and generally just trying to write their world vividly enough that it doesn't feel like Vague American Fantasy Spaceship #2432

i do think i kinda succeeded!! and even if i didn't, well, in my head i can clearly visualize it and in the end this is a fic for ME and not for yall, sorry but i come first when it comes to my fanfic :P

also i wrote my thoughts on the au while we were out with paternal relatives eating hotpot, so of course their drunken wedding feast is hotpot. i couldn't resist

i also really like these lines i giggle everytime! because i ship jingfu but i also ship jingheng in the pathetic unrequited pining old man jing yuan kinda way.... its hilarious how down bad jing yuan still is for dan heng/dan feng and so since i needed a catalyst for the drinking i used dan heng hehe

also i researched chinese constellations for this because i needed more drunk activities and i figured i could do one of those "laying on the grass and pointing at the stars" except ofc it's the luofu so that's synthetic grass and false stars and their stars are also different and it would be very weird to mention ursa major or something! so i had to do research </3 i swear the things i do for my craft

Jing Yuan, thanks be to Lan, had left behind some of his formal clothes at her residence, which meant the two of them did not have to sneak all the way back to Exalting Sanctum just to nab the appropriate garments. If they had not been drunk, the journey from the gardens to her quarters would not have taken so long. Unfortunately: they were. Unfortunately: Jing Yuan was enamored with every flower that passed him by, and Fu Xuan was busy counting the number of off-color stones in the cobbled path.

They did still make it there. Eventually.

In one of Fu Xuan’s many closets were the robes they’d worn to Qixi-jie—his a simple but elegant grey trimmed with white, and hers a dainty pink, complete with a round embroidered fan. Fu Xuan took Jing Yuan’s out, shoved it into his arms, and then shoved him out. He staggered out into the hallway, and then turned to blink at her, lost.

Fu Xuan rolled her eyes. “Well? What are you waiting for?”

“Oh,” Jing Yuan said. The light came back into his eyes. “Oh! Yes.”

Stupid, she thought, and closed the door. But apparently she’d said it out loud, because he yelled, muffled, “You’re the one marrying me!”

“I won’t if you don’t shut up!” Fu Xuan yelled back.

Immediate silence.
