There was no way he could go swimming, but Keith could. The benefits of not having wings. “Think you’d want to swim?”

“I don’t really like swimming, I have scars.” The sun beat down on them, so Lance decided to take his shirt off. He half expected Keith to do the same till he absorbed what the other man had said. Scars didn’t seem like something to be ashamed of, even angels retained scars. His sister Veronica had a scar on her left eyebrow from a tussle with an Earth dog, and remembering that made Lance realize he was starting to miss her.

“Scars show how hard you’ve fought, I think you should be proud of them.” His voice lowered as he scratched the back of his neck, feeling the distinct lack of a tag that would usually stick out of shirt and onto that particular spot.

Keith sighed, giving Lance a slightly pained look that basically communicated ‘you don’t understand’. It had been getting easier to read Keith’s expressions. “They’re surgery scars Lance, not battle ones.”

“Surgery sounds like a battle to me.” Lance shrugged, he didn’t mean what he said literally after all. That was something odd about Keith; he noticed that the man sometimes couldn’t tell if Lance was being literal or sarcastic.

Keith snorted, “You’re such a dork.” He elbowed Lance in the side, which caused Lance to laugh and stumble in an attempt to dodge the limb fruitlessly.

He got his balance again before responding, “Also, demons have surgery?”

“Mhm, we’re not some primitive species Lance. I got top surgery about a year before I ran away.” He had asked because angels didn’t usually have surgeries in the traditional sense. Some special angels, usually the ones in the council, had abilities that got rid of a need for surgery. Injuries that required surgery were rare as well.

Lance thoughtfully hummed as he took off his shoes to stick his feet in the sand, he had never felt sand before. It was oddly satisfying to touch. Top surgery rang a bell in his mind, but it took him some thought to finally remember what that surgery was for. He had heard about it vaguely when he had told his mom he was a man, it had been so long ago that he had forgotten. “So you’re trans too?”

“Wait- What??” Keith stared blatantly at Lance’s chest, which caused Lance to start laughing. He knew he didn’t have any top surgery scars, he hadn’t needed surgery and likely never would for this sort of thing.

Lance grinned, “I was able to convince the council to give me a different form instead.”

He stared at him like Lance had two sets of wings, his eyes looking him up and down. It reminded him of Keith’s reaction when they had first met. “What do you mean by that?” Keith questioned.

This was a bit of an uncomfortable topic for Lance, but he understood it was something he would need to explain to Keith at some point anyways. It was a piece of his life that was important to him as a person, integral to who he was.

“I was born a girl, but my soul didn’t fit that body. I was able to get a new body to switch to. Honestly, don���t ask me how it works. I have no clue.” This was the stock standard explanation he said to distant family members who hadn’t seen him for a few years. Not only that part about him being trans, but also his body being a completely different one.

Keith’s eyebrows furrowed, “Who’s body was it originally?” Oh right, he usually didn’t have to include that part because his family knew exactly who’s body he had taken.

“My twin sister Rachel’s. We did a little swap, that included our names too.” Keith looked flabbergasted, staring at Lance with a slightly open mouth. Lance was confused for a moment as he watched Keith lower down onto the ground, then he realized Keith was sitting down. He plopped down beside him, feeling the sand beneath them with his hands.

His fingers carded through the grains absentmindedly, and he was pretty distracted till Keith groaned. Lance looked up to see Keith pressing his palms to his eyes and leaning back. “Why couldn’t I be an angel and have a twin to magically switch bodies with?! The world is so unfair!”

Lance nodded to him, he did feel a little bad for Keith. “Sadly it is.”

Keith looked down at the sand, “Well, I am happy you were able to do that.” He sounded genuine, which caused Lance to have the urge to curl up into a ball and bury his face in his knees from how sweet that was to hear from someone who was initially so stoic.
