Fellow Travelers Fic Recs | February Recap
February was the month for fluff! And boy, did this little fandom need it! So many wonderful fics this month, but I've highlighted the Top 20 that've stuck with me the most. Some Valentine's fluff, fake dating fun, our first Frankie/Marcus main pairing fic, smoking hot smut, a couple outstanding outsider POVs and a few phenomenal tearjerkers. A little something for everyone! ♦️ More fic recs can be found at the fic register, here. Not quite what you're looking for? Tell us what you had in mind, here! -> 💌 ✍️ In addition to the fics highlighted below, there were many new additions to the Promise You WILL Write collection. Check them out here! If you're feeling inspired, please visit the collection to leave a prompt for someone to write or take one for yourself… All are welcome! You can check out their page @promiseyouwillwrite for more info.
💞 February is for lovers... and domestic fluff... and slow dancing... and clothes sharing...and so much more! How do I love thee, let me count the weeks... is a month-long Valentine's Celebration and fic collection based on different prompts each week and hosted by @fellow-travelers-events. 💜 Check out my round-up's for Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3.
♦️ Yours forever anyway by @bluebellsinburbank | ConsumingLove (Bluebellstar) [G, 733] Hawk and Tim dance together.
♦️ Mad about the Boy by @redmyeyes | redmyeyes [E, 5K] “Tell me,” Hawk said, tilting Tim’s head back to give his forehead a quick kiss, “what does my boy want for his birthday?”
“Am I still? Your boy?” Part 3 of Fellow Travelers
♦️ Love Is An Angel Disguised As Lust by Anonymous [E, 2K] Hawk's eyes darkened, from outshining the daytime sky to rivalling the night. His lips curved into a wicked smirk. If Tim didn't know better, he might suspect he'd just played right into Hawk's hands.
"Educate me."
That wasn't exactly what Tim had intended. But, his attention caught by the glint off Hawk's wedding ring, Tim decided he could work with that.
Or, The edging fic that's probably sixty percent soft.
♦️ Rail me until I can't stand by @carnivalrow | nightfall_in_winter [E, 5K] Various missing scenes from episodes 1 and 8. Chapter 1 - Hawk's POV of their last time before Hawk's betrayal. Chapter 2 - Tim's POV of the same scene. Chapter 3 - A missing scene from Episode 1. Hawk is Tim's first because Skippy never went all the way with Bob…
♦️ Beguiled Again by @bluebellsinburbank | ConsumingLove (Bluebellstar) Tim comes home late, finding Hawk asleep and wearing his shirt.
Part 6 of Bravery | Part 3 of FT Valentine's Month
♦️ I Sing the Body Electric by telescape8💠 [M, 20K, WIP] Modern AU. It all starts on Election Night 2016. Tim falls hard. Hawk falls harder.
♦️ All Tied Up With Nowhere To Go by @jesterlesbian | captainquint [E, 2K] “Are they too tight?” Hawk asked, tugging on Tim’s wrists.
Tim’s wrists were, at that moment, bound to the headboard of Hawkins Fuller’s bed by some carefully knotted neckties. Tim was struck by the thought of Hawk wearing one of these ties to work on a later day, becoming distracted in his office thinking of what they had done with them on this night. His mouth twitched up at the corner.
“Hey, are you listening to me?” Hawk placed a hand under his chin and tilted Tim’s face towards Hawk’s own. “This is important, I don’t want to hurt you.”
Tim rolled his wrists and wiggled his fingers to show they were fine. “I’m not made of glass, Hawk, you don’t have to treat me like I’ll break.” Or, Hawk teases a tied-up Tim
♦️ Till I Come Marching Home by Anonymous [G, 3K] Hawk spends his last day before deployment with Tim.
♦️ Please tell me now by @thewindyoubargainedfor | thewindyoubargainedfor [G, 1K] When Marcus arrives in San Francisco, he knows the first thing he needs to do.
♦️ You should be in my space (you should be in my life) by @startagainbuttercup | startagainbuttercup What if Tim let Hawk touch him during their mutual masturbation session? Part 2 of FT Valentine's Month: how do i love thee, let me count the weeks...
♦️ Two Old Men at Grubstake on Pine by @vespersong | vespersong Hannah's story of the two old men at Grubstake Diner, in 1980s San Francisco.
♦️ A Disaster Beyond Measure by drabbleswabbles💠 [NR, 8K, WIP] Hawkins Fuller is a campaign manager with a PR disaster on his hands. The solution involves pretending to date none other than Timothy Laughlin.
Featuring: unrealistic portrayals of the life and job of a campaign manager for the sake of the fake dating trope.
♦️ Again, only better by @madsmeetsmisha | madsmeetsmisha [M, 14K, WIP] Hawk had no idea what was really going on here. All he knew was that he was back in 1954 and a completely distraught Tim was standing outside his door. And he also knew that he certainly wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
♦️ The gold of the dusk and the dawn by @redmyeyes | redmyeyes [M, 3K] Valentine’s Day, 1954
Part 4 of Fellow Travelers
♦️ Stay With Me by Joycee💠 [M, 10K] A week after Hawk goes home from San Francisco, he gets a phone call.
♦️ Down the road, later on, you will hate that I never gave more to you (than half of my heart) by @behindthesefangirleyes | SilverShadow1 [G, 1K] “I lied.”
Hawk isn’t sure what that means or if he’s brave enough to unpack it.
“About what?”
“Same as you,” Lucy says. “About myself.”
Or, Hawk learns about Tim's letter
♦️ psalms 40:2 by @thewindyoubargainedfor | thewindyoubargainedfor [NR, 3K] Tim arrives in his hospital room, and it’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to Roger in weeks.
♦️ Where No One Else Can See by @bluebellsinburbank | ConsumingLove (Bluebellstar) [G, 2K] Marcus once said Hawk was a damn good liar. And the first step in being the best damned liar that ever set foot in Washington, was the necessity of being able to lie to yourself.
Hawk had been lying to himself for so long - about so many things - even he didn't think he would know his own truth if it was laid bare before him.
Until soft brown eyes and a kiss that tasted like milk and eternity.
Until Skippy.
Or, How Tim's touch made Hawk realise a certain fact.
♦️ Sands of Time (Turn Backwards) by @brouill3r | brouiller [NR, 17K, WIP] 1987 Hawkins Fuller is full of regrets for the life he's lived, though Tim once told him he regrets nothing. Hawk so wishes he could say the same.
♦️ A Patchwork Life by @likerealpeopledo-on-ao3 | Likerealpeopledo Hawk spends time in San Francisco after Tim's death in order to keep the promises he made at the gala.
The events take place in canon between Tim's death and Hawk's visit to the quilt in October 1987.

lightning griffin tattoos ft. @blessedcvrsed
the neon of the tattoo parlour sign shone a little too viscerally in the dark eyes that regarded it, her figure unnaturally still for a beat before she finally blinked. the return to conscience brought with it the note that it was moments like this that coined the rumours that bastards were creepy, not entirely human. not that she minded it much — another plate of metal to the armour between her and the general populace — but skulking around the parlour because she was pissed atticus wasn’t working that day to satiate a specific vice was just the littlest bit pathetic. besides, the smattering of tattoos she had collected thus far were starting to border on too many before the canvas of her skin just started to look cluttered. what she could do with was a piercing—
a shadow shifted behind the tinted glass, prompting fallon to drop her crossed arms in a lapse of surprise. it was hard to tell but it did genuinely appear for a moment to have been her own doberman, cerberus, scuttling around inside. was atticus here? when did he pick up cerb? stepping forward, the door opened with a rush that reminded her of her new bobbed haircut by tickling her jaw, catching sight of the doberman as it returned to one of the griffin employees. scoffing to herself, “sorry, i’m being weird. i didn’t just bust up in here to stare at your dog — thought it was mine. i knew atticus wasn’t here today.”
#( threads. )#( ft. seokmin )#hi remember i asked to make people starters slkdfjslk#I HOPE THIS OKAY#i saw the potential connection with their similar doggies#and also fal's love affair for cosmetic pain lmao

good evening nsr community, i went through the ama from today and came back with an armful or two of lore. there’s a bunch more than last time, and i included bbj as well as the npcs. cozy up, check under the cut, and prepare for a long read. enjoy!
today's ama featured wan hazmer and daim dziauddin again, as well as concept artist ellie and animator ben fong.
BUNK BED JUNCTION (FT. DK WEST)
- mayday and zuke live in the sewers because they're an underground band. it's a pun - there were originally two variations of bbj leaving the sewers - one with mayday hi-fiving gigi (which had a 95% chance of happening), and one with zuke awkwardly fumbling and attempting to hi-five gigi (which had a 5% chance) - one of the inspirations for mayday and zuke were the two main characters of samurai champloo (zuke was jin, mayday was mugen) - someone asked about if the rest of the cast had their own shadow puppets. ben suggested a lemur for mayday, while ellie suggested a zucchini for zuke. she may have been joking. - mayday's guitar solos were done by different people, but zuke's drum solos were all done by bruno valverde. - zuke was the one who implemented the canister thing into mayday's guitar. - someone asked who of the cast are the introverts and who are the extroverts. mayday is an extrovert, zuke is an introvert. - the team does have a bit of lore for mayday and zuke and how they met, but they want to save it in case of a future project. - mayday was inspired by both genevieve from company of thieves and the unbreakable kimmy schmidt. - ben did the animation for mayday swinging the hammer in the workshop. - haz recalls seeing some fanart of mayday being brought up as a rich girl. he doesn't remember the artist, but he does like the idea. - the japanese version has zuke say he has a phd rather than a master's degree. this is apparently a mistake. - the pattern on zuke's pants was inspired by jolyne cujoh and prosciutto from jojo's bizarre adventure. - zuke's toilet seat collection came partially from a story from one of the environmental artists where one of their high school friends pranked another friend with a toilet seat. - zuke does a lot of reading and is naturally inquisitive about things like tech and mechanics. - dk west's shadow puppet abilities might run in the family, and zuke may have it as well. - both zuke and dk west are connected by percussion (zuke with the drums, west with the hand claps) - zuke and west weren't always designed to be related -- west was originally designed as "some guy who comes and goes," but was made into zuke's brother later on in production - dk west is an extrovert.
DJ SUBATOMIC SUPERNOVA
- djss' dj name is obviously a stage name, but the team didn't have a real name for him in the script or anything. - haz joked that his name is bob salad. that's not canon but from what i seen the chat loved it lol - haz brings up the symbolism of djss spinning the planets around himself and how it represents that he thinks of himself as the center of the universe. - ellie helped design the districts, and something she noted about dj's is that it's supposed to look the "slummiest" because he cares more about himself and less about things like blackouts. - dj had some lines cut from his boss fight. those lines? mini lectures towards bbj during every phase. they were cut because the team felt like they were too much for the game, but they want to share them one day. - daim says that dj could be either introverted or extroverted becuase of how much time he spends alone looking at the stars. - dj was never planned to have an approach segment, but funk fiction wasn't told that, so he made him an approach theme anyway. - dodo ice pops are traffic light flavoured, which is a popular ice cream in malaysia. it's strawberry, pineapple, and lime flavored.
SAYU AND THE NERD SQUAD
- three of sayu's creators were based on staff members at metronomik. remi (voiced by ben) was based on one of the programmers and one of the environmental artists (ellie calls him "the lovechild of two dudes"), tila was based on (and voiced by) ellie herself, and dodo was based on danish mak (another environmental artist who also voices him). - sofa wasn't based on anyone in particular, he was more of a "general otaku guy" according to ellie (though haz joked that ellie could just say he was based on him). - dodo is daim's favorite npc -- he also designed him! - sayu was ellie's favorite character to design. she loves drawing mermaids. - the progression in sayu's fight where you go deeper into the "ocean" is supposed to be a metaphor for going deeper into the internet/the deep web. - ellie suggested that if sayu were to have a shadow puppet, it would be a cat. - as for the introvert/extrovert debate, daim says sayu is technically comprised of 4 introverts. sayu herself is the extrovert mask they wear. - sayu's ahoge is a submarine periscope. remi looks through it in one of the cutscenes. - sayu's not a mech. she's remotely controlled by her creators from their computer room. - the backstory between remi and tila is meant to show that artists can come from all sorts of backgrounds.
YINU AND MAMA
- yinu's promotional video was one of the first ones done before they brought in lzbros, so it originally looked different from how it looks in the game now. - yinu's mother's eyes are yellow because she spends most of the fight focusing on yinu (who is mainly yellow). when her eyes go blank white, it represents that she's momentarily forgotten what she loves the most. when her eyes become yellow again after the fight, it means she's remembered yinu and her piano playing. - the way ellie describes natura is that yinu is a plant and her mother is very protective of her, and one of the distinctive features is that there are a lot of domes with plants inside, particularly on the roofs of the houses. - yinu's commercial was not intended to reference little miss fortune. the commercial was shown in 2018, while LMF came out a year later. - yinu's mom turning into a giant tree monster isn't exclusive to her just being angry at bbj. apparently the whole plant thing runs in the yinu family.
1010
- 1010's concept as a boy band had been around since before the team started production, but they were the last to be fully designed -- their designs weren't finalized until way later on. - 1010 were ellie’s least favorite characters to design. she doesn't like drawing guys OR robots. - 1010's early designs had them wearing tuxedos. - 1010 do have memories. - the inspiration for the butt plates came from one of ben's gundam figures from his collection in the metronomik office. thanks ben. - ellie's favorite member of 1010 is purl-hew/blue. - eloni/green is apparently the rapper of the group. - the jingle you hear from the carousel in metro division is a carnival remix of 1010's boss theme. - the numbers underneath 1010's names on the autographs are completely random.
NEON J
- neon j is a dancer. daim explains that in addition to being in the navy, dance has always been his true passion. - in the final phase of 1010's fight, he was originally supposed to control the dance moves of the factory as he was fighting you, but it was cut due to limited resources. - daim designed neon j based on ellie's designs for 1010. - neon j's factory's dance moves were all animated by ben -- no mocap needed. the factory was also his favorite thing to animate. - daim says that "neon j is to tatiana as soundwave is to megatron." basically he is extremely loyal to tatiana. - neon j was one of earliest members of nsr. - neon j seeing 1010 as his sons wasn't planned, but daim loves the concept so much that he could see it being canon. - daim says neon j's brain is "probably" still inside the monitor head. somehow. - neon j is an extrovert. - haz likes the idea of neon j being blind and using his sonar to "see" things. ben joked that the screen worked like giant glasses. - neon j originally had red dots that would pop up on his face when the sonar moved by that were meant to represent acne, and that would've been the reason why he's mostly behind the scenes.
EVE
- in mayday's side of the room when eve splits up bbj, the hands all over the walls are meant to be there to show how eve is angrier at mayday than she is at zuke. - the time signature for the music in mayday's room during the fight is 6/8, whereas in zuke's room it's 4/4. - ellie suggested a platypus shadow puppet for eve. the rest of the team seems to be on board. - eve was ben's least favorite character to animate. he said he struggled with animating her dance moves because it was something he'd never done before, and he still doesn't think he did a good enough job. - eve was born with her split skin tone. - apparently eve's near scrapping had something to do with costs. haz was the one who stopped it from happening. - eve's outfit was partly inspired by beyonce, while her jacket was partly inspired by ariana grande. the team took some inspiration from bjork, as well. - the sleeves on eve's jacket were apparently limbs at one point. - eve is an introvert.
NPCS/OTHER CHARACTERS
- part of tatiana's symbolism is how she used to be a rock star, but her flame/passion slowly burned away, and now she's just a rock, referencing how she was literally on fire as the rock star kul fyra, but now looks burnt out. - daim thinks kliff is older than tatiana, probably over 50. - in addition to the neon j dance lore mentioned above, kayane rambling about neon j after the 1010 fight was supposed to be connected to her watching neon j dance. - ben and haz's favorite npc is mia, and ellie's is dj zam. - dj zam was inspired by one of ellie's college friends, who she says "makes you feel comfortable to be around". - ellie thinks dj zam's neck tattoo says "i love mom". - amal the unicorn was inspired by lady amalthea from the 80's animated film "the last unicorn". he was originally written to be a real talking unicorn, but it was changed partially because his horn wasn't in the right spot on his head. - zed was based on game designer dzaid and has hyperacusis, a hearing disorder that makes it difficult to deal with everyday sounds. - yiruk's name is an anagram of kiryu, the protagonist of the yakuza games. - chef sunshine's design is a homage to julia child. she originally had a bigger physique, but was changed to match lylia's bubbly performance.

Training tonight @ 6pm. Don’t be late. You read the incoming text with a grin. Even in text, Suga is straight to the point. Shoving your phone back into your pants pocket, you leave the small kitchenette and head back to your small desk with a fresh cup of coffee in hand. You can still remember the looks of horror on the boys’ faces after Suga announced your immediate hire and it’s been two weeks since then. Was it wrong to take pleasure in their discomfort? Probably. Would you stop? Never.
“Is that a smile I spy on Miss Y/N Y/L/N’s face? The Devil must be here to collect his wife,” Paul exclaims as you sit back down. You laugh and prop your chin on your hand as you stare at him over your desktop screen.
“Can a woman not just be happy, Paul? Why does it have to come at the expense of a man?” you ask, a fake feign of hurt in your voice.
“Of course women can. Just not you,” he says with a shrug of his shoulders. You shake your head, your smile still present on your face. Paul would not ruin your good mood.
“Ouch. That one might have hurt if I actually gave a fuck about your opinion of me,” you say while reorganizing the folders Manager Kim had dropped onto your desk from the day before.
“Y/N! Language!” Laura chides as she walks into your cramped office space. You roll your eyes and flip through the countless papers on your desk to order them in order of priority.
It’s honestly a miracle that none of you manage to murder each other while you work though it’s crossed your mind several times. JM Events and Affairs is a lucrative event planning company, but apparently could not afford to at least place its clerks in a room larger than 500 sq ft. Being entry level is a struggle most days, but eventually it would all pay off and you would become a successful event planning guru. For now though, you’re stuck here with the imbeciles you had to call co-workers.
“Manager Kim wants to see us in her office,” James says as he pokes his head around the wall of the cubicle, his glasses slipping down the bridge of his nose. “Now,” he emphasised. He doesn’t wait for you to follow.
Paul shoots you and Laura a raised brow of confusion as you grab your notepads and file down the long corridor to Manager Kim’s well decorated office. She’s an older woman who’s been in the business longer than you’ve been alive. She credits her success to always staying ahead of the trend even if she didn’t create it, though most times she did. Her style is impeccable and she is meticulous as she is jovial. She’s, quite simply, a genius.
James has already taken a seat in one of the two plush grey chairs in front of her large, industrial sized desk. Rows of colorful binders are organized on her desk - no doubt detailing the new events the company is planning on hosting. Manager Kim enjoys the arts and it’s evident from the variety of paintings that hang on the wall. Today, she’s dressed in a powder blue knit sweater that matches whatever shade of nail polish she wears tucked into a pair of belted, high waisted wide leg pants. Her matching steel toe boots peek from underneath.
“Ah, good. You’re all here,” she begins as she sits behind her desk. You gesture for Laura to take the other available seat as you stand behind James and Paul stands next to you.
“We have a new client considering the company for an event. He’s very important for future networking opportunities so I expect the very best work from you.” Manger Kim usually wasted no time getting straight to the point and today is no different. “In fact, I’ve been monitoring your work very closely because I knew a client like this would be coming very soon,” she stands from her desk, navy blue binder in hand.
“What kind of event is he planning on having?” James inquires, his pen ready to take notes.
“He didn’t give specific details, but I’m sure if we can book him for this minor event, he’ll give us the main one. I’m quite sure of it.” Manager Kim snaps the binder shut and smiles at you all. Her white blonde bob is immaculate, not a single strand out of place.
“Should we start drafting ideas now?” Laura asks.
“Yes, I need several drafts from each of you by 4pm this afternoon. Please have them -”
“Are we just supposed to forget about the other events we have coming up? This guy didn’t even give us any major details for effective planning!” Paul interrupts. Manager Kim turns to look at him.
“Well Paul, if this client is of no importance to you -” Paul tries to backtrack, but to no avail as Manager Kim continues on “- I will not need your drafts or your portfolio.” She beams at him and Paul blanches. You grimace.
“As I was saying. Please have your portfolios and 4 drafts submitted to me by 4pm today. They should be in priority order and include everything from food to colors, entertainment and venues. Remember, the customers knows best -”
“- but finesse, finesse, finesse,” you, Paul, James, and Laura finish. Manager Kim should have that framed and put on her wall.
“Lovely. Goodbye,” she waves no longer looking at you, already lost in her grueling event editing process. You knew better than to loiter and the four of you head back to your small workspace.
“You really fucked up there Paul,” you say as you sit down at your desk.
“Thanks, Y/N,” Paul deadpans. He drops his head quite heavily on his desk. Laura winces.
“It’s okay, Paul. Maybe you can still show her something and -” she starts.
“You know Manager Kim isn’t the forgiving kind,” James interrupts. “There’s nothing more he can do,” he finishes nonchalantly.
“I hate to agree -” you begin.
“No you don’t,” Paul cuts in.
“- but James is right. Manager Kim is all about quick thinking and Paul failed that test. He’ll have another time to redeem himself, but he has to sit this one out. You should be happy, Laura. Less competition,” you say with a shrug and flip open your notepad to start drafting.
“Do you even have an empathetic bone in your body, Y/N?!” Laura hisses as she walks over to rest a hand on Paul’s shoulder.
“Sometimes,” you reply. “But everyone has to eat and I refuse to go to sleep on an empty stomach.”
Laura looks disgusted at your answer and she goes back to consoling Paul. James had left the conversation a long time ago and you admired his ability to ignore almost everyone around him. His coldness and detachment made him ruthless in an unsuspecting way and you’d learned the hard way not to underestimate him. Laura would learn eventually that while people thought it was the strong who survived, it was really those who were able to adapt to any environment that really thrived.
It’s after lunch that you receive an email from Manager Kim requesting for you to meet her in the lobby in fifteen minutes without any further explanation. You ask no questions and sit in the lobby, counting the people that come out of the elevator that were not Manager Kim. It’s already 1:24 pm and you’ve just started your third draft. Creating on a time crunch with no real guidance is no walk in the park and you try to keep your frustrations under control as you run through possible color combinations for the event.
“Y/N! There you are! Let’s go,” Manager Kim calls as she exits the building without checking to see if you follow.
You scramble to grab your purse and notepad, scurrying across the lobby in the high heels she insists you wear. Manager Kim is already seated in a company car as you yank the passenger side door open and fall into the seat.
“Very good,” she says and wastes no time pulling into traffic. You awkwardly try to secure your seatbelt as she zips through the small spaces between cars. Gods protect you from this woman and her hazardous driving.
“Where are we going?” you ask after you manage to situate your purse, coat, and notepad in your lap comfortably.
“Downtown. We’re meeting with the client.”
“We?!” you repeat, surprised.
“That’s what I said isn’t it? We’re also late,” she says as she makes a sharp right turn onto Matthews St. You barely miss hitting a cyclist and you send up another small prayer for you to make it to your destination safely.
“What about the drafts and portfolios? Aren’t you going to review -”
“Did I say I wasn’t?” She glances over at you from the corner of her eye and you close your mouth. You would not fail this test.
Manager Kim pulls over into an impossibly tight space in front of a large corporate building that reads Hastings and Lewis. A well established law firm if you remember correctly. It has to be at least 14 stories high and exudes the architect’s vision of simple modern design with large windows and exposed steel structural support. You both exit the car and you align your steps with hers, your heels clicking in time against the marble flooring as you enter the building. You say good afternoon to the doorman who simply nods at you in greeting.
“Hello. How can I help you?” the receptionist asks behind the raised desk, her head barely visible.
“Yes, hello. My name is Madeline Kim. I have an appointment to speak with Mr. Cavallero at 2:15pm.” You glance at the clock behind the receptionist. 1:53pm. You bite your lip to hold your outburst. To be early is to be on time, you could hear her say.
The receptionist smiles and nods as she searches her computer for the appointment. “Yes, here it is. Please have a seat. Someone will come and get you shortly.”
Manager Kim nods and perches in one of the available seats. You shake your head as you take a seat next to her, ignoring the itching in your palm to pull out your notepad and finish your drafts. You can tell by the way Manager Kim is sitting, not scrolling through her various binders or the calendar on her phone, this is a formal interview and you would not be the one to fuck it up. There would be time to finish the drafts. You would make sure of it.
“Ms. Kim?” A young man in a sharp, black suit stands in the center of the room smiling at you. 2:05pm. Right on time. “If you could follow me this way, please.” He turns towards the golden elevators and you follow behind him. “My name is Lewis Carlisle and I am the assistant to Mr. Cavallero,” he tells you as he pushes the button for the 10th floor. He sticks his hand out for each of you to shake.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Mr. Carlisle. Thank you for having us. This is my assistant, Ms. Amani Jung.” A lie, but you go with it.
“A pleasure to meet you,” you say with a bright smile and a firm handshake. He returns a smile of his own.
The elevator doors open and you follow Mr. Carlisle through the open workspace plan. This is the kind of place that promoted collaboration and teamwork. How could it not when the light airy feeling made you want to turn to your neighbor and ask them what they thought about a particular problem? JM Events and Affairs should have hired their interior designer. Maybe some of their employees wouldn’t struggle as much to meet their deadlines.
“Mr. Cavellero unfortunately will not be able to meet with you in person today -” Manager Kim’s smile tightens at his words “- but he did relay all of his expectations for the company brunch,” Lewis says as he holds open the door to a small meeting room. It’s in the center of the floor and the walls are made of pure plexiglass. It screamed expensive.
“How wonderful,” Manager Kim comments as she sits down and sets her purse down on the ground.
“Would either of you like something to drink? Water? A Coke?”
“ A water with light ice will do, thank you,” she says.
“I’ll take a bottle of water, please,” you reply and sit down beside Madeline. You discreetly pull out your design notepad along with your actual note-taking pad. Lewis nods and promises to return quickly with your drinks as well as the file containing the event details.
“You seem upset,” you comment while scribbling down the words brunch and law firm onto a new blank sheet for your fourth and final draft, your brain already conjuring up ideas.
“What makes you think that?” she asks, turning to you slightly as she too sets up her own note-taking station.
“Your smile failed to meet your eyes,” you say nonchalantly. From the corner of your eye, you see her break into a grin as Lewis enters the room, a cup of water in one hand, a bottle in the other, and a slim manilla folder tucked underneath his arm.
“Thank you again, Mr. Carlisle,” Manager Kim says with another bright smile, her hand in his as they shake hands again.
“You’re very welcome. I’m sure Mr. Cavallero will love what you put together for brunch,” he replies.
The meeting seems to be a success and you’d gained some much needed insight for your fourth draft while being Madeline’s “assistant”. You’re no longer paying attention as you exit the meeting room and head back towards the main elevator, Madeline and Lewis making polite conversation. You run over all of your drafts as you check the time discreetly. It’s 3:20pm. You would still have enough time to review your plans and work on the others files Manager Kim had assigned. You grin in victory.
“Mr. Cavallero!” Lewis exclaims as the elevator doors open.
The man is an older gentleman with neatly groomed hair and warm brown eyes. His coal grey suit is neatly pressed, a sharp crease present in the center of his pant leg. Definitely high quality and only dry-cleaned. His smile displays a set of perfect of white teeth. As he steps out of the elevator, holding it open so it wouldn’t close, the Armani Exchange watch glitters under the artificial lights.
“Mr. Carlisle. I assume this must be our event coordinators. I’m sorry I couldn’t meet with you. An emergency meeting was called for a major case,” he apologizes.
“I understand, Mr. Cavallero. Things are sometimes out of our control. No need to explain,” Madeline says with a smile as she enters the elevator. You follow behind her. “Mr. Carlisle was quite capable. I will have Miss Y/L/N send over the final details for the event by Friday for your approval.”
Mr. Cavallero’s eyes shift over to you and he smiles. “I look forward to it. Enjoy the rest of your day, ladies.” He let the doors go as Lewis tells you goodbye, the doors closing off the last of his words.
Manager Kim’s shoulders visibly relax as you descend to the lobby, but you make no comment. Though their conversation was brief, something had clearly transpired between them. Madeline seems to have noticed you watching her as she inhales and fixes her posture. She was back to business.
“I assume I don’t have to tell you not to say anything about this meeting?” she asks as she nods her thanks to the doorman, your steps once more in sync as you exit the high rise building.
“What meeting?” You say with a grin as you wait for her to unlock the company car.
The heat of the staircase in Spiral welcomes you again like a familiar friend after not seeing them for a long time. There is still the hustle and bustle of vendors dropping off boxes as the final details of the new designs are being put into place. People couldn’t wait to see how Spiral had fared after the robbery - which you still didn’t believe was actually what happened - and it seems like Friday’s opening night couldn’t come soon enough. Even Paul and Laura were considering stopping by after all of the shit they talked before.
You enter the main space and glance around, looking for one of the boys. Your purse bag is heavy from the event files and you head over to set it on top of the bar while resting your aching feet. Paul, Laura, and James could not believe you’d managed to turn in your drafts and portfolio at exactly 3:57pm after being gone so long; they would eventually learn to not underestimate you. You glance around again and notice a group of people sitting in one of the newly upholstered booths quietly chatting to one another across the way. Were these the new employees?
“Already lounging on the first day of the job, Y/L/N?”
You look to your left as you shrug off your heavy overcoat and see Honcho coming around the bar, a pile of clothes in his hands.
“Of course not. I just wasn’t sure who to report to,” you say with a shrug.
“Well, you’re looking at him,” he replies with a grin. You have to stop your mouth from falling open. Of all people, it had to be him? “What? Are you disappointed?” he asks as he continues across the room to the small group. You grab your stuff and walk over after him.
“No, I just thought -”
“Thought it would be Suga? As much as you like to charge in and demand shit sweetheart, Suga is a very busy man and doesn’t have the time to appease you all the time. Sit,” he commands with a jerk of his head. You narrow your eyes at him, but obey. It’s only then that you notice the other five persons staring at you in confusion as you bickered. You swallow the urge to huff in annoyance as Honcho begins speaking.
“Thank you all for being on time. Congratulations on being hired. I’m Honcho and I’ll be your manager at Spiral. You’ll meet the rest of the guys later. These are your uniforms. We have a strict adherence uniform policy, so please do your best to be dressed in your proper attire. If you have long hair, it will be tied up or back in a bun or ponytail. Ladies, we ask that you wear red lipstick to match our colors. We’ve also given you options for bottoms: a skirt or pants.” Honcho holds up a pair of each for demonstration. “Whatever you decide to wear is up to you. We only ask that all your shoes are closed toed and we would prefer no sneakers; we’re trying to sell a vibe here. Any questions?” He doesn’t wait for anyone to speak up. “No? Great. If you could introduce yourselves to each other, that’d be fantastic.” He looks over to the boy on the other side of the booth.
“Uh, hi. My name is Micah. I’m 21 and recently graduated from college.” He tosses up a small wave before pushing his glasses further up his nose. He’s narrow shouldered and naturally blonde. Cute, if you will. They would chew him up and eat him alive if he continued to be so timid.
“Hey, I’m Luca. I’m 23 and a graduate student at Oberman.” Luca definitely fit the vibe Spiral os going for with his dark hair and dark eyes. He would have no problem wooing the numerous women who would walk through the door. A great business move in your opinion.
“Hey y’all, Savannah here. I’m 22 and working part time while in school.” Another blonde hair, blue-eyed coworker. How fun. The bubbles in champagne had nothing on her as she beams at the rest of you around the table.
“I’m Jack. I’m 24 and I guess I’m here to save up for a new car? Need some extra cash,” he finishes with a bashful grin. The girl next to you snorts. Jack is a big man with broad shoulders and you would assume he was hired as additional security based on his size. Imagine a man as big as him bringing over your strawberry mojito? Exactly.
“Giselle. 21. Law student. Loans have to pay themself off somehow right?” Luca laughs and Giselle smiles. Yuck. If you weren’t already sick of the office romance - if you could call it that - between Laura and Paul at JM, you were going to have to endure another one here? Gods be with you.
“Y/N Y/L/N. I’m 22 and an event planner,” you say nonchalantly and turn to Honcho, waiting for his next instructions.
“Not going to tell us the reason you’re here?” he smirks and you roll your eyes.
“You’d like that wouldn’t you?”
“I’d like a lot of things, Y/L/N. In fact, I can think of a few -”
“Gross,” you say, interrupting him, your face turned down in disgust. He laughs.
“Always think someone wants something from you, huh?” He shakes his head, still chuckling. “Everyone, go get changed and I’ll explain your duties to you once you get back.”
The six of you ease out of the booth, grabbing your uniforms as you head to the restrooms to get changed. As you follow Savannah and Giselle, you can’t help but scan the hallway for anything you could have missed as the memory of your second night here flashed across your mind. There had to be something that you were missing.
“I hope these uniforms are cute,” Giselle grumbles as she steps into an empty stall.
“I’m sure it’ll look great,” Savannah chirps.
You step into your own individual stall and drop your stuff on the floor. Slipping out of your heels, you step out of your slacks and tug off your blouse. You hold up the uniform shirt. It’s a plain black t-shirt with the letters in red spelling out Spiral in a spiral formation. The pants are made of a faux leather shiny material. They look tight and the sides have cut outs with strings laced in them from hip to ankle. The skirt is exactly the same. You sigh. This was really the vibe?
You dress quickly and tug on your Doc Martens. Honcho would have to wait for the lipstick. Exiting the stall, you see Savannah trying to adjust the strings on her pants while chewing her lip.
“Is it supposed to be this exposed?” she asks, checking herself out in the mirror.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure,” Giselle says exiting the stall and tugging down the hem of her skirt.
“So much for equality in the workplace huh?” you say. The two of them laugh.
The three of you return to the main space, Micah, Luca, and Jack already back at the booth with Honcho. Their eyes widen when they see you.
“Looking good ladies,” Honcho calls with his traditional large grin. Of course he would comment.
“Yeah, yeah. What’s next?” Giselle asks as she wiggles her way back into the booth, trying to cover her modesty.
“We’re going to take a tour of the facilities, get you acquainted with the space, and fill out the last pieces of paperwork. We’ll also have you help with some of the decorations; don’t worry, you’re going to get paid for this session. Then, we’ll see you on Friday for your shifts,” he replies. “Alright, let’s go.”
Again, he doesn’t wait for you to follow. As you’re setting your belongings down to catch up with the rest of the group, you spot Jin heading towards the bar. Just the man who you needed to see.
“Are you coming Y/N?” Savannah calls to you as the group heads up to the second level.
“Yeah, I’ll be right there!” you lie, knowing damn well you’re going to ambush Jin. You pretend to search for something in your purse as you double-check the group is far enough on the second level to not notice you not following before you head over to Jin.
“Well hello Jin,” you say as you wiggle your way onto a bar stool.
“Y/N,” he says with a chuckle. “What can I do for you?”
“Just answer a few simple questions.” you smile as you rest your chin on your palm.
“Alright,” he replied skeptically.
“Where’d you move the body?” The bottle of Aperol nearly slips out of his grip as he turns to look at you.
“Excuse me?” There’s no laughter in his voice.
“The body of the man in the bathroom,” you clarify. “How’d you get it to disappear like that?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he replies, busying himself with stocking up the bottles of alcohol under the shelf. He won’t meet your eyes. You know he’s lying; his body language says it all.
“Oh come on, Jin. You can tell me. It’s not like I’m going to go to the cops or anything,” you say nonchalantly. “Clearly they didn’t seem to care since they weren’t that thorough with their questions.”
“Y/N, I really don’t know what you’re talking about. You were concussed remember? Maybe you imagined whoever you’re talking about.” He glances up at you. You roll your eyes.
“Really Jin? You’re going to use the concussion line on me? You knew that I shot him; I told you that. I just want to know where you put him and why there were no reports of a missing man from the incident on the news at all,” you say with a shrug. He finally turns to face you.
“Maybe nobody reported him missing. Maybe he slipped out after you ducked behind the bar. What does it matter? Look, it was a traumatic night. For all of us. I don’t know anything about whatever or whoever you’re talking about. Hell, you probably don’t know either. Please, don’t make this working relationship anymore difficult for yourself than it already is. Just come in, keep your head down, and head out.” His hands are splayed out on the bar and the distance between you has closed significantly from when he’d started talking as he stares you down. “Worry about the things that concern you, like repaying your debt.” His tone is sharp and final. There’s no friendliness in his face either.
“Y/L/N! You’re not getting paid to sit on that pretty little ass of yours. Get up here now!” Honcho yelles down to you over the railing of the second floor balcony.
Ignoring Honcho, you cock your head and look at Jin again, thinking. “Okay Jin. Heard you loud and clear.”
You hop off the bar stool and adjust your skirt. You say nothing further as you head upstairs. It seems as though Jin would be of no help to you, but honestly, it didn’t matter. If it didn’t concern you, why was Jin lying about knowing what man you were talking about? Why had Suga tried to discreetly cover up that paper in his office the other day? What was really going on at Spiral? You’re determined to figure it, even if you have to work extra hours to do it. What happens in the dark must eventually come to light.

to be invited in
yennefer/geralt, regis pov ft. jaskier and addams family adjacent shenanigans
The unimaginative and ignorant who happen upon the place may come away with the impression that the bizarre furnishing and eclectic collections are solely inspired by the whims of the backwards sorceress who has captured Geralt’s heart. Yennefer has always been strange and rebellious and disdainful of common decency, tending toward the macabre and grimey and salacious. Her home artfully reflects that, teeming with objects of frightful and ensorcelled natures, brimming with clutter seeming better suited to a seedy alchemist’s shop than a humble family home.
Among the jars of slugs and glowing potion bottles and gleaming crystals though, there are gathered numerous bits and bobs and pieces of the ever-widening collection of a lifelong, wandering forager suddenly turned homebody for the first time in his life. From dried bouquets of flowers to bright red mushrooms preserved behind glass to feathers and bones and sharpened teeth and of course, weaving among it all, the living menagerie.
Rats and cats and grinkles and sauerblats and toadhankies and postuloons and vertigrabes. Little pets that chitter and hiss from the corners, and others that squeak and groan from a distance. Scratch marks across the peeling, floral wallpaper. Heavy cobwebs decorating the corners and crevices, here and there clustered with bejeweled spiders. A single, massive eyeball visible through a propped open trapdoor that opens to the basement.
Likewise, the eyes of the assortment of portraits hung on the walls follow Regis and the poet down the halls. Some of the portraits have very many eyes indeed.

“hey, y/n?” patty calls as she walks into the kitchen. you look up from your phone with a raised eyebrow, “you’ve got another table.”
“are you serious?” you huff, hopping down from your perch. “how many?”
“two,” she responds with a wink which can never be good. “cheer up. it’s your last one and then you don’t have to come back for two days.”
she leaves with a shrug as you sigh, grabbing two coasters and two sets of utensils. you push through the door and walk towards where she points, rolling your eyes when you hear a familiar laugh. you drop the coasters in front of the two boys and reach for your notepad, “so, patronizing me at home isn’t enough for you, dan? you have to come and do it at my job too?”
you look at your twin who has a shit eating grin. your eyes flick to the boy with him and you send him a genuine smile, “hi owen.”
“hi y/n,” he blushes and your eyes shoot to your feet. danny must’ve not been paying attention when he flushed because he would’ve called him out on it, but he didn’t. “how’s your day been?”
“it’s been good. thanks for asking,” you send him a wink and he bites his lip, turning his head to look out the window. “what are we drinking tonight?”
“water,” danny says and owen says the same. you click your pen and go back to the kitchen. you lean against the sink and sigh.
their time as teammates was over, but their time as best friends wasn’t. when you’d gone to visit danny for a weekend in january, you and owen actually hung out for the first time. when one thing led to another, you ended up in bed together and afterwards you couldn’t stop talking on the phone with each other. you officially put a label on it soon after you flew home and agreed to keep it a secret from your brother. now, you weren’t really trying to hide it, but danny was just oblivious to his surroundings sometimes. or he just didn’t care.
you grab two glasses and fill them with ice before filling them with water and going back out. you sit them on the table with a promise of returning before going to your other table, the third to last one in the place. you collect your money before going back over to your boys. owen was alone this time and you took the opportunity to stand closer to him.
“so what’s the plan for tonight?” you mumble just in case danny decided to return.
“danny was talking about a movie night or something?” he says, sitting his phone down and looking up at you with adoration in his eyes. “i’m sorry i couldn’t talk much today. danny’s been keeping me busy.”
“it’s fine,” you reach out and run a hand over his arm, letting his hand wrap around yours. “but i was talking about after the movie. what’s gonna happen then?”
he ducks his head and blushes again. before he can answer, you see danny round the corner on his phone. with a final squeeze you drop his hand move back, “so what are you boys gonna be eating tonight?”
-
an hour later patty dismissed you to go home and you were relieved. the boys waited for you to clock out before you walked to your cars. owen rode with danny to stop by redbox while you drove straight home. your parents were already asleep when you arrived and you knew addison was gone on vacation with one of her friends so the house was quiet.
you hang your keys on the hook and head upstairs. you shut your door behind you and sigh. you look at your bed and smile, catching sight of the owen sized indentation left over from the night before. you plug your phone in before going into your bathroom and stripping off your clothes for a shower.
after stepping out and drying off, you pull on some old sleep shorts and a loose long sleeve that belonged to danny at one point but you claimed it shortly after he’d left for his first year in the program. you pull your hair into a ponytail before grabbing your phone off the charger and going downstairs.
the boys are in the kitchen digging through the pantry and are startled when you speak up, “popcorn’s by the fridge. we’ve been over this.”
your hand brushes against owen’s hip as you nudge past him towards the cabinet. you grab the box and sit it on the counter, “i’m calling dibs on dad’s chair.”
“good because i got dibs on the couch. if i fall asleep, don’t wake me up. i’ve had a day,” danny huffs and you and owen send a glance towards each other.
“he got beat in golf and he’s been sour about it since,” owen explains and you nod, giggling when danny protests. you grab yourself a drink and go into the living room, grabbing a blanket as well. you sit your phone on the arm rest before putting up the chair to prop up your legs. danny brings you some popcorn in a bowl and starts setting up the movie they had chosen.
the movies not fifteen minutes in before you hear a snore from the couch. you look over towards your brother before looking at your boyfriend who was scrolling through something on his phone. you smirk and quietly put the chair down. you slip into his lap and snatching his phone out of his hand, setting it down on the coffee table.
“what are you-” you cut him off by shaking your head and leaning down to press your lips to his. he pulls back after a second and looks worriedly at danny.
“he’s a heavy sleeper, o. besides, i want you,” you move your hips over his blanket covered lap and smirk down at the bespectacled boy, “and it seems like you want me too.”
you groans as you lean back down to kiss him again. his hands come to rest on your hips as yours slip under his shirt. you make out for a minute you scoot down his body. he looks at you worriedly, “he’s right there y/n!”
“i’m trying not to think about my brother as i’m about to blow you, owen.” you sigh, before looking at him seriously, “if you’re really that uncomfortable, we can go up to my room, but i can’t guarantee i’ll still be in the mood.”
you can practically see the wheels in his head turning. he knew a blowjob from you was a rare occurrence because it wasn’t really your vibe. you watch as he sighs defeatedly, “if he wakes up-”
“then i’ll take the blame because i wanted to please my boyfriend. happy?” you ask, pulling on the waistband of his sweats that he’d changed into. a burst of adrenaline shoots through you as you pull his dick out and place a kiss at the top.
you pump him a couple of times before finally engulfing him in your mouth, looking up just in time to see him throw his head back against the pillow and let out the softest moan. his hand rested on your head as you began to bob, taking more of him each time. you make your way down to the base and your throat clenches, causing him to let out a loud groan. your eyes widen and you pull off with a pop, glancing at your brother who hasn’t moved an inch. “i know it feels good, but you need to be quiet.”
you take him all the way down and he mumbles out a broken, “baby.”
you suckle on his tip for little before he pulls on your ponytail, indicating his release was near. his hips start thrusting shallowly and his cock twitches before he’s shooting his load down your throat. he pulls you off and lets you swallow before pulling you down in a hot kiss.
you pull his pants back up to cover him and send him a sly smirk, “see, o, that wasn’t so bad.”
“that’s the most reckless thing i’ve ever done,” he says, breathing heavily as you press kisses to his neck, “and holy shit do i want to do it again.”

Making-Over vs. Making-Do - To Be or Not To Be (X-Men fanfiction)
Written in part by the loverly @supesofherown, who has offered me much inspiration for this particular X-Men snippet, ft. the one and only Remy LeBeau and some...other...weird mutant.
Whether the entire story will be written remains to be seen. But I did want to map out at least the introductory scene, see what it looked like in my mind and all that.
On the corner of two busy streets, where traffic was heavy and to walk there was a constant struggle of hugging the sidewalk so as not to collide with a speeding car, someone had decided to set up a small antique shop. It was bursting with little trinkets, many of which were on display behind smudged window-glass. There were a few rusted toy cars, a typewriter with some of the keys stuck, mismatched earrings, a stack of dusty books, and a few wall decorations (styled as late-1900’s-advertisments) among many other curious objects. However, out of all the oddities which this corner store boasted, there was only one which demanded attention. It was a necklace, and it was a fine piece of work, indeed. When sunlight hit the window just so, after working its way past car windows and weaving between the mobs of pedestrians, the necklace would glitter as if it were made of the purest gold. A few small gems would wink at passers-by from where they rested against the velvet blue neck of the display bust. It seemed to be calling out, to every person that passed:
“Pick me! Take me home!”
And there was one who certainly heard that call.
He had been eyeing the necklace for a few weeks, now, ever since he first saw it on his way to a sandwich shop further down the block. Whenever he passed by the smudged window, he would pause and look in, just to assure himself that no one else had purchased it yet. Every time he saw it, the same thought shivered its way down his spine and made his fingers tingle and his mouth crinkle.
“Rogue would love ‘dat.”
And why, indeed, wouldn’t she? Remy LeBeau didn’t know her inside-out, but that necklace had been made for her. He knew it.
Of course, in addition to being Rogue’s closest friend and a runner-up for the newly-assembled team of mutants known as X-Men, Remy was also an expert thief. If he’d wanted to, the necklace would have been in his pocket and back at the mansion the first time he set eyes on it. But it was one thing to give a gift, and another to steal it…at least, there was a difference when it came to Rogue.
Today he idled a little longer than usual outside the shop, peering at the necklace and trying to gauge the price. He would have felt better if this were a pawn shop, but he doubted he had enough on him to buy such an extravagant item. Someone at the school might be willing to lend a little cash, but Remy hated the thought of asking such a favor. If he wanted to get Rogue a gift so badly, he would do it himself, just like he did everything else. He could go inside and ask…but that would mean facing the possibility of embarrassment if the price was too high, and he wanted to avoid that scenario at all costs.
Today, though, Remy was not alone by the shop. An elderly man stooped on the front steps, rattling a pewter cup against the side of the wall as people stepped past. No one paid him any heed; he was just one more matted, filthy bit of pavement decoration, not worth the time nor the attention. Remy would’ve done the same, and was just tucking his hands into his pockets, ready to mingle with a passing crowd, when the man called out him.
“Eh! Boy! Got something to spare for an old friend?”
Remy paused. “I don’t usually carry anyt’ing on me, sorry.”
“Aaaah!” The man winked at him with one milky-blue eye. “’Usually’ bein’ the operative word there.” He motioned with the cup, “And did I ask for money? No…no..” his words died into a mumble and he rocked himself back-and-forth on the step. He looked up, saw Remy again, and his expression split into a wide smile, showing gaps where his teeth were missing. “Come here, Boy. There’s one thing you can give an old friend.”
Despite himself, Remy was intrigued. He lingered by the window. “Yeah? And what would that be, ‘mon vieil ami’?”
The old man laughed; it rattled about in his throat like the cup against the wall. “You can give me a story, Boy. Everyone’s got one of those.” He looked at him through one eye, the other still closed in his wink. “Tell me a story about that necklace.”
Remy’s gaze darted to the window, then back to the man. “Not’ing t’ say. It’s just a necklace.”
“Aaaah…but a special kind of necklace. Not buying it for yourself, are you?”
“As entertainin’ as that notion might be…yer right.” Remy leaned against the window. What were a few more smudges? He’d already fogged up the glass by standing too close to the pane. “And I’m not buyin’ it, anyhow.”
The man chortled. “You don’t have to tell me, Boy, I’ve figured it out already. There’s some special lady…hmmm? Such a cliché story…but I can’t help myself liking it.” He wriggled excitedly under his ragged clothing. The coat draped about his shoulders was far too large to begin with, dwarfing his rickety frame.
“You guessed it,” Remy admitted. “But I can’t afford it.”
“Oh, oh. That’s a shame.” The man shook his head and made a “tsk, tsk” sound that hissed between the gaps in his teeth. “Would’a looked lovely on the girl, I’m sure.”
Remy nodded absently. He might have ended the conversation there, but something moved him to keep talking, to get what had gone unsaid off his chest:
“There’s a lot I wish I could do for her. Jus’ a few fancy trinkets, maybe…a necklace like ‘dat and a dinner at a fancy restaurant…”
A better family, he might have added. A more appealing personal history, a more stable friend…someone she might be able to envision “forever” with…
“We always want to give away something we don’t have,” the man sighed. He peered into his empty cup as he spoke. “Always so ready to make a change, thinkin’ it’ll make the world better for it.” He looked up at Remy with both eyes, one a milky blue, the other finally open so its dark hue, either brown or black, could be seen. “Speaking of change…” he extended the empty cup, “How’s about something for me to remember you by? A little ‘good-bye’ present.”
Remy slipped one hand into his pants’ pocket, pulling out a few bills and stuffing them into the cup. He knew what life on the street was like, had favored it and enjoyed it, but it was harsh. Many were the days he’d wanted a little extra help and had gotten none.
“Afternoon,” he murmured. Then he turned to go, thinking the exchange over. He did not expect the visceral grip around his wrist.
“Wait!” The old man bobbed up in front of him, pulling back his flabby lips and making his eyes wrinkled up in an attempted smile. “I’ll do it.”
Remy blinked. “Do…what?”
“You’ve given me an abundance today: first the story, then the money.” He pulled Remy away from the shop, towards a little turn as the sidewalk reached the corner and branched off in several directions. “Now I’ll return the favor. Friend-to-friend, eh, Boy?”
Remy tried working his hand from the bony grasp, meaning to explain that he didn’t need anything, he was fine, and it really wasn’t a big deal. But the man wouldn’t let go. His grip was like a talon, and his stride surprisingly quick, so Remy had to stumble along behind him to keep from falling on his face. They rounded the corner and Remy found himself in a dead-end alley, quite deserted and surrounded on both sides by smooth, stone walls. At this time of day, streets crawled with activity and sound…but even the sunlight seemed to have overlooked this particular spot.
“Where in ‘da world..?” He looked over his shoulder, but the busty intersection they had just left had vanished into thin air.
“They always know what they want without ever asking the other,” the man mumbled to himself as he hobbled along. He moved with uneven steps, making him sway to-and-fro. “It makes me laugh. Isn’t it funny how they always know?”
Remy reached into his coat, feeling along the inside jacket for his deck of cards. He grabbed a few – three was more than enough – and filtered a bit of energy into them, just enough to throw this weirdo off his guard. Before he could flick them into the man’s face, the other stopped, spun around, and snatched the cards from Remy’s fingers.
“Now, now,” he said with a shake of his head, “that looks a bit dangerous to me. Better not have any explosives for the wish grantin’, should we? Don’t want to hurt anyone.” As he spoke, the man took one of the glowing cards and rubbed it between his fingers. It crumbled under his touch, turning into a spray of white dust that he blew from his hand and into the air. “That’s better.”
Remy was stunned into silence, a rare accomplishment. So stunned was he that, when the elderly man tugged off his coat and wrapped it around himself, he couldn’t react until after his coat had been effectively stolen.
“He-HEY! What’s the big idea?!” Remy launched himself forward. Mutant or no, this hobo was about to learn why it was never a good idea to steal something from a thief.
The other’s response was to raise his hand in the air, as if to ward off an oncoming blow, and Remy found himself frozen in mid-leap. His limbs were held in place by some unseen force, and his body hung just above the ground. The elderly man looked up at him, hand still splayed in the air, the other shuffling through Remy’s card collection.
“Now…” he muttered, “it was so much easier when the only options people had were three different types of carriages…or bareback.” He held one of the cards up to Remy, “Does this look like a car you wouldn’t drive?”
Remy blinked. The image on the card, rather than a clump of spades, diamonds, hearts, or any normal arrangement one would find on a playing card, had been transformed into the image of a sports car. He opened his mouth to respond, trying to think of an appropriate response to any one of the numerous things currently happening. But the elderly man didn’t wait for him to speak, choosing instead to flick the card behind him and draw another one. A different car appeared on its face.
“What about this one?”
He continued in this way for several more seconds, progressing through a series of extravagant and expensive items, ranging from cars to furniture to suits. Remy was silent through the whole ordeal, partially due to the shock of it all, partially because the other wouldn’t offer him enough time to get a word in edgewise. For as he went, he would mumble to himself between cards, engaged in an intense, one-sided conversation.
“They always think they know…helping those who help themselves, my foot…Just pick the things that aren’t like him…What wouldn’t he choose, yes, yes…only the things he wouldn’t…”
When the last card had been tossed to the wind, the old man drew near to Remy, stepping around the cards strewn about the pavement.
“I don’t know who you are or watch’a want,” Remy ground between his teeth, “But yer gonna regret it.”
The old man didn’t respond at first, only stared up at him with those multicolored eyes. They were old eyes, filled with a distant pain that reached beyond Remy and the dark street.
“Shush, now. No talking. I have to think.”
He smiled a bit. It was wrinkled grimace of smile that twisted his face in all the wrong ways.
“Has anyone ever told you that change is painful, Boy?” He placed one hand against Remy’s chest as he spoke, and the other he rested against his forehead. “Because if they have…they had the right idea.”
He closed his eyes, curling in on himself, letting a breath of air escape his lips. Then he threw himself back, arching and twisting his body, though his hands remained fixed on Remy’s chest and head.
There was a blinding light, a rush of sound, and then…nothing.
Outside the little alleyway, people continued along their respective routes, mixing with mobs of like-minded peers. A gold necklace winked at strangers in the window of a tiny antique store, and an empty tin cup rested on the steps by the shop’s front door.

kim seokjin: lost in translation.
Pairing: kim seokjin x reader. ft. kim namjoon.
Summary: due to unfortunate timing and some out of context eavesdropping, roommates Seokjin and Y/N have been forced into a constant push and pull of thinking they've both been put in the friend zone by the other. So while Y/N takes out her obvious feelings of sexual and emotional frustration by searching for something to keep her busy, Seokjin instead festers in his own pettiness with an extra side of bitter while they both continue to be the close friends they are. But apparently Y/N finding her distraction in Kim Namjoon was the final straw and every word lost in translation suddenly begins to make sense.
Genre: roomate!au, smut, angst, sarcasm, seokjin at the height of his passive aggressiveness.
Word count: 9+k
a/n: this took me like 5+ months to write after I basically forgot about it, but here it is, my first ever completed smut. are you allowed to dedicate this to people? because if so, can I dedicate it to @tayegi who I feel like is the majority of kpop smut writers inspiration and guide in this crazy world.
"You're both fucking ridiculous."
Your neck ached with the momentum it carried as it snapped up in the direction of the overly bitter statement, eyes wide and lips parting in disbelief. Your usually well tempered and calm to a fault roommate Seokjin had just said quite possibly the most aggressive thing you had ever heard pass through those pillow-like lips.
Your mind spun as you blinked, completely taken off guard. "I'm sorry, what?"
He simply scoffed, taking a long swig from the drink that swirled within his glass, usually caramel warm gaze fathomlessly dark as he continued to take in the scene before him. "You and Namjoon, it's ridiculous! You either need to fuck or stop looking at each other like you want to."
"I- what- no!" You started to stutter and fumble, your slightly intoxicated brain running at the speed of light as you attempted to assemble your thoughts back into order. Were your intentions that obvious? So much so that even your most oblivious of roommates could pick up on it? You thought you were being subtle enough, only glancing over in the strawberry blonde man's direction from your spot on the opposite side of the raucous club every other minute. But apparently your efforts were null and you were caught, not that you were going to let Jin know that. "I don't know what you're talking about Jin."
"I'm talking about how you've been undressing poor Joonie with your eyes for the past half an hour and it's fucking nauseating. Fuck or fucking move on."
Again you were utterly flabbergasted. Okay, maybe you had been making the eyes at Namjoon who you had been intensely flirting with for the past week or so (and who you quite possibly had wanted to bed for longer then that because holy shit how is it legal for someone to be that adorable and that hot all once?) So maybe yes, you weren't being the most discreet person in the world with your intentions but that in no way gave Jin any right to point it out.
Jin had been your roommate for almost three semesters now after a glitch in the system had paired you guys together and by the time the error was realised all other dorms had been taken. At the beginning it had been awkward to say the least, both of you fumbling around each other, remaining fully dressed in common areas at all time, and stuttering apologies whenever you bumped into each other in the tiny kitchen you shared.
Months later there was no awkwardness to speak of. After moving past the initial discomfort of living with someone of the opposite sex and quickly realising that you had a shit ton in common you became increasingly comfortable around each other, some might say even too comfortable. Now you would purposefully jab elbows into each other as you both cooked and no longer had to change in the bathroom when you now strutted past each other in towels with no shame at all. Jin was kind and funny and all around just quite possibly the most genuine person you had ever met. Which was why his current behaviour was that much more confusing.
You took a large gulp of your gin and tonic to hide the pink haze that now coated your cheeks as you attempted to retain at least a fraction of your pride that your roommate was currently digging his patten leather Chelsea boots into. "Whatever Jin, I can look as much as I want. Looking is not a crime."
"But making me choke on your guys' sexual tension is." He stated, tone something balancing between irritation and something you couldn’t quite make out that might have been just further irritation. "But whatever, don't fuck, it doesn't matter to me. Though you'd probably be dodging a bullet, I heard that his size doesn't translate if you get my drift."
You actually choked, spluttering a cough as your eyes widened to saucers and you were quickly sipping up a hand to slap it across Jin's bicep. "What the fuck Jin! You don't just go around saying shit like that!"
He simply shrugged, undeterred. "I only speak the truth and we both know it. Tell me Namjoon doesn't look like he has a small dick. It'd probably take him hours to get you off."
Your ears were burning at this point, pushing past the original shock you once felt towards your usually passive friend's completely 180 shift in personality to now becoming increasingly irritated. "For your information, I have it on good authority that his dick is quite sizable thank you very much."
"Whose good authority?" He challenged, gaze becoming increasingly darkening as he pinned you down with it.
"Mine," You retaliated, not having the time to bite your tongue out like you now wanted to do as the word passed your lips. Fuck. You should not have said that and that fact was made even more evident by Jin's suddenly offensive stance he was now taking to you as he edged closer to you, making you instantly fumble in your heels to put more space between the two of you.
"And pray tell," He began, making an unnecessary movement to run his bright pink tongue over his lips causing you to gulp. "How did you acquire this information?"
You were beyond frazzled, cheeks blazing and insides squirming as embarrassment seared through you. But then you collected yourself. No. You would not be shamed for something a guy would happily share with his friends and get a slap on the back for. You took a step forward so that you were now standing all but chest to chest with your roommate. You had no idea why this stand off had even started in the first place but you were not about to be the one who caved and stepped down.
"We've been texting," You stated, the last words coming out as suggestive as possible so your message was conveyed. "I showed him mine so he showed me his. If you catch my drift."
There was a moment where Jin just stared at you and you instantly regretted your previous bravado. So you and Namjoon sexted one very wine induced night where you had been rather tipsy (and horny) and had decided to try on some of that lingerie your best friend had bought you and you had yet to use. And that led you taking pictures, because damn you looked fine, and that led your drunken self to send a picture to Namjoon. And that led him to send one back. One hour later you were giggling happily to yourself as you went to bed drunk and satisfied. But unfortunately, nothing had happened since then. Actually, you were almost certain that Namjoon had been avoiding you since and if that wasn't mortifying enough Jin now knowing what happened between the two of you definitely was.
But whatever, you, and your third gin and tonic couldn't actually give a shit anymore what he thought, especially while he definitely shouldn't be commenting on your sex life, or lack thereof, when he wasn't much better. The walls of your shared apartment were thin and you knew for a fact that the only action he'd been getting for past month or so was himself. You didn't care that this fight (or whatever the fuck this was because where did this sudden outburst even come from?) was completely unreasonable, he had started it and you were sick of his judgement. So you willed your face into a mask of unabashed steel and stared back at him.
You grew tired of his silence and rolled your eyes, ready to make your way out of this far too confusing situation. "If you have no further comment on my sex life I'm going to leave. Find me when your sober and finished being a bitter, horny bastard."
You took your opening, moving to flee the scene as you stepped passed Jin's impossibly broad shoulders. You bobbed and weaved your way through the crowd, heading in the direction of the bar because your gin and tonic was getting dangerously low and you needed alcohol to think right now. You just couldn't get over the randomness of Jin's sudden outburst or the source of this sudden of his poorly concealed anger. You had openly pined after people before and all Jin had ever done was be supportive. From start to finish, the situation was entirely fucked up and you were attempting to wrap your head around the actual meaning behind it when a familiar strawberry blonde appeared beside you.
"_____," Namjoon beamed, his dimples digging deep into his round cheeks as he said your name loudly over the pulsating house song that blared out of the speakers.
Your eyes widened as you fumbled for words, "Namjoon, hey."
"How you doin'?"
You wanted to raise an eyebrow. Was he really attempting small talk when your last conversation consisted of him stating just how much he wanted to be inside of you, while you promised to suck him off like a good girl? Fuck you were cringy when you were drunk. But despite all of this you still smiled. "'M great and you?"
He shrugged, "The usual."
"Sounds, riveting." And then there was a pause and you thought you were going to shrivel up and die because shit, this was fucking awkward.
"I've actually been meaning to message you," He suddenly blurted, and suddenly your focus sharpened because here it was. "I wanted to talk about our little," He paused as he attempted to grasp the correct word for the hour-long session you had both taken part in that you still had the evidence of in your gallery, "Conversation, last week."
Your brain started running a mile per second. You knew where this situation was going, it was going in the direction of 'you're great and all but I think we're better off as friends.' You started assessing how you could possibly turn this situation in your favour because fuck if you weren't even more frustrated now thanks to Seokjin and the idiotic tirade he had decided to spew out of nowhere. So in an act of alcohol-induced bravado, you stepped forward, the most seductive smirk you could muster carving its way onto your lips. "I actually wanted to speak to you about that too. I had so much," You staring directly at him now, tracing a single finger down the centre of his chest, "Fun. I mean I'd love to do it again, though I'd much prefer to continue our conversation in person this time."
There was a flicker of something that might have translated to willingness on his face as his gaze switched almost frantically between your wandering finger and your ever enticing smile. But then it was gone and he was taking a step back and you were sighing with mild disappointment because dammit. "I actually wanted to talk about how I don't think we should have one of our conversations again. I think it may be best if we just-"
"-Remain as friends?" You finished for him with a poorly concealed expression of ever-increasing irritation and indifference.
Apparently, it was concealed enough for Namjoon who sighed in visible relief, "So you agree then? Friends?"
"Of course Namjoon," You cooed, batting your eyelashes despite the ice in your tone at the blatant rejection you were being forced to receive with a smile because it would be clingy and needy if you actually voiced your opinion on the matter and how you didn't want to be friends, or at least not tonight when all you wanted was for him to follow you to your dorm room and fuck you until next Christmas. But instead, being the person you were who knew that while he may be painfully oblivious to the fact that you don't usually sext with a girl and then say you're not interested in going any further without the altercation usually ending up with at least some colourful words being exchanged, Namjoon wasn't a malicious guy and the reason why he was backing off was probably for something moral like him not wanting to take advantage of you when really you just wanted him to take you from behind.
Fuck, maybe you are needy.
His smile brightened and next thing you knew you were given a pat on the shoulder as he began to move past you, "I'll see you around, take care of yourself."
And with that, your activity for the evening was cancelled and you were left high and dry with nothing but the knowledge that at least you had yourself to keep you company, and that while there had been no true grantee with Namjoon, at least you knew that you could get yourself off. Though you had a very sneaking suspicion that those long, slender fingers knew exactly what they were doing. No, you couldn't think like this. You couldn't think about how lonely it was going to now be to return to your dorm and have to take care of your own needs, or worse, the mortification of now facing Seokjin with the reality of being rejected.
Your night had officially been ruined.
Without a moment of hesitation, you headed for the exit, slipping your arms into the leather jacket that had been loosely thrown over your shoulders on and pulling it close to your body as you exited the pulsating space and out into the clean, crisp 23:30 air. The cold hit you like a bullet of clarity and suddenly you were berating yourself for your own neediness before you began to make your way in the direction of your dorm that thankfully wasn't more than a few buildings down. As you marched your way down the pavement, knee-high boots clicking in succession to each of your powerful strides, you almost wanted to laugh at yourself. How had you allowed yourself to become so dependant on the attention of another person that you had actually been disappointed when rejection had come? You had forever steeled yourself into being a collage of sharp edges and snarky remarks that had never been concerned with the approval of anyone else and had never been the one who had gone seeking the attention of others for your own pleasure. Perhaps it was Jin's behaviour that had set you off, the abnormality of sending you into a spiral of confusion and frustration that had translated into you wanting to sleep with Namjoon that later resulted in you feeling rather awful after a perhaps extremely polite rejection, a rejection none the less.
Whatever the case was, you had felt dejected and you fucking hated it. You now wanted to wash the sensation from your skin because how should it be far that one person's opinion, whose opinion you never really cared for as much as you cared for other parts of his person, matter so much? It was fucking pathetic, that's what it was, and painfully human. To the point that by the time you had arrived back into your dorm, you were calculating just how many years it would take for science and technology to reach the point where species switch could be possible. But by the time you had removed your jacket and shoes and had unzipped your jeans and were finally back in your natural attire of a large t-shirt and underwear, you had gotten over it. But that was also another part of being human, the art of realising just how stupid you were, laughing at yourself and then continuing on.
So while you were over Namjoon's rejection, you were not over the shift in your roommate's personality. It was not as if he wasn't allowed to be irritated or anything but cherry but he had never acted in such a way when it concerned your love life or anything remotely similar. Of course, there had been the occasions where his opinion had swayed you from a guy but that was just through him letting you know of some of said potential suitor's exploits that as a popular guy, Jin obviously knew better than you a social recluse who didn't keep up with gossip. But tonight had been something different in of itself and you were still reeling if you were being honest. So while you contemplated the rather strange antics of your beloved friend and roommate, curled up on the couch the two of you had shared on the multiple nights you had both come home too drunk or tired to reach your rooms and simply ended up on the couch instead, you sipped gingerly on your usual night time glass of red wine that had become a habit of any night you suspected that your insomnia would play a nasty trick on you and emerge. And from all the rampaging emotions inside of you, you had assumed the worse and had poured yourself a healthy glass of dry merlot and were now enjoying the music of your own thoughts that were playing rather off-key thanks to the previous alcohol you had consumed and the conflict you were dealing with. It probably wasn't as big of a deal as you were making it but you had always been one to over analyse and you couldn't help but start nitpicking ever point in Jin's behaviour during the night.
He had been fine when you had first arrived, the two of you sticking together as you usually did during the rare few parties you actually allowed Jin to drag you too. Jin with his charm and easygoing nature was the perfect shield for your rather awkward and unskilled approach at socialising which usually consisted of saying a brief hello to newcomers before you hid within the people you had grown comfortable with over time. By your second, (or perhaps it had been your third?) drink you had found Namjoon from your position lingering by Jin and had used the distraction of the arrival of one of your roommate's classmate to begin your 'assessing' of Namjoon. You hadn't even realised that it had returned to just being you and Jin until Jin had decided to speak up and start his rant.
What a weirdo.
And as if the very term were his own personal summons, the door to your dorm burst open and was then proceeded by the rather unceremonious entrance of a clearly intoxicated Seokjin. How he continued to look attractive as he stumbled and hiccuped was a mystery in itself.
He only became aware of your presence after a few moments of stumbling about the foyer and even squinted as if to fully discern if you were actually real. "Why are you here?"
You scoffed a laugh, taking another leisurely sip of wine before you deemed it an appropriate time to respond. "I do live here Jin, I have a right to be here whenever I please. Or do you now also have an opinion on the amount of time I spend in our apartment?"
It was his turn to roll his eyes now as he began to wrestle with the zips of his boots, "I meant why are you here instead-" He took a moment to grunt his frustration as his boot refused to budge, only to start up again as soon as his foot was released, "-of being with Namjoon. Who according to someone's information is well endowed, though I'm beginning to grow suspicious of today's photo editing skills."
"The reason why I am here is because, after a hearty deliberation, I made the decision to rather return home where I can sleep so I'm not half dead tomorrow when I still have an essay to write." You retorted back before taking another sip of your wine, attempting to smother the rage that was creeping up with the bitter liquid.
"Oh," He dragged at the sound as he finally made it to the lounge after a few amusing moments of him battling with his cream coloured leather jacket. "So that's the reason why you left, I thought it had something to do with the fact that your sexting buddy played the 'friend' card on you. I must have gotten the wrong information then, my bad."
No wine could simmer the anger and heated irritation that now had officially clawed it's way into your system, though you did try as you knocked back the remaining contents of your glass before carefully setting it down on the coffee table and slowly rising from your seat. Why had he asked why you were home in the first place if he already had his own, regretfully correct, assumption of the situation?
It didn't matter that you were probably too scantily clad for this conversation or that 98% of the reason why Jin was saying this was probably was that he was drunk and he would never have even contemplated saying a word of this is he was sober. What you did care about was that you were tipsy and your roommate was being an arrogant, asshole that you were about ready to fight thanks to the wine and gin in your system and the frustration you were feeling due tonight's events. What mattered was that your face was only a few inches away from Jin's and you were ready for a fight.
"Listen here you little shit, you can either apologise now for being a complete asshole to me for no fucking reason or I can show you what growing up with 5 siblings taught me."
And just when you thought he couldn't become anymore infuriating, what did the little shit go and do, he fucking laughed at you. His doe-brown eyes that were usually warm and inviting, crinkling at the corners in mocking amusement. When he finished his tirade, he moved on to patting your head and squatting down just slightly to your inferior height with a shit eating smile. "You're so fucking adorable when you get all frustrated and start thinking that you're all tough and all knowing. It's fucking precious."
Rock struck splint and spark was lit, followed quickly by a raging fire as in a turn of events you were tipping your head up and bringing your teeth down onto soft skin. There was a millisecond of shock followed by a shriek of pain and the lose of contact as he instantly retracted his hand from your mouth.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" He squealed with clutching his injured hand to his chest, face a compilation of complete shock and surprise.
All you could do was smirk, satisfied with your work as you ran your tongue over your teeth before smiling brightly at him. "Don't fucking play with me bitch, I was brought up with wolves."
"Just because your siblings roughhoused doesn't mean you fucking bite people when they irritate you! Who the fuck does that?"
"Someone who's done with some twat's ignorance and stupidity and wants to get their point across." You answered simply while crossing your arms neatly over your chest. He continued to gape at you for a few moments more, and then suddenly there was an all but visible click and he was lunging at you. You let out a small shout of protest and surprise as your legs were tackled out from under you and you were sent back into the carpet with Jin landing on top of you. You spluttered for coherency as you found yourself trapped between the solid body of your roommate and your living rooms floor, chest rising to only deflate at an alarmingly rapid speed.
There was a pause of you simply staring at each other, you in shock while he was a mixture of contempt and something undiscernable.
You were both panting thanks to the sporadic burst of movement and you were still struggling to regain your thoughts when Jin smirked down at you, lowering himself so that his lips brushed your ear. "How's that for getting one's point across?"
You were at a lost for words and while it was mainly due.to the fact that you were still in shock from being tackled by your non-aggressive roommate, you couldn't deny that there was a part of you that had become flustered by the fact that your devastatingly good-looking roommate was currently pressed up against you while you were clothed in nothing but a shirt and underwear. It took you another moment to fully regain yourself and with a simple switch in attitude, you were letting out a defiant cry before you twisted your weight so that your jumble of bodies was forced to roll, resulting in you now on top and determined.
"What the actual fuck is your problem?" You snarled, having to use all of your strength to keep Jin's sculpted arms pinned down as you started directly into his startled eyes. "Why are you acting like this all of a sudden? Why are you all of sudden some opinionated on who and who I don't sleep with? What did I do to make you so irritated with me?"
The air felt as though it had been sucked out of the room as your words lingered in the stillness that had fallen upon you two. It was suffocating, and you could almost hear your far too desperate and frustrated questions ringing in your ears. Jin floundered for a good 30 seconds, opening and closing his mouth as he battled for the words that refused to come as you expectantly waited. And then he sighed in defeat, going limp under your grasp. "It's because I hated that wasn't me."
"What?"
Those were not the words you were expecting and they threw you for a spin as you stared him, utterly unsure of what to do next. He simply exhaled before shutting his eyes for a moment only to reconnect them with yours. "I hated that it wasn't me who you were sending those picture to, that it wasn't me that you couldn't take your eyes off of the entire night. I hated that you chose that asshole to reveal yourself to when all he did was reject you like a fucking dip shit. Like how the fuck does anyone in their right mind think they could possibly find better than you? Because trust me, I've tried, and there isn't anyone."
And then there was silence yet again as your brain attempted to process the amount of crushing information that had just been unloaded onto it. In your surprised state, you released him and slid off to the side, instinctively backing up against the couch as you tried to wrangle your thoughts together. He stayed laying flat for a moment and you swore you heard him say 'as I thought,' before he was pulling himself back to his feet with a surprising amount of coordination and moving in the direction of his room.
"Why didn't you say anything before?" You questioned almost silently though it was clear that he heard by the way his spine pricked and he froze in place. You slowly stood up, remaining stationary in the lounge just behind him. "Why did you never say anything about how you felt this entire time?"
He snapped out a laugh that was nothing short of sarcastic before turning slightly, "Because I didn't want you to react like you are now."
And just like that, your surprise began to be replaced by irritation, "How is my reaction right now so bad that you didn't fucking tell me this dammit?"
"I think you pulling back was a pretty clear indication of what you thought of this entire ordeal. Now if you'd excuse me, I need to go to sleep."
He turned away again to walk back to his room and abruptly you found yourself stalking up to him forcefully spinning him to face you, his eyes read utter confusion while you were all but fuming with another wave of rage. Your grip on his arm tightened as a new found determination course through you, "Listen here you asshole, you don't get to just assume my reaction because I let you go out of shock that my roommate just confessed to me, or did whatever you did just now. I was just processing how much of an idiot you had to be to think I would react better to you being a jealous, angsty asshole instead of you just telling me how you feel! I was also thinking about how much of an absolute dumbass you would have to be to not realise that I've liked you this entire time but I've just not said anything cause you fucking friend zoned me a month into living with me!"
He took a second to just blink at your outburst, mouth open as you continued to silently fume. "Wha-, I friend zoned you?! You friend zoned me!" You let out an offended gasp, "What do you mean I friend zoned you? A month into us living together we were watching some trope filled romantic comedy where the guy was in love with the girl best friend and you said that it was great that we had no feelings towards each other besides platonic because, and I quote, 'it's always just a mess when two good friends get together.'"
"I only said that because I heard you saying to your friend on the phone after a week of us living together that you were so glad that you felt no attraction whatsoever to me and that it would be great to have a strictly platonic male friend because they're 'so hard to find.'" Jin retorted before crossing his arms in defiance causing you to gape at him.
“I was being sarcastic about not being attracted to you because I was going through such a trial of being stuck with a hot, male roommate who I assumed had little to no interest in me because well, look at you!" You exclaimed while gesturing wildly in his general direction to make your point more clear.
Suddenly there was an undeniably smug smirk on his face as he peered down at you, "I'm sorry, did you just called me hot?"
"Of course I did you idiot!" You shouted, not having a single shred of patience to spare as your frustration with the situation continued. "But that's not the point! The point is, is that if you hadn't been an angsty little brat this whole time and kept your feelings a secret we both would have been happily fucking by now and would not be even half as sexually frustrated as we both obviously are right now."
"How is this just my fault?! If you've liked me for as long as you say you have why haven't you come out and said anything huh?" He fired back with equal defiance as he loomed over you.
"You know I never tell anyone my feelings, you should have known better than to wait for my emotionally detached self to make the first move when you're the one who's all good at socialising and being emotionally stable or whatever. Gosh, it's like you don't even know me," With that you threw your arms up in a final display of disbelief before you turned back to him, eyes lit with your next intentions. "So now we obviously need to fuck because I can not actually deal with this sexual tension anymore and I've literally fantasised about this for months."
"Wait," He began to splutter at your blunt words. "You want to do what?"
"Fuck." You said as though you were stating the weather. "Obviously. Weren't you the one just going on about how you wanted to be the one who got sent my dirty pictures, well," You paused to rip the shirt off and over your head leaving you in nothing but your underwear. "Here I am, in person."
So there you were, practically naked and standing in front of your roommate that you had just confessed your feelings too and suddenly doubting if every life decisions you made up until this point, including this one, was just a horrible mistake. But then a searing pair of lips were being slotted against your own and the goosebumps that had once appeared due to the chill that had attacked your exposed skin were replaced by a sizzling heat that started within your centre and spread through your entire body. Jin was finally kissing you. You were finally kissing Jin. You were dazed when he finally pulls back, tongue flicking at your bottom lip as he pulled you in by your waist, nose brushing against your own.
"If this is a dream," He spoke over the soft sounds of your breathless pants, "Then don't tell me. Because this might be the best moment my life." You couldn't help the warm haze that bloomed within you at the sheer care he used to brush a stray piece of hair that had fallen against your cheek. "You're such a cheesy little shit."
You could feel his smile against your lips as he pressed his mouth back to yours and then you were kissing again and it brought you such a bliss that you almost forget that you were basically naked and had just proposed that you wanted to fuck until Jin's hands began to wander and you released that you were at a definite disadvantage. Which was why you began to back him up with your lips still attached until he hit the neighbouring wall and began to tug eagerly at his shirt.
He chuckled, pausing to grant your request and then allowing you a moment to gawk at the sculpted chest you had grown somewhat accustomed to seeing due to Jin's habit of coming out of the shower in nothing but a towel. But you had never been this close or at the liberty to fully appreciate as you were now. Jin obviously found this immensely amusing as he moved to grab at your naked waist before pulling you close to him and refastening your lips together. You hummed in satisfaction when tongues were added and took the moment to suck happily at the muscle causing him to make a sound that was somewhere between a surprised squeak and a groan which causing your lips to curls as your skilled fingers began to work on unfastening the belt on his impossibly tight jeans that you had once mistaken as your own, only to not fit into them and then go on a day-long rant that it wasn't right that he had better legs than you. He had to assist you in the actual removal of the material as there was no way you would be able to take off the skin tight article by yourself. It took him less time then you expected to fully rid himself of his jeans and suddenly you were brought to the realisation that all was left was for you both to remove your underwear and you would officially be naked in front of each other. But while this thought drifted through your brain, Jin seemed less than even slightly bothered as he detached your lips from one another and began to make a downward descent down your body. Suddenly all of your petty worries evaporated like steam as his plump lips graced the outline of your plain cotton underwear and you were suddenly focused on the fact that something you had only dreamed of, and trust you had definitely dreamt of Jin going down on you because good lord those lips, had somehow become your reality.
You physically buckled forward when you were finally exposed to the air that was far cooler than your increasingly hot skin and you realised just how aroused and needy you were. This was the first time you had ever had this reaction to a partner during sex thanks to the inhibitor that you had subconsciously accumulated that caused you to never really be able to emotionally, and sometimes even physically, get into sex with someone else. Most of the time it was due to the fact that you never actually liked the person you were with or it was the little voice in the back of your head that always told you that they would never be able to get you off the right way which caused you to sometimes become disinterested in the act altogether. But of course this was different, this was Jin. The one person who even without trying had managed to summon reactions out of you unlike any other partner in your life. Surely that was clear in just how wet you were when all that occurred between the two of you was the shedding of clothes and the connecting of mouths. So you most likely shouldn't have been as surprised as you were that you were reacting this way, but it still knocked the air out of you when you felt the first application of his ring finger to your slit.
"What the actual fuck," You gasped quietly, not being able to compute anything as Jin's dangerously long finger sneaked past all guards and was suddenly pushing inside of you. You all but fell forward, hands scrambling for purchase on the wall in front of you that only moments before Jin was pressed up against, now he was on his knees before you, extracting some of the most embarrassingly shameless noises and reactions that you had ever performed in your life, and for god sake, he hadn't even truly started yet.
As if reading your last thought, Jin's impossibly dark eyes flickered up to you, mischief and desire swirling where usually nothing but innocence lived. His lips quirked into a tantalising micro smirk as he assessed your already frazzled expression, "For someone always complaining about sex not ever 'doing' it for them, you sure are a mess. And I've not even started yet."
"Don't be cheeky, asshole." You attempted to sound normal but suddenly there was another finger toying at your entrance and you almost lost your footing, the words turning into a stream of stuttered pants. You had always been a firm believer that penetration did little to nothing for most females as you had never in your life had an orgasm from penetration alone. And yet here Jin was again, proving you wrong as he slid in a second finger, curling it along with its partner and you were already 90% of the way to falling apart. But then again, sex was about 70% a mental game for women so you could only assume that your undying and all but sinful attraction both physically and mentally was contributing heavily to your current state because heavens know you've always been weak for the man whose was knelt between your legs ready to completely destroy you.
The chuckle that started from his chest wound up spreading through your entire body as suddenly the mouth that you were used to only hearing cheesy dad jokes and windscreen wiper laughter from was added to the demolishing of your sanity. You had always had this theory that Jin would be a master at oral and how right you were, a flash of tongue was applied to your plumped clit followed by the full envelopment of the bud by something similar to a silky furnace of wet warmth. You little out a small cry at the sensation that was doubled by the continued assault of moving fingers within you. The lewd noises that filled the room due to your continuously pooling arousal should have been embarrassing but you were too entirely consumed to care. You were also in a state of awe with how Jin was able to pick up on the smallest of cues that your body subconsciously gave, whether it be an intentional clench or a hitch in your panted breathing, he observed it all and continued accordingly which left you gasping for air and a twist to begin to form in your core.
"Why does this feel so good?" You all but whimpered to yourself as you felt your incoming high and continued to grind yourself onto Jin's lips and fingers while his free hand grasped your hip for support, "What kind of sorcery is this?"
Jin was obviously too preoccupied to reply, especially as pleasure was currently skyrocketing through you and both of your movements became more rushed. You had never been particularly vocal during sex sound wise but as quite possibly the most exquisite orgasm of your life came rushing towards you, the moan that left your lips was somewhere in between a cry and a shout as the sensation blossomed from your core throughout your entire body leaving your trembling as Jin coaxed everything from you with skillful strokes and thrusts. Contact was lost as he pulled himself up and reclaimed his footing, a devilishly cocky yet somehow also caring look on his face as he took in your entirely wrecked expression.
"There's nothing better then to see hard work pay off if you know what I mean," He cheekily chortled.
Your breathing was out of control and you were panting as though you had just finished walking up the stairs to your apartment, but you were also even more energised than before with the lingering pulses of pleasure still zapping your senses. You would have returned his arrogant statement if you weren't so busy copying his previous posture while pushing him back up against the wall and making quick work of removing his underwear that you were rather pleased to see had a mark of pre-cum on the front. You were fully ready to reclaim some sort of standing in this situation and what better way to do that then one of your infamously amazing blowjobs? You didn't allow Jin one more moment of pride before you were attaching your lips to the head of his dick. Before this, you had never thought of dicks being well, attractive in any way to be honest, but somehow, like everything else about Jin, his cock was also beautiful and you suddenly were granted the worry that you might actually end up enjoying this more than he.
Though when you glanced upwards to catch a glimpse of his face as you began to slowly take him down your throat thanks to you being blessed with an all but no existent gag reflex, your worries dissipated. It seemed that there was no one in hell that could enjoy anything more then Jin was enjoying himself right now, whimpers, moans and breathy curses were spilling from his lips like honey. When his dick hit the back of your throat he was throwing his head back with a cry and you couldn't help making a sound of appreciation to the amount of noise he was making because while you weren't vocal you had always preferred more vocal partners. You liked to know when you were wrecking someone and Jin was definitely letting you know with the string of unintelligible sounds and the hand that would grip your hair in a manner that was just rough enough for you to appreciate it everytime you applied a prized amount of pressure or purposeful suck. Your hands reached up to grab at the gym-sculpted ass that you had actually been able to get a few playful jabs at during your friendship but were now allowed to fully appreciate as you used it to helpfully push in the remaining length into your mouth.
To be completely honest, you would have happily stayed on your knees all night long and continue to suck him off because you were having the time of your life seeing the always collected and composed Jin fall apart under your ministrations. But Jin apparently felt selfish and in want of something more as he, rather reluctantly, removed himself from your mouth and pulled you up to your feet.
You pouted as you finished cleaning off your lips with your tongue,"Aw, but I was having so much fun."
"I could tell," He snickered while removing some lasting moisture from the side of your lips before pressing his mouth to yours, his tongue coming into contact with yours granting some of the lingering taste of your past orgasm. "But I don't like I can bounce back as quickly as I'd want to tonight so I'd much rather come with you."
"I guess I can allow that," You drawled which caused something between a scoff and a laugh to sound against your lips. "But if we're going to fuck, I'd much rather do it in one of our rooms as while I'm sure we're capable of fucking against this wall, I personally don't want that back pain in my life. It's also an extremely large amount of effort that I really don't feel like exerting right now."
Jin let out a full-on laugh as he began to follow you in the direction of his room, hand grasping after yours. "You really are efficient in everything aren't you?"
"Always," You stated simply while crawling onto his bed, you noticed that he seemed to be looking around for something and thanks to your amazing brain power you quickly guessed what it was. "You don't need to worry about covering up, by the way, there has to be a reason I have this fucking coil in my arm."
He looked up in surprise, a pink haze coating his cheeks, somehow embarrassed by this rather than when you were both getting each other off. "You sure, I really don't mind."
"What's the point of this thing if not to have some good all fashion, condomless sex. And I know your test results so we're all good." You summed up a matter of factly, before flipping yourself over and wiggling your ass in a way that you hopped was somewhat attractive. "Now stop the yapping, let's get fapping."
"I love it when you talk dirty babe," Jin snarked but came up behind you, the presence of his body enveloping your quickly causing the once light atmosphere to dissolve, especially as he began to grace kisses up your spine to your shoulder where he lightly applied his teeth as he nipped at the skin. "I still can't believe this is happening, like is this actually real right now?"
"Apparently," You sighed in return as he mouthed at your ear, back arching in approval. "And if it's not, we should probably start fucking before one of us wakes up and ruins everything."
Jin hummed in agreement, pressing his lips back to yours as he used his free arm that wasn't propping himself over you to place his tip at your entrance. He stilled for a moment, seemingly gauging your reaction which caused you to roll your eyes behind your closed eyelids and kiss him harder before pushing back your hips so his head slipped inside of you. He pulled back to let out a loud gasp while you panted in satisfaction at the sensation of him finally being inside of you. Despite the fact that you had already come once, you were still tight thanks to the fact that you hadn't had sex in months and you weren't into penetration during masturbation. Jin leaned back on his knees, his moan shaking through your body as you greedily pushed yourself back until your hips were resting against each other.
"Holy fucking shit," He cried out, grabbing at your waist. "Fuck, fuck, fuck you feel so good. What the fuck, how do you feel so good?"
You would have smirked if you weren't so equally wrecked out by the feel of him and you wanted to return the sentiment because how the fuck did he feel so good? Again you were just shocked by the effect Jin had on you and while it could have been counted as daunting you found it thrilling that you finally had found someone who you truly reacted to and from the signs Jin was exhibiting, the feeling was mutual.
With you bent over, chest propped up by your arms, Jin began to finally thrust into you, the position allowing him to fully sheath himself into you. You took everything he gave you with a series of appreciating moans and curses while he continued to be vocal about how 'fucking amazing and unreal this was.' Being the impatient and needy person you were, you met each of his movements half way so that there was never a moment that he was ever fully out of you. That was until a few minutes in a hand was wrapping are your neck in a caress and your body was being pulled upright so that the flush of your back was against his impossibly broad chest. The pressure on your throat wasn't enough to do anything but keep you secure but no choking was needed to take your breath away as he extracted himself entirely from you, only to enter back in with an uncanny amount of force. With this new position of you both on your knees, upright, he was somehow to reach a point in you that you had sometimes begun to doubt the existence of.
"Fuck," You all but shouted at this uncommon sensation, not being able to actually believe your own body. ''Fuck Jin, yes."
"There's that mouth I've been missing," Jin cooed in between pants and soft moans of his own though his volume returned as he thrust back into you and he succumbed to the feeling, "Fuck you were so right about me being stupid for not saying anything sooner, just imagine if we had been doing this, this entire time."
"I don't know how we would have ever have gotten anything done," You stated breathlessly, a groan escaping you as Jin began to move again, your hips subconsciously joining the rhythm. "But fuck this is good."
"It's because we're fucking amazing," Jin said as more of a moan as you clenched down on him, his free hand drifting to your front to find your clit. "Or just amazing at fucking."
"Both," You agreed, spasming slightly as the effect of being fully stimulated took over. "Fuck Jin, I'm already close."
"Oh thank god, so am I." He panted in relief, still thrusting into you without a moment of pause. He did take a moment to adjust the angle of his motions which caused him to brush over that phantom spot again and send you completely reeling and over the edge causing you to slump forward and out of Jin's hold. In search of his own orgasm, he helped to lengthen the effects of your own, pushing himself into you at a sporadic speed. Almost before you could comprehend what was happening, a completely different kind of warmth was filling you as Jin came in you with a cry and his body hunching over your own as he trembled due to the aftershock of his orgasm.
His softening length slipped out of you as he moved so that he was beside you on his bed, both of you too fucked out to even consider moving or speaking for at least a few moments. It was only when your heart rate began to slowly calm and you began to regain your senses did you open your eyes and look for him. He was on his back in a similar state, chest rising and falling at an alarming pace but as if feeling your gaze he turned to look at you, a glowing smile taking over the exhausted and shattered expression on his face.
You couldn't stop the swelling of your heart at the adoring look and returned his grin ten fold as you lazily lifted your hand to brush a piece of fallen chestnut hair from his eyes, "I want to cuddle you so badly right now but we're far too sticky and gross for that right now."
He took your hand into his, bringing it to his mouth where he gently kissed each tip, the most gentle sign of affection either of you had shown so far, "I can't help but agree so I think the only next course of action is to get clean and to get some food so that we can go for round two."
"I thought you said that you didn't think you could bounce back so fast?" You chuckled while you exhorted some of your precious energy to pull yourself up so you could follow after him as he began to make his way in the direction of his bathroom.
He scoffed, slinging a lazy arm around your waist as he walked side by side, "I meant right away. If you think that we're only going once you are mistaken. I still need a proper apology from someone for sending r rated photos to someone else rather than me."
"Hey, you have no right to be mad about that. I had no idea you liked me and I was a bit drunk." You attempted to defend yourself, a small pout taking over your features.
"I can be mad that someone got to see all of this," He grabbed at your ass, "Before me."
"But that's just because you decided to be a moody asshole instead of just saying how you felt!"
Jin seemed to take a moment to regard your words before he was pulling your still naked body against his, "So I guess I have some apologising to do."
There was a stir in you at the expression on his face and the memory of him knelt before you caused you to smirk, "Then I think the only next course of action is for to get straight to apologising."
And just like that, he was dropping down before you in the hallway, hands gripping your thighs as he peered up at you with dark sincerity, "I couldn't agree more."

The first time I ever heard of Soapy Smith was in an old cartoon. Indeed, for the longest time, I put him right up there with the likes of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse. Someplace in my teenaged years, I discovered he was a real person when I was flipping through an old west book that belonged to my father.
It wasn’t until I became interested in the Old West and especially the bad guys who cruised through my neck of the woods, that I became aware of what an interesting character he was.
Soapy Smith was a conman. At least that’s the nicest thing we can say about him. The way he operated sounds more like something a Mafia Don or head of a drug cartel might do. Had he been working today, the FBI would be camped out on his doorstep just waiting for him to do something.
A list of the illegal things he was into reads like the worst sins in the Bible. He was heavy into prostitution, buying off public officials, and cheating people out of money and properties. At times he operated like Robin hood. Other times like the Devil himself.
Soapy’s real name was Jefferson Randolph Smith II. A pretty impressive name for a not so common crook.
He was born in 1860 in Coweta County, Georgia. Soapy came from a family that was well educated and wealthy. His grandfather owned a plantation and had been a popular legislator. His dad was a lawyer.
All that changed with the South losing the Civil war. Broke, the Smiths moved to Round Rock, Texas, in 1876. Soapy began his career as a conman there.
He left home after the death of his mother and went to Ft. Worth. Here’s where he formed a close-knit gang of assorted other con men and thieves to work for him. Soon, he wore the crown of the “king of the frontier con men.” He was also forming the philosophy and tactics that would make him a well-known crime boss.
The gang subscribed to the philosophy of “A fool, and his money is soon parted.”
They moved from town to town with one objective: to separate people from their money or property. They did this through prostitution, the old Shell Game, three-card Monte, and rigged poker games.
In the late 1870s, early 80s, Soapy came to Denver, Colorado. It’s in Denver that he earned the name he’d be known by.
You have to admit; he had a great racket going here. What he’d do is sell bar soap. Well, so far, no harm done.
After all, there are perfectly legitimate companies that sell soap. Some have even done things like put drinking glasses and towels in as a reason to buy their product. Or promised your whites will be dazzling white and can remove that pizza stain from your favorite T-shirt.
Soapy took this to a whole new level. He’d have several unwrapped bars of soap on his stand. While he’s telling everyone how great the soap is by telling them that they’ll get their muddy pants clean or their whites whiter than white, he started wrapping money around some of the bars.
He’d wrap different values of anywhere from a one-dollar bill to a hundred dollars around the bars. He then folded the money wrapped bars into paper, so they matched a large tub full of soap he was selling. He then APPEARED to mix the soap bars into the bars in the tub.
When people started buying them, a plant out in the audience would announce he got a bar with money and flash a bar that had money around it. It had the desired effect. Everyone was buying the soap.
Now a hundred dollars doesn’t sound like a lot of money by today’s standards. But remember, we’re talking the 1870s here. That one hundred dollars would translate out to a little less than two thousand dollars in 2020. I know many people who willingly lay down one, five, even more dollars to buy a lottery ticket with odds against winning so high that one could say you have zero chance of winning.
Soapy preyed on the same thing people today hope for, a break. And he was convincing enough to make them think that it could happen.
The police quickly figured out what was going on, and this is where Soapy got his handle. A Denver Policeman named John Holland arrested him. While writing the incident up in his logbook, he forgot Soapy’s full name and gave him the nickname of “Soapy.” The name stuck, and he became “Soapy Smith.”
He was able to use the same scam for the next 20 years. It and other scams helped finance a criminal empire.
If there were a manual out there for running a criminal empire, then Soapy was reading it every day and following it to the letter. To protect his kingdom, Soapy paid off police officers, judges, and even politicians and used almost the same tactics to build three major criminal organizations in Denver (1886-1895), Creede, Colorado (1892), and Skagway, Alaska (1897-1898).
As the crime boss of Denver, Soapy did what the likes of Capone and others would do. Typically criminals move about to avoid detection. Not soapy. He owned City Hall and the police and was able to avoid prosecution.
In 1888 he opened the Tivoli Club at the corner of Market and 17th Street. The building was a combination saloon and gambling house. According to legend, the words “caveat emptor” or “Let the buyer beware” was above the staircase leading up to the gambling games. I guess you couldn’t say he didn’t warn them.
The old club is on the left and no longer exists.
Several “front” businesses such as cigar shops and the like opened into poker games and the brothel that operated in the back rooms. Fraudulent lottery shops, stock exchanges, and auction houses also abounded.
Because of payoffs, some local police officers refused to arrest Smith and his associates. Others were afraid of him and his organization. Even when they were arrested, a cadre of friends, lawyers, and associates was ready to get them out of jail.
Also, Smith wasn’t alone in trying to be the crime boss of Denver. There were several attempts on his life, and he shot several assailants. He became increasingly known for his gambling and bad temper.
In 1892, things changed in Denver. There was a massive move to get rid of gambling, and there were saloon reforms. Seeing the change, Smith sold the Tivoli, packed up his operation, and moved to Creede, Colorado.
By having several of his working girls cozy up to property owners, they convinced them to sign over their leases. Soon, Soapy acquired numerous lots on Creede’s main street and rented them to associates. Once he had the backing, he announced he was the camp boss. In short, using his money and properties, Soapy proclaimed himself mayor.
Creede before the Fire
Soapy opened the Orleans Club. With the help of his brother-in-law and a gang member, William Sidney “Cap” Light, who was now the Deputy Sheriff, he started his second empire.
Smith provided an order of sorts for the small town. He also protected his friends and associates from the Legitimate Town Council and sent troublemakers packing. To curry favor with the locals, he used his money by helping the poor, built churches, and buried the unfortunate.
Along the way, some of his associates became friends with another old west outlaw named Bob Ford, who shot and killed Jesse James. There have been rumors, mostly unsupported, that Soapy may have had something to do with Ford’s killing. The suspicion is that Soapy at least suggested it to O’Kelley (who killed Ford). If Soapy did, O’Kelley never confirmed it and took it to his grave.
What is known is that Soapy left Creede to return to Denver just a few days before the great Creede fire destroyed the community. The situation had changed in Denver, making it possible for him to return to his criminal enterprises there.
Besides, the silver in Creede had begun to play out, and who wants to be king of a ghost town.
Soapy was soon back up to his old tricks in Denver. But the State of Colorado was about to interfere with his life.
Davis Waite was elected Governor of Colorado on a reform platform. One of his first tasks was to fire three Denver officials he felt weren’t abiding by his mandates. They refused to leave and were soon joined by others who felt their jobs were threatened. The state militia was called to remove those fortified in City Hall.
Smith joined the corrupt officeholders and police in City Hall. He was given a commission as a Deputy Sheriff. Armed with rifles and dynamite, he and several others climbed to the top of City Hall with the intent to fight off any attackers.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and the incident known as the “City Hall War” came to a close.
Smith continued being the crime boss, but soon he got a little too big for his own good. His patrons in the City Hall and other places could no longer offer the protection he needed. When he was charged with the attempted murder of a saloon manager, he ran, leaving others to take control of his various enterprises.
His running took him to Skagway, Alaska.
It was 1897, and gold was the attraction for many. Soapy was soon up to his old tricks there. His first try at taking over Skagway failed. A Miner’s Committee encouraged (whatever that means) him to leave. He didn’t return till the following year.
He got a U.S. marshal on his payroll and sat about collecting friends and allies. His best front was a Telegraph Office. For a fee, they’d send a telegraph message for a miner. Since telegraph lines hadn’t reached Skagway yet, any messages sent went from the desk to the trash can. The place also served as a front for rigged poker games.
Smith opened a saloon called Jeff Smith’s Parlor. Besides drinking, it also offered the same rigged games he’d ran for years as well as the usual house of ill-repute. Despite having a city infrastructure, Smith’s Saloon became the “the real City Hall” because he was running Skagway at this point.
The problem was there were some solid citizens in the community, and they were getting tired of Smith and his gang. They knew all about Smith and companies deception, and so they formed a group known as the “The Committee of 101” threatened to expel Smith and company.
Smith retaliated by forming his own Law and Order society with 317 members and forced the vigilantes into submission.
The war for Skagway had begun.
July 8 marks the day Soapy Smith met his maker.
The previous day, a miner named John Stewart came in with a sack of gold. A couple of Soapy’s associates separated him from it in a game of three-card monte. When Stewart balked at paying them, the men grabbed the money and ran.
This is what Stewart said occurred:
I told Foster I should hold him for the money, and the old man, Van Triplett, said we acted as if we could not trust him, and gave some of the money back, and then said he would give us a chance to win it [all back], so Foster turned the right card and [Triplett] started to give him the money, but said, ‘Supposing you had bet that in earnest, did you have the money to put up?’ Foster said, ‘No,’ and turning to me said, ‘You have the money,’ and I said no, I did not have any money; that he took it all, but he said, ‘You have some dust,’ and wanted me to get it just to show the old man that we had the money in case the bet had been a real one. Bowers and I went to Kaufman’s store to get the money and Van Triplett and Foster remained behind. We came back with the dust and I unrolled it and showed them the sack, and the old man said he did not know if that was gold, and Bowers said, ‘Open it and show it to him, as he don’t know gold dust when he sees it,’ but I did not open it, and [was] just about to roll it up again, when Foster grabbed it and handing it to the old man, said, “Git!” and I started to grab the old man when they held me and said if I made a noise it would not be well for me. I pulled away from them and started after the old man, but could not see him and then went across the street and asked a party where there was an officer: that I had been robbed of $3,000 by some men over there.
The officer he went to was Deputy U.S. Marshal Sylvester S. Taylor. It didn’t get him anywhere because Taylor was on Soapy’s payroll, and he told Stewart that if he stayed quiet about the matter, he’d see what he could do.
Stewart didn’t stay quiet. He told anyone who would listen what had happened. Soon, the streets were starting up in an uproar.
Things concerning the incident get a little confusing here. Some say that Soapy dug in and said that if Stewart hadn’t made such a big deal about it, he would make amends. Others say he would make amends and promised his mn would do nothing of the sorts in the future.
According to a promise made by Smith, the money was supposed to have been returned by 4 PM that day. But 4 PM came and went, and no money. Word reached Smith that there was trouble coming, and he is reputed to have said, “By God, trouble is what I’m looking for.”
Trouble arrived in the form of U.S. Commissioner Charles A. Sehibrede. He demanded that Soapy meet him at the Marshal’s office. In the Marshal and a reporter’s presence, Sehibrede demanded that the money be returned, and the people who did this arrested.
I don’t know if he got the answer he expected because Smith stuck to his story. It’s reported that:
.. the boys who had the money won it in a fair game, and they should keep it. He also said he had a hundred men who would stand behind him and see that they were protected. The judge finally told him he [Smith] could not afford to stand up for a gang of thieves, but he [Smith] almost screamed—”Well, Judge, declare me in with the thieves. I’ll stay with them,” and with that he passionately beat the table with his fist and left the room.
After he left, Sehibrede asked if he swore out warrants, would the Marshal arrest them. He was told he would.
But the time for a negotiated settlement had run out.
Two separate vigilante groups decided to do something about it. The larger group, the “Citizens Committee,” had a meeting at Sylvester Hall. So many people showed up the facility couldn’t accommodate them all. Additionally, several of Smith’s men showed up, intending to disrupt the meeting.
As a result, another meeting was held at the Skagway Wharf Improvement Company building, most commonly known as Juneau Wharf.
At the meeting, four men were appointed to keep trouble makers (Smith’s men) out. Of the four, the only one who was armed was Frank Reid, and that was with a .38 caliber pistol.
About nine that evening, Smith received a message that things were about to get uglier and that if he wanted to do something, this was the time to do it.
He decided to attend the meeting. Arming himself with a rifle, Soapy took a walk to the wharf in the company of several of his men. Ordering his men to stay back a little, he walked on.
According to accounts, the men were in at least three different groups. When Soapy encountered the first group, he ordered them off the wharf. They were happy to comply.
The second group of men was Josias Tanner, a ship and barge Captain, and Jesse Murphy, a railroad employee. Soapy walked past them without acknowleding their existence.
That left Reid standing between him and the meeting.
According to accounts, Reid told Soapy he couldn’t go any further. The two men began to argue and swear at each other. Now here’s where witness accounts differ.
They all agree that reid still had his 38 in his belt, and Soapy had the rifle on his shoulder. No one seems to agree on who shot first. Some say Reid drew and fired, others that Soapy tried to fire at Reid. What is agreed on is that the Shootout on Juneau Wharf began unexpectedly.
Allegedly, Soapy brought the rifle off his shoulder. If he meant to shot Reid or club him aside isn’t clear, but Reid blocked it with his arm. Somehow, Reid got cut in all this by the rifle but managed to push it down and drew his own weapon. He pointed it at Soapy and pulled the trigger. The hammer fell on a defective round and didn’t discharge.
Someplace in here, Soapy is supposed to have said, “My God, don’t shoot!”
Soapy jerked the rifle away and accounts state was that both men fired at the same time. There were at least five shots fired. Reid took a bullet in his leg and then fired off two rounds at Soapy.
One bullet grazed Soapy’s left arm while the other went through the left thigh right above the knee.
Soapy chambered another round, and this time shot Reid in the stomach. Reid collapsed to the dock, mortally wounded.
As Smith’s men rushed toward their wounded leader, Jess Murphy, one of the guards along with Reid, grabbed Soapy’s rifle away from him and, turning it towards Soapy, pulled the trigger.
This might also have been where Soapy uttered his last words of “My God. Don’t shoot!”
It didn’t do any good. Smith died on the spot.
As Soapy’s men surged forward, Murphy pointed the rifle at them. One of Soapy’s men is supposed to have pulled his weapon and aimed it at Tanner. But seeing Murphy aiming his boss’s rifle at him and the approach of “Committee” men pouring out of the meeting, he didn’t fire. “Someone is supposed to have yelled, “They killed Soapy, and if you don’t get going, they’ll kill you too.”
Before long, all of Soapy’s men had either fled or been rounded up. The Army came in to keep the peace and threatened martial law.
Stewart’s gold was found with Soapy’s possessions, and except for $600.00 was all accounted for. It was returned to him.
Tanner became a deputy U.S. Marshal.
Frank Reid died of his wounds twelve days later. His funeral was the largest Skagway had seen up to that point. His headstone was inscribed with “He gave his life for the honor of Skagway.”
The king of con men was buried several yards outside the city cemetery.
The Bad Guys of the San Luis Valley – Part 3 – Soapy Smith The first time I ever heard of Soapy Smith was in an old cartoon. Indeed, for the longest time, I put him right up there with the likes of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny, and Mickey Mouse.

SleepWalker Freshman List 2020
Written By Amari Newman Quentin Zimbalist
We are SleepWalker Entertainment. Starting off as a radio show on Oberlin College’s WOBC 91.5fm in 2018 dedicated to highlighting underground Hip-Hop and the community that surrounds it, we have expanded into the journalistic side of music, publishing various reviews, lists, and articles related to music. These have ranged from album of the year lists to interviews with different musicians who have performed at Oberlin including Suzi Analogue, VRITRA, Ethereal, NappyNappa, and SIR E.U. Right around this time last year we published our very first “Freshman List,” built off of XXL magazine’s idea of highlighting artists relatively new to the rap game who gained a lot of attention in the most recent year. Seeing how XXL’s list seemed to increasingly lose touch with the current wave of genuine Hip-Hop, SleepWalker looked to create our own list of new(ish) artists who we believe are making important impacts on the direction of the genre. The following list will highlight the breakthrough rappers, producers and visual artists of this past year, who we believe people are listening to and want to experience.
Rappers: Producers: Visual Artists:
Pop Smoke (RIP) Evil Giane Nitetive Visuals
Baby Smoove Adé Hakim Revenxnt
Hook Axl Beats DVD CITY
Baby Fifty JWords The Realest Photographer Ever
Babyxsosa Hi-C Brick Productions
Camden Malik DamnJonBoi 1Drince
BKTHERULA GAWD She Skin
Pop Smoke:
Sleepwalker wanted to write a tribute post to the late young superstar, Pop Smoke. The young Brooklyn-born prodigy emerged in the public eye in January with his hit record, FLEXIN, and followed that up with the song of the summer, Welcome to the Party. Pop Smoke’s 2019 was one of the greatest breakout years of all time within the hip-hop music industry, and it was apparent that he would remain a star for years to come. His death was a tremendous tragedy for not only those within the Hip Hop community, but millions of his fans across the world.
Rest in Peace, Pop Smoke.
Baby Smoove:
Baby Smoove, one of Detroit’s newest household names has actually been dropping music for quite some time now. The oldest song of his I could find was Supersonic, a track he dropped in 2012 under the name “Bandcrew Smoove”, he used a few different aliases before finding his current stage name. Smoove holds onto instrumentals in an incredibly natural way. Sliding in and out of rhythm, on and off of the beat, he always finds his place when the downbeat comes back around. His quiet, inflectionless delivery is a stark contrast to his lyrical content. Smoove raps about his lavish lifestyle, he enjoys splurging on the indulgences he lived without as a child. Other Detroit artists recognize Smoove’s prowess and collaborate with him when allowed. Recently he has worked with big name artists and producers from all over the city like Veeze, Icewear Vezzo, Rocaine, Michigan Meech, and Topside. Needless to say, Baby Smoove definitely earned his position in life, and on this list.
Songs to listen to: Palm Angels, Hellcat, Free Game
Hook
From Riverside, California (Inland Empire /IE) the 21 year old has been gaining steady recognition for her unorthodox flow and distinct style. Hook has been making music since she was 9 years old, travelling and performing in an R&B/Rap group with her step-sisters. As Hook got older, she shifted her focus onto her solo career, garnering a lot of attention throughout the underground with the release of her mixtape “Bully” in early 2019. Hook has made a name for herself for her deliberate flows that incorporate elaborate mid-verse pauses, laughs, gasps, and signature ad libs emanating an unparalleled energy that makes a listener's body uncontrollably convulse from pure pleasure. In the latter half of 2019 and early 2020, Hook put out a few more mixtapes alongside her debut album Crashed My Car, which displayed her steady evolution in sound and abilities to make great music. A frequent collaborator of legendary underground producer nedarb, Hook has also worked with Bootychaaain, WorkingOnDying, RCB and even comedian/rapper Zack Fox. More and more people are becoming aware of the greatness that is Hook, making the rest of 2020 even more exciting for herself and supporters.
Songs to listen to: I’m Shinnin, HEEM, Stand It
Baby Fifty
From Southeast, Washington D.C., the 19 year old’s nonchalant delivery of bars describing rampant death and destruction over any type of beat has quickly solidified himself as one of the most exciting rappers in the city. Fifty’s spaced out delivery accompanied with lyrics packed with punchlines, lingo, double entendres and signature ad libs allows each one of his sinister bars to imprint itself on any listener’s mind. There are very few rappers who can make you feel like everything they say is true, and Baby Fifty is one of them. Every song feels like he is having a calm conversation about the lethal activities he partakes in on a casual Monday. Fifty remains pretty individual in his output with his last few projects being featureless, but he has worked with frequent collaborator Hu$tle, MoneyMarr, and Cheecho. Fifty is one of the youngest and most respected artists from the DC area, and will continue to raise the bar for the remainder of the year.
Songs to listen to: sunniD, Walkout, Roll Out
Babyxsosa
The 19 year old Richmond, VA native grabbed attention from the whole underground with the release of the GAWD produced single “EVERYWHEREIGO” in the middle of 2019. She then joined the New York-based collective Surf Gang and continued to pump out amazing music, including her newest EP BABYXOBAMA. Even though her recognition is relatively recent, Babyxsosa has been releasing musical content since 2015 making waves in the Richmond area as a DJ and producer. Her musical experience is clear in her diverse selection of beats, and complex structures of harmonies and verses. Babyxsosa’s high pitched voice allows her to casually hit octaves that sound perfect in your eardrums, and her mastery of switching between rapping and singing mid-verse creates a distinct flow that only sosa can achieve. She has collaborated with fellow Surf Gang members Evil Giane, Polo Perks and Pasto Flocco, and has a notable catalogue of collaborations with fellow Richmond artist and freshman GAWD. Babyxsosa has undeniable potential, which she fulfills with every new release, making the rest of her 2020 an exciting sight to see.
Songs to listen to: UBERXL feat Polo Perks, PUSSY FREESTYLE, DOWN
Camden Malik
From New York City by way of Sacramento, California; Camden Malik has proved time and time again that he is beyond worthy of his place on this list. I was made aware of Camden when I saw him perform Live this past summer. I attended a Show Me the Body show in Ridgewood, Queens because of the opener, MIKE. During MIKE’s set, he allowed some friends of his to perform their music as well. Among these friends were big names such as Pink Siifu and King Carter, as well as Camden Malik, whom I was unaware of at the time. He performed his track “Dreams”, and it was easily the best performance of the set. Malik seemed to hit every word of the song, captivating the entire crowd as he spit circles around the mic in his gold-rimmed glasses. After the performance, I began researching him, only to find his stockpile of music on the internet, recently working with artists like ZelooperZ and Darryl 10k. He finds ways to pack all of his rhymes with meaning, while placing them into pockets of the beats that most artists would not even know existed. I truly think this guy could rap over anything and I can’t wait to see what he brings to 2020.
Songs to listen to: Lie Detector, Hear da Same Thang, World Different (ft ZelooperZ)
BKTheRula
From Atlanta, Georgia, BKTHERULA is proving to be one of the most exciting female rappers coming from the area. She started putting out music in 2017, but gained attention at the beginning of 2019 for her underground hit “Faygo.” BK continued to pump out hits throughout 2019 including her biggest hit “Tweakin Together.” BK’s punch-in delivery mixed with her high vocal octave is entrancing, and is combined with a myriad of futuristic melodies and next level 808s, making her music impossible to not bob your head to. She has enhanced her singing capabilities over the year dropping her debut project Love Santana where more than half of the songs explore her melodic capabilities that hit a sonic sweet spot, giving a soothing massage to a listener’s heart and mind. But BK can follow up any ballad with an intense barrage of strictly bars, that automatically gives you the stank face. This past year, BK has worked with Atlanta producers Digital Nas and Rxlvnd, and has been a frequent collaborator of Autumn! and fellow freshman Hook. In fact, the two artists are rumored to have a collaborative mixtape that could be released at any moment. BK already stands apart from the flood of artists who gained attention in 2019, and her willingness to explore her capabilities on more experimental releases gives her the potential to truly skyrocket to another level.
Songs to listen to: LEFT RIGHT, UH HUH, DAMN
Producers:
Evil Giane
Surf Gang CEO evilgiane is probably at the forefront of the New York City underground right now, and moving upward at an astounding speed. Giane has been producing for a few years now, using other monikers such as YUNALOE and aloevine before adopting his current alias. Originally, Aloevine dropped mostly house music tracks, but he began releasing hip-hop beats a few years ago and has not slowed down since. Giane’s trademark sound these days consists of clean and punchy drums, and uplifting melodies, though through his leaks and posts online, it is clear that this producer’s talent extends way beyond his sound, as his drill and even experimental punk beats rival some of the greats. Recently, Evilgiane has placements with a plethora of up and coming stars; HOOK, Babyxsosa, and Pasto Flocco, as well as songs with established underground heroes like Black Kray and BootyChaaain. I’ve already called 2020 as the year of Surf Gang so it only makes sense that Giane will continue to fly as the CEO. Expect big things.
Songs produced by Evil Giane: MOH BARETTA - ALL4U IV, POLO PERKS - RICH GIRL/starpower, Hi-C - tr3nd1ng t0p1c juiced
Adé Hakim
From the Bronx, NYC, the 21 year old rapper and producer has been putting out music as far back as 2014 under the name Sixpress. Adé is a member of the [sLUms] collective, and has helped curate the next phase of New York’s sound that gained a lot of mainstream popularity this past year. Hakim incorporates a wide range of sonic layers in his production including violins, horns, cries and moans from blues songs, piano riffs, and video game effects. These are all stretched, reversed and changed in pitch, creating a brand new authentic melody. This is accompanied by snares, claps, kicks and 808s that are also adjusted, giving them a mechanized sound that allows the expansive nature of his production to fully form. Listening to an Adé Hakim beat sounds like you are strolling through a busy robotic construction site with headphones on that is playing Miles Davis at half the normal speed in one ear, and the Sonic The Hedgehog videogame score in the other. Hakim has worked with a large number of New York legends in the making including MIKE, King Carter, Medhane and Navy Blue, and has expanded his sound past the city working with NAPPYNAPPA, Pink Siifu and Earl Sweatshirt. Adé Hakim is one of the most positive artists in the game and his constant output of good will continue to come back to him for the rest of the year.
Songs produced by Adé Hakim: LIKE ME, MIKE - PLANET, Sticking to My Roots
Axl Beats
If this list was based sheerly on streaming numbers, Axlbeats would be at the top. Axl found himself in 2019 getting placements with world renowned superstars such as Travis Scott and Drake. Luckily, Here at Sleepwalker we believe in more than numbers on the screen below the song, but we wanted to acknowledge AxlBeats’ accomplishments nonetheless. The London Based Producer’s career began in 2016, where he became locally popular for flipping Chicago style drill beats into more modern, new sounds. Axl then rode the drill wave all the way to Brooklyn, producing for artists like Sheff G, Fivio Foreign, and Pop Smoke, as well as A-List Celebrities Rich the Kid, and Jay Critch. Axl ended his 2019 incredibly strong, by producing Drake's drill inspired track “War”. If you haven’t heard Axl beats by now you may need to check and see if your radio is still working, but you will definitely hear him in 2020.
Songs produced by Axl Beats: Drake -War, Fivio Foreign - Wetty, Travis Scott feat Pop Smoke - GATTI
JWords
From Union City, New Jersey, JWords is rapidly making waves across the Hip-Hop and Electronic community. Releasing music as far back as 2015, JWords produces intricately structured soundscapes that incorporate digital synths with complex progressions, and old soul samples. The jazzy layout of her bass patterns, and mystical sounds that accompany them, reminds one of a chandelier of chimes flowing in a slight breeze. JWords can also switch it up, creating fast paced and unique sound structures that sound like futuristic versions of Salsa and Bachata, which she notes are heavy influences on her musical output. Her preference of hardware in music creation gives it a more genuine feel, and contributes to her next-level live performances. Listening to JWords feels like traveling through the ocean in an underwater spacecraft at 1000 mph, but the speed isn’t overwhelming, it's actually very soothing. Now a member of the NeverNormal Collective, JWords has been garnering attention throughout the past year. She’s worked with MIKE, Suzi Analogue, King Carter, and Nappy Nina, while also performing with other contemporary greats at live shows throughout New York City. She released her debut EP Sin Senal earlier this year and recently led an Ableton-sponsored beat making workshop. The momentum is only building for JWords, and 2020 seems like it will be her breakout year.
Songs produced by JWords: Stay Away, Shine <3, Numb feat MIKE
Hi-C
A member of the infamous Reptilian Club Boyz (RCB), Hi-C has been making waves in the underground as far back as 2013. Adopting various monikers like HighCee and C Boogie, the Richmond-based artist has always stood apart for his futuristic and majestic melodies, reminiscent of the soundtrack to a final boss battle in Ninja Gaiden, that are combined with hard-hitting 808s and kick patterns. This sound is leveled up by an insane assortment of sound effects that range from soundbites from Super Smash Brothers, SoulCaliber, Dragon Ball Z, Nascar races, thunderstorms, gun shots, applause and evil laughs. This past year, Hi-C’s talents seem to have been collectively noticed by the underground, landing him features and placements with fellow RCB members Diamnodsonmydick and Cartier’GOD, along with Surf Gang, Hook, Marcy Mane, and NolanBeRollin. Everything is lining up for Hi-C and RCB to reach massive heights in their musical content and impact on the general rap culture this year.
Songs produced by Hi-C: No Emotionzzz, DOMD feat Hook - BRATZ, DOMD feat SickBoyRari - King Lamagra
DamJonBoi
The Detroit Hip-hop scene saw a flourishing 2019. Reaping many of the benefits of this newfound popularity was the incredibly versatile and talented DamJonBoi. 2019 gave Jon placements on underground smash hits with talent like Teejayx6, Sada Baby, Kasher Quon, FMB DZ, Drego Baby, and Lil Beno. On top of all of his 2019 placements, he had a strong end of 2018 producing Drego & Beno’s “Recipe 2”, which has amassed over 5 million views on Youtube and a plethora more streams. Aside from producing, DamJonBoi has been laying down vocals of his own. His smooth voice and classic Detroit style inflection work amazingly in his songs, many of which showcase his lavish rockstar lifestyle. Needless to say, JonBoi is up now for 2020.
Songs produced by DamJonBoi - Super saiyan, Brainstorm Feat. Babyface Ray, Teejayx6 - Dark Web
GAWD
The 20 year old Richmond, Virginia native is one of the most hardworking artists in the game. Holding the largest discography of released songs on our list, GAWD has nearly 1,200 tracks just on his SoundCloud. With a vast amount of monikers including 65 Cent, Black John Stockton, DJ Lil Stank, and Lil Coochie Burp, GAWD has consistently been dropping great music since 2014. His production consists of Pharrel-like synths and chord progressions matched with signature distorted 808s that often fall in a simple 4/4 pattern. His addition of piano runs, harps, and video game effects to this formula elevates his sound to another level. Every GAWD beat is pleasing to the ear and always has a bounce, no matter how different they are from each other. Even though he has been on the scene for years, GAWD has gained a lot of attention this past year as his collaborations with fellow Richmond artist Babyxsosa have grown in popularity. On top of collaborations with Karmah and RCB, GAWD did a DJ session with Noble Spell in New York for Corpus Radio this past summer. It seems like he is finally getting the necessary recognition for years of hard work, and it's exciting to see what the rest of 2020 holds for him.
Songs produced by GAWD: 65 Cent - CHANGE TALK, Babyxsosa - EVERYWHERIGO, RCB - #bloodthisrsty #711
Visual Artists:
Nitetive Visuals
The 20 year old videographer based out of France has stood apart from the surge of artists producing intricate edits for the current output of music videos. Nitetive has been releasing video content since 2017, often consisting of minute long edits of rappers like A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert being put in alternate dimensions, video games or outer space. In 2019, Nitetive began to focus on producing full fledged music videos. Although he has shot and directed a good amount of videos, Nitetive has gained a reputation for his ability to edit footage. Collaborating with other visual artists including MarkoVisuals and fellow freshman Brick Productions, Nitetive has gotten to edit some of the most mind bending music videos of 2019 and 2020. Nitetive’s visuals consist of a fast paced barrage of glitches, rainbow styled effects, shattering glass and datamosh transitions, and 3D animations that place the viewer in an alternate reality. With footage that is often reversed, layered on top of one another, and switched between crystal clear and VHS quality, Nitetive’s videos are truly mind bending. The quick flashing of logos and important lyrics throughout his videos make the viewer feel like they’re watching a sped up hypnotization reel that’s subconsciously tricking them into becoming cool. In the past 6 months, he has worked with the likes of Pi’erre Bourne, SickBoyRari (Black Kray), Bladee, Cyrax and K$upreme. Nitetive seems to get better with every release, making 2020 exciting for what else he has in store.

If 2019 gives any indication as to how someone’s 2020 will go, then we should all keep our eyes peeled for Revenxnt this year. This Newark, NJ based visionary had a high point in 2019 of producing a Pusha T video for Vogue. Besides being a video artist, Rev also produces music (with placements like Sha Hef, Grimm Doza, and DA$H), is a prolific painter, and even dabbles in clothing design. A typical Revenxnt video consists of interesting colors, often double exposure shots and ambiguous angles, lots of adjusting focuses, and quick transitions. All these elements come together to create glitchy looking masterpieces that will undoubtedly stand the test of time. Recently he has made some masterful instant classic visuals with the likes of Medhane, Mavi, and Moh Baretta. Rev has an amazing internet presence, always tweeting his mind and uplifting his followers. A staple post of his will be a photo wad of money with the caption “IF YOU READING THIS YOU’RE GETTING MONEY TODAY” One thing that is for sure about is he will never stop hustling and never move backwards. I have no questions about 2020 being as big a year for Revenxnt as ever.

DVD CITY
Based out of Detroit, Michigan, the collective of visual artists have been putting out content since 2015. Originating as VHS Country, the group has stayed true to its roots putting out visual mixes that incorporate off-coloring VHS-like effects. Various clips are layered on top of one another and fast forwarded, reversed or flipped sideways with frequent freeze frame trails filling the screen. These clips include viral youtube videos, infomercials, orchestra concerts, anime, hockey fights, animals, Mandelbrot sets, Tekken, WWE clips, and Kung Fu movies. Those watching a DVD CITY exclusive may believe their youtube webpage has gone haywire with effects that make the viewer feel as if they are watching 20 VHS films at once that are being fast forwarded and rewinded at the same time, but at different speeds. In the past year, the collective has produced music videos and snippets for Akai Solo, Pink Siifu, GAWD, MIKE and JWords. They also did the visuals for Never Normal Records’ most recent annual 4/20 live stream. The collective is pushing audio/visual boundaries to a new length with their consistent output and in-tune video references that are bound to entrance any viewer.

Brick Productions:
The Richmond-based videographer has been releasing content since 2017, and immediately started gaining notoriety throughout the underground for his diverse capabilities in making any type of music video. Brick’s ability to incorporate close zooms, still frames, and 3D animations into footage that can be of the highest or lowest of qualities is practically unrivaled. This is enhanced by transitions that take advantage of intentionally shaky camera footage that is often at a high frame rate, making some of the cleanest videography out there. These quick and clever transitions engage the viewer, but at a pace that is perfect, giving them a moment to fully enjoy the beauty of each shot before it is followed by another. That being said, Brick can also flood the screen with a flurry of effects including colored trails following body movements, crows flying in the background, Dragon Ball Z characters quickly appearing, snow falling, and flames engulfing the screen. This past year, Brick Production’s diverse visual output has landed him collaborations with SickBoyRari (Black Kray), Hunned Mill, A$AP ANT, Trippie Redd, Cyrax and Bootychaaain. He has also worked with Utmost, a Richmond-based skating company, in their recent collaborations with DC Shoes and Round Two. Brick Production is steadily evolving, learning how to merge creative and off the wall editing with smooth and straightforward shots that find happy balances with every new release. The rest of 2020 is his for the taking.

Realest Photographer Ever
Being the most secretive artist on our entire list, it’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the Realest Photographer Ever started dishing out creative content. The artist made their debut under this name with frequent collaborator Zelooperz for his video “Bootleg” in mid 2019. Their use of footage that looks like it's been shot off an iphone, shows a minimalist yet effective approach to making videos. Clips of people doing regular activities, such as chilling on a couch, hanging out by a river, or walking through a city, is manipulated and arranged in a way that creates a brand new reality that is incredibly engaging. An entire screen can be full of different scenes from different places at different times, allowing one to find something new every time they watch a video. The Realest’s perfectly timed transitions, reverse playbacks and freeze frame layers eliminates any need for fancy visual effects. Their straight forward visual production has landed them collaborations with Earl Sweatshirt, Zelooperz and Caleb Stone this past year. Since the Realest has no accessible social media, other than a Youtube page with 3 videos on it, it is hard to tell what they have in store for the future, but whatever it is, it will be great.

1Drince
One of the members of the ClockWork Productions collective, 1Drince has been delivering top tier videography to DMV based artists since 2018. The Washington D.C. native has gained a lot of attention the past year for his frequent collaborations with fellow freshman Baby Fifty, directing 10+ videos for the rapper over the past 9 months. His use of menacing shots and close zooms will send chills up your spine. Drince’s smooth transitions and high quality footage perfectly captures the chaotic and deadly energy of the people he shoots often flashing drugs, money and weapons of all shapes and sizes at the camera. He is able to perfectly capture the feel of every song he does a video for, thoroughly enhancing it. Every time one hears a song, they automatically think of the Drince video that accompanies it. In addition to Baby Fifty, he’s worked with MoneyMarr, Baby 9eno, Q Da Fool, Big Flock, YungManny, and RXPeso this past year. Drince and the ClockWork Productions team continue to solidify themselves as the go to videographers for DMV artists, making it exciting to see what they have in store for the rest of the year.

She Skin
From Salem, Virginia, She Skin is the most versatile visual artist on our list. He started his visual output as far back as 2012, releasing creative and distinct skate videos. He soon transitioned into making music videos during the 2014/2015 SoundCloud Golden Era, providing music videos, visualizations, cover art, production and audio mixes for Divine Council and other Richmond-based artists. On top of videos, She Skin also established his own line of merchandiseincluding acrylic pieces, figurines and t-shirts.
Clearly, She Skin’s extensive catalogue sets him apart from the typical definition of a freshman, but he is on this list because it seems like he is finally gaining the recognition and praise that has been years past due. In addition, he seems to have found a signature look for his videos. His high frame rates and frequent zoom-ins are meshed with intentionally shaky camera work that cuts the artists in and out of frame at perfect moments. This is accompanied by sped up, slowed down, and chopped footage that creates a feeling in his videos that is unsettlingly soothing. She Skin has recently done videos for SickBoyRari (Black Kray) and hernbean5150, while releasing a series of minute long snippets from other Richmond artists including FHN Mook, Karmah, and Hunned Mill. He has also collaborated with Utmost throughout the years, providing pictures for the company’s most recent collaborations with Round Two and DC Shoes alongside fellow freshman Brick Productions. Even though She Skin has been a present and respected force in the underground for years, it seems like 2020 is shaping up to be the year his capabilities become known across the country and world.

In One Day in Toronto
You 'd better place on your strolling footwear: Seeing the best of Toronto in a day suggests covering a lot of region. This travel plan discovers the city's colonial origins before whisking you as much as Toronto's acme (the CN Tower). You'll then adhere to the waterfront to Old Town. Take comfort: There is lots of refreshing green space in the process.
Beginning: Bathurst Station and also a streetcar southern to Ft York Boulevard
1. Fort York
Today, Toronto is the fourth-largest city in The United States and Canada, with a skyline expanding ever before greater. 2 hundred years ago it had not been much more than a muddy outpost. Put behind Ft York's defensive walls sits Canada's biggest collection of Battle of 1812 buildings, which now houses interactive, historic displays. The rich, 7-acre site is animated by costumed historians keen to talk about whatever from the Napoleonic Wars to fur trade routes. Make certain to come by the mess kitchen, where you can taste the past: Darby Cakes, warm off the hearth, are baked in the working ovens from a recipe that dates to 1831. The location is most lively in summer season when the Ft York Guard marches the properties, shooting cannons.
2. Toronto Music Garden
Getting to the waterfront might be no delight, but it's totally worth it when you reach this beautiful and also relaxing environment-friendly space flanked by boardwalks, parks, as well as beaches. The Toronto Songs Garden, additionally gotten to by a comfy streetcar trip, was made by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma as well as landscape engineer Julie Moir Messervy to conjure up Bach's "First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello." It may appear highfalutin', but when you're straying the premises, it's just peaceful.
3. Rogers Centre
The domed multi-use stadium previously known as the SkyDome is the residence of MLB's Toronto Blue Jays. The formal scenic tour is for sporting activities fans only; otherwise, simply idly value Michael Snow's substantial sculptures of applauding (and also jeering) spectators on the exterior. If you wish to see a Blue Jays game, come back later in the day.
4. CN Tower
Taking the glass elevator up to the top of the Tower offers you a bird's- eye perspective on the city's general format, even if the sight from the elevations makes it all seem on a version scale. Obtaining your bearings is made easy by downloading and install the CN Tower's Viewfinder app, which assists recognize sites as well as areas. If it's a clear day, you might be able to see completely to Niagara Falls or perhaps throughout the boundary to New york city. But even if it's overcast, you can check out the stomach-churning glass floor. Lie level, I risk you, or just lift as well as down on it for a vertiginous excitement. Up the adrenaline ante by strapping on an EdgeWalk harness and circumnavigating the Tower's perimeter, some 1,136 feet in the air. Don't bother paying extra to visit the SkyPod, though-- it may be an additional 33 tales greater than the Search level, but that just makes the sites also tinier. Pro tip: Avoid the admission costs and soak in the sight by scheduling a table at the Tower's rotating Restaurant 360.
5. Harbourfront Centre
This is the sort of location where you can quickly invest a day, so you might need to tear yourself away to stay on track. Watch glassblowers, potters, jewelry makers, and also various other artisans at their work in the Craft Workshop. In winter season, you can skate on the lakeside rink; in summer season it ends up being a charming fish pond animated by kids bobbing around in small paddleboats while moms and dads unwind at the dockside dining establishment The Slip. The Centre has outstanding movie theater as well as shows, too the Power Plant Contemporary Art Museum, housed in a deactivated powerhouse.
6. Scotiabank Field
One wonderful aspect of walking back to the midtown core in this manner is that you can go across through the Scotiabank Arena, a far more enjoyable choice to various other busy and commonly traffic-congested courses. This sporting activities complicated is not just house to both the Raptors basketball team and also the Maple Leafs hockey team, but it likewise organizes blockbuster music shows; check out the photos of a few of the popular acts who have actually played here as you go through the passageway.
7. Union Terminal
This is among the city's underappreciated marvels. Toronto's holy place to trains is a Beaux Arts charm, and also it's worthwhile to go through the main hall, even if you're not jumping aboard a train. Appear to admire the floor tile ceiling developed by architect Rafael Guastavino. Until the age of mass air travel, Union Station was typically the top place new immigrants saw upon arrival in their brand-new home of Toronto. You've probably seen Union Station before, too-- it's starred in stacks of cameos in big-box flicks, consisting of Chicago and Suicide Squad. Head down to the Front Street Promenade, listed below street degree, for inexpensive consumes, consisting of handcrafted pasta and breads at Amano as well as exquisite sausages at Wvrst.
