Throwing myself back into the Nexomon brainrot since there's already a bunch of tidbits (and personal headcanons) to Metta's quirks and general attitude to anyone/everyone he interacts with and no one's taking the time or thought into mentioning them. And you know…To see if anything changes on his part in Nexomon 3, and I will keep pushing this agenda until the game finally comes out :)

To list a few interesting things mentioned in N1 (and definitely a long post ahead):

First the canon bits out of the way:

-Metta (and Nara) are over a million years old after Omnicron's initial invasion of the human world and after Ulzar killed the other CoO and Doggo Dad, with those two being the last living members of the family up until Nara’s (temporary) death in Extinction. Metta specifically mentions "waiting a million years" for his resurrection plan to finally come into fruition just before MC fights Omnicron in the main story, but it's mostly a 'blink and you miss it' nugget of information (same goes for Ulzar revealing Nexolord's/Metta's name in the Netherworld DLC one time).

-Metta lived in the Frozen Tundra for an undetermined amount of time, possibly when Juliet and Glacia were in their early childhood; with Juliet slowly but adamantly believing that he's a vampire (will explain later) and still reads cheesy YA vampire novels into adulthood, while Glacia admires him for his cold-hearted nature and extreme lack of empathy to other humans.

-It's not exactly specified when Micromon takes place in N1 (or when Project Pixekai goes bust), but Metta possibly gained Malk as a tutor/evil accomplice sometime during said-early childhood and after Malk left Pixekai a broken smoldering mess behind him; refurnishing a bunker in FT into a secret lab/research facility to study the properties of Nexomon and possibly laying the groundworks to the resurrection plan (and Metta becoming an master technician as well).

-Some time after Glacia gets appointed as Overseer, she's the only one who was made aware that the Champions (ie. the Omnicron fam) are not human, and even says aloud about these super-powered monsters bickering like children over who gets to fight the MC and stop them reaching Omnicron's Tower. Glacia later throws herself into the Netherworld and corrals the Wardens to her side in a attempt to "save" Metta from the clutches of death, release Omnicron in his stead, and make him become the real NexoLord instead of MC...To be clear, Metta wasn’t dead, and he was still alive two weeks before the Netherworld story and no one figured it out!

-Metta might of had another name before defeating Nexolord Remus and gaining the title as his namesake (or just opted to call himself Nexolord until he got the clout to go with it), which is somewhat fair since he finally got the experience of being an only child for the time being.

-While Metta was also shown to have sacrificed himself to finally revive Omnicron, the Netherworld DLC only shows the element-based siblings (Fona, Arqua, Ventra, Luxa, Grunda) stuck in Nightmares with their own Wardens and MC getting stuck with Ziegler after the really weird implication that MC released Omnicron on accident in that two week time span (even if it’s never shown or explained). Not to mention a “joke” headstone later found in Extinction that makes you double-guess if he even died in the first place…

-And while it's not explicitly mentioned, but Metta might've put together the Overseers to reflect his terrible opinions of his siblings, the same goes for him riding the high of being a leader and roping said-siblings into pretending to be humans until everything comes together. As for the Overseers: Ivan and Ira could relate to Fenrir/Fona, Remus with Nadine/Ventra, Hendrick with Merida/Arqua, Spencer with Zetta/Luxa, Khan with Deena/Nara, and Jack with Ulrich/Grunda. To me, Hilda would've been scouted to become an Overseer due to her psychic abilities, but quickly defected to save humanity in her own way (ie. turning them into spirits/ghosts). Glacia would definitely be considered Metta's (most true and loyal) Overseer cause of said cold-heartedness but also being one of the few humans besides Malk who understand his true motives and wholeheartedly accepts his plan on reviving Omnicron.

And now for the headcanons! >:D -Metta would've had an incredibly hard time adjusting to, or even stooping down to, creating a disguise for himself despite his hatred for humanity; same would possibly go with him learning to write and/or read for himself instead of staying in hiding for all eternity. Also in contrast to the rest of the Omnicron fam using their powers or a surplus of energy to create a human form, Metta is just a walking human-shaped balloon and his head is the only solid part of his body (even his eyes are the same color as his main Nexomon body. Glass/prism eyes perhaps?). It might also solidify Juliet's vampire theory if he didn't take the time or effort to fake natural body heat, or having absolutely nothing to do with physical contact ever despite living in the tundra; and maybe his unnatural features were made to make himself as intimidating as possible (in complete contrast to his cringe ass bowling-ball self).

-Metta's ahoge (the blue streak of hair) might work like a pull-tab to "unravel" his disguise and reveal his Nexomon form underneath (almost like a candy wrapper). It could've spread as a rumor between the grunts (or by Zetta to tease him), but zero people would even have the balls to do it in the first place for obvious reasons.

-While Metta would despise every human who ever breathes in his general direction, he might have a reasonable amount of respect to scientists/inventors (possibly from Malk and the Pixekai Project) and any tamers with exceptional skill and strength (Remus, Hilda, Khan, and Glacia), even if it's only to use them for ulterior motives. Definitely betting that he even trusted Glacia enough to go on multiple rants about his siblings; either about how much he hates them, their naivety of the human race, or how these uber-powerful descendants of Omnicron got killed by a single human in the first place (ie. Ulzar). And yes, given how smarmy and egotistical Glacia acts around others, it's canon in my heart.

-Metta might also enjoy food and literature but doesn't have the dignity to admit it due to said-hatred for humans. Might also be the reason why he put Hendrick in as a secret Overseer in Palmaya, both for his persuasion/mind games in recruiting more goons and his killer skills in cooking; discretely trying to recreate his recipes by the letter (or holding onto a recipe book or two) for self-validation in making something on his own.

-Speaking of the power of creation, Metta possibly made the Abyssal Tyrants as a side project along his initial Omnicron revival plan. I mean, he spent a million+ years to bring his dad back to life, but it's important to know in Extinction that the Abyssals appeared right after Omnicron's super-death. So who's to say that Metta also created his own line of Nexomon that follow his every command (or to scratch that itch of being King of Monsters himself)? From causing general mayhem (Braccus & Helevolk), picking off the weaker tamers hunting them (Inominox), willingly become cannon fodder (Pluvean), become scouts (Volcel & Caelesa) avoid human contact entirely (Rotramus), or make sure to kill two extremely specific psychics (Venefelis & Kroma); they follow the general scheme being as elusive and as unpredictable as possible just like their (possible) creator.

-And yes, I wholeheartedly believe that Metta created Byeol (possibly around the same time as Caelesa), either on complete accident or to hop on the Tyrant bandwagon in Nexomon Extinction. Whether it reflects his desires to always stay on top ("the star of the show") or the visual representation of jealousy over his new niece/nephew Solus taking Omnicron's throne instead of himself, who knows? Also personally believe that Byeol, ironically enough, wants to become human, possibly watching tamers from afar or putting themselves into battles as a form of "playing" to try and learn their behavior and skills. And I know I made another rant about it, but I’m pretty sure Byeol also has the ability to enter or manipulate dreams (either to look into a person’s mind or just mess with them for fun). Why else would a Normal-type Tyrant have a good chunk of Psychic-type moves at its disposal as well? Just some food for thought here…

I want Jonny to go on the podcast Keep it, one of the hosts Ira is also a gay man who went to catholic school who is not Catholic. Either Ira and Louis (another gay man) or their producers do a really good job researching their guests and they ask interesting questions not normally asked, I think they'd ask Jonny about being a former catholic school boy and now playing a catholic man

yeah i think it’s really important to have a good interviewer when you have a serious theme like ft (or for any type of media tbf) - i just mean that the characters and the story are based on very real lived experiences of people in a very shameful part of human history, so if the interviewers are good, i would love to see an ft segment in their podcast

i remember for example during bridgerton press that there was this one interviewer who asked such ridiculous questions to jonathan and you could feel his annoyance through words at times. they tried to tie anthony’s grief to jonathan’s sexuality and i think crossed the line into what he very rightly considered personal and unrelated to anthony, and kinda called them out on it

a summary by chapters of freddie dawson’s life / main verse ( TW : long post —— ft. mentions of domestic abuse, violence and general abuse, child abandonment, torture, human trafficking, forced s ex work ).

𝐕 . 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — there’s freedom to and freedom from ( prequel ). freddie gallagher, the wife of james a. gallagher, is a s ex worker within the ranks of notorious mobster victor cullen ( her uncle ) in the el paso, texas area. she is forced into the profession as she is forced into her abusive marriage with jimmy gallagher, his right hand man. her only salvation at the time is her friendship with ira dunham and the vague protection kel mehmeti, victor’s business partner and a rival of jimmy’s, can offer. at the age of twenty-eight, after finding out about her unwanted pregnancy and almost dying at the hand of jimmy, fred decides to ask for kel’s help to get away and disappear. he helps her stage her death, and fred runs away: first she gives birth in an arizona hospital where she gives her baby up for adoption, and eventually relocates to the town of ashford, california.

𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — hope is a dangerous thing ( arc one ). a semblance of a life is gained slowly, achingly, bit by bit, in a town that looks too much like purgatory not to make her wish for atonement. it’s not heaven, despite the name of the place she first sets foot inside: st. peter’s, peter andrews’ bar. he takes her in, gives her food, and a job —— she takes the name of freddie dawson, and with a fake id begins rebuilding herself. step by tiny, immensely modest step, she finds her space among the burnt ruins of the town of ashford: she adopts a cat, she buys a car. she begins to live again. but she remains one foot out of the door, always: a fear in her lungs won’t let her truly breathe in. she looks at the horizon, she’s waiting for a storm.

𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — happiness is a butterfly ( arc two ). he comes in with the rain, and despite the fear that won’t let go of her, she lets him drown her. kal anderson takes her by surprise, a hurricane with no warning —— she falls in love, harder than she ever has, too fast to hold herself steady. it’s powerful, it’s unbelievable, it’s everything she’s craved: a passion so strong it annihilates her fear, a belonging so certain, so true that she can hardly tell where she ends and he begins. for a year she is his, and he, hers —— by the fourth month he’s moved into her place and she swears to god she doesn’t need anything other than all this love, all the tidal waves of it, for the rest of her life. through him she meets charlie jenkins, kal’s apprentice and coworker, reckless and young and as chaotic as the brother she never had, and severin moran, kal’s old friend, also reckless and also chaotic, but somehow, she senses, broken enough to be recognized as her similar: a kindred spirit. for the first time, freddie dawson is happy. she’s truly, desperately happy.

𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — covered in scars a canyon deep ( arc three ). but kal has secrets, and ways of escaping her, and one day his demons catch up with him — a demon, specifically, by the name of kafka, who murders charlie’s family and barely even leaves him alive. when confronted with the bloodshed kal is forced to admit the truth: he was never the charming mechanic come from up north, but a mercenary. there is a hit on fred’s head, a claim raised by her uncle who wants her back —— and he, poor kal anderson, is none other than ilias abørn, gun for hire who’s come to collect his bounty. except he’s fallen for it too, and the murder of charlie’s family was kafka way to snap ilias out of his lovesick reverie, send a deliberate message: that his place was not burning under the californian sun, but in the sickening darkness of the sugar factory where they both were raised. still, in spite of the lies somehow fred knows — the wildifre burning them up is real. the love, the annihilation of it all is real. and she swears she can forgive him, they can run away, they can make it work —— but one day he’s gone and she realizes: she’s drowned in him for real, and she can’t swim back up to the surface.

𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — maybe god can be on both sides of a gun ( arc four ). ilias goes back to new york, not just to leave her behind but to face his demons. she learns, without really meaning to, that his demons have the shape of a crime syndicate in which he was forced as a child, by which he was trained and raised under the rule of one sociopath by the name of poe. it is him that ilias goes to face, expecting punishment for the way he so spectacularly screwed up his assignment. some of ilias’ fellow mercenaries come asking for fred’s help: evander, whom fred had met before, introduced to her by kal as an old friend. randy, perhaps the most empathetic of ilias’ siblings. lenore, who had been his jailer and his lover before, but still cared enough about him to ask for fred’s help. they lead fred to the sugar factory where he was raised and being held, and together they free him from his torture. it is the moment in which she first realizes the width of her desperate devotion, the lengths she’d go to for him, how her heart has found, in the end, a home — and will refuse to let it go. for about two weeks they try to make it work, escape together and find a real chance at life: them, charlie. two weeks in, ilias gives up and, in order to protect her, disappears: in the end, it turns out he is much better than fred ever was at martyrdom. she tries to move on from there, but her heart is weakened, she has no strength left. she decides, in the end, that the only think she can do is move somewhere the ghost of him won’t follow. fred asks randy to take care of charlie, and leaves.

𝐕 . 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — how to draw a line between wrath and mercy ( arc five ). hope is a stubborn, flickering flame —— though it dims, hers doesn’t go out. for eight months she lives in kansas, vaguely attempting a new life, and failing, always on the verge of utter despair. then one day a note, a cryptic one, is left in her mailbox, along with ilias’ dog tags. there’s hints of a trip they’d taken once before, to the tennessee mountains, and despite her heart being so tired of hoping, despite the ache the thought of him continuously brings, fred decides to trust her instincts: she gets in the car, she climbs up the mountain, and finds him there in the cabin they’d shared once before. reunited, she takes the time to nurse his wounds, to heal him, to devote herself to the care of the only thing she ever truly loved. and in the meantime they begin thinking, and desiring, ardently, a way to be free —— free to love each other, and have a pitiful chance at a future. a plan is hatched in which, thanks to ira’s help, fred will infiltrate victor’s gang and gather enough material on him to lead his operation to an end. for over a year she remains under the employment of victor, acting as his assistant and all the while gathering as much material as possible to eventually hand him in to the authorities — all with the outside help of ilias, ira, randy and what few allies they can count on. the end comes abrupt, and bloody like every good ending.

𝐕 . 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 — kill the angels if they’re keeping guard ( arc six ).  the rest is a greek tragedy —— victor finds ilias, victor takes him, victor tortures him. once more, it’s fred’s life within his hands: and when victor puts a gun in her hands and orders her to shoot ilias, the love of her life, believing freddie to have been corrupted for good, freddie puts an end to the story, and shoots her uncle instead. somehow, she and ilias make it out. somehow they survive. scattered and broken and drenched in blood, but they survive. over the years, with randy and charlie they relocate to canada, in alberta, under the fake identities of ed and lucie turner, and they find a balance —— between terror and beauty, between rage and devotion. there in the cold, they try to earn themselves a piece of purgatory. it’s not a happy ending, no —— their demons still lurk, and the night gets darker every day. but they have each other, and what’s left of them is two hearts refusing to give in for good. once a wildfire, now the timid candle sitting on their windowsill at 2 am, while they hold each other, sleepless. a tiny light, still burning.

Alrighty! We’re combining two prompts today. Day 25, plus an alternate prompt because this bird boi deserves a lot of comfort. It’s installment 9 of Ira’s story. This time ft. Nola again. Masterlist is here. @imagination1reality0 @just-a-whumping-racoon-with-wifi @whump-me-all-night-long

Prompt: Comfort, a lil Disorientation. CW: Whumpee kept in a cage, non-human whumpee, restrained. Other than that just a lot of fluff and comfort. Cause he deserves it.

Ira didn’t know how long it had taken for the drugs to wear out of his system- but he was glad when they did.

It left him feeling tired, and frankly a little disoriented. He still felt the hands- everyone touching him- like ghost waves across his skin. 

They hadn’t given him any more clothes- and he shivered in the small cage and whined as he tried to wrap his wings around him once more. His arms were chained to the bars of the cage behind him, locked tightly together and pinning his wings behind his back. 

Ira flinched when someone walked into the room once more. 

But it was only one person this time- and the footsteps were smaller- softer, as cloth shoes padded against the ground instead of solid boots.

Ira pried his head off of his chest and looked up to see the one person in this terrible place that didn’t make him feel like crying.

“N-Nola?”

The strange language still felt weird on his tongue, but he was glad he could at least communicate something that simple to her.

She smiled and crouched down in front of the cage.

“Hey Ira.” She waved one hand and the sleeve of her dress pulled up to reveal the bandage still wrapped around her arm for where Sir- from where he had cut her.

The girl moved to the side of the cage so she was sitting next to him where he was curled up in the back corner.

“I-I’ve got something for you. It’s- it’s just water- but I think it’ll help get the drug out of your system.”

He recognized the bowl through the bars of the cage and flinched back. The last thing he’d been given in a bowl just like that had made him feel- it had-

No…

“No--no.. Please no-”

He shook his head and shrunk away from her.

“Look Ira-” she placed the bowl on the floor in front of him so he could see it better. “It’s just water.- Water.”

He looked into the bowl. It sure did look just like water. 

“It’s water.”

Water? He felt the word around on his tongue.

“W-water?”

She smiled as the word came from his mouth.

“Good!” She took the bowl from out of the cage and held it in front of herself. “It’s good- water- good.” She took a small sip, keeping eye contact with him and then placed it back down.

“See? Water is good.”

He eyed the bowl and realized how thirsty he was. Clearly if she drank it, that would be okay, right? 

She lifted the bowl up closer to his face and he let her give him the water. Ira took a few sips- immediately noticing the relief it brought to his parched mouth- and then tried not to gulp the whole thing down at once- instead savoring each sip as it washed over his tongue. He didn’t flinch as her hand went to the back of his head to keep him steady. 

Soon the bowl was set back down on the ground, completely empty.

Ira sighed and breathed in deep.

“Water- water good.”

A twinge of a smile crept up Ira’s face as the girl chuckled. 

Good- that word stuck out to him. The water was good- Nola was- Nola was good.

“Ira- good?” He asked- hoping it meant what he thought it did.

Nola looked taken aback. She ruffled fingers gently through his hair and he huffed in contentment. After a moment she nodded.

“Yes, Ira. Ira’s good- very good.”

The young creature nodded his head- pleased with himself.

“N-nola good.” He stated matter of factly.

“Thank you Ira.”

“Th-thank you?”

Nola nodded, and turned to sit in front of him so he could see her better. She pulled her dress over her knees as she sat criss cross on the floor. She cocked her head to the side, studying the creature.

“You’re- you’re a lot smarter than they’d like to think. Ira do you- do you wanna learn some more words?”

He didn’t know what she meant, but it sounded good. It sounded- okay.

Ira nodded his head. 

Nola smiled.

“Good.”

By the end of an hour or two, Ira had a small vocabulary that he could communicate with. 

Yes, no, thank you, please, help, stop, wait, good, and a few others.

Nola was right, he was smarter than everyone thought, he caught on fast.

Each word she brought to him he tested carefully on his tongue before speaking it out loud. 

The boy would never dare to use them in front of Sir- but here, alone, just the two of them, he could find some comfort in knowing that someone could understand him.

Even if it was just a little.

Ira felt his eyes drooping- not even knowing how tired he had become.

“Ira- Ira sleep?” He asked.

He leaned back against the bars of the cage, trying to adjust his arms behind him for some sort of comfort. His eyelids drooped heavier and he mumbled out contentment as Nola’s fingers found their way back to his hair. 

“Yes Ira, go ahead and sleep. You’ve done good- you’re very good.”

Nola thought that she could see a faint smile spreading across his face.

He leaned his head against her hand as she scratched around the base of his horns. The shaggy blue locks fell around her fingers- she was amazed at how incredibly soft his hair had stayed over these past few days.

“Nola, stay?”

The girl wanted to sob.

He didn’t deserve to be here. 

He was too sweet, to kind and innocent, too young. 

She didn’t care that he wasn’t technically a human. He- he still had cohesive thoughts and feelings, and needs, and- and-

And he deserved better.

“Nola stay.” She sighed as he curled his face up into her hand. 

“Nola will stay as long as she can…”

And then the boy drifted off into sleep.

-Eunice is a timid person, not one for much social interaction. Around others, she gets rather flustered and panicked. This doesn’t mean that she doesn’t want friends, however. She’ll try to converse in conversation, but her stuttering does grow worse when this happens, and she gets rather light headed and dizzy.

-Whenever going out into public, she always thinks someone is murmuring something about her or staring at her. She’s terrified of being the center of attention.

-She’s very anxious and is a worrywart, always worrying about something.

-She rarely gets angry. Eunice does get upset easily, though. She’s extremely sensitive.

Memory Marker: Remembrance of Things Past

Any marker to ‘9/11’ must sit in relation to polar opposites: the capitalist drive to extract dollars per sq ft on the site and a desire to leave space for memory of this atrocity. But are these truly irreconcilable opposites or could a creative architect – or team (important distinction) – reconcile these goals partly or even fully?

I won’t dwell on questions of how the site is being parcelled up – the sadly separate competitions for ‘building’ and ‘memorial’ – but the separation is relevant background information. The ‘building’ competition came first probably due to its size and thus fiscal importance. The ‘memorial’ was slotted in afterwards – eight typically minimalist ‘spaces’ shortlisted mostly using water and light. If a creative mind was behind rebuilding this site the two could have been married together.

Pre-Modernism memorials were mostly formal objects – think of Lutyens’ Thiepval Arch in the Somme, memorial to the First World War dead. Modernism brought us simple forms – the Vietnam Memorial wall in Washington DC stands out, more recently Libeskind’s Memorial Garden outside his Berlin Museum.

Memorials are described as being places to reminisce, but not normally too vividly: no overt references to falling bodies will appear in the Twin Towers Memorial. To avoid hurt they seem to retract from death and tragedy into abstract pathos or general formality. Memorials inhabit a twilight zone between architecture and sculpture; typically linked to taboo issues – here ‘atrocity’ – they sometimes suffer from lack of critique.

Back to the opening premise: can Libeskind et al make the dollar generator into the memorial, can ‘Freedom Tower’ itself have the required potency? The foot of Manhattan is already a powerful marker for many US immigrants, including members of my own family. Arriving on a ship seeing the towering lights of Mammon and the symbolic Statue of Liberty. The latter has a dual purpose – icon and climbable tourist attraction: how could the ‘Freedom Tower’ express both poles of its duality?

For a start the height of 1776 ft, resonating with America’s Year of Independence, fell flat for me: I expected it to change post-competition and so it did, unusually revised up! The impression is of lip service to the tragedy whilst the fiscal side is worked up in the background: the result is an aim to simply parcel off a patch of prime real estate purely for memory. The Ground Zero site is owned by Larry Silverstein and, with George Pataki, the City Governor, he ran an international architecture competition to find an architect / scheme for the site. The shortlist was whittled down eventually to Daniel Libeskind – radical Polish-born architect – and Rafael Vinõly – a conservative but contemporary architect born in Mexico.

But cries of ‘sell-out to Silverstein’ – especially from relatives – drown out reason: like Swiss Re for London, [after years of IRA bombs] is not the burgeoning tower of real estate the most fitting memorial? It should express city, embody confidence, and emanate determination to progress. The people who died, were primarily part of the bullish capitalist drive to make money: why pretend otherwise, wrap up reality with the cotton wool of disconnected abstraction?

Central to the memorial is symbolism and inscription. From Stonehenge to the humble gravestone we see this. For example Kahn’s 1968 abstract memorial to the ‘Six Million Jewish Martyrs’ proposed for Lower Manhattan contained both – the central pier served as an ohel (chapel), complete with inscription. The written word introduces the personal – the name you can point to, relate to. An unspoken rule of architecture is ‘good buildings don’t need signs’ and, by extension, ‘words’. Yet no architectural memorial seems complete without inscription. ‘Set in stone’ is a phrase to suggest permanency – rootedness is a useful aura when suffering loss. Hope, life after death.

Memorials also of course allow the State, organisations, people to make a statement, exert power, show respect. Just as arguments exist around the extent of ‘respectful’ space around city cathedrals – for example the years of vigorous debate around Paternoster Square’s relationship to St Paul’s Cathedral – so the same applies for memorials: do monuments really need space? Discussion re this site seems to have revolved around the notion of space given over to ‘memorial’: space = respect.

This corollary comes from the public / private opposition that has characterised debate on urbanism for decades: the more ‘public realm’, the greater the developer’s generosity and perceived benefit to the populace. The demand for rent creates maximum development by default. The Public appears to want ‘sacrifice’ where possible. Here the sacrifice could be a viewing platform at the top of ‘Freedom Tower’ a contemplative pool or a square for parades and gathering. The clever bit (in developers’ eyes) is dressing the necessary space around the building (building laws related to light, etc.) as the ‘sacrificial space’.

Monuments were essentially ‘monumental’ in the past [sounds obvious!], hence the textual linkage, i.e. grand and impersonal, arching over singularity to create plurality and collectivist aspirations but mostly subjugation. The Arc de Triomphe, Nelson’s Monument, the Monument to the Great Fire of London all rise above an urban context and dominate the human.

What validates ‘monument’, differentiates it from sculpture or building? Does the ‘title’ matter if you realise there exist ‘living structures’ (The London Eye) and ‘functionless buildings’ (Edinburgh’s National Monument)? The Ground Zero site will be home to one of the most observed memorials ever, trying to come to terms with huge, spectacularly vicious loss of life, and in one of the World’s largest and most popular cities. New York almost epitomises what we think a city should be. The memorial will be a marker for more than atrocity: it will also become a marker for cities, architecture and society.

The agenda of the people, the owner/developer, city and state may all vary. Monuments generally use scale, heroic forms, emblems/icons, metaphor and allusion. The Marker could synthesize function and memory and be emblematic of New York. Empirical institutions and situations of the city stand as allegories of the invisible substance of society as a whole.

Politically the site has to represent unbroken spirit, confidence to progress, unhindered by fears of terrorism but without creating what Giedion termed ‘devaluation of symbols’, empty gestures of civic monumentalism. Monuments should be catalytic. Tension between the ‘opposites’ could be played up or down. Aspirations of State could transmit to surging height or connotations of peace and freedom.

In Rossi’s ‘The Architecture of the City’ he defines monuments as ‘primary elements in the city which are persistent and characteristic urban artifacts. They are distinguished from housing, the other primary element in the city, by their nature as a place of symbolic function, and thus a function related to time, as opposed to a place of conventional function, which is only related to use’. A monument is dialectically related to the city’s growth.

In these days of superfast media the permanence of solid physical memorial may be a welcome antidote, but memorial possibilities have multiplied if NY wanted a more imaginative zeitgeist marker. Loops of crash footage on a massive screen, raining mannequins projected from above, the smell of kerosene and worse, screams and sirens blasted around the site complete with multi-screen slivers of reaction from bereaved families. However, this is not a horror film-set but a place of reconciliation for the bereaved, for East and West, conservative and radical.

Libeskind is working on a book fittingly about ‘tragedy, memory and hope, and the way architecture can reshape human experience’: his asymmetric tower ostensibly follows the Statue of Liberty so unless the forces of commerce puncture this concept, we will have iconoclastic towers forming a lop-sided symbolic gateway. Neither forms a traditional abstract solid, the obelisks, pyramids and towers of the past. The Twin Towers form modern day icons blasted into people’s minds. The Towers were considered by many to be ugly, but they will be a hard act to follow. Memory is what matters most, not built form.

* In 1946 New York State Legislature set up a WTC Corporation to analyse such a facility. The World Trade Centre idea formed in 1960* and preliminary drawings were drawn up by SOM, who slipped in behind Libeskind 43 years later (via David Childs). Michigan-based Minori Yamasaki and Emery Roth & Sons completed the Twin Towers between 1966 and 1973. Yamasaki had over a hundred schemes, one being a single 150-storey tower. Towers 1 & 2, nicknamed ‘David & Nelson’ after the supportive Rockefeller Brothers became quintessential New York symbols, appearing on a large proportion of postcards.

Freedom Tower New York – Site of World Trade Center Ground Zero, Lower Manhattan 2004- Daniel Libeskind Architects + David Childs of SOM Architects Controversial towers to replace the World Trade Centre skyscrapers lost to New York in 2001. The main skyscraper by Libeskind was to be a significant number of feet high – 1,776 ft – to mark a key American date in history – United States Year of Independence; the building was largely handed over to architect David Childs. Designed to be the tallest tower in the world for the site leaseholder – real estate developer Larry Silverstein. The angular design is typical for Libeskind but here echoes the Statue of Liberty. A Snohetta building was also due to appear but the situation is in a state of flux, more online soon – 2006.

Daniel Libeskind was commissioned to design the Freedom Tower after a strongly contested World Trade Center design competition in Feb 2003, beating architects such as Norman Foster and in the end winning a two-strong shortlist.
