Good Lord, Ma'am, you are simply too big for a backyard fruit tree. All of her branches are bent and hanging heavy with apples. I absolutely MUST get some cuttings to root next spring and clone her. I would be devastated if this tree, obviously a 'sport' (mutation) because she sure as hell isn't what I thought I was buying, ever died without having progeny.

Lovely, gloomy, wet day to be picking apples. And getting repeated cold showers.

If you're wondering, that basket is pretty good size, but the fact that some of the apples are HUGE makes it look smaller. I'm going to start making applesauce today, and can some. I'd love to wait 'til a time when K was home, so we could do it together, but I don't think that'll be practical with how difficult her school semester is. My aunt who loves canning projects is currently traveling in Canada; she has dual citizenship and a ton of French Canadian relatives.
So, just me and the apples this morning.

Like Children
Sometimes Reiji wonders if things would have been different if they hadn't met each other as children.
Not if he hadn't ever made it to Academia or if Serena had never tried to escape. Asking either of them to keep from searching would have been the same as asking them not to breathe. One way or another, they'd have found their way.
But that didn't mean their paths were always destined to cross. Who would he have been without seeing her burning determination to cut a path for herself? An hour later, and he might not have been able to offer his hand so freely. She would have been a soldier first and foremost, not another child also striving for things beyond her grasp.
Even when Serena came to Standard, teeth and ambition beared, he had still seen that girl who believed in him so easily first, before recognizing the enemy she had become.
He tried bringing this up to her once, but the only response he got was a dismissive huff.
"We're not children anymore." She talked as if she were correcting a simple mathematical error. Time flowed in one direction. After everything they had gone through with the war and their fragile peace, they certainly couldn't be called children anymore.
But when she said, "I don't know where I'm going, but I can't stay here," Reiji still followed her with the same naive yet hopeful trust he had felt all those years ago.

One Piece Chapter 1064 - Initial Thoughts
And we return
It would seem that Oda's opted to dual-wield this Vegapunk arc to catch up with Law a bit. There is some fear in the air, but let us see what develops
Side note though: PLEASE FUCKING TAG YOUR SPOILERS!!!
Honestly I've already been spoiled on 2 things yesterday from someone uploading raw scans without hiding it via 'keep reading' or using the spoiler tag, do better. It's as easy as this
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release Also
I guess the cover story has a different time frame since Augur was the one who accompanied Aokiji to Whole Cake Island to capture Pudding
At the very least Aokiji is looking good in the outfit, though I did like his drifter look
We go straight into Law vs Blackbeard as Law orders his crew to look after the ship
Law's quick to used his Awakened moves, R-Room slices Stronger horizontally so negate the wings, much to Blackbeard's shock
Blackbeard though continues to be effective with Whitebeard's old fruit, his shockwaves even send pressure to the floor below
Ah the exploding apples came back
Shachi used Water Gun!?
Alright Heart Pirates I see you, seems Law's crew are like Fish-Men in that they're versed in aquatic combat
As the crew take aim at Blackbeard's ship, Bepo uses his hearing to warn Jean Bart of Augur's sniping
Bart's finally getting used, providing the density to tank Augur's bullets as Law prepares K-Room
Shock Wille to Blackbeard really does a number because of the Damage Stack, he's even KO'd for a bit (reminder this took Big Mom down a bit too)
Augur warps to Teach so he doesn't fall into water, he suggests returning to the ship but Blackbeard ain't leaving empty handed
Law does make a point on how having a bunch of DF commanders can be risky, but Teach - reminder that he seems very versed in Devil Fruit lore - says the risks are worth the reward
As the Heart Pirates assault Blackbeard's ship from below, we go into the prisons to see Pudding
She's at the very least not frightened, her third eye is on display as well. Though the Big Mom alive status is still a question mark, Pudding believes she'll be back but others believe Big Mom's dead
Blackbeard looks to whip out his Dark-Dark Fruit powers, likely to negate Law's fruit, but we don't see the rest because we cut to Akainu
As he gets reports on Teach and Law's fight he laments the difficulties of being Fleet Admiral. Man isn't really the type to want to sit by and do nothing after all, though if he was with the Gorosei he'd be Lulusia-ing that island so probably for the best
Back to Luffy's group, the Police Pacifista has stopped its assault, thanks to Bonney's fruit changing their ages
70 Year Old Luffy looks more out of the bad timeline (I know that one is 60 years old but he does look a bit older than that) than the good one where he ages like Garp, Chopper doesn't look like either timeline since he's just frail. Bonney and Jinbe were put into kid form
Both Luffy and Jinbe do have valid points about Bonney's reaction to the Pacifista though
Jinbe goes further into talking about what he knows about Kuma's past, one Bonney's ellipses does imply to be falsified, according to him Kuma was a tyrant of the Sorbet Kingdom who was deposed by his people and turned to piracy
When he was caught and revealed to be a Revolutionary, he agreed to become a Warlord to serve his sentence, as long as he also submitted to Vegapunk's body modifications and cloning
Bonney does make a point in refuting that Kuma'd agree to become a mindless cyborg, and from the vibe we get from Kuma we have to agree
Bonney, having picked up a laser sword, also lashes out at the 'tyrant' part, noting how Kuma hated the government and must've been coerced - we better be getting that flashback
Turns out that Luffy and co are in Vegapunk's scrapyard, a place for all the rejected inventions
Since Kuma's mindless, Bonney claims that Vegapunk is no different to a murderer, and even though Vegapunk is apparently from a 'special race', it doesn't justify their actions
Still though, the ass shot is unnecessary, I mean it's a nice ass but still, time and place
Luffy and co got changed back to their normal ages too btw
Our next section is with the rest of the crew as Lilith rockets up to the skies
The rest of the crew get a look at Egghead from above, but they're going straight to the research lab in the skies
Punk Records is clearly written inside the giant egg, wonder if it's relevant
Lilith seems to know of Luffy's activities down below too, is there a hive going on or just comms?
Zoro and Brook decide to stay on the ship, which is odd since Zoro had that request
Franky is loving all this though, and even gets to experience Skypeia's island clouds, which Vegapunk can manufacture
Before entering Lab 0, it's time for some new threads
Okay so, like the boys' outfits, even Franky because he's got the Star Trek glasses but his hair will be mistaken for his eyes, but again can the women wear something that's not basically underwear? A skirt or just a jumpsuit like Lilith's wearing would've worked
That being said Robin back in the leather jacket is a plus, it's just the lower half I'm griping about, would've gone full leggings with Robin and a skirt for Nami (and the short shorts for Bonney as I mentioned last time)
Sanji how can you know what Aloha means there is no Hawaii...
Shaka meanwhile is on the phone, noting how he expects to be assassinated soon
But it turns out he's talking to Dragon, which is where Oda drops a break
So unfortunately, the Dragon cliffhanger was one of the things I was spoiled on, along with the Pudding appearance, but it does invite the idea that there is indeed a Revolutionary Vegapunk, and it seems it's likely Shaka.
Oda this time split his story into 3 mini bits where he's enticed us on each part. He's made a lot of effort now to show that Law's crew are able to hold their own - some satisfaction must come out of him after all the memes made - which is pretty impressive. I still don't think they'll win, with the fact that Burgess has gone quiet and we don't know what other Blackbeard crew members are present, heck we didn't even see Coby even though he's apparently a prisoner too.
With Luffy's group we're getting the Kuma lore and Bonney has won Luffy to her side for now, but it does lead to wonder if they'll find the Stella and learn new information. Seeing bad timeline Luffy at 70 is a bit worrisome but I guess you can't judge anything with Bonney's power, interesting though that she can bypass Pacifista by changing her age. We will need to get that Kuma flashback though to learn the truth, since it's clear all won't be what it seems.
And on the rest of the crew we're involving a Vinsmoke, two inventors, a weather manipulator via one of these inventions and a Revolutionary to meet with Shaka, who seems to be tied to the Revolutionaries and the Straw Hats too. I wouldn't put it past Oda to use this as a platform for both upgrades and MADS lore for Sanji. It's a shame Zoro and Brook are sitting out, I guess the Vegapunk threads wouldn't work for them, but someone will have to watch the ship. Once again though, the women outfit choices to have them all in underwear is irksome, I don't care if it's a 'battle suit' it just feels unrealistic, especially since no other inhabitants we've seen have this fashion. I dunno maybe Oda will change the outfits for when a fight occurs but it just seems a little too skimpy for the scenario.
But it was still a good chapter, maybe not as good as some previous but Oda does seem to be cooking something for 1065, he likes his round numbers after all. But we'll have to wait until after the break.

My Vision for the Ominous Babysitters Club
Based on this post.
Kristy Thomas makes a decisive move in founding the Babysitters Club, then continues to amass power, assets, and allies for most of the series (as well as sworn enemies). In #100: Kristy’s Downfall, she overplays her hand and is toppled from her position of power. She spends the last thirty-one books clawing her way back to the top, embittered and more tyrannical than ever.
Mary Anne Spier is a sensitive soul, more vulnerable than the rest of the club to demonic possession, life-changing encounters with eldritch beings, and the accidental acquisition of psychic abilities. Her false lover, low-level wizard Logan Bruno, senses her potential powers and jealously tries to keep her down through gaslighting. (Notable examples include his kidnapping of her cat, Tigger, and an incident where he swapped out two of her babysitting charges with eggs enchanted to look like real children.) After she gains confidence by getting a cute new haircut, she gets the upper hand in their relationship. She soon sees through his small-minded manipulations, but decides to keep him around...for now. She grows equally weary of Kristy’s authoritarian ways, leading her to mount an explosive counter-attack in #131: The Fire at Mary Anne’s House.
Claudia Kishi seems like a carefree, creative, junk-food-loving teenager, but in reality she’s a hostage to terrifying forces beyond her control. Her parents sometimes coldly refer to her as “the subject,” her older sister Janine is a sorceress of astounding talent and uncertain morals, and her old friend Kristy Thomas has threatened her into joining the BSC and letting the club meet in her room three times a week. Her only true friend is her grandmother, Mimi...until jaded city girl Stacey McGill arrives in Stoneybrook. Claudia tends to bury her head in the sand about the more uncanny aspects of her life, instead focusing on her art and more immediate threats, such as serial killers and murderous children. She’s forced to reckon with the supernatural, though, when she descends into hell in #106: Claudia, Queen of the Underworld. With the help of Janine, her eventual ally, she soon rejoins the living and embraces hedonism.
Stacey McGill flees a troubled past in New York City, only to become enmeshed in the byzantine schemes of the BSC in an attempt to help her new friend Claudia. As the series progresses, Stacey becomes more and more convinced that Kristy must be taken down, but her moral misgivings (as well as her string of dysfunctional romances, troubled relationship with her divorced parents, and struggles to manage her Type 1 diabetes) keep her from ever making a decisive move. In #83: Stacey Defects, she openly speaks out against Kristy and leaves the BSC. When life on the outside proves cold and purposeless, she hatches a scheme to ingratiate herself with Kristy again and bring her down for good. Her arc ends on an ambiguous scene in which she quietly enjoys some “cookies sweetened with fruit juice,” leading some readers to speculate that Kristy had her assassinated.
Dawn Schafer was originally conceived as a horror-movie Final Girl, a stalwart everyteen who defended her charges from Stoneybrook’s more prosaic villains (kidnappers, obscene phone callers, and a couple of masked murderers); she was meant to serve as a contrast to her eventual stepsister, the ethereal and insecure Mary Anne. As the series progressed, though, Ominous Ann M. Martin and her spooky ghostwriters ended up using Dawn whenever they wanted to try out cool new ideas. Although the results are often fascinating, the consistency of Dawn’s character suffers; however, some readers argue that Dawn’s unstable characterization is a deliberate choice that contributes to the uncanniness of the series. Her books can be split into roughly four types: straightforward slashers (#5: Where Are the Children, Dawn?); psychological horror with strong feminist/environmental/political themes (#84: Dawn on the Blacklist); creepy California-set stories with lots of drug imagery, macabre Hollywood history, and cameos from serial killers (#23: Dawn and the False Promise of the Golden West); and books that are completely dominated by Mary Anne (#31: Dawn’s Eldritch Stepsister). In one of the most optimistic books in the series, Dawn finally moves to California for good to escape Kristy’s influence and live that Francesca Lia Block life; less satisfyingly, she temporarily returns several books later, in an obvious attempt to get readers to check out the Ominous California Diaries, in which Dawn becomes an amateur sleuth who focuses on serial murders.
Mallory Pike is a combination Byronic-Kafkaesque heroine, simultaneously convinced that she is too brilliantly unconventional for normal society and that God personally despises her. She constantly rails against her cruel fate, which includes constant drudgery as the eldest of eight children, intermittent money troubles, the vicious snobbery and contempt of her peers, debilitating illness, encounters with the surveillance state, and the suspicion that she’s a talentless hack. Even when dealing with malevolent clones or a cursed book, the true horror of a Mallory book is always being Mallory. In #126: Never Look Back, Mallory, however, she breaks away from the oppressive environs of Stoneybrook to attend boarding school. Although she is terrorized and vilified by a duplicitous roommate, her problems are solved fairly quickly with the help of sympathetic classmates and reasonable adults. In her final scene, Mallory sits on her bed, beginning to question her long-held assumption that she is both destined for greatness and bound for hell.
Jessi Ramsey is a Faustian figure, always thirsting after glory and forbidden knowledge. Already a talented ballet dancer, she makes deals with various gods, demons, and other supernatural creatures to learn how to decipher runes, talk to animals, turn base metals into gold, commune with spirits, revenge herself upon her enemies, and fly. Her powers come in handy at her dance school in New York City, which is extremely cursed and haunted. Despite her towering ambitions, she is fairly easygoing, even managing to make friends with her sinister doppelgänger Jenni in #68: Jessi and the Shadow-Self. Towards the end of the series, she is faced with the choice of becoming a professional ballet dancer or obtaining the ability to turn herself into a beautiful Arabian horse at will (she is also a horse girl). She makes the mature decision to turn down both opportunities for the time being, instead opting to be a kid and experiment with necromancy, time-travel, fun doppelgänger pranks, and discussing equine literature with her best friend Mallory. In the short-lived Ominous Friends Forever series, though, she becomes a ballerina and (it is heavily implied) a were-horse, in part due to Mallory’s defection.
Abby Stevenson was introduced as an eleventh-hour interloper who switches between unhinged, corny-joke-filled attempts to turn Kristy’s life into chaos (much like the Joker in The Dark Knight) and unhinged, corny-joke-filled attempts to charm Kristy into being her girlfriend so they can be a terrifying power couple. Unlike with Dawn, her dual nature was a deliberate narrative choice; many later Ominous BSC books contain subplots that are just other club members wondering aloud what Abby’s deal is. Abby’s own books don’t shed much light on her motivations; she seems more preoccupied with ordinary adolescent concerns, like her upcoming bat mitzvah and her fraught relationship with her cryptic twin Anna (who only speaks in palindrome). Her last book, #127: The Twilight of Abby Stevenson, is a surprisingly sweet coming-of-age romance in which she and Kristy drop their hostilities and go to the movies on Valentine’s Day. Their relationship ultimately falls apart, though, thanks to Kristy’s unquenchable thirst for revenge on her enemies. Abby breaks up with her and gets really into David Lynch.
Logan Bruno is a low-level wizard who comes from the swamp and hates his father. As an alternate officer for the club, he sometimes babysits.
Shannon Kilbourne, the other alternate officer, is something of a blank, but she’s heavily implied to be a lost Dollanganger of some sort.

Had a dream that there were 2 more episodes of Clone Wars but they could've just been put together to make one long one. It was almost an AU because the final season we know didn't happen.
Palpatine lured Anakin to this ship and Ahsoka came with him. Anakin was bound to one end of the ship while Ahsoka the other (Palps knocked him out) and Ahsoka figures out its the Chancellor but she's not too surprised after everything that's happened. He makes her a deal to race to see who can get to Anakin first (Dual of the Fates) but his overall plan was to get her to commit seppukku and have Anakin see and turn him to the dark side that way.
George's original plan was to have Ahsoka killed off before he saw how great she was and ended up keeping her but could you imagine if it was done this way? Obviously it would kind of recon ROTS, hence part of why I said AU. But there's more...
She gets to Anakin first but Palps uses him as a vessel and makes him use the force to throw Ahsoka out into the ocean. Palps laughs as she drowns. Next episode, I remember I had to binge it in my dream because of what a cliffhanger it was. They even shoehorned another baby alien, this time one of the Talz.

She tries swimming back up but something grabs her leg and it's pulling her down, and it hurts, she's too weak to fight it or even see what it is, she believes this is the end. It tugs her into a sort of bubble, somehow the water becomes breathable. She wakes up to a girl's standing above her, in fact, it's a whole warehouse filled with people, slaves. All around and deeper down are things that the Empire will use later on (At-Ats, probe droids, etc)
This was the plan, this is where he hid it and had these slaves work on in secret. (Kinda doesn't make sense outside of a dream format though because of the water breathing Jedi like Kit Fisto) anyways, there's no way up. She takes a prototype probe droid, recognizing that it must transmit somewhere and she cries. She calls for help, pacing through the warehouse, her voice becomes muffled after sending so many transmissions, she's desperate, this is all she has left. She starts crying in her Togruta language, thinking of Plo Koon. Someone must understand it. That's when she realizes something
Palpatine calls back on the transmission, wondering of Ahsoka's demise as he heard the agony in her transmissions but she's more confident than ever to him now, she pulls the "I am no jedi" line.
A submarine comes up and they transfer all the slaves onto it. (I think it was literally in the wreckage)
She made it out. Palpatine hasn't been punished yet (because he's the Phantom Menace and it's her word against his) but she made it out when almost all hope was lost. Its a few days later, she finds Anakin and he says that she was asked to talk to some of the child slaves and reassure them that everything's alright. Anakin doesn't really remember what happened but he feels her frustration and says that she doesn't have to if she doesn't feel up to it but she goes anyway, she feels it's her duty, that it's a good thing. The other jedi (Yoda, Mace, etc.) Try to convince her to return to the council but she does her little speech she had in the real series about not wanting to return.
Her and Anakin head into the room full of kids, they all have plates with little dividers that have these triangle space Cheerios and some sort of fruit.

She sits down, Anakin next to her (on the floor, criss cross applesauce style) and she starts crying again. This time of relief. She made this happen, these kids were saved, Palpatine (probably won't be but hopefully) be locked up, Anakin is safe and still on the light side. All is well. Then I started crying, it was a whole mess but the best episode of Clone Wars that my dream self ever saw.

Clone Trooper Rambles
Even quiet days have their shenanigans when you live with a bunch of clone troopers in your head. Other parts can be found here.
Poor Trapper
It was one of my precious days off and I had been doing schoolwork for almost twelve straight hours. Fortunately, Rex knew I was going to be stressed and my guards for the day were Tech, Kix, and Trapper. All of them were low-key, self-sufficient troopers content to occupy themselves while I focused on everything I needed to get done.
Throughout the day, Tech had been immersed in his datapad, and I could see him altering blueprints for something whenever I happened to glance over. Kix alternated between walking around and reading what he had explained was a treatise on how malnutrition presents symptoms in different species. Trapper mostly worked on his blasters. He was trying to move to a set of dual blasters like Rex used and was having trouble getting the aim right with his non-dominant right hand. My only requests were that he shoot on the back patio and avoid hitting any of the plants I had out there.
Tech had backed me up with a vaguely interested glance. “For every plant you shoot by mistake, Crosshair will probably try to shoot you. He rarely misses.”
Trapper had done his best to look unconcerned, but I noticed that he stood by the plants and shot in the opposite direction.
When the sun had gone down and everyone was back inside, I noticed that Kix was getting more restless, pacing more often than he was reading
The next time I took a break from the essay I was chipping away at, I asked, “What’s up, Kix? You look like you’re about to crawl out of your skin.”
“I’m fine,” he said, circling the living room even faster. All of a sudden, he stopped short to give me his suspicious medic glare. “How are you? You have to have a headache from staring at the screen for that long.”
I shrugged. “Actually, I feel pretty okay. I alternate between assignments that make me look at the screen and ones where I’m reading the textbook or writing in my notebook.”
“Have you been getting enough sleep?” Kix asked.
“I got a full eight hours last night.”
“Still,” he pressed, “it isn’t healthy for a human to sit still for so long.”
“She walked to get the mail earlier, vod,” Trapper pointed out, switching his attention between Kix and I. “Plus, didn’t you stretch?”
“I did stretch,” I agreed. “My back felt a little tight, so I spent some time stretching. You were there, Kix.”
“Oh, yeah,” Kix said, deflating slightly. “But have you been drinking enough water?”
“She has consumed roughly sixty ounces of water today,” Tech informed us all, rotating a design component on his datapad.
I beamed triumphantly at Kix. “So again, what’s up? You’re still being jumpy.”
“I just… I feel like I should be doing something,” he admitted. “There’s always a trooper who is ignoring his medical needs.”
“That sounds about right,” I said with a chuckle.
Kix gave a very pointed look in my direction. “And you’re worse than most of them.”
“There’s no way,” I told him flatly. “I’ve seen Hardcase forget he was bleeding. Do you remember the time Wrecker was teaching him to take a punch?”
All three of the troopers shuddered at that reminder. “Not anyone’s smartest idea,” Tech agreed.
“Are you just looking for someone to lecture?” I asked Kix, deciding to cut to the center of the issue.
“Maybe?” Kix said, sounding just as confused as the rest of us. “I don’t know if that would help, but it probably wouldn’t make me feel worse.”
It was a strange thing: sometimes, you develop a silent form of communication with someone, even if that someone was imaginary and also didn’t have guard duty that often. Case in point, I quirked a brow at Trapper, who just shrugged. I grimaced in apology and turned back to Kix and played a hand I had been sitting on for quite a while.
“Trapper doesn’t drink water.”
“Trapper what,” Kix asked, voice so flat that it didn’t even sound like a question.
“That’s not exactly true,” Trapper hedged. “I just prefer flavored water.”
“There are some health benefits to that,” Kix conceded. “Fruit, herbs, even-”
“Ask him what he flavors his water with,” I suggested.
Kix didn’t even speak, just turned to Trapper with a single eyebrow raised.
“Well, I… it was, uh- It was flavored with the ground beans of a plant that has certain energy-”
“Caf isn’t water, Trapper!” Kix said indignantly.
“It’s partially water!” Trapper tried in his own defense.
“So are you, but not as much as you should be!” Kix returned. A moment later, he had gathered his thoughts enough to launch a world-class lecture on dehydration and how it impacts all systems of the body.
I shot Trapper my best half-grateful, half-sympathetic glance and put my headphones back on. I had an essay to write.
---
A/N - just a couple of quick reminders: feel free to reblog these! They’re silly and a little pointless, but every reblog helps me get some exposure. Also, my requests are open if anyone has an idea of something they’d like to read but not have to write themselves. Thank you for reading!

𝐒𝐞𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐞? 𝐒𝐞𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞!
LET’S PLAY!
Get to know more about this invertebrate by reading this blog! It contains the classification, biology, relationship to humans, and interesting facts about this marvelous organism, specifically one of its subgroup — Aplysia.
CLASSIFICATION
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Bilateria
Infrakingdom: Protostomia
Superphylum: Lophozoa
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Gastropoda
Subclass: Opisthobranchia
Order: Anaspidea
Family: Aplysiidae
Genus: Aplysia
Species: Aplysia californica
(ITIS, n.d.)
Aplysia, commonly known as spotted sea hares, belongs to the group of gastropod molluscs. There are 37 known species in this genus. The word Aplysia came from the word L’Aplysia which means “that which one cannot wash”. They are one of the oldest mentioned animals from historical texts with the first authentic description provided by Pliny in his Historia Naturalis (published on 60 A.D) (Moroz, 2011) .
BIOLOGY
Ocean Globetrotters
These invertebrates are benthic dwellers that occupies the middle and lower intertidal zones, grazing on sea beds or corals. They are distributed in subtropical and tropical tide zones with one species (A. punctata) even reaching the Arctic Circle. Seven species of Aplysia can navigate long distances for example A. brasiliana which can travel up to 1 km in one swim episode (Moroz, 2011).
youtube
Spotted sea hares move in two ways, either by swimming or crawling on the sea bed. They swim by doing synchronized waves of muscular contraction pass from anterior to posterior to make a funnel that pulls in water, squeezing the anterior parts of the parapodia together forces the water out behind the creature and pushes it forward. While, they can crawl by raising the leading edge of the foot and extending it forward in an arching pattern so the rest of its body follows the arching pattern until it reaches the tail (Dice, 2014).
The Naked Alien
The body of spotted sea hares consists of a head, foot, and visceral mass. It is partially distorted, not coiled, and superficially bilaterally symmetrical (Fox, 2006).
The head has an anterior pair oral tentacles. The median union of the two tentacles forms a transverse oral veil over the mouth. A pair of rhinophores project dorsally from the surface of the neck. The oral tentacles and rhinophores serve as sensory organ. Specifically, their eyes are located at the base of each rhinophore (Fox, 2006).
(Brooks & Hiller, 2001)
The foot lies along the midline of the ventral surface. Its posterior part serves as a sucker that is used to attach the posterior end of the animal while anterior end is elevated above the substratum. The foot extends posterior to the body as a short tail. Dorsolaterally, it is divided into two wing-like parapodia that is used for locomotion (Fox, 2006).
(Brooks & Hiller, 2001)
Their mantle and mantle cavity are found in the middle. The mantle is the dorsal body wall of the visceral mass. Inside it, the shell can be found. Below the shell is the reduced and small mantle cavity that opens broadly to the right containing the gill, anus, and gonopore. At the posterior right corner of the shell is a folded mantle resulting to a short, tubular, exhalant siphon that encloses the anus (Fox, 2006).
A Salad Lifestyle
youtube
Spotted sea hares feed on algae. A. californica (California sea hares) feeds on several kinds of red algae such as Laurencia pacifica, Plocamium pacificum and Ceramium spp. as well as sea lettuce and eelgrass. These organisms utilize their toothed radula to grasp the algae and store it briefly in the esophagus. Then, the food moves into the stomach fixed with pyramidal teeth to further crush the substances The food is blended in with different stomach-related digestive fluids to further breakdown the matter while the wastes are discharged out through the anus (Dice, 2014).
Dating on Another Level
Sea hares gather to mate. With the absence of dating apps, they find each other through tactile and chemical cues. They have photoreceptors that recognize fluctuations in the intensity of white light. Sadly, they find it hard to detect red wavelengths. To compensate, they respond more to chemical changes in seawater using the osphradium which detects dissolved chemicals in the water (Dice, 2014).
Loyalty, whomstve?
From a spiral cleavage to blastula, gastrula, trochophore and finally, the first larval stages — the development of their embryo happens inside the egg capsules. Newly hatch veligers swim upwards using their cilia and may take months drifting in the ocean while feeding on microscopic algae and bacteria until they detect cues that prompts them to settle to the alga which they will feed on. After this, they undergo rapid metamorphosis wherein they lose larval characteristics. They become juveniles that resemble miniature adults in all major features except reproductive organs (Moroz, 2011). California sea hares reach sexual maturity after about 120 days (Dice, 2014).
youtube
Sea hares are hermaphrodites, but they never self-fertilize by nature. Their copulation generally involves dozens. Every creature might be either getting or conveying sperm (or both) in respect of their present sex and position inside the chain (Dice, 2014).
Short Fruitful Years
Their life expectancy is normally short, most commonly survive for just a year. Many of them loose their life after reproduction. Amazingly, cool temperatures help delay reproduction; hence, cooler waters can fairly protract their life expectancy (Emore, 2002).
Hey, Leave Me Alone!
youtube
Distressed spotted sea hares secrete a purple ink which contains chemicals that disrupts the sensory function of opportunistic predators (Moroz, 2011). This chemical defense coupled with the distasteful algal toxins accumulated from their diet significantly creates a habitat where they can roam freely and has few natural predators (Emore, 2002).
RELATIONSHIP TO HUMANS
youtube
Sea hares are known to be highly valuable laboratory animals especially in the field of neurobiology, more specifically in studying memory and learning behaviors. The California Sea Hare (Aplysia californica) is an important neurobiological model and is used extensively in studies of behavior and psychology. They have the largest neurons in the animal kingdom making it feasible to identify the specific nerve cells responsible for certain mechanisms.
As for their ecosystem role, this herbivorous organism serves as keystone species in the intertidal ecosystem by affecting the density and abundance of its algal prey.
5 Interesting FYIs about SEA HARES
1. DUAL PURPOSE WINGS
Sea hares have two large wing-like flaps that fold back on the body to protect their gills and internal shell plate. This wing-like extension is also used by some species of sea hares for short bursts of awkward swimming when threatened.
2. IT’S THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
As they say the more, the merrier. A circle of sea hares dubbed as a “Roman Circle” is formed during mating and copulation where each animal inseminates the one in front- a group sex indeed. As hermaphroditic organisms, sea hares serve as males at their front and females at their back.
3. GO AND MULTIPLY TO THE POWER OF 10
(Eleas, 2020)
Who cares about a twin, a quadruplet or a quintuplet? A single of this creature can lay up to 500 million eggs during one breeding season- that is more than a country’s population. Sea hares’ eggs are colored pink and often appear threaded.
4. WHAT YOU SEE, IS WHAT WE EAT
(Gfycat, 2019)
The color of sea hares are affected by the color of algae they consume. For example, young sea hares that tend to eat red algae are red in color, mature sea hares are colored green and brown because they consume algae that is also green and brown in color.
5. SEA HARES ARE CERTIFIED BTS STANS 💜 💜 💜

Sea hares have the right to use the infamous purple hearts on social media, and that’s a fact! This sea organism produces purple ink as a defense mechanism. Native Americans used this purple ink to dye clothing. Sea hares can also produce white or red ink depending on the color of the pigments in the seaweed they have consumed.

[Review] Hey Pikmin (3DS)

At first glance, I feared this would be disappointing like Arzest’s other Nintendo spin-off project, Yoshi’s New Island. But it turned out much better than that!
I’ve enjoyed the Pikmin games, cute-ified strategy games with amusing writing. Pikmin 2 is my favourite, partially for the latter reason: there’s a large number of “treasures” to be found in the game, which are logged and commented on by our diminutive spaceman/salaryman Olimar. The third instalment, for all its whiz-bang advancements, cut out this factor in favour of the bland fruit system. So I was glad that this sidescrolling spin-off brought back the treasure database with a vengeance.
But I suppose it’s more “important” to talk about the gameplay. The change in perspective to a 2D “platformer” style greatly simplifies the strategy aspect. You don’t leave Pikmin to tasks, you just roll with a posse of 20 at most. Instead of large spaces to explore, levels are more focused, more action-y, with Pikmin delivered to you at prearranged spots. This (or otherwise progression) is sometimes accompanied by a jolly little animation showing the antics of these adorable creatures that can thankfully be skipped on replays.
You are still managing their lives, so they can help you pass obstacles or carry things, etc. But Olimar now has a jetpack to get some height and cover horizontal space. If only it wasn’t so slow-moving, or its landing animation so insufferably long. It’s one of the relievingly few instances where the clumsiness I expected from Yoshi’s New Island reared its ugly head. I’d compare this game more to Yoshi’s Island DS from Arzest’s predecessor studio Artoon; not just in being a more polished, enjoyable experience, but the dual-screen setup extending the visible play area resembles it as well.
Unlike all these Yoshi examples though, Hey Pikmin is doing something new while being a successor, by shifting the gameplay so strongly. This means it’s not really a “true” Pikmin game I suppose, and has a different set of aims and challenges. But they’ve done a decent job translating the series’ staples and feeling faithful while doing so.
I liked the little puzzle challenge rooms between levels. I liked using my cloned NFC chip to use the “Pikmin group” amiibo, to cheese replays and get random other amiibo statues in-game for Olimar to comment on. I liked the fuzzy, colourful backgrounds. The “Pikmin Park” feature (where you assign your retrieved Pikmin long-term tasks) was a bit half-baked. Overall I had a nice little time here, it was nice to revisit this tiny world where ordinary human objects are wondrous and strange treasures.

“Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls and Gems of all cuts and creeds, it’s showtime!”
“Please put your hands together for the musical stylings of ‘Tanzanite And The Runners!’”
Gem: Tanzanite Pronouns: He/Him Weapon: Long double edged sword Occupation: Radio DJ/Session Musician/Leader of the band ‘Tanzanite And The Runners’ Band Position: Leader, Lead Vocalist, Songwriter, Various instruments (Acoustic Guitar, Saxophone, Pianist mostly) Personality: Calm, Cool, Charming and Charismatic, Sees the good in most folks
Skillset: Sword Proficiency, Photokinesis, Musicality Unique Abilities: Instant shapeshifting, Interdimensional Storage, Superior Adaptation
Icon Faceclaim: Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear)
Originally an agent of Blue Diamond, Tanzanite acted as a spy, worming his way into rebel camps only to turn on any Gem siding with Rose Quartz by slicing into them with his trusted blade, and shattering Gems to ensure her followers shrunk in size.
He was doing his Diamond well, and Rose’s army could have completely fallen, had he not felt the weight of his actions.
On the way to his next target, Tanzanite was struck with grief. He had been doing his job well, but at what cost? What was even the point of the Diamond’s galaxy-wide strangle hold on planets?
After literally falling into a hole on one rainy night, he vowed that he’d never fight for the Diamond Authority again, instead offering his hand to very the cause that he had been eliminating.
However, he vowed to never raise his sword, even for the Crystal Gems. Instead, he’d lend his support via a new vice in his life: Music, essentially becoming a bard.
Not to long after his change of metaphoric heart, he’d meet with more Crystal Gems that would welcome him into their corps. Gems that he would stay with for the rest of his life like a family.
---
Gem: Chrysoprase Pronouns: She/Her Weapon: Bow and Arrow Occupation: Archery Instructor, Band Member Band Position: Horn Instruments, Pianist, Strings Personality: Level headed, determined, a little smarmy
Skillset: Bow Proficiency, Photokinesis, Energy Projection, Musicality, Gem-tech Interfacing Unique Abilities: Psychokinesis, Terrain Manipulation
Icon Faceclaim: Elisabeth Blanctorche (KOF)
Gem: (Green) Pearl Pronouns: She/Her Weapon: Giant Fan Occupation: Librarian, Band Member Band Position: Various, uses Self-Duplication clones to fill in gaps for various instruments, manager Personality: Astute, Poised, Hardworking, Patient, has a tendency to be sarcastic at times
Skillset: Same abilities as an average Pearl, Musicality Unique Abilities: Most of an average Pearl (Holographic Projection, Self-Duplication, etc.), Wind Manipulation
Icon Faceclaim: Pearl (S*U)
Gem: Bismuth Pronouns: He/Him Weapon: N/A, read below Occupation: Radio DJ/Session Musician, Band Member Band Position: Pianist, Drums Personality: Smart, precise, well read, stern but fair
Skillset: Same abilities as an average Bismuth (Shapeshifting Weapons, Thermal Resistance, etc.), Musicality Unique Abilities: Same abilities as an average Bismuth (Skilled Craftsmanship, Superhuman Strength)
Icon Faceclaim: Bismuth (S*U)
A rouge space captain, her Pearl and a blacksmith. I’m sure there’s a joke here, but I’ve got nothing!
Anyhow, this ragtag group cut split from the Empire after being forced to patrol planets that the Empire had already swept through.
Feeling her talents were being put to waste, Chrysoprase decided that she’d align with the rebels, just to get back at the Empire for more or less making her and her entire fleet of warriors janitors.
Although she faced some push back from her Pearl and fleet Bismuth, they eventually saw things from her point of view. Plus her turning to the Crystal Gems proved to be fruitful as the number of Gems under Rose Quartz rose tremendously, no thanks to that Spy assassin.
Ironically enough on a trip to Earth, Tanzanite just so happened to run into the green rogue and crew. The crew heard of Tanzanite’s plight and welcomed him to the Crystal Gems with open arms.
Even as the years went by and Gems came and went, these four would always stick together through thick and thin.
However, three more Gems would prove to stick around in the coming years.
---
Gem: Fire Agate Pronouns: He/Him Weapon: Dual Tonfa Occupation: Construction, Band Member Band Position: Backing Vocals, Electric Guitar/Bass Personality: LOUD, BRASH, CRUDE, ANGRY, A REAL ASSHOLE AND PROUD OF IT!!
Skillset: Tonfa Proficiency, Musicality, Pinpoint Accuracy, Hand To Hand Combat Proficiency Unique Abilities: Superhuman Strength, Pyrokinesis, Thermal/Heat Resistance, Sound Manipulation
Icon Faceclaim: Yashiro Nanakase (KOF)
A captain sent to exile after over stepping his authority, Fire was left to blaze alone on a planet full of monsters far on the other edge of the galaxy.
For years his resentment towards the Diamond Authority grew as did his monster kill-count. There was nothing he wanted to do more than to shatter the Gem of each Diamond so he could burn their shards into ashes in the palm of his fiery hands.
He was found by Tanzanite and crew by pure chance, noticing a huge pillar of flame erupting from a planetoid far off in the galaxy. Upon arriving to the planet’s surface, Fire heard of their affiliation towards the Crystal Gems and wanted in immediately.
“I’ll join any cause you want, just as long as I get to smash those dumb rocks~!!!”
While most of the team were weary to his extreme levels of violence, Tanzanite found him to be a valuable member to the team, appreciating his literal fiery spirit.
---
Gem: Lapis Lazuli Pronouns: He/Him Weapon: Water Pot (Generates water for him to control) Occupation: Various odd jobs, Band Member Band Position: Backing Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, banjo Personality: Quite, easy-going, relaxed, go with the flow kind of Gem
Skillset: Same as an average Lapis Lazuli (Enhanced Durability, Strength) Unique Abilities: Same as an average Lapis Lazuli (Hydrokinesis, Water Generation, etc.)
Icon Faceclaim: Syo Kirishima/Kyo Kusanagi (KOF)
Counting acting Fire’s blazing personality is the lazy river rider mentality of Lapis Lazuli.
An easy-going Gem swept up in the tides of war, Lapis was to be exiled to the same planet as Fire Agate, but managed to hi-jack an escape pod with his water skills.
Landing in the mountains of South Korea, he lived a quiet life of living off the land in a little lean-to he built all himself. It wasn’t an exciting life, but it was a good life for him.
Of course he eventually grew bored of it and wanted some more action in his life. Luckily Tanzanite and his crew found him and, well, you can guess what happened next.
---
Gem: (Black) Spinel Pronouns: She/Her Weapon: N/A Occupation: No real job, but they tend to work with Fire Agate every now and then Band Position: Tambourine, Bongos, Piano Personality: Happy-Go-Lucky, always ready to play, but can get shy around new people
Skillset: Same as an average Spinel Unique Abilities: Same as an average Spinel
Icon Faceclaim: Spinel (S*U)
And rounding out this whacky family of space rocks is this little black and white ragamuffin!
A mental casualty thanks to the war, Spinel was the last of his rebel group, left alone and afraid to leave a cave they hid in while their rebel camp was attacked by the Diamond Authority.
Can you guess what happened next? You guessed it! Tanzanite and crew found Spinel and welcomed them into their group.
They were hesitant at first, but with Tender Loving Care, the team were able to put the spring back into Spinel’s squeaky steps! Although they’re still shy around new folks, but then again who isn’t?
---
For years the team would be on the run, moving from place to place, lending their hands whenever possible.
And then the day came: The Diamond Authority ceased their galaxy wide conquest. The time for peace was at hand.
Three years later, Tanzanite and crew have settled down in Empire City, getting by however they can, from working odd jobs to performing in their band ‘Tanzanite And The Runners’.
It’s not always easy, but together, they’ll make it through.
“And that’s our story~ I know, you didn’t come here to hear us wax lyrical about our lives...Nah, you came for the music~”
“So enough dawdling, let’s get this show on the road! 1, 2, 3!”

We Asked 14 Beer Pros: What Will Be the Next Big Hop?

Hops get a lot of attention in craft brewing. The lupulin-dusted flowers not only give beer its balance and bitterness, but add aromas and flavors ranging from pine trees to pineapples.
Thanks to hop breeding programs, research grants, brewers’ experimentation, and craft beer drinkers’ willing reception-bordering-obsession with new hop varietals, new strains and hybrids are always in progress. To gauge what the next hot hop will be, we asked beer professionals around the U.S. what’s on the horizon — to Galaxy, and beyond.
“Strata. We may be partial, because we plan on making a ton of Dare to Know, our DIPA with lotsa Strata.” — Anna Selver-Kassell, VP Hospitality, Threes Brewing, Brooklyn, NY
“I think two hops that will start to gain notice in the near future are Triumph (think Juicy Fruit) and Barbe Rouge (bright red berry notes). We’ve been playing with them and have been pumped by the results. Also, I hope that an old trend will return: using lots of different hops to create brand new dynamics, rather than focusing on just a couple of the most popular.” — Jordan Fink, Head Brewer and Co-owner, Woods Boss Brewing, Denver, CO
“Hop breeding programs are doing such a good job now of creating incredible flavor and aroma profiles that I don’t think the question is ‘which one?’ but ‘how many?’ I predict we will have four or five hops that will compete and all be impossible to get. Having said all that, I’d love to see a resurgence of Cluster, one of the oldest American varieties.” — Aaron Reilly, Head Brewer of the Basecamp Brewpub, Devils Backbone Brewing, Roseland, VA
“There are so many being developed, it is hard to say. If anyone clones a Galaxy type — whoo hoo!” — Dennis O’Harrow, Head Brewer, Lone Tree Brewing Co., Lone Tree, CO
“Any new hop that could be dual purpose … that can be used for bittering and aroma.” — Marks Lanham, Head Brewer, Comrade Brewing, Denver, CO
“Strata is a newer hop out in the market that is gaining popularity. It’s loaded with citrus and berry notes and I can see a lot of brewers wanting to brew with it, including me.” — Chris Juergen, Head Brewer, Karbach Brewing, Houston, TX
“I had to consult our head brewer, Josh Evans, for this one. He’s pretty interested in playing with the recently named Sultana, which he used in its experimental form, because of its potential to combine with a couple of other hops to really push flavor one way or another (pine to pineapple to citrus). The way it plays with other hops will be fun to explore in the coming months. Whether or not other brewers across the U.S. jump on this hop bandwagon or some other, there’ll be plenty of great aromas and flavors coming to craft consumers next year!” — Carol Cochran, Co-owner and Co-founder, Horse & Dragon Brewing Company, Fort Collins, CO
“Southern Passion.” — Paul Friedheim, Lead Brewer, Thirsty Monk, Asheville, NC
“I’ve no idea, but I do wish there was more quality Galaxy being grown. I love that hop, but breweries our size just can’t get a hold of any. Endo is going to be making a single hop batch out of Sultana in a few weeks — I can’t wait to see how that turns out.” — Kevin Van Winkle, Co-owner and Head Brewer, Endo Brewing Company, Lafayette, CO
“We are entering the age of ‘S.’ Strata and Sabro are two hops which have a ton of potential and will start showing up in many larger-scale releases.” — Chris Rockwood, Head Brewer, Magic Hat Brewing Company, Burlington, VT
“I would like to see something developed at a publicly funded breeding program like those at Washington State [University] or Oregon State [University] become successful.” — Carl Heinz, Brewmaster, Breckenridge Brewery, Breckenridge, CO
“The varietals that are being produced regionally will explode once the farms catch up with demand. Colorado farms … currently can’t supply more than a batch at a time. … Some of the hops coming out of Arizona are showing up in volume and are amazing. … That said, South African hops currently seem to be what I keep hearing about.” — Chris Labbe, Owner, Periodic Brewing, Northglenn, CO
“All of my money is on the revival of Hall-Mitts and Loral; I guess that means more breweries will have to brew lager beer!” — Colin Ferguson, Sales Manager, Live Oak Brewing Co., Austin, TX
“Medusa, also known as Neo Mexicanus, is definitely one to watch. It’s not readily available quite yet, but a handful of breweries have experimented with Medusa and had great success, and eight different varieties of this hop are currently being developed. It’s native to Colorado and New Mexico. It’s particularly unique because it grows a multi-headed hop cone! We’ll be actively awaiting Medusa’s arrival on the hop market.” — Fred Searles, Head Brewer, Bonfire Brewing, Eagle, CO

r more than 20 years of development, genetically modified crop products have also changed from early insect-resistant, herbicide-resistant and other initial products to second-generation products that can improve yield and nutrition quality. Although batch after batch of high quality and high yield products have been developed successfully, the complex economic and social impact and the technical level of risk resistance of gm crops in different countries lead to the difference of views on the industrialization of gm agricultural biotechnology in different countries.
Since the advent of gm technology in the late 1970s, gm technology has shown great potential in crop variety improvement and species diversity. In March 1986, China launched the "high-tech research and development plan", in which gm biotechnology was listed as a national development priority. After that, gm biotechnology entered the position of national overall strategic planning. In more than 30 years of China's vigorous development of gm technology, gm technology has achieved fruitful results, a variety of excellent gm crops from the laboratory to the countryside, and from the countryside to the market. The safety of gm food has become a focus of public opinion, which has affected China's gm policy. From the first time to strengthen the management of genetically modified food in the central document no. 1 in 2007 to the careful promotion of genetically modified products in 2016, eight mentions of genetically modified products showed that the central government attached great importance to the issue of genetically modified crops. By 2017, the industrialization promotion of genetically modified crops had been officially included in the national "13th five-year" scientific and technological innovation plan.
As a traditional agricultural country with a large population, how to ensure national food security and long-term effective supply of agricultural products has always been the primary task of our government. Therefore, in the marketization of gm crops, the government's management of gm crops and the supervision of corresponding agricultural policies are very important.
Since its inception in the late 1980s, China's transgenic technology has gone through four development stages:
The first stage was from 1986 to 2000. In the late 1980s, the cotton bollworm disaster broke out year after year in China's main cotton producing areas, resulting in a long period of "cotton shortage" in the whole country, which posed a great threat to the survival of China's cotton farmers and the cotton industry. Moreover, excessive use of pesticides also caused a significant reduction in cotton quality and large-scale ecological environment pollution. After the "cotton shortage" incident, China began to explore and actively introduce the world's advanced technology. Genetically modified cotton was introduced for the first time and began to be used for production. The laboratory began to develop edible genetically modified crops. The central government formulated the "863 plan" to deepen the study of staple food crops.
The second phase was from 2001 to 2009. China's transgenic research has begun to change from the stage of local independent innovation to the stage of comprehensive independent innovation. In 2009, huazhong agricultural university developed an inbred line of hybrid genetically resistant rice and transgenic maize, which successfully bred higher yield. New products that are more resistant to pests. In the first decade of the 21st century, China started a major project of breeding new varieties of genetically modified organisms, and gradually established a policy of "accelerating research, promoting application, regulating management and scientific development" for the development of genetically modified crops.
The third stage is from 2010 to 2013. After the ministry of agriculture released the safety certificate of gm research results from various institutes, the issue of the safety of gm food as the main food has triggered a heated debate. Supporters pay more attention to the development of China's transgenic science and technology, and believe that if China stops or slows down the research on genetically modified food, the transgenic science will fall behind the world in the future. However, the opponents are more concerned about their own interests. For them, the development of genetically modified food science is meaningless, and the absolute safety of genetically modified food cannot be verified, so safety problems have certain risks. Under such circumstances, China's research policy on genetically modified staple food gradually became conservative. Since 2009, the approval of new varieties of genetically modified crops and the production and operation license did not continue to be promoted. The government adopted the safety management mode of "continue to study and promote cautiously" to continue to study and observe genetically modified products.
The fourth stage is from 2014 to now. General secretary xi jinping attended the rural work conference of the CPC Central Committee in 2013 and proposed the development policy of "ensuring safety, independent innovation, bold research and prudent promotion" for genetically modified crops, and the national gm development strategy was gradually clarified. China's genetic modification policy mainly has three aspects: first, it focuses on independent innovation. We will continue to carry out major national projects to cultivate genetically modified organisms, and improve China's overall agricultural production capacity and agricultural ecological security. Strive to achieve world-class research, industrialization and marketization of agricultural gmos in China by 2020. Second, we will promote the product with prudence. The country is determined to promote the application of gm crops, but at the same time, we need to repeatedly study and explore, take small steps, and improve promotion policies through market feedback. Third, security is emphasized. The government must strictly manage and supervise it in accordance with the law.
The basic national conditions of China's agriculture have always been that there are more people and less land, especially the shortage of arable land resources. Under the dual pressure of increasing population and decreasing agricultural resources, the development of transgenic technology is extremely urgent. At present, China has preliminarily established the technological innovation and industrial development system of transgenic breeding, including functional gene cloning, genetic transformation, variety selection, safety evaluation, product development and application promotion. The application of transgenic technology is at the forefront of the world. With the strong support and development of the state, scientific research institutes have made great breakthroughs in the cultivation of new varieties and core technologies, mainly in the following three aspects:
In terms of crops, China has cultivated new high-quality and high-yield insect-resistant cotton, rice, corn, herbicide-resistant soybean, etc., which has the prospect of industrialization. In terms of animal husbandry, 43 new transgenic plant materials and recombinant human lactoferrin transgenic cows, high-lean pigs and other new transgenic animal strains have passed the general safety assessment of the ministry of agriculture and entered the production and inspection stage, laying a solid foundation for the industrialization of genetic modification.
New techniques for safe gm, such as the absence of selective markers, deletion of exogenous genes and integration at specific sites, have begun to develop rapidly. There were 339 genes with high yield, high quality and strong disaster resistance, and 37 genes with independent intellectual property rights and important value. New systems for large-scale genetic modification of major plants and animals such as rice, cotton, corn, soybeans and pigs and cattle have been established.
The platform for China's gm ecological environment and food safety evaluation, testing and supervision technology has been established, and more than 70 gm safety technology standards have been promulgated, greatly improving China's biosafety support capacity.
Since the introduction and development of gmo technology, China has attached great importance to the safety of gmo. It is the only country in the world that adopts qualitative and catalog-specific mandatory labeling. Gmo food must be clearly marked on its packaging in the process of production and management. In particular, the development of genetically modified staple food, from research and development to production, adopts strict control and long-term key monitoring of genetically modified agricultural products. In the no. 1 document of the CPC Central Committee with the theme of "issues concerning agriculture, rural areas and farmers", the content of genetic modification appeared for the first time in 2007 and proposed to strengthen the labeling management of genetically modified food. In the following 11 years, the central government attached great importance to the development of gmos and mentioned the management of new gmos eight times. Although the no. 1 document released by the State Council in 2018 did not contain any content about gm, the State Council mentioned gm technology again in the subsequent 13th five-year plan, with the tone of vigorous research, prudent promotion and safety assurance. By comparing the no.1 document of the CPC Central Committee over the past years, we can draw a conclusion that since the implementation of the special project of new varieties of genetically modified organisms, China's policy on the development of genetically modified technology has been "bold research and independent innovation", while the regulatory authorities have also "strictly managed and carefully promoted". In May 2016, the ministry of agriculture reviewed and approved 10 standards including the general requirements laboratory for the safety management of agricultural gmos. Ensure strict monitoring of the genetic modification process from the research and development stage, cultivation and production of field trials, and prevent the spread of gmos to the environment and markets without safety assessments.
As a core of biological science and technology with rich knowledge and economic value, transgenic technology plays a vital role in promoting sustainable development of agricultural ecology and ensuring national food security. This is because it can solve the problem of food shortage caused by the rapid growth of population. Meanwhile, in the process of human development, a large amount of traditional energy, such as coal and oil, will be consumed, causing serious pollution to the environment and causing human beings to fall into the crisis of survival. The bioenergy brought by vigorously developing transgenic technology can effectively solve this problem. As a traditional agricultural country with a population of 1.3 billion, the main work of the government is to ensure national food security and effective long-term supply of agricultural products. In terms of the development process of gene crops in recent years, the commercialization of gm crops in China is still very slow, and there is no commercial promotion of staple food. Although the national research and development of gm technology is in full swing, the market response is not great, most people still hold a wait-and-see attitude, and there is still market panic in some areas.
In the future, China will continue to face the dual pressure of decreasing agricultural resources and increasing population. The in-depth research and application of gm crops will be an important measure, which not only conforms to the central policy on gm application, but also conforms to the sustainable development concept of "innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing" in the 13th five-year plan. Therefore, the development of genetically modified crops is still the trend of The Times and has broad prospects. The realization of marketization of genetically modified crops will help improve national food security. It is in line with the future national strategy, and at the same time, genetically modified crops can produce considerable economic benefits rapidly due to their high yield and high quality. Observe the world gm agriculture industry to gain support from most governments and organizations for this emerging biotechnology. In the future, genetically modified food will be changed from providing basic staple food to helping human beings solve the problem of various nutrient deficiencies and even have certain medicinal value, which cannot be matched by traditional agricultural products.
As a new high-tech thing, the public has little knowledge about gm, so it is normal to arouse doubts and anxiety. Due to their strong professionalism, it is difficult for gm scientists to communicate directly with the public, and some scientists even feel "too lazy to talk nonsense with laymen", which intensifies the public's doubts and resistance to gm technology. In this case, the government proposed to increase the safety management and scientific popularization of gmo technology, put the popularization of gmo technology and r&d management in the same position, and strengthen the popularization of gmo technology will be an important task in the promotion of gmo in the future.
Therefore, the publicity department can mobilize more forces in the future gm science work, such as making some gm science popularization boards easy for the public to understand and putting them into the community to train science popularization experts. In addition to traditional media, television and newspapers, we should also organize on-site lectures and training activities on the knowledge of transgenic science by means of new media, such as WeChat microblog, to improve people's understanding of transgenic technology. In popularizing science, we must also insist on openness and transparency. Let the knowledge dissemination of transgenic science and technology research and development go hand in hand, so that the society has a certain understanding of transgenic biotechnology, and create a positive social atmosphere for the application and development of transgenic technology in the future. With the rapid development of transgenic technology, it can be improved from the following aspects:
We will improve the research and development model of major national transgenic technology projects, improve top-level design, and establish a research and development system for cooperation between the government and enterprises, with enterprises as the main body. After the establishment of the system, the government research department is mainly engaged in the basic application research of transgenic technology, expanding and innovating the research and development of genetically modified organisms for enterprises. The division of labor between the public sector and government enterprises in gm technology research and development is clear and complementary. At the same time, the management and implementation of intellectual property rights should be strengthened, and relevant preferential policies should be introduced to provide incentives for enterprises to innovate, so that enterprises can gradually become the main body of gm technology research and development and promote the development of modern agricultural gmos.
Reform the existing investment mechanism and establish a new assessment mechanism. For the research units and researchers in the national system of gm technology research and development, the operation mode and evaluation mechanism of the transnational technology organization unit are adopted. In the mode of enterprise operation, it is the evaluation and appointment of professional managers by the board of directors. In the research unit, the chief engineer can fully understand the backbone of scientific research and technical research in the organization, as well as the evaluation, appointment and dismissal of the heads of each internal research unit. In the competent department of specific scientific research tasks, the person in charge shall evaluate, appoint and dismiss the internal scientific research workers. Based on the evaluation of corporatization, the coordination between upper, middle and lower reaches, large-scale and standardized r & d mode can be effectively implemented. The implementation of this evaluation mechanism and the improvement of the work of researchers can effectively stimulate the enthusiasm of researchers at all levels. By reforming the existing research input mechanism and integrating domestic research resources, the strategic goal of national gm technology development can be achieved.
The research and development of gm technology is affected by the innovation ability of enterprises, the quality of public research system and the quality of researchers. There are still many problems to be faced. In this regard, appropriate strategy and policy research is particularly important. In transgenic technology at the beginning of the special project, the relevant leaders and relevant departments attaches great importance to the research of transgenic strategies and policies, but in 2008, especially after the start, all sorts of reasons lead to the government at a higher level of the marginalization of gm technology development, and the government's neglect lead to research project funding cuts, departments of scientific research to the follow-up research and technology for further research and investigation. The research and development stage is the key to the successful completion of the established goals of major gm projects. However, the development strategy, industrialization and related policy research of national gm biotechnology cannot be ignored.

Save Time, Grow Cannabis Hands-Off
If you have ever received a succulent or cactus as a gift, it isn’t because your friend is trying to tell you something about your character. It’s because these two houseplants are incredibly robust, needing very little attention. Plants like these do well in todays under accommodating society, where loose time can easily be supplemented by preferential online streaming and delivery services. Unfortunately, the sharing economy has yet to produce a gig for plant sitters.
Some plants, even despite their names, do not grow like weeds. Cannabis is a surprisingly fickle plant if not provided with adequate care. Difficulty levels depend on each variety’s genetics. Some common clones you might see in shops are the causal three: Blue Dream, Gorilla Glue #4, or Cinex. See our clones vs. seeds buyers guide if you’d like to learn more about marijuana genetics.
For this scenario, we’ll be starting from a clone since this is the most common route people take. There are many growing methods out there, and some require more maintenance than others. This growing method, in particular, uses microbial populated soils fueled by dry fertilizers and distilled water. Together, these variables form a self-regulating, ecologically-sound vehicle for your new clone baby.
Maintaining Proper PH In Your Soil And Water
There are many different growing methods out there, most of which involve liquid fertilizers. Chelated material from these liquid nutrients builds up in the soil around the plant and requires flushing every two-to-three weeks in conjunction with a normal watering schedule. This can drastically change the pH level in your soil, creating unnecessary maintenance. Hobbies should be about having fun while learning, not an arbitrary penial measuring contest.
Getting your hands on some rainwater would be ideal, although not completely necessary. Distilled or water conditioned with reverse osmosis is also okay so long as you blend this water with chlorine-free, non-softened spring water. A good healthy pH is considered within the range of 60 to 80 PPMs.
Synchronizing your soil and water is key. Many types of fertilizers, the ones this method will use, are primarily dry non-liquid fertilizers. Fertilizers by Down To Earth are universally available online or in your local garden supply store. Ideally, composted or ‘super soil’ is preferred. For the sake of brevity, we simply recommend using pH adjusted Happy Frog soil by Fox Farm.
Preparing Your Medium & Lighting
Clones are sold commercially in small 12 oz cups or one-gallon pots and always sold in a vegetative state. Before you do anything. Go out and buy a five-gallon pot and some dual spectrum LED grow lights. It’s important you maintain an 18-hour lighting schedule at the minimum during a vegetative cycle.
Deciding on when to flower, is entirely up to you. The longer you keep your plant in veg, the higher the yield. From this point on, lighting schedules must change from 18–24 hours to 12 hours of light during the day and 12 hours of darkness during the night. Twenty-four hours would be more ideal if you don’t mind paying a little extra in your utility bill for the next two-to-three months.
Buying a five-gallon pot will facilitate more room for your roots. Bigger root systems beget larger yields and higher THC percentages. In addition to these peripheral items, try and figure out a way for you to control temperature, humidity, and lighting. Optimum temperature/humidity levels should hover between 75 and 80 degrees with 60–65 percent humidity. After getting your environment set up, begin mixing those spikes.
*VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER*
Any anomalous fluctuations in your lighting schedule during a flowering period can ruin the yield. An overlap can cause your bud (which should be a lady) to display hermaphroditic features if this photoperiod is interrupted during the night cycle. Any sudden changes in light, temperature, or environmental schedules can cause hermaphroditic traits in your cannabis, resulting in seed landed buds.
Prepping Your Amendments
Garden spikes have been around for years and work brilliantly. They distribute nutrients efficiently around a plant’s rhizosphere. What you’re doing here is setting your cannabis up for the rest of its life. Before adding your Happy Frog soil into that five-gallon pot, you will need to mix the three following combinations of dry fertilizers.
You’ll need three 51 oz Mason jars if you want to be consistent with these ratios. Each ratio is measured out to be one cup—no more, no less. After filling these up, go ahead and shake them around thoroughly. It’s important you keep these jars organized. Designate each jar with painter’s tape or something you can easily tear off after you’re done. This first mix will be your Floor Flowering Layer. The last two are going to be your flowering and high nitrogen spikes.
Mixing and Applying Your Floor Flowering Layer
Sprinkle two teaspoons of your Floor Flowering Layer at the bottom of your five-gallon pot. At this stage. It would also help if you did an equal amount of PURE Granular Bloom. Cannabis knows where the food is at. Think of this as an incentive to coax those roots to the bottom.

Transplanting
Transplanting is a very delicate procedure. Assess how much soil you will need to put in your five-gallon pot before taking your clone from its original medium. Start filling at the halfway mark. Don’t disturb the root structure in any way while keeping the base above the soil in your five-gallon pot. Otherwise, accumulating moisture around the stem will cause it to rot.
Begin filling the area around the plant’s root mass after placing your clone in the five-gallon pot. As you do this, don’t forget to pack the soil lightly. Packing the soil too firmly can create unhealthy irrigation and root growth. Remember: the bigger the roots, the danker fruits. Pretty sure Steve Jobs said that, so it must be true.
Spiking Your Soil
Once you have transplanted your clone successfully, it’s time to spike your soil. Take a wooden dowel or bamboo stick and make four holes about three centimeters away from the pot’s edge. Each hole should be no more than half an inch wide, at a depth of about 5–6 inches. Space each cavity out evenly around the plant in a diamond shape.
Fill the first cavity with your High N Spike. Then fill the neighboring cavity with your Flowering Spike. Never fill neighboring spikes with the same blends. Fill each cavity alternately using the two blends illustrated below.

Blood Meal 1

Top Dressing
Your topsoil regulates irrigation, humidity, and pests. Any organic material like bark chips, hay, or coco coir works brilliantly. Coco coir is highly absorbent, so maintaining a watering schedule with it only requires two or three days a week. Make sure you get a brand that comes pre-washed, as some don’t wash excess salts from their mix.
Watering and Inoculation
Watering immediately after transplanting is the last step that’s most crucial. The sooner you pacify your root structure, the better. Before you begin watering, give your supply some extra fungi and bacteria. Premixtures come in powder form from products like Great White Mycorrhizae. This stuff delivers fungi and other beneficial microorganisms via the water. Apply globally to your cannabis; fill the pot until it almost spills over the top.
Fungi and bacteria are crucial for increasing your soil’s efficacy. Microbes eat exudates from the plant’s roots, turning them into nutrients. The plant can access these nutrients whenever it feels the need. This shouldn’t destabilize your soil PH too much. However, a piece of mind is never a bad thing. Buy a PPM meter if your budget allows. They’re not too expensive, and can also be found at your local garden supply store.

2018 Alpine A110 Forbidden Fruit Review: Vive La Différence!
The formula for success in today’s auto business? Copy the Germans. Outsmart an S-Class. Build a better 3 Series. Outperform a Porsche. Do what the winners do rather than waste time and money trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s a strategy that’s already shown results for automakers as genetically diverse as Cadillac and Jaguar, and it is about to transform Hyundai-Kia as it builds on the foundation of cars such as the Genesis G70, i30 N Performance, and Stinger GT. But when everything drives like a German car, then what?
The 2018 Alpine A110 strikes a blow for automotive biodiversity. On paper this compact coupe looks like a surefire 718 Cayman clone. Midmounted, turbocharged four-cylinder engine: Check. Seven-speed dual-clutch transmission: Check. 0-60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds: Check. It even has a drive mode selection button hanging off the steering wheel in the same place as the Porsche. But the good news—and we are entirely serious about this—is that it drives nothing like a Cayman. No, the Alpine A110 drives like a French car. In fact, it goes down the road in a more gloriously Gallic manner than any French car in decades. And it’s all the more special for it.
First, the backstory: Alpine was founded by Renault dealer and rally driver Jean Rédélé in Dieppe, France, in the mid-50s and specialized in building light, small sports cars around Renault mechanicals. The original A110 made its debut in 1962 and went on to score historic 1-2-3 finishes in the 1971 and 1973 editions of the Monte Carlo Rally, before capturing the World Rally Championship. But wins on Sunday didn’t translate to sales on Monday, and struggling Alpine was taken over by Renault in 1973. Two more Alpine sports cars—the A310 and A610, both powered by Renault V-6s and intended to take on Porsche’s 911—appeared before Renault effectively shelved the brand in 1995.
Alpines carried Renault badging, but when Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn officially announced Alpine’s return in early 2016, he carefully made it clear it would be a separate, stand-alone brand. Why? Ghosn knows Renault-Nissan needs premium brands that can command premium pricing and deliver fatter profit margins than, er … Renault or Nissan. He also knows launching a premium brand from scratch is expensive and time-consuming; look at how much money has been spent on Infiniti since 1989, with questionable return. The Alpine backstory is therefore critical, a shortcut to brand authenticity and credibility. Providing, of course, that backstory resonates authentically and credibly through the new A110 …
It does.
It starts with the exterior design. When the project kicked off in 2012, Alpine design chief Antony Villain took his team to visit the Jean Rédélé collection in Paris, home to 30 classic Alpines, and asked them to quickly sketch every car. “The idea was to capture the main features of an Alpine,” he says, “to discover the DNA and mood of the brand.” From this, the essence of the classic A110 was distilled down to a handful of visual elements—the headlamps, the spine over the hood, the sculpted bodysides, and the wide rear quarter panels flowing into the low tail. All those elements are there in the new A110, though in terms of surfacing and detail and execution, it is a thoroughly modern car.
But the Alpine DNA runs more than skin-deep. The original A110 was not only compact but ultra-light—it weighed just 1,322 pounds—to better make use of the available power from the four-cylinder Renault engines and deliver agile handling on tight and twisty rally roads. The new A110—longer, taller, wider than the original and equipped with 21st-century paraphernalia such as airbags, air conditioning, and sat-nav—is nevertheless by modern standards ultra-light. The fully loaded Premiere Edition tested here weighs a feathery 2,431 pounds, and the base model is 2,380 pounds. That’s a staggering 630 pounds less than a PDK-equipped Cayman.
Weight saving drove every aspect of the A110’s design and engineering. The bodywork comprises aluminum panels that cloak a bonded and riveted aluminum core structure. Aluminum suspension components are bolted to aluminum subframes front and rear, and the 18-inch wheels are forged alloy, made by Fuchs. Inside are race-style fixed back seats by Sabelt that weigh less than 29 pounds each, and in a world first, the e-brake is incorporated into the Brembo calipers on the rear wheels, saving 5.5 pounds. To save precious ounces even the stabilizer bars are hollow, and the specially developed audio system, designed by French company Focal, features speakers that weigh less than a pound.
All that attention to detail adds up to a car with a 4 percent better weight to power ratio than a PDK-equipped 718 Cayman. The base Cayman’s turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four makes 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, and the A110’s 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four, a tuned version of a Renault-Nissan engine made in Busan, South Korea, develops 248 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. But the little French car is four-tenths of a second quicker than the Porsche to 60 mph, taking just 4.3 seconds to make the sprint. Physics 101 …
OK, the Cayman will run to 170 mph while the A110 tops out at 155, but, as Alpine’s voluble deputy managing director Bernard Ollivier points out, there are very few roads on the planet where that’s going to be a decisive factor. “You don’t have to drive at 155 mph to have pleasure,” echoes Alpine international marketing director Regis Fricotte. “The A110 is about driving pleasure at any time and at any speed.” And the tight, twisty mountain roads snaking through the Luberon massif in Provence, southern France, proved his point. Within the first mile, it was clear this car is truly special.
The little Alpine dances down the road like a prima ballerina, light on its feet yet preternaturally calm. Alpine’s chassis engineers have taken advantage of the A110’s low mass to endow the car with relatively soft, long travel suspension. As a result, it effortlessly soaks up humps and heaves on the road, keeping its tires in contact with the tarmac at all times and enhancing grip and stability. Ride quality is astoundingly good for a low slung, lightweight sports car; the Alpine is supple and serene on roads that would have a Cayman jitterbugging all over the place.
The more you drive the A110, the more you’re aware of the virtuous circle set up by the Alpine engineering team’s obsession with weight. Enabling the tires to work more effectively, for example, means they can be smaller—the Alpine runs modest 205/40 R18 and 235/40 R18 Michelins front and rear—reducing unspring mass and rotational inertia. That makes the steering feel more communicative, the brakes more responsive, and the chassis feel at once agile and composed. Less mass also requires less energy to move it: Alpine claims the A110 delivers almost 20 percent better fuel economy than a Cayman on the European combined cycle fuel economy test.
The A110 has a drive mode selector offering Sport and Track settings in addition to Normal, but they only alter throttle response, transmission shift speed, steering assistance, the stability control intervention threshold, and the exhaust note. The spring and shock rates are fixed. Soft, long travel suspension isn’t usually the hot setup on the track, but a quick session on a tight and challenging private circuit tucked away in the hills of Provence showed the A110 to be fast and fun. Roll, dive, and squat motions are pronounced compared with most modern sports cars, but the transients are beautifully modulated, and once you’re used to them, you begin to understand the nuances of the physics at work.
Hot-lapping the Alpine will give you a master class in the art of weight transfer, in how to use the throttle and brakes and steering to achieve perfect balance through a turn. Because it’s so light, it’s very sensitive to inputs, and it gives delicious feedback. With a front to rear weight distribution of 44/56 percent, the driver’s hips are right at the center of gravity, enabling you to feel what the front and rear tires are doing with a clarity few other cars can match.
The A110 encourages you to take it to its limits, no matter how expert a driver you are, and looks after you when it gets there, smoothly, predictably, controllably. Alpine has tested the A110 at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe but won’t talk lap times. “This is not a car dedicated to a circuit but dedicated to being fun to drive, both for the specialist and the nonspecialist,” says Alpine’s Ollivier. If that’s a mission statement, Alpine’s absolutely nailed it.
Gripes? Although the 1.8-liter engine delivers a generous helping of midrange torque—all 236 lb-ft is available from 2,000 rpm to just past 5,000 rpm—throttle response feels a little doughy, even in Sport and Track modes. The Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch transmission isn’t as crisp and precise as Porsche’s PDK. And there are currently no plans to sell the A110 in the U.S.—the car lacks side airbags and a backup camera.
The interior is not quite as well finished as that of a Cayman, with some hard plastics evident and switchgear obviously borrowed from quotidian Renault products. But it’s well designed and surprisingly roomy given the car’s compact dimensions, and there’s leather, Alcantara, aluminum, and carbon fiber in all the places you expect them to be.
The A110 Première Edition shown here is one of a limited run of 1955 cars (the number references the year Alpine’s first car appeared), all of which were sold in just five days via an innovative mobile app. The regular A110 lineup will comprise the sport-focused Pure, which differs only in visual detail from the Premiere Edition, and the Legend, which will be configured as a more comfort-oriented GT.
One car does not a premium brand make, however, and although no one will talk specifics, the A110 is the first of what will be a whole range of Alpine vehicles. Back in 2013 Renault design boss Laurens van den Acker said the A110 needed to be “the 911 of Alpine.” In other words, a touchstone vehicle that clearly defined the Alpine brand and its DNA to a whole new generation of sports car enthusiasts. “If we do [the A110] properly,” he said, “then we can consider cars like a Panamera.” And a Cayenne or Macan, too—an Alpine SUV is reportedly already under development.
If we are to take van den Acker at his word—along with the knowing smiles of the tight lipped Alpine execs at the launch—the new A110 suggests Alpine’s future lineup is most assuredly not going to copy the Germans. Thanks to its lightweight engineering, supple suspension, and torquey engine, the new Alpine A110 feels quintessentially French, in the manner of the truly great French cars of the past.
Vive la différence!
