Something about all the riding mounts in The Ravening War being little guys makes me think they just make like pokemon noises.
And nubby little legs. Probably the LEAST intimidating steeds
And How do they fucking SADDLE these things? Usually with riding animals with sort of lumpy backs-like CAMELS-you either put the saddle behind or in front of the hump (OP has ridden a camel, I preferred the back of the hump). What do you do when your body type is literally YAM like?

amangeaux learned it was raphaniel's doing she never had a child with her late husband, which ultimately purged the entire continent into war and tore her down both politically and emotionally and still as she watched him die she grieved that she could not be with him and give him comfort in his final moments. raphaniel's last words to her are ones of genuine apology for what he did ended up doing to her because she deserved to know and because he loved her. it was the last thing he did before he knowingly jumped into what he knew would likely cause his death

if brennan had really wanted to make fructera inspired by the italian renaissance there would've been an uvano as pontifex. is the thing.

theres a good chance someone already said this (and I feel like I might've seen a post saying it?)
A woman of the Rocks family has died in almost every nation in Calorum
Fructera- likely Lazuli and Pamela
Ceresia - Rococoa
Vegetania - Citrina
The Meatlands - Sapphria
Candia - Jet
#ACOC spoilers#Just in case#Anyways. I don't think it's explicitly mentioned that Lazuli died in Fructera but there's a good chance plus I believe Pamela crossed the#Border by the time uh. That happened.#Funny enough the Dairy Islands is the only one without a Rocks death on their hands- at least not one in recent history. Kinda fitting sinc#They're the only ones not to go to war with Candia- potentially including Candia if Calroy's coup counts as a civil war.

i am SCREAMING!!!!! YESSSSSYESSSSSSSSSSSSSS ACOC is one of my FAVORITE SERIES ALL TIIIIIME!!!!!!!!
okwearebreathingwearebreathing
I’m going in-depth on the names we have thus far. Calorum is the setting that has some of the cleverest wordplay ever, period, and I want to know EVERYTHING about our new guys!!!!!
let’s get this one out of the way
Colin Provlone (Zac Oyama) - Provolone is a kind of cheese. Colin is a name of Irish/Scottish origin. It’s nice to have one simple one.
Bishop Raphaniel Charlock (Brennan Lee Mulligan) - hmmmm are we going to get an actually Bulbian cleric/warlock this season????
Anyway, the scientific name for wild radish is Raphanus raphanistrum, so that’s probably where Raphaniel came from.
wild radish has two other names - “jointed charlock” and “white charlock”. So there we go.
Your typical red radish (as Brennan described his character to look like) is a subspecies of Raphanus raphanistrum called sativus.
but!!! even MORE interesting!!!! you know what order and family radishes are in? the order BRASSICALES in the family BRASSICACEAE!!!!! Like a certain pontifex we know of??
This could be 100% unintentional, there’s a Lot of vegetables in the family Brassicaceae, but I remain optimistic.
Lady Amangeaux Epiceé du Peche (Anjali Bhimani) - so, Fructera has always been French, natch.
She is a mango! French for mango = la mangue
Amangeaux = almonds (according to google translate, I couldn’t find this word anywhere else online, it’s extremely possible that it’s just the most French-sounding way of saying “a mango”)
Epiceé = spicy (can be used as slang for y’know. spICY)
du Peche = of peach. maybe she is of house Peach?
Karna Solara (Aabria Iyengar) - this one has me kind of stumped.
there’s the obvious karn->carn->meat connection, but she’s a chili pepper. lmk if there’s some secret vegetable lore I’m missing with ‘karna’
there’s also solar -> sun, which makes sense since the crest of Brightgarden is a big sun, and we see the DM screen this season has a big sun on it.
pLUS when I looked up scientific name for chili pepper, they come from the order Solanales in the family Solanaceae.
Thane Delissandro Katzon (Lou Wilson) -
Katzon
immediately made me think of katsudon- an egg rice bowl w pork cutlet on top.
thank you @blueaerin for your post about how this is most likely a reference to Katz’s Delicatessan, a famous deli in NYC! I never would’ve know that.
Also “katson” = Finnish for “I look” - from the verb “katsoa” meaning “to look at” or “to watch over” - probably nothing.
Delissandro - deli - deli meat
Delicatessen - the double s inspired by this?
while I was looking at Finnish stuff i found out “delissa” means “at the deli” in Finnish
Thane - y’all who read Macbeth know this one.
In Anglo-Saxon culture, It’s a title of a landowner, specifically someone who was gifted land by a king.
In Scotland, it’s a feudal lord.
There’s a connotation of military use in all of the descriptions I’ve found, so judging by the armor he’s wearing, it might be being used as a term for “commander”

Karna and Colin are fascinating mirrors of one another, just complete reversals and inverses.
They are people of no national allegiances in the end, and they play to whoever side has an open seat that serves their goals and needs. Karna from Fructera to Vegetania to Ceresia to the Meat Lands. Colin from the Dairy Islands to Vegetania (which recognizes his knighthood) to Fructera (where Raphaniel was sent).
Both grew up with nothing as impoverished on the streets, are of the commonfolk. Karna considers herself fully an orphan of Fructera, and she rejects Amangeaux trying to position Karna as a daughter. She is the daughter of no one but the streets of Comida. Colin has struggled under the weight of his ancestry because the powers that be value lineage so deeply and will see him as a threat merely for his grandfather's identity—even as this lineage is nothing to him. He was orphaned by those powers that be for simple fact of birth; he is trying to orphan himself and make himself a descendant of no one of consequence.
They both have great disdain for those who as dismissive of shedding the blood of the commonfolk as a price for their games, disdainful of the exceptionalism of the powerful. But where Karna leans into ensuring an equality of bloodshed, the nobles will bleed as much as the commonfolk, Colin leans into his solidifying morals and is compelled toward a more traditional defense of the common people.
They both avoid the spotlight and direct attention, but they run in opposite directions with power. Karna works toward it, eager to play the game and hungry in her ambitions. Colin runs from it, anxious of its pull and fearful of what it asks people to do. They've both held the position of Deli's skáld, and their (for lack of a better term) preferred playstyle in this game takes the form of advisement.
The men they succeed are ghosts, dead but not gone. Karna kept a specter of Ja'Cru Dite, puppeteering his face and voice for her own ends. (Interesting that she is, now, a Phantom rogue.) Lucas Fontina, Colin's grandfather, haunts Lacramor with such presence that his apparently illegitimate son was tortuously murdered in response, and their deaths haunt Colin.
Death, an early one, hangs over them both. Wasting away in the service of the Hungry One, now believing it can be kept at bay and finding hope in that. Fearing of suffering the tortuous death of his grandfather and father, now no longer caring about this consequence and clearly finding a freedom in it.
Both have spent so much of their lives motivated by survival and made so many choices for their own self-preservation. Karna now finds that Deli is the first thing she has desired beyond that. Colin is focused beyond that on "[making] a difference with the people who did this to him" and working against the Sanctus Putris, now that he no longer cares about his secret being discovered.
They've even swapped partners in this grand game—Karna from Raphaniel to Deli and Colin from Deli to Raphaniel.
Karna has become a believer in some of the ideas of the Sanctus Putris. Colin remains a nonbeliever even as he is consecrated a holy knight of the Bulbian Church in his search to work against the Sanctus Putris and support Raphaniel, who advocates for this smoothie oblivion. The two of them work in tandem with opposing sects, each who preach conflicting eschatologies and apocalypses.
I feel like I'm missing so many other parallels and reverses between them, but this is already is such a strong basis of the inverse between them.

Welcome to the Ravening War!
(or: a primer on the political state of play after Episode 1)
Jacques Tomate thinks he would make the perfect king of Vegetania, but for all his backslapping, he hasn't garnered enough support. While Fructeran nobles support his claim, the Bulbian church says his right to the throne is inconclusive.
Lord Belvedere Cabbage insists that only Vegetanians can choose the next king.
Incensed, Tomate rallies Fructeran forces and begins seizing Vegetanian borderlands. Fructeran armies march on Greenhold and try to take the capitol by force. Amangeaux, Karna, and Bishop Charlock are forced to flee. Amangeaux returns to her family in Fructera.
The Ceresian senate sends troops to support the Vegetanians and they push back the Fructeran armies. However, their war footing upsets the Ceresian people.
Senator Focaccia uses the unrest to become Imperator of Ceresia. Focaccia withdraws his forces from Vegetania and launches an attack at the Meat Lands.
The Dairy Islands rally to support the Meat Lands. The Ceresians are having none of it, and mount a full scale assault on the Dairy Islands.
Candia refuses to go to war and support their allies, the Dairy Islands, leading to the rebellion of House Jawbreaker.
1190--the entire continent is embroiled in war.
Welcome to the Ravening War!

Lady Plumbeline so thoroughly dishonours her father. Not only betraying King Amethar, her father's dear friend, heir to the Concordant throne and a man who has shown her nothing but grace and kindness, she throws away two decades of a hard won peace her father built, she sides with Ceresia and Vegetania against Fructera's long-standing ally Candia, and goes against every wish Emperor Gustavo Uvano could have regarding the Concordant Empire and House Uvano. And in the end she is killed by a teenage boy in front of Castle Candia, having gained nothing but dishonour.
All that being said she's an absolute smokeshow and that hot plum lady can commit as many crimes as she wants.

Timeline of Ravening War from A Crown of Candy:
YoB 1188: Conflict between Fructera and Vegetania begins: Count Jacques Tomaté (Fructeran noble) became next in line (by birthright) for throne of Greenhold (in Vegetania).
1190: War begins, officially.
Around 1191, Saccharina Ghee is born?
Queen Pamelia Rocks, wife of King Jadain, was previously a Fructeran noble, and had ties to Count Jacques Tomaté. His leadership in Fructera crumbled.
Lazuli Rocks used magic seeking someone who could rule instead. This led her to young Gustavo Uvano.
Lazuli dies first, to ensure Uvano as ruler.
Sapphria spent time in the Meat Lands on a mission to raise Basha Myaso to power. She was killed by Carnish assassins.
Citrina took the Bulbian faith very seriously. She also acknowledged it and the Church as separate institutions when the sisters argued about the Catherine Ghee situation.
Citrina died seemingly by tragic accident, run down in the streets. In fact, young Belizabeth Brassica ordered this done, for reasons unknown. Prior to the Ravening War, Belizabeth was a bishop in the church.
Citrina was canonized as a Saint in the Bulbian Church after her death.
Rococoa dies last, at the final battle in Pangranos.
YoB 1195: The War ends. Concord forms
12th Harvestdusk, 1196: Catherine Ghee dies from illness.
Amethar and Caramelinda wed days later.
Princesses Jet and Ruby Rocks are born in 1197.

I hate that peppers are technically fruit so count these as spite fueled creations
At home all over Fructera's shores - the Pepper Crabs!
Looking for something actually fruit-y?

Due to the unendingly messy botanical vs culinary classifications of fruits and vegetables, the existence of Fructera and Vegetania imply a truly fascinating ethnic and cultural history, especially with the existence of people such as Jacques Tomaté, who is in canon referenced to “fit in with both countries,” and who proposes a sort of pan-vegetationism which Vegetania wholeheartedly rejects. I’d love to know more.

I think I’ve figured out who will be the target of the Scrumptious Scoundrels ambush next episode
It is specifically mentioned that Lazuli dies in 1190 (the year episodes 2&3 take place) after her mother, Pamelia Rocks, but it is never stated how or when Pamelia dies. We know she is alive at least in 1188, as we saw her in episode 1.
Pamelia is fructeran by blood, despite having married into Candian royalty. The target of the ambush is said to be, moving under the banner and guise of Fructera, and since Pamelia is Candian by marriage, moving under Fructeran banners would technically be a guise.
According to an FAQ with Brennan, Pamelia was in an alliance with Tomaté, giving her the ability to potentially keep Candian forces from joining the war, or having them join on the side of Tomaté. This could be what the FDA meant when they referred to the target as a “dangerous untenable political operative”
The Glucian roads proximity to Castle Candy is specifically pointed out.
This is more of a reach based on a post I saw a few days ago (linked here) but it is shown in ACOC that the princesses had an alliance against and did not agree with their mothers politics. If Sapphria is a part of FDA, she may have been the one to supply information of her mothers movements to the organization, or even have organized this ambush in order to get Pamelia out of the way to begin with
TL;DR - I think Pamelia is the target of episode 3s ambush

also, from the wording of the ledger, I think it's implying that Amangeaux might have taken out debts, and the consequence was that the people she borrowed money from REALLY needed it back
#TRW Spoilers#''your debts quake beneath the crumbling grounds of the Pinoir House''#''alleviating the deep set ledgers we carry in your name''#LIKE idk if anyone else noticing but at first I assumed it was like. She was at risk bc of the debts but I think it might be that either#By accident or On Purpose she led to the fall of a noble/royal house because she took too much money from them. Maybe connected to why she#Married outside of Fructera? If the Pinoir house is fructeran which is likely considering wine and grapes
