This is my cat Myla. When I was fifteen years old my best friend (who lived directly behind me) called me saying she could hear a cat meowing outside. I live in Wisconsin, we get some pretty wicked cold winters. Well this winter was pretty bad. It was negative 11 degrees when my friend called me. It had actually been in the negatives for a little over a week at that point. Anyways, I put on my boots and jacket and walked through our back yards. When I got over there I could hear her meowing. Next to my friends house is a very large pine tree; it’s taller than the houses. I could hear meows coming from underneath it. I called my mom and told her to meet me at my friends house on the way home. I started to dig the snow out from under the tree. By time my mom got there I was already half way done. So I took a break while my mom started to clear some of the snow. After about and hour of digging we finally got to her. She looked awful. I picked her up and wrapped her in my jacket. The poor girl was freezing. I brought her into my room and gave her a bowl of food and one of water. It was too late in the day to take her to the vet; so we waited until morning. When we took her to the vet they checked to see if she had a microchip, she did. So the vet called the owners. The owners said that they were bringing in the groceries about a week ago and got into a fight and left the front door wide open. That’s how they think she got out. The owners lived about 20 miles or more away from us. So this cat was outside in the freezing negative weather for a week-ish and traveled over 20 miles just to get stuck under a tree. The vet explained that she had severe frostbite to certain parts of her body. Her hind left leg, tail and ears would have to be amputated. Also one of her toes and most of her nose would have to naturally fall of from the frostbite. Well, the owners said that they weren’t going to pay for that. They said they didn’t want her anymore if she wasn’t going to be a perfect cat. My mom and I were still there. We didn’t want to leave the cat until her owners came. But when the vet tech told us they had given her up they said that they were most likely going to put her down. My mom and I looked at each other, our hearts aching for this poor cat. I whispered to my mom “Mom, I can’t let this cat be put down. Let me take care of her”. So my mom said “We’ll take her”. The vet tech looked surprised but nodded. She filled us in on what the previous owners told her and told us all what needed to be done. My mom didn’t hesitate to pay them. We picked her up the next day after her surgery. Since I was homeschooled I tended to her injuries during the healing process. 5 years later she’s living life just like a normal cat. She gets around just fine on her three legs. It’s actually quite cute because she hops like a bunny. She can jump on and off my bed with ease. She can even jump over the gate at my door. After everything she went through she is still a sweet and loving cat. And she cuddles with me every night.

Tl;dr I rescued a frozen cat with frostbite and took her to the vet. The original owners didn’t want her because she wouldn’t be “perfect” anymore. She was going to get put down. I decided to adopt her and now she’s my baby.
