Now contrast cute puppy antics with Angel’s villainy, which is a daily problem and at this point probably impossible to fix. But, hey, every house needs a horror. It keeps things interesting.

Somehow she catalogs the location of every accessible food source in the house and bides her time until there is no one around to catch her in the act.

She once waited 3 days to have the living room to herself long enough to climb from an armchair across the top of a wire crate to the flyball duffel bag that was left unzipped. She demolished a whole bag of treats and left the shredded plastic bag as her calling card.

Another occasion, she climbed a chair to get on top of the kitchen table and chew open the brand new cardboard box of chocolate mint Clif protein bars and drag the fully wrapped and sealed packages back to her bed on the kitchen floor to meticulously open each one, lick every last bit of chocolate coating from each wrapper, and leave them all on her chocolate smothered, previously white fluffy bed. If the chocolate consumption concerns you, believe me when I say this dog is indestructible. Despite our best efforts to keep her away from it, over the years she has lived through countless chocolate cake slices, holiday chocolates, half a tray of fudge, and a whole pan of fresh brownies. She cannot be killed and she is going to make that everyone else’s problem.

She once made my family get in a fight over who stole two cupcakes before the birthday party because she got them out of the closed catering box on the kitchen table without touching any of the other two dozen cupcakes or smudging frosting as evidence and leaving the lid closed behind herself. We were about to call the bakery to complain when the wrappers were found in the living room.

Also the famous ~1.5lbs of chuck roast under 1 minute. My mom was cooking dinner and left the raw 3lbs roast on the cutting board to get an ingredient from the fridge and when she turned back around Angel was making her getaway, nearly as wide as she was long.

Just this week, she has burgled a bag of tortillas, two ziplocks of leftover training chicken, and a hamburger. She will steal right out of your hand and mouth if she can get away with it. Angel lives to commit sins one after the other and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve already decided that once she is finally banished from this earthly plane I must find another wretched creacher to terrorize my home as soon as possible. If my existence isn’t constant vigilance against canine crimes then I don’t want it.

Oh i know! Have you got any anecdotes about dogs outsmarting you in training or finding a looohole in day to day tasks?

Essie is a master of this and she’s not even a year old yet (next week!!) she makes training so mentally difficult for me because she has discovered if she resets herself she will get to perform the behavior that makes rewards happen!

On leash: run out to the end just to launch herself in the air to kiss my face on her way back to heel position.

On her stationing mat: when I start increasing duration between treats and she doesn’t feel like working on her patience she will hop off the mat and right back on. She also likes to play “how much of myself can I have off the mat and still get treats” (spoiler: it’s not very much)

Tinkle bells: slam the bells repeatedly and when I open the door she stands right outside the door and staring at me because it’s no fun going potty or exploring the yard unless I’m standing 30’ away on the porch watching her. If we’re at an impasse she’ll step inside, ring the bells a few times, look at me and then go back through the door and look at me again.

All these little nuisance behaviors are just snapshots. They’re not consistent problems, which is why they’re funny. Dogs are so smart and I love how their personalities flavor their communication and how they navigate their relationships with us.
