YOU KNOW WHAT I’M ABOUT TO ASK OF YOU. ARURU SWEEP. SPREADING MY PROPAGANDA AND SPREADING IT NOW I NEED YOU ALL TO DO ONE OF THE AZURES OF ALL TIME JUSTICE
I’M GOING TO GO AUTISTIC IN DEPTH BELOW THE CUT. ARCANA ARCADIA SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT HER MOON SYMBOLISM. SHE IS THE MOON. SHE IS SOMETHING THAT CAN ONLY GLOW BY REFLECTING THE LIGHT OF THE SUN, SOMETHING GREATER, SOMETHING LARGER. SHE IS A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS FOR THOSE AROUND HER SOLELY BECAUSE SHE REFLECTS THEIR OWN LIGHT AND THEIR OWN POTENTIAL BACK AT THEM, BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING THAT IN HER MIND SHE HAS NEVER HAD AND NEVER WILL HAVE.
WHEN SHE FEELS LIKE THAT LIGHT HAS BEEN RIPPED AWAY FROM HER SHE COMPLETELY FUCKING BREAKS BECAUSE WITHOUT THE SUN THE MOON IS JUST A PIECE OF ROCK, WITHOUT THE REST OF HER FOUND FAMILY SHE IS NOTHING. SHE HAS TO FIGHT THE VERY THING THAT GIVES HER LIGHT AND IT HURTS ME VISCERALLY.
HER ARC MAKES ME FEEL SO MUCH. ARURU AND HER SUNS, HER FAMILY, ARE INTERTWINED ON THE STAGE OF THE SKY, THEY WILL HAVE THEIR DUSKS AND THEIR DAWNS WHERE THEY CAN MEET IN THE MIDDLE, BUT AT THEIR CORE STAGE GIRLS AND THE SUN AND MOON ALIKE ARE THINGS DEFINED BY THE WAY THEY CHASE AFTER EACH OTHER FOR THEIR CLAIM TO THE SKY, TO POSITION ZERO. THEY WILL NEED TO STAND APART OUT OF SIGHT OF THE OTHER SOMETIMES AND THAT IS SOMETHING SO FUNDAMENTALLY TERRIFYING TO ARURU BECAUSE IT GOES AGAINST EVERYTHING SHE IS BUT IT’S SOMETHING SHE NEEDS TO LEARN TO DO AND. AUGHHHHH
In conlusion: The moon. Aruru sweep.

Propaganda below!
Kiana Kaslana
She was named after the moon. One of her earliest Battlesuits is called Knight Moonbeam. Kiana's theme song is called Moon Halo and has the line, "Turned into a moon that always tells the warmth and brightness of the sun". The Ultimate attack animation of what is her final form, Herrscher of Finality, has her silhouetted in front of the moon. Kiana's story ends with her having to live on the moon for roughly 8-10 years.
It is also worth noting that the Kiana first appeared in an earlier game called FlyMe2theMoon where Kiana uses a jetpack to get to the moon.
shes canonly lesbian shes named after a moon goddess shes literally stuck on the moon for nearly a decade shes a clone but also now that person shes cat themed shes partly cloned from someone who always has important moon events™️ shes got a girlfriend she literally has natural white hair
Aruru Otsuki
In a franchise full of girls that wield melee weapons or traditional ranged things like bows and crossbows Aruru is running around with twin revolvers. She may be the local genki girl but she will shoot you dead if you stand in her way. She also can't cook for shit and she WILL (unintentionally) poison you if you dare to eat her food.

"I think I am beginning to understand why grief feels like suspense," C. S. Lewis wrote after the death of his wife. "It comes from the frustration of so many impulses that had become habitual. Thought after thought, feeling after feeling, action after action, had H. for their object. Now their target is gone. I keep on through habit fitting an arrow to the string, then I remember and have to lay the bow down. So many roads lead thought to H. I set out on one of them. But now there's an impassable frontierpost across it. So many roads once; now so many cul de sacs."
— from Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, with excerpted passage from Lewis' A Grief Observed

Until now I had been able only to grieve, not mourn. Grief was passive. Grief happened. Mourning, the act of dealing with grief, required attention.
--
Until now there had been every urgent reason to obliterate any attention that might otherwise have been paid, banish the thought, bring fresh adrenaline to bear on the crisis of the day.
--
What would I give to be able to discuss anything at all with John? What would I give to be able to say one small thing that made him happy? What would that one small thing be? If I had said it in time would it have worked?
--
The word it defined was five letters, “waste.” Was that what we had done? Was that what he thought we had done? Why didn’t I listen when he said we weren’t having any fun? Why didn’t I move to change our life?
--
Only the survivors of a death are truly left alone. The connections that made up their life—both the deep connections and the apparently (until they are broken) insignificant connections—have all vanished. John and I were married for forty years. During all but the first five months of our marriage, when John was still working at Time, we both worked at home. We were together twenty-four hours a day, a fact that remained a source of both merriment and foreboding to my mother and aunts. “For richer for poorer but never for lunch,” one or another of them frequently said in the early years of our marriage. I could not count the times during the average day when something would come up that I needed to tell him. This impulse did not end with his death. What ended was the possibility of response.

--
We imagined we knew everything the other thought, even when we did not necessarily want to know it, but in fact, I have come to see, we knew not the smallest fraction of what there was to know.
--
We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we push it away, failed by our very complication, so wired that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves. As we were. As we are no longer. As we will one day not be at all.

SLAMS MY PAPERS ON THE DESK. I tried to doublecheck a lot of this but it still does have a few holes in it so could I be wrong? Am I reading into things too much? Both very possible. But still. Autism under the cut.
Obviously Starira diversified weapon designs a LOT with the new cast but Frontier embodies that more than any other group I feel; new state-of-the-art tech is their defining point when you contrast them against the other new schools. Not a single conventional sword in the roster. Good for them.
Aruru is obviously the most egregious example of this. In the context of revues where removing cloaks requires getting in close with some kind of sharp edge, ranged weapons are an inherent disadvantage, especially if you’re forced on the defensive. Arrows you can make work, sure, but bullets? In a typical 1v1 revue you are not tearing somebody’s cloak off with that, especially not the more elaborate ones e.g. Siegfeld or Rinmeikan (at least not without genuinely injuring them, which is its own fun bag of potential implications that I’ll leave to simmer)
But that’s the thing. We don’t actually start seeing one-on-one revues until Arcana Arcadia. It’s all of Frontier fighting as a collective (And keep in mind, even together, they still lose the revue to Seisho), and then the whole group coming together to deal with the Korosu. Every other stage girl from Frontier has at least some manner of sharpened point or blade on their weapons to be used for removing cloaks, so it isn’t something Aruru has to do directly. She’s in her element here; she thrives on stage in the company of her family, working together with them, therefore the others covering that weakness for her makes perfect sense.
Enter Arcana Arcadia, which completely throws that familiar element out the window.
So how do Aruru and her weapons function in the context of a legitimate revue, when she’s forced to finally fight on her own?
They don’t.
That’s the point.
Even before Aruru gives them the first serious push they need to move forward, the others know and have already accepted what they’re getting into by committing to the path of a stage girl. They’ve always been capable of forging ahead on their own, even if it means inevitable partings or competition down the line, and their weapons have the hallmarks of that in sporting some variety of cutting edge.
Aruru is the exception to this
Whether or not it’s intentional, it’s extremely telling.
Aruru Otsuki and her weapons alike are the illusion of brilliance, the moon reflecting light from the sun. Something that appears both self-reliant and brilliant at a glance when you don’t think to question it deeper beyond ‘Why the fuck does that stage girl have MULTIPLE GUNS’, yet they both completely crumble under scrutiny without support. Her weapons are telling enough of abundant potential for brilliance if channeled into her growth as an individual stage girl; hell, she’s the only one from Frontier to be considered a stage girl at all at the start of Chapter 10. But moving forward by herself, for herself, isn’t what she wants from being on stage. Aruru doesn’t want to participate in the revues on her own or compete with the others for the lead role. She doesn’t want to be apart from her family. She doesn’t want to confront her own emptiness and lack of identity made manifest in the very place she sought out to escape it.
Still, there’s only so far she can go, only so many rules of the stage she can change on the fly, before facing that situation is inevitable.
I don’t have anything to say for this point that isn’t blatantly in the text. Please read Arcana Arcadia. Please. Please.
If the Starira weapons were designed with the intent of reflecting the stage girls they belong to like Seisho’s, I firmly believe that Aruru’s development in Arcana Arcadia would be enough to warrant some kind of change to her weapon in a similar vein to Hikari in episode 8, were it not for the amount of work and subsequent issues implementing that into the game itself would cause. I don’t know exact details of how it would work or what would change, but there’s absolutely enough development to prompt it. Out of all the development in ALL OF STARIRA for everyone across the board, Aruru is the only character who gets an ‘I am reborn’ sequence. Ever. (Which I don’t think people talk about enough, by the way) I think that alone speaks for itself as to the magnitude of growth she undergoes.
Also I don’t have a fancy segway into this but there’s something to be said about the actual mechanism of firing a gun involving high pressure explosions when Revue Frontier is Aruru Otsuki herself being put under high pressure and exploding. Honestly I think she should have exploded more considering the amount of buildup but. That’s a thought for another day.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk I enjoy being mentally unwell over Frontier School of Arts a lot. Goodnight everybody. Watch Revue Starlight, read Arcana Arcadia, listen to Yami o Terasumono, and tune in next time to Pallastronomy for ‘Wall of text about my thoughts on Aruru Otsuki as potentially having BPD’ if I ever get around to writing it
I love the symbolism of the weapons in the revue starlight! They say so much about the characters and their attitude towards performing and the revues.
You can understand a character in an entirely new light!

👨‍🏫 Grief/Suspense
{book quote}
I think I am beginning to understand why grief feels like suspense. It comes from the frustration of so many impulses that had become habitual. Thought after thought feeling after feeling, action after action, she. for their object. Now their target is gone. I keep on through habit fitting an harrow to the string, then I remember and have to lay the bow down. So many roads lead thought to her. I set out on one of them. But now there's an impassable frontierpost across it. So many roads once; now so many dead ends.

Having Aruru fic thoughts… namely if I want to just bite the bullet and cut it into chapters at this point bc it is getting long as shit. Bonus points bc that gives me opportunity to name the chapters after moon phases/lunar phenomena in accordance to the progression of Aruru’s development. And also the Revue Frontier chapter deserves to be called Blood Moon

3 (both in and outside of frontier!), 5, and 12 for the revstar ask game!! teehee :3c
Going to try so hard not to give multiple answers for these but am probably going to fail lmao
Putting this below the cut. Azure ramble purposes you know how it is
3. What is your favorite friendship / character dynamic from the franchise?
In Frontier? Aruru and Shizuha hands down. It’s a dynamic I don’t think gets explored enough which makes me sad bc the parallels are there!! Albeit for different reasons both of them were terrified of aiming for position zero and bottling up parts of themselves for fear of hurting people and ending up alone and it’s just. Something about Aruru finally giving Shizuha the push she needed to keep moving forward and Shizuha being the one spearheading the effort to give that same push back to Aruru in Arcana Arcadia is just. Augh. My fucking heart. I want them to bond over that more in the future I want Aruru and Shizuha rivalry with the mutual understanding of ‘I don’t have to hold back or hide anything from you no matter what happens or where we go from here’ please
Aruru and Misora is a very close second bc hehe… the siblings ever. And also bc I am very very partial to friendships with my kins that remind me of me and my best friend and Aruru and Misora is definitely one of those lmao.
As for outside of Frontier? Uhhh. Literally any Fumi dynamic but Tamafumi and Akifumi especially. Idk what it is they just fucking fascinate me I want to study them under a microscope.
5. What is your favorite revue song?
Gotta hand it to Koi no Makyuu. I’m an absolute fucking sucker for good brass sections I’m sorry. Super Star Spectacle, Wagamama Highway (but specifically That One Section in the middle. You know the one), Hokori to Ogori, and Starlight are really close, and Yami o Terasumono gets an honourary mention by virtue of both being a banger and killing me instantly in context
12. What character(s) do you wish you knew more about/had a better read on?
Uhhh Seiran and Siegfeld juniour high kids by virtue of ‘I don’t know anything about them because I’ve barely seen them storywise’ but in regards to characters I’ve seen in action…. Surprise it’s a Frontier answer again. I’d have to say Lalafin on that front! I’d like to think I have decent understanding of Misora + Tsukasa + Shizuha and Aruru is… well. That’s literally me lmao. But I just don’t have that with Lalafin for some reason. I wanna know more about her man! There’s a level of understanding with what we know of the others’ backgrounds (and Shizuha and Tsukasa’s first year) where it sort of clicks that ‘oh yeah that’s why they do this or that’ but Lalafin just. Evades me. Maybe it’s because the info is scarce since the Frontier kids as individuals haven’t really been a focus until AA or maybe I’m just not picking it up but I’d love to be able to piece her together like I do the others. I’d also love to dig into more stuff with Shizuha just bc of the very clear density of stuff she’s got going on that I want to pick apart the details of more but she’s got more to work with too so. Honestly I’d kill for a better read on literally all of the non-Aruru Frontier kids. I want them to get more screentime I want more to work with! I want what Arcana Arcadia gave me with insight into Aruru but for the other four they deserve it I want to study them all
