Based on the 1951 novel of the same name, From Here to Eternity went on to become the second highest grossing film of 1953 (behind Biblical epic The Robe). War films are still infiltrating the Best Picture winners list and will continue for.....basically the end of time I assume.
Reviews praised both the quality of the adaption and the cast, mostly for Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra.
I'm not going to lie, I do not typically rewatch the Best Picture winners prior to writing these. On one hand, it's a huge downfall for writing these reviews without showing bias to the recently-watched upsets, but also there are some winners I don't care to see again! This is one of them! I do not remember it! I remember Ernest Borgnine having a fight scene, and I remember it being a war film. Eh.
Outbeat by the war drama, romantic comedy Roman Holiday was still highly successful in 1953. Introducing Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday was highlighted as the "Picture of the Month" in Seventeen magazine.
It's very teen/young adult romance-y, but it's super cute! Princess is tired of being a princess and falls (literally) into the hands of an American preparing to interview her? Hallmark, who? Nothing truly magnificent to say about it, but I still enjoyed it.
At the Academy Awards, From Here to Eternity took home 8 Oscars from 13 noms, putting it in the top 15 of all time for both wins and noms.
Both Frank Sinatra and Audrey Hepburn snagged Oscars and Golden Globes for their performances. Hepburn was also recognized at the NYFCC Awards and the BAFTAs.
I've also included some more recent awards from the Directors and Writers Guilds, which began in 1938 and 1949, respectively.
Unofficial Review: While From Here to Eternity was unmemorable, I just don't think Roman Holiday is a fair upset. It has the face of an upset, but it just didn't give me enough.
From Here to Eternity is available on Max and Roman Holiday is free on Pluto.

Movies I’ve Watched - 2024
158/?: From Here to Eternity (1953) - watched 6/4/24
I’ve seen this one before, and it is a good solid movie. It manages its sense of foreboding well, with it ramping up subtly (and then less subtly) as the film reaches its climax. The performances here are great, particularly Burt Lancaster, who I have developed an appreciation for as I’ve gone on this Oscar journey.

From Here to Eternity (1953)
A young private is punished by his superiors and fellows alike for not boxing in his squad’s team.
Easily the better aspects are the parts exposing the pettiness of the military mind. The officers are corrupt, there’s bullying and abuse of power, as well as misguided attempts to assert masculinity over the most trivial misdemeanors. Though we are aligned with a soldier, he’s non-cooperative which makes him an outsider and this identifiable with the audience.
In spite of these minor revelations about army life the main bulk still works as fairly effective US army propaganda by showing that not following orders was a futile act and justifying the entire operation by setting it just prior to the Pearl Harbor attacks. This is somewhat hypocritical since the boxing serves no real military purpose and punishing the private for exercising his rights contradicts their core principles.
There’s all the basic war subtext one would expect about duty, with the usual romance sub-plot thrown in though none of it is very original or inspired. The acting is probably the strongest element as it carries the drama long before the action deigns to show up, since the knife fights are somewhat underwhelming.
Overall, the tone is stuffy since it all takes place on a military base, the main aesthetic of which is uniformity. What scarce humour there is is repressed and tries too hard, the masculine kind. Women are displayed as sex objects, the main two are a sex-worker and an adulteress and while they don’t seem to be entirely at fault, certainly less so than the men, they’re treated poorly by other characters and script.
3/10 -This one’s bad but there’s some good in it, just there-
-Cigarettes with filtered tips are seen in some scenes, though the film is set in the 40s before that kind were invented.
-Due to the strict schedule, the scene where the Japanese fighters attack was shot in just half a day.
-Many of the props were obtained by searching army surplus stores, the actors then had to be trained to use the outdated equipment.
