Turned out to be a late-night #FroggyFriday, too! Frog trio in amber colored glass by René Lalique (French, 1860-1945), d. 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm); likely originally a button or stickpin, a guilded brass mount was later added to make it a brooch. Walters Art Museum

Lalique was one of the finest jewelers of the Art Nouveau period, but his movement into mainly glassworks was concurrent with the rise of Art Deco; this piece from 1911 is a good example of this transitional period in design.

Here is an even earlier example:

Frog necklace by Lalique, c. 1902-3, 18k gold, diamond, enamel, and glass. Private collection.

Although this fabulous frog necklace is still from within the Art Nouveau period, these chunky square frogs seem like precursors to the later Art Deco aesthetic, as well as Lalique's own shift from jewelry to art glass. As noted in the 2008 exhibition catalog for Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique, "Lalique's final designs in jewelry incorporated glass as the major element in repeating patterns of abstracted forms such as frogs" (p. 46; Lalique's frog necklace is cat.152, photo on p. 49).

Good evening, vampire hunters.

I had a lot going on in my personal life this week, but it has not prevented me from working diligently while the third pilot episode is still being tested. Briar, one of the Anura Duchy’s inhabitants and a guide for our heroes during their visit, is now available on Society6 for purchase. At the time that Treyton will meet her, she is still under stress by the current situation, having to communicate with the human race for the first time, and the fact that her brother has been missing for a short while so be sure to be sympathetic. Not everyone will have a change of heart overnight especially when Briar and her people are put into consideration. D: Nevertheless, it is the least of Treyton’s concerns because hunting down the yara-ma-yha-who before it swallows its next victim is his top priority.

And now, I present to you with Briar’s bio;

Much like an ordinary frog that can blend in with its environment to avoid discovery, magic practitioners in the Anura Duchy use their gift to shroud their colonies from a predator’s sight. Briar is one particular sorceress from her kingdom that practices such spells to ensure the safety of her people and more importantly, her brother, Phillippe. They’ve never gotten along famously due to their opposing values, yet they have developed a strong kinship for one another. Whenever Phillippe explores Thorn Swamp on his own or put a defensive tactic of his own during times of distress, Briar would spend hours or days on end worrying about him. The cause of her timidity is not limited to Phillippe, however. Her apprehension with interacting with creatures above the food chain is normal in her society, but since Phillippe is consistently out and about, Briar wonders when or if she’ll have little choice to let go of her fear the next time he’s gone. The day a mysterious red-skinned creature that resembled her kind decided to call Thorn Swamp its home was the last straw for the young frog. She believed that the Anura Duchy would not be able to keep it at bay by further isolating itself in its swampy habitat so she accomplished the impossible by reaching out to the nearest human civilization to request its assistance; Norsdale. Whether a band of heroes that it has sent would succeed in exterminating the gluttonous lurker will determine whether or not Briar is ready to rely on what her people fear most.
