Have you ever seen a turtle frog (Myobatrachus gouldii)? Named for its uniquely shaped body—which resembles a turtle without a shell—this amphibian inhabits arid parts of southwestern Australia. It can grow up to 1.9 in (5 cm) long. The turtle frog uses its muscular forelimbs and unwebbed feet to tunnel through the sand headfirst, digging burrows as far as 3.9 ft (1.2 m) underground.

I fucking love Pumpkin Toadlets. Their ear drums are so small that they can't hear their own mating call properly!
Little funky guys.
And yet they live on.
So there are several species of frogs that have evolved to be so small that their vestibular balance system doesn't work well and I'm sorry but it's the funniest thing to watch them try to jump.

So... things are even tighter financially than my spouse and I had thought when I first made my ko-fi. 😬 some work that we were counting on for money was cancelled. and we need to buy food and meds soon.
and so I've basically dug out every piece of pottery in my house to try and sell. I've made two posts of available pieces; one for sculptural pieces, and the other for plates and bowls and such.
Some of the pieces are back from my wheel-throwing days and are a little heavy. A few of them are from my generous and wonderful studio partners. as always, I'm upfront about any flaws. a couple things are priced a little high because they're especially precious to me
thanks to anyone who buys anything, or shares any of the three posts, I really appreciate all the support, it means so much to me ❤️
and this tiny little frog is a gift for the first person who spends $100 CAD or more before shipping
the frog is gone!! you guys are amazing, I appreciate you all so much ❤️

The remarkable larval morphology of Rhaebo nasicus (Werner, 1903) (Amphibia: Anura: Bufonidae) with the erection of a new bufonid genus and insights into the evolution of suctorial tadpoles
Pedro Henrique dos Santos Dias, Jackson R. Phillips, Martín O. Pereyra, D. Bruce Means, Alexander Haas & Philippe J. R. Kok
Abstract
Tadpoles serve as crucial evidence for testing systematic and taxonomic hypotheses. Suctorial tadpoles collected in Guyana were initially assigned to Rhaebo nasicus through molecular phylogeny. Subsequent analysis of larval and adult morphological traits revealed synapomorphies within the clade encompassing R. nasicus and R. ceratophrys, prompting the recognition of a new genus described herein as Adhaerobufo. The new genus is distinguished from other bufonids by specific phenotypic traits including an enlarged, suctorial oral disc with distinct papillae arrangements, and the presence of certain muscles and narial vacuities at the larval stage. However, only a few adult external characteristics (e.g., enlarged eyelids, infraocular cream spot), seem to be reliably discriminative from related genera. This study underscores the significance of larval morphology in anuran systematics and offers new insights into the evolution of suctorial and gastromyzophorous larvae within bufonids.

Kihansi Spray Toad (Nectophrynoides asperginis), family Bufonidae, Tanzania
EXTINCT IN THE WILD. (declared in 2009)
This species was endemic to a two-hectare (5-acre) area at the base of the Kihansi River waterfall in the Udzungwa escarpment of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania.
The small population of this habitat restricted toad fluctuated greatly over the years, with the largest known peak being ~29,000 individuals. By 2004, only 3 individuals were found, the last of the frogs seen in the wild.
Extinction in the wild was due to habitat destruction and degradation due to the construction of the Kihansi Dam in 1999.
The species is being bred and cared for in zoos around the world, and reintroduction efforts are under way (which includes habitat restoration).
