You are everything I aspire to be
Tumblr media
If parenting has taught me anything, it is the importance of getting down on your hands and knees and teaching not just facts, but love and enthusiasm for the natural world.
This is my son Q and me. I have dozens of photos like this by now, even though he is just two years old.
Every chance I get, I will kneel down with him and show him the little creatures all around us. Especially when they are frogs. He loves frogs for some reason. No idea why.
It is important that we all see this together. It is beautiful. It is magnificent. We are here. It is improbable to the highest degree. It is fleeting, but it is everything we get. And we can get so, so much of it. If we just get our faces into it and really absorb it.
So that's what l'm trying to do here, I guess. Get all of you to join me in the reeds. And I am so happy to have so many of you along for the journey.

I finished a shawl! Knitting! Aaaaand I am probably going to have to frog it.
Tumblr media
For reasons I have not been able to puzzle out, the top edge (which is the end of the rows) has NO stretch.
Tumblr media
Therefore, the whole thing sort of buckles/puckers around the top center, which is where I started. There has got to be some method to having a springier edge, I just don’t know what it is.
I do like how the patterning in the body came out, anyway, and it was good practice. I’m faster and smoother now with both knitting and purling than I was when I began. Since that was, ultimately, the goal? I’m feeling pretty good about it overall.
MISTAKES ARE FOR LEARNING! FUCKUPS ALLOW FOR GROWTH.
if anybody has thoughts about how I might have achieved a stretchier edge with my row ends, please advise.
The pattern is Lionberry by Narniel of Endor and is a free download on Ravelry.

so this is how i started down the rabbit hole of wanting/needing a frog pond...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it all started when i was dumb and left my gorilla wagon outside during that hurricane that came on through, beryl betty, beejou, beetlejuice... already forgot the name. but it dumped a TON of water in the span of only 1.5 days, so of course the wagon got full super quick. i guess it also rained frogs instead of cats and dogs because some frogs laid eggs in said wagon cart. now the thing is, i own this cart wagon gorilla because i need it. i use it quite often, considering how many raised beds i've been constructing and replenishing compost for. but frogs win over me.
i've been checking my no longer gorilla but now frog wagon cart daily since then, and now i'm down to i believe 5ish tadpoles just chilling in there. and yes i washed my hands thoroughly after this video. also wave hi to me at the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i believe i have picked a good dedicated space for a permanent frog pond in the middle of one of my raised beds in the front yard. i plan on surrounding it with vegetable plants all year round (dinosaur kale in the winter, then next year will be purple tomatillos). i had cantaloupe plants in it before but man i couldn't reach the middle both because of my back and because the bed is just too square.
so the only remaining question i have before i commit to this is that do i need a run-off drain drilled near the top for the next downpour, or does it just do that on it's own and no worries about it?? this is an old hydroponics bin that i used once and was like 'cool. but a tower would be better' so i don't plan on using it ever again for that purpose.
thank you to soooo many people who helped me when i first panic posted about what to do: @the-thing-of-worms, @martha-anne, @roseredsnow, and @mrsjdavis. without your advice or thoughts i would not have kept going with this idea!
i now know to add plants to the water, and going to add rocks of various sizes in and around the pond. i'm debating on adding fish, because as much as i would love that idea - i'm worried about the pond freezing in winter and also not only parsley but other cats in the neighborhood just coming and eating them all. but i guess that's nature for you. totes going to put in a water pump to keep the water moving, that will be like step 1.
Tumblr media
oh, and a photo of the frogs that live in my yard. no idea of the species, but man they are everywhere.

Hey, probably a question you have heard a thousant times. But what is the best way to get into any of the fiber arts? Books? Youtube? Actual people teaching you? (and if so how in the hell do you find them)
I started crochet and knitting but I pretty much can't get out of the basics, I can't managed to finish something that I have started cuz I always get frustrated that it's starting to look bad...
Hi! That's actually a really good question. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending on how u look at it) the only way to get any better at fibre crafts, is to keep doing them. Practice really does make perfect. There is no book or video tutorial or in-person teacher that holds the one ultimate secret that will make you Good At Crafts. All of these can be valuable resources if you struggle to understand how to do a specific thing; you can be taught stitches, and how to read charts, and such things. But the only way to really learn is to practice.
This is because there are more skills involved in crafting than just knowing how to do certain stitches. Confidence, patience, frustration tolerance: you can't learn that from tutorials. These are essential skills that you need to build. And the best way to build them, I'm afraid, is to actually finish the damn thing. Even if it has mistakes. Even if it "looks bad". You need to learn how to tolerate imperfections, if you ever want to get anything done.
Now that doesn't mean you should bully yourself. If you get easily bored and frustrated, leave the scarves and sweaters for now, and start small. Potholders, dishcloths, scrubbies or coasters are all projects that finish up quickly and yield usable objects, even when they are not perfect. If you never allow yourself the dopamine rush of Fuck Yeah I Made That, how do you expect yourself to build up the resilience to stick through the parts where it is slow and difficult and makes your fingers hurt?
Here are Ravelry searches for free dishcloth and potholder patterns.
Of course that doesn't mean you should only do those projects. You can do whatever you want. The most important thing is to teach yourself that you can have success, and the only way to do this is to successfully make things.
Also, it should always be fun. If it's not at least a little bit fun, maybe the technique isn't for you. This is also an important skill to develop: To learn when to stick through a bout of frustration, and when to abandon something.
There is a very steep learning curve. But you can and you will get there. I believe in you, and I also believe that what "looks bad" to you is perfectly fine.

Janus has a frog plushie and Patton has a snake plushie. I’d say it’s for a moceit reason but it’s actually because the Creativitwins mixed up Janus’ and Patton’s Christmas gifts one year and they just never questioned it.

eat three frogs
12/18/24
Today, I asked my thesis advisor a question that’s been weighing on me:
“Do you think I can realistically finish by May?”
His answer was simple: “You can.”
But that answer came with a caveat—it won’t happen without sacrifice and a shift in how I approach my work. He shared that it took him a year to finish writing his dissertation. And the best advice he received from his advisor was simple: write a paragraph a day. Some days, that meant writing a single sentence. Other days, it meant scrapping everything and starting over. But the point was to show up and keep going.
Then came the curveball: "You need to eat three frogs before breakfast."
At first, I was confused. Was that even a thing? He quickly realized he’d mixed up the phrase and meant "eat the frog," a productivity mantra about tackling your hardest task first thing in the morning. We had a good laugh, but it stuck.
He shared how his advisor would start work at 3 AM to write in absolute quiet, while he preferred working late into the night, sometimes until midnight to chip away at his dissertation. The approach doesn’t matter; what matters is finding focused time to write.
“Eating three frogs” now means to me getting laser-focused and just writing, no matter how imperfect or overwhelming it feels. There will be sacrifices—fewer distractions, stricter discipline, and a shift in priorities. It won’t be easy, but it’s doable.
I will defend my thesis by May 2025.

Guess who just made a whole bunch of mistakes in a row :'). Tried to fix it best I could but, this will definitely stay visible. I'm glad it's on the back so I can just wear jackets over it always but also, I'm really upset and crying about this.
