I love your chubby!reader x hobbits post!! if you’re open to poly, could you write something about reader x frodo x sam?? (all three of them in a relationship ;n; ) tysm!!!
Oh my God. This request opened something in my mind I didn't know existed. I'd be so glad to write this. Samfro is gonna be the death of me, they're so—
Frodo Baggins x Reader x Sam Gamgee
Everyone in the Shire, included yourself, knew that Mister Frodo Baggins, Mayor of Michel Delving and heir of Bag End, and Samwise Gamgee, had left for 13 months to Yavanna knows where and had returned to get married and live together. It was yet another weird thing that had come from the Baggins, but again that family had always had a penchant for strangeness.
They were indeed the most famous couple in this part of Eriador, but not because they were both gentlehobbits, mind you. The people of the Shire are most tolerant of these kind of unions and see intolerant Big Folk cultures as utter idiocy. No, what truly baffled the Shire-folk was that someone like Frodo Baggins had decided to marry someone from a lower class. And his own gardener, no less!
Now, you had had your eyes on Frodo ever since you were but mere fawns, both of you being raised in Brandy Hall and grown up together. However, nothing had ever truly come from it. Thinking he was just not interested in you, you decided to prioritise your friendship and move on. Frodo was still a comfortable company and you appreciated comforts like a good hobbit.
When Sam had started working at Bag End, however, your attraction went in a different direction. He was also a kind hobbit albeit a truly very shy one. He could barely look at you and string a few words together. Something inside you selfishly believed it was because of your presence, which emboldened you. What a joke, when you saw him and Frodo make out at Merry Brandybuck's birthday.
Some months after their wedding, on your own birthday party, should be noted, Frodo came up to you and gently asked if he could speak with you for a moment in a more private setting. The dance floor was not fit for a conversation, truly, unless you wished everyone to hear you shouting in the middle of it.
You furrowed your eyebrows as you walked to the place Frodo was leading you to. Sam was sitting in a table on his own, gripping a mug of ale, probably to still his trembling fingers, you noted with a hint of amusement.
"I'm sorry, what is it that you want to tell me? I thought this was private." "It is, but both Sam and I wanted to ask you the same thing. Is it not easier this way?"
You had to agree. Frodo was more often than not right, and sometimes his way of thinking about everything infuriated you. With a smile, Frodo moved to stand by Sam's side and put a hand on his shoulder, perhaps as some encouragement.
"We wished to confess that we both like you very much and if perhaps you would be willing to start a relationship with both of us?" The way he framed the confession as an inquiry betrayed his insecurity, but it made it the more honest.
Your head swam rapidly at his words. Both of them? With you? At the same time? "H-How would that work?" You mumbled like an idiot. "What do you mean?" Asked Frodo, leaning his head slightly to the side, like a puppy.
"I mean, is this gonna be like me with both of you at the same time, or do I have to spend time with each one, like, specific days of the week?" Sam murmured something in Frodo's ear that sounded defeated but the raven-haired hobbit simply smiled and shook his head. "We don't want you to feel pressured at all in this relationship should you agree. You can choose to spend as much time you want with either one of us, or all three of us together. And if you ever wanted to spend time on your own, well that would not be a problem."
What were you to do? The only two hobbits you had ever been attracted to were now here offering you to date them. It was not pity, no. They truly wished to be with you. There was not really any cons to it if you thought hard at it, so the only option was for you to agree. The sweet smile of Sam and the grin of Frodo assured you that you had chosen well.
From then on, the three of you had been living in Bag End, at first only in name, and then, after a small ceremony per your request, officially. Trios of hobbits were not met with animosity in the Shire, so your union was well received by everyone but some relatives of choice who had more than a few words to say, not that you cared the slightest bit.
The differences between Frodo and Sam were even more noticeable behind closed doors. Don't get me wrong, they were both very gentle lovers, yet Frodo hid a note of mischief and chaos that had surely been nurtured by a childhood spent with his young cousins Merry and Pippin. The two of you together, however, were almost enough for Sam to lose his temper, but he loved both of you too much to truly get angry.
Time with Frodo was spent pouring over maps and books. The childlike excitement in his face when you had expressed your wish to learn Sindarin from him had fueled you for the following weeks. You thought he was a very patient teacher, more than any others you had ever had, but he replied that you were an amazing student and that it was all through your own merit.
With Sam, you learn to garden, and when he catches you reading a book about plants, you shyly confess it is an attempt for you to understand him better. In a most unusual bold manner of his, he gives you a kiss that almost sweeps you off your feet.
When the three of you are together, however, it is when the true colours of your relationship shine through. Cuddling is a must, and whoever needs it most, will be nestled in the middle, sandwiched between the other two. The roster changes almost daily.
Eventually, you muster the courage to ask Frodo about his scars and missing finger, and how he did get them. He looks at you with his deep blue eyes and an unreadable expression on his face, but he soon shakes his head and smiles. That night is spent with all of you awake, as they tell you about their adventures on the other side of the world. You grow impossibly closer after that, it's truly a wonder.
Okay after writing this I'm gonna lie on the floor for a bit 💔 I think it's clear I would die for them. Also it's kinda insane how easily this request came out, like I wrote this in one go, no proofreading, no nothing. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

What soft love songs the Fellowship dedicate to you (and why) <3
In the mood to make myself cry, plus I’m in my ‘i was i wasn’t lonely’ phase of the night.
Pulled most of these from my notes app lmao, and i listened to each one while writing, I highly recommend giving them a listen!
GN! reader, mostly you/your used :) (Obviously some songs will involve specified gender, please correct as you need, and remember that these characters would absolutely make these changes as well)
GIF by legolasimagines
Frodo Baggins - Hopelessly Devoted to You - Olivia Newton-John (Grease)
He definitely has the distinct memory of the classic slow burn moment of “Oh. Oh.” happening, where he realises just how much he loves you. He knew he was head over heels, and he looks at you like you hung the moon. And if you sing it to him- UGH😩💙. IN LOVE, HE SHALL BE. He probably hums it a lot when doing work or writing. Of course, the lyrics are quite relatable to him. Frodo has this internal belief that the person/people he love/s can’t love him nearly the amount he adores them. He was willing to sit around and wait on you, in the hopes that you would see him in the same way. His brain knew he should just move on, but he couldn’t let go, and he’s glad he didn’t. He’s so devoted to simply loving you.
“Hold on to the end, and that’s what I intend to do. I’m hopelessly devoted to you~”
GIF by frodo-sam
(gotta appreciate that me looking up his name resulted in a bunch of po-tay-toes memes. anyway. back to the hcs)
Samwise Gamgee - Hello, Hello - Elton John ft Lady GaGa (Gnomeo & Juliet)
He’s a sucker for meet-cute stories, and would unironically love this movie, even setting aside this banger of a song. The moment he saw you, he felt captivated by your beauty, whether or not the meeting went well or if you fell on your face. The song is just so cheerful and wholesome. He probably told you that the song reminded him of you, and that sparked the romantic relationship. Every time this sequence plays he’ll just look at you (if/when you watch the movie). PLEASE SING THIS AS A DUET WITH HIM AAAA. (He isn’t Elton John, but his voice is lovely 🥰)
“Hello, hello (Hello, hello), my, my, my, what have we here?”
GIF by tossme
Peregrin Took - I’ll Be - Edwin McCain
Honestly it’s hard to explain this one. It’s just so soft and sweet and really describes how he feels about you. Also as the youngest and a, quoting Gandalf here, “fool of a Took!”, the line “and I’ll be, better when I’m older…” is just- MWAH. This song reminds me of him honestly. He is, as the song states, “your crying shoulder”, the “greatest fan of your life”. Everything about you takes his breath away. We all know he’s the best singer in the fellowship, and its just gorgeous to listen to him sing it, especially because he means every word. He also probably dedicated this to you early on in the relationship, and it was definitely your wedding song (if you got married).
“I’ll be, better when I’m older. I’ll be, the greatest fan of your life~”
GIF by thorinsbeard
(tumblr needs more Merry gifs istg-)
Meriadoc Brandybuck - Nothing - Bruno Major
Honestly you wouldn’t expect such a lowkey song for such a high energy guy, but he’s a sucker for lazy days and sweet moments. He’s, as he likes to say, ‘work-avoidant’, and just wants to spend all his time on you. He also finds the song easy to sing to you, so thats a plus. The lyrics just resonate with him, similar to my picks for Pippin and Frodo. He’s very competitive, but he honestly doesn’t mind losing to you. He pretends like romantic or soft movies don’t make him cry, even if they do. He gets the appeal of going out and drinking and laughing, but just staying at home with you just sounds so much nicer to him. Its all about the little things in life with him, the small moments, the laughs, and every ‘I love you’ that makes him feel lighter than air.
“Dumb conversations, we lose track of time. Have I told you lately? I’m grateful you’re mine~”
GIF by thefandomimagine
Aragorn - Dark Red - Steve Lacy
He knows how dangerous his work and life is, and he’s always had this fear of leaving you behind (hence the ‘something bad is ‘bout to happen to me’). He only sees you in his life, no matter who else is wanting for his attention, he’s so devoted to you. He only hopes that you’ll stay by his side and fight with him, and he’s not willing to give up on you. No, he refuses to give up when you are involved, and he fights so hard to keep you safe and protected. The song also is easy to mumble to you when he’s tired, and it’s soothing for him to listen to. It’s just a symbol of how much you mean in his life, and how he trusts you with his heart.
“Only you, babe, only you darlin’, only you~”
GIF by reactionimages
Legolas - Lover - Taylor Swift
Unabashed Swiftie in general, but this song just hits different. So first off he probably already called you his lover, and when he found the song he thought it was perfect. I can definitely see him learning guitar and playing this song for you as well. Into the actual song analysis, this song frames his want to be close to you, the mysterious way he was drawn to you, the way he felt like time flew by whenever you talked. Also I feel like he’s made jealous relatively easily, and that’s also in the song. His heart has been borrowed before, but he’s glad he’s ended up with you, to hear your jokes, save you seats, and call you his lover. He definitely likes to sing this to you late in the night, and i can see him humming/mumbling it whenever the two of you just stand and hold each other. Its so wholesome, and he loves the way your eyes light up when he sings it with all the love in his heart, all of it for you.
“You’re my, my, my, my… lover~”
GIF by tlotrgifs
Gimli - If You Love Her - Forrest Blakk
Honestly, he’s not a very observant dwarf, but he does pay attention to you. He knows you, and he cares a lot. Protective of you to a fault, but just wants everyone to know that they shouldn’t take you or your heart for granted. He hates to admit it, but he thinks you are precious (I’M SORRy-) and every small thing about you is worth taking note of. And he does, so he knows exactly how to make you happier. He’s your personal hype-man, and truly believes that you are the best thing he has ever had. He uses the song as a guidebook on how to treat you, and while he won’t say it, or sing it, he does play this song for you and leave in a huff, just hoping you’ll know this song is meant to say that he loves you. (He might even dub it over with your preferred pronouns for the big reveal, and it’s quite funny)
“They’ll love you, if you love them like that~”
GIF by myrkvidrs
Boromir - Summer Love - The Workday Release
Boromir really thinks this song demonstrates his feelings towards you, and how he wishes you’d stick around with him. You remind him of the summer, warm, bright and hopeful. It was so simple for him to fall in love (it’s like counting 1,2,3). He’s awestruck by your beauty, and doesn’t find it enough to dream about you, he needs to be holding your hand, feeling your presence. He wants to face the world with you there next to him. You always manage to give him a smile, make sense to him, and be honest. He’s not sure how to articulate everything he feels around you, so he just says that he loves you.
“Surely this is love, this is love, this is summer love~”
WOOOOO IM DONEEEE
Ive been writing for the past 2+ hours and it’s late and I’m tired, but I really hope you enjoy. If you want to request a fic, any fandom will do, I’ll get back to you on it, I promise.
Let me know if you want me to do a Part 2 with some other characters <3 Have a great day!!

Patchwork Hearts
It was about dang time I wrote a Lord of the Rings fic. It's a shortie but it's a start. Inspired by this post by @idontknowhowtoplayguitar
Ao3 link below, and the entire thing is ever more below!
Patchwork hearts (556 words) by Librivore42
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types, The Hobbit - All Media Types
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf (Tolkien)
Additional Tags: i love them your honour, they're the kind of friends who snipe at each other one day, and sit and smoke on the porch the next
Summary:
Bilbo, ever the adventurer, has had a life full of living and of love. A short rumination on adventure, life, and the memories we keep of our friends.
~~~~~~~
The patches were a distinctly hobbitish thing, homely and warm with that communal sense of hail-fellow-well-met that was prevalent in the nicer parts of the Shire. Which was to say, parts that did not contain the Sackville-Bagginses. Bilbo had collected many on his long adventures, politely requested from amused elves, dwarves and every stripe of man in his most official and businesslike manner, as one would request a personal and most valued favour.
The old clothes were left behind as the patches migrated from suit to suit, and he wondered if someday he might have a suit that was all patches. Wouldn’t that be such a fine thing! A tribute to a life long and broad and most well-lived. A map of all his adventures.
And Frodo’s. He’d been most honoured to request a further patch from him before he left Rivendell, and one after. The suit had, by now, been set aside most carefully so that it would not wear, taken out only for the most special of occasions. By now he had as many patches, nearly, as he had stories, yet not nearly as many as he had room for fondness in his heart.
He had never yet asked one of Gandalf. A strange embarrassment came over him at the very thought of it. Perhaps the wizard would give him one when he wished.
At Bag End Gandalf and Bilbo had parted… not coldly, never that, but the shadow of the Ring had passed a chill over them that had sent both shivering even as Bilbo had stepped out the door. Gandalf had known, then, that he would see him again. But as they went to part again at the Last Homely House in Rivendell, he was no longer entirely sure.
And so as Gandalf set off at the head of the Fellowship, determined to lead them for as far as he was able, it being his turn to leave the other standing on the doorstep, as it were, he left Bilbo with a small scrap from one of his more worn travel cloaks.
On their final journey together, as the old Hobbit was helped into the boat with much the same grumbling as he’d done when he’d been forced out of his comfortable hole at the beginning of all his adventures, Gandalf’s impressive eyebrows rose at the much-beloved, much-patched suit.
He was not surprised. The careful storage had kept the clothing in very good order, and patches, especially sentimental ones that were not holding together the already well-trodden paths of an old suit, would of course last. So he was not, indeed, surprised. Gratified was the word, to see the fabric of his cloak on Bilbo’s shoulder, a shoulder he had often grasped to give solace, to guide, and perhaps give many an unwelcome push.
A special occasion this was indeed. He did not smile as he sat across from Bilbo, but his eyes had a deep warmth behind their usual sharp fire, and the old Hobbit gave him a beam that creased his entire face into a map of a life most well-lived.
“Well Gandalf?”
“The road goes ever on and on, doesn’t it?”
The solemn casting off of the boat was shot through with warm, hobbitish laughter that rang out over the water.
“It does indeed, old friend. It does indeed.”
Emerald Green - Frodo Baggins X GN Reader
Title: Emerald Green
Frodo Baggins X GN Reader
Additional Characters: N/A
Requested by: @almost-gabrielle! (I'm sorry it's a bit short!)
WC: 936
Warnings: Fluff
The beautiful green forests in Hobbiton were always so peaceful. The sun shone bright and the trees seemed to dance in the wind. It was a nice day to be outside. You held a woven basket in your hands, filled to the brim with berries and flowers. A breeze blew through your hair as you walked down an old dirt path. It was a lovely day. And finally, the Hobbit that you were looking for, you found him. Sitting under the base of a tree, reading a book. He looked so angelic, so ethereal.
“Frodo Baggins! I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” You exclaimed, walking towards him. Frodo didn't even flinch, looking up from a book.
"Y/N," He smiled as you walked over, "You've been looking for me?" He asked as you sat down beside him, placing your basket down between the both of you.
You inhaled a large breath of the morning air, letting out a sigh. Looking over at Frodo, you leaned over slightly to see what he was reading. "What is it that you are reading, Fro, dear?" You asked. His eyes met yours, and his lips formed into a small smile.
He placed his book back down on his lap, covering it with his hands, and for some reason, he looked rather nervous, "I doubt that you would be interested in it."
You hummed, nodding your head as you looked at the basket of berries. "Are you alright, Frodo?" You asked, concerned. Frodo's expression became more panicked. He shook his head frantically, not meeting your gaze. You grabbed his hand, holding it tightly. This action seemed to calm him a little bit. You squeezed his hand reassuringly. "Frodo... Whatever it is, you can tell me." You encouraged him. He stared at you for a moment before speaking up again.
He took a deep breath before beginning, "I was..." He paused again, seeming unsure if he wanted to continue.
After a few moments, you gave him a gentle nudge. "It'll be okay, Frodo," You said, smiling reassuringly.
He nodded slowly before continuing. "I was wondering... If you'd like to take a walk with me."
Your eyes widened slightly, a bit shocked as you felt your cheeks burn, "A walk?"
Frodo nodded, "I, uh, yes." He answered, before grabbing the book that he was reading from his lap. "I got this for you." He offered it out to you. Your face warmed up even further when you realized that he had gotten you one of your favorite books.
"So that's why you hid the book away." You chuckled, accepting it from him. You turned it over in your hands, the cover was an emerald green, the pages a cream. It was one of your favorite books that you had lost a long time ago. Before you moved to Hobbiton. You had told Frodo about it so many times, it must have been seared into his mind. "Thank you..." You muttered, looking over at Frodo; seeing his blushing cheeks. "I will treasure this book always. And, I'd love to take a walk with you, Frodo, dear." You added.
Standing, Frodo cleared his throat, offering his hand out to you. "My dear," He spoke, "Shall we go for a walk together?" You laughed lightly, taking his hand.
"Of course!" You replied, grinning widely, grabbing your basket. Together, you began your journey, hand in hand. You talked about random things; food, music. Eventually, a comfortable silence settled upon the two of you. A comfortable quietness that made you feel at home. The leaves rustling in the breeze, the soft sounds of animals making their noises, and the sun's gentle warmth as it began to set. It was peaceful. And the two of you shared it. It was just the two of you, enjoying each other's company - whilst also snacking on the fresh berries that you had previously collected.
As you and Frodo continued your walk through the serene Hobbiton landscape, you stumbled upon a beautiful patch of wildflowers. With a twinkle in your eyes, you both decided to take a break and make flower crowns for each other. Frodo's nimble fingers weaved together a lovely crown for you, adorned with vibrant blooms, while you fashioned one for him, your laughter filling the air as you both got caught up in the moment.
After adorning each other with the flower crowns, Frodo suddenly leaped up, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "A game of chase, perhaps?" You suggested, and a playful grin spread across his face. And just like that, the two of you were off, darting through the meadow, giggling like carefree children.
As the game of chase came to an end, you found yourselves back on the path, breathless and exhilarated. Frodo caught your hand, twirling you around in a dance-like spin, the setting sun casting a golden glow around the two of you. Amid your laughter and the gentle twirl, it became apparent that the walks in Hobbit culture held a deeper meaning - a sign of courtship. A sign that love was in the air. And you knew it was true. You had always had a certain fondness for Frodo, it was only a matter of time.
And the warmth of Frodo's hand in yours, the joy in his eyes, and the shared moments of happiness, laughter, and overall connection created a bond that transcended words. And as you continued your walk, hand in hand, it felt like the beginning of a beautiful journey together. A journey of a lifetime.
Who knew what was in store for the both of you in the future.
Fantastic capture of this incredibly immersive and beautiful production. there is a bar in the bottom right corner of the screen that doesn't take away except for one moment where Gandalf and Frodo are talking on the stairs in act one, but overall I worked around it and you can always see Frodo and sometimes Gandalf. At points people are in the audience and I wasn't able to capture them but you can always hear them and I do my best to always try to make sure to capture anything in the audience that I could. Some washout and shakiness throughout.
For the bagginshield prompt. Thorin helping Bilbo set up his birthday?
No pressure ofc
Sweet!
Happy Birthday Bilbo!🎊
Thorin and the rest of the dwarves were very surprised when Bilbo casually mentioned his birthday one day.
“Birthday? When? Why didn’t you tell us?”
“It never came up, also it’s only a day.”
Thorin of course couldn’t except this.
So he made sure everyone, including the Company, made Bilbo’s birthday the most celebrated ever in Erebor.
When the people of Erebor knew…let’s just say they needed more than one carriage to bring all the gifts and well wishes inside the castle.
“Honestly Thorin, a hobbit’s birthday is when the hobbit gives away gifts, not the other way around!”
Thorin only smirked, as just wait till Bilbo receives his gift to him 😏.
Bilbo was dressed in a blue-green outfit that Thorin couldn’t get enough of, especially when off.
So for most of the day, Bilbo sat on the throne (it was either that or on Thorin’s lap…and Bilbo wouldn’t like said image to be the talk of Erebor thank you.) while many from all over Middle Earth came to give him gifts and well wishes.
Gandalf of course brought fireworks and other magical tricks.
Fili and Kili may or may not have tried to snag a firework (and failed).
Bilbo also got letters from his cousin Drogo and nephew Frodo from the Shire (who all lived in Bag End and no Frodo’s parents don’t die).
Lobelia also sent a letter, which might of made Thorin this close to marching an army to the Shire if Bilbo didn’t laugh at such ridiculous threats.
“Happens every year Thorin. It’s practically useless considering she and no Sackville-Baggins will ever get my parents home. And no you can’t threaten a sword back at her in retaliation.”
Overall, Bilbo had an amazing birthday.
And an even better post birthday party celebration elsewhere ~ 😏😏
So how did my first time writing LOTR work out?
The Fellowships’ Various Reactions!
“I’ll finish what you start!” PT2
A/N: for @liamwinters
Frodo Baggins: Frodo, being a gentle and peace-loving hobbit, appreciates Y/n's philosophy of avoiding conflict. He admires their ability to defend themselves when necessary but hopes that peaceful resolutions can be found without resorting to violence.
Samwise Gamgee: Sam is loyal to Frodo and shares his values. He respects Y/n's approach and believes in their ability to protect themselves and their friends when required. Sam would likely offer support and encouragement to Y/n in their peaceful but assertive stance.
Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took: Merry and Pippin, being mischievous hobbits, might find Y/n's philosophy interesting but would likely enjoy a good fight themselves. They might tease Y/n good-naturedly about their preference for avoiding conflict but would ultimately respect their choice.
Aragorn: As a seasoned warrior and leader, Aragorn understands the importance of self-defense. He appreciates Y/n's determination to protect themselves and their loved ones. Aragorn would likely view Y/n's stance as a valuable asset to the Fellowship, particularly in situations where negotiations fail and battles become inevitable.
Legolas: Legolas, being an elf known for his exceptional archery skills, values harmony and peace. He would respect Y/n's belief in avoiding conflict and likely admire their ability to stand up for themselves when necessary. Legolas might also appreciate Y/n's potential to find alternative solutions to conflicts.
Gimli: Gimli, a proud dwarf warrior, might initially be skeptical of Y/n's aversion to conflict. However, he would also recognize the importance of strategic thinking and the value of having someone skilled in both diplomacy and self-defense. Over time, Gimli would likely come to respect Y/n's approach.
Gandalf: Gandalf, the wise and powerful wizard, understands the complexities of conflict and the importance of self-defense. He would appreciate Y/n's philosophy of avoiding unnecessary violence and relying on their abilities to defend themselves when pushed to their limits. Gandalf would likely encourage Y/n to find a balance between peace and self-preservation.
Boromir: Boromir, a brave but flawed warrior, might view Y/n's philosophy with some skepticism. He is driven by the need to protect his people and might initially consider Y/n's reluctance to initiate conflict as a weakness. However, as he witnesses Y/n's ability to defend themselves when needed, Boromir could grow to respect their approach and see the value in their stance.
Overall: Each member of the Fellowship has their own unique perspectives and backgrounds, but ultimately, they would recognize the importance of Y/n's ability to defend themselves while still upholding their commitment to avoid unnecessary conflict. They would value Y/n's contribution to the Fellowship and appreciate the diverse set of skills and beliefs that each member brings to the group.
𝐘𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 || 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐱 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐎𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝
Summary: idk Yule something something something bro I don't know what to write it's just a bunch of fluff and tiny Frodo content
Word count: 2K
A/N: This was cross-posted on my ao3!
Dearest Thorin,
I regret to inform you I won’t be able to spend the winter months with you this year as much as I’d like to. Unfortunately, my dear cousins the Brandybuck-bagginses have passed in a terrible boating accident and as much as this time hurts for my family, they have asked that I may take in my cousin's only son, Frodo. Of course, I have agreed as is right to do. Poor lad lost both his parents in one day, I can only imagine what he’s going through right now.
Yavannah knows this is the last thing I’d ever want but I must take care of the boy for now. I hope you can understand. Perhaps I can visit in the summertime, I’m sure Frodo would love to see Erebor someday.
Your burglar,
Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo looked down sadly at the sealed envelope in his hands. He’d been looking extremely forward to spending Yule with Thorin. Yet that was all a distant thought now, He has a boy to look after. Frodo sat next to him, only nine years old and inexplicably quiet. Bilbo had given him one of his books he’d picked up on his journey to the lonely mountain. Some sort of elvish novel filled with fantastical fairy tales and stories of yore.
When Frodo had been younger he’d used to jump for joy when Uncle Bilbo came bearing gifts of books to family gatherings, now he sat staring at the same page for the past fifteen minutes his face emotionless and his eyes distant.
Bilbo sighed and ran a hand through his curly hair, turning his attention back to the letter in his hand.
“I’ll be right back, Frodo.” He said, giving the boy the biggest smile he could muster at the moment.
Frodo blinked in response, not even turning to look Bilbo in the eye.
The hobbit pursed his lips and tucked the envelope into his waistcoat pocket.
It was snowing hard outside and the windows of Bag-end rattled with the force of the wind. It was a true blizzard in the making. Hopefully, the bird would be able to make it to Thorin.
Barely half a month had passed since Bilbo sent his letter. Frodo seemed to return slightly to his younger self. He’d begun asking Bilbo questions about his journeys once more, the young hobbit would stop in the hallways of Bag-end and pester Bilbo until he told him the story behind the map hanging on the wall or the set or dwarven battle armor sitting in the corner, long forgotten.
They sat together at the dinner table two bowls of beef stew lay untouched before them, it was getting late.
“Don’t you want your soup Frodo?” Asked Bilbo. “It’s one of your favorites.” He encouraged, attempting to get his picky-eater of a nephew to eat.
Frodo scowled, poking at the meat in his stew with his fork.
Their silence was broken by the loud noise of Bilbo’s bell signaling there was someone at the door. Bilbo cleared his throat and sat up from his seat.
The elder hobbit walked gingerly to the front of Bag-end, wondering who in their right mind would be pestering a hobbit this late during supper of all times.
Decades ago the last time his bell had rung at this hour he’d become an unwilling party member on a long and quite bothersome adventure.
Bilbo threw open the door to reveal a quite serious-looking dwarf. Yet that was not the source of his surprise (He quite expected this to happen if Bilbo was being truthful, he had a tendency to attract unwanted visitors) What really shocked the hobbit was that the dwarf was none other than Thorin Oakenshield himself.
“Thorin?” He gaped, staring wide-eyed at the dwarrow in front of him. “Wha? Huh?”
“Where’s the little pebble, hm?” Asked Thorin a serious glint in his eye, trying to peer past Bilbo’s shoulder into the den.
“pebble?” Asked Bilbo still trying to work out why Thorin was here in the first place. He raised his hands to back peddle their conversation. “Hold on- aren’t you supposed to be at Erebor?”
Thorin waved his hand dismissively. “Fili’s got it under control, it’ll be a good experience for him.”
“Good experience? Thorin, that's an entire kingdom to run by himself!” Exclaimed Bilbo, flabbergasted at the dwarf’s carelessness.
“And he has Balin to take care of him, he’ll be fine,” explained Thorin, putting a hand on Bilbo’s shoulder. “Besides, you need more help than him right now.”
“I don’t think that's a very even comparison.” Laughed Bilbo, looking at Thorin as if he’d just magically turned into a monkey. “Look, come inside, I don’t want you catching a cold out in the snow.” The hobbit sighed, opening the door further for the dwarven king to enter.
Thorin shook the snow off his thick fur coat and turned to Bilbo, giving the other a stern look.
“It may not seem like that hard of an ordeal Bilbo but raising a child is no laughing matter.” He tsked. “When my brother-in-law died I helped Dis out with the boys every day, I essentially became like their father. I know what child-rearing is like.”
“So you’ve come all this way to help me?” Asked Bilbo, looking Thorin up and down curiously. “Not to mention how fast you got here, I didn’t even know it was possible to travel from Erebor to the Shire in less than a month.”
Thorin's face turned red, he looked everywhere but Bilbo’s eyes, muttering something unintelligible.
“What was that?” Asked Bilbo, a smile pulling at his lips.
“I also may have wanted to spend Yule with you,” Thorin grumbled, his voice deep and gravely, like a bear.
Bilbo grinned at Thorin, the tips of his pointed ears turning red.
“Uncle Bilbo, why is there a dwarf in our parlor?” Came Frodo's voice from the doorway, his curly head peeking out from the corner.
Bilbo opened his mouth to speak but Thorin beat him to the chase.
“You must be Frodo.” He smiled, wrapping his arm around Bilbo’s shoulder and pulling him close to the dwarf’s side.
Bilbo coughed, clearing his throat, denying the feeling of warmth that spread throughout his body at Thorin's touch.
“Frodo, you recall Thorin from my adventures, hm?” He asked, waving a careless hand in the general direction of the dwarf.
The younger hobbit's pointed ears perked up and he stared up at Thorin in awe. “The king under the mountain?” Frodo exclaimed in astonishment.
“At your service,” Thorin replied, a soft smile spreading across his face.
Frodo’s excitement was basically tangible, he was practically bouncing off the walls as he ran up to Thorin, the young hobbit twiddling his fingers in nervousness.
“Did you really fight a dragon?” He asked in amazement, looking up at Thorin as if he’d saved his life instead of Bilbo’s.
Thorin was about to answer when Bilbo cut him off.
“Good little hobbits finish their dinner first, you can bombard him with all your questions after you finish your stew.”
Frodo grumbled, frowning hard as he glanced back at Thorin.
“You know…” Said Thorin looking around the room as if he was afraid someone would overhear him. “I brought all these toys from Erebor… But I was strictly told by my advisors to only give them to shirelings who finish their suppers.” He glanced at Bilbo, shooting him a small smile.
Bilbo rolled his eyes in obvious annoyance, yet his smile told another story.
Frodo gasped, looking back and forth between Bilbo and Thorin before making a mad dash for the dining room, determined to eat all his soup.
“How about I show you around a bit? Before the little devil inhales his stew I mean…” Added Bilbo, his eyes still on the doorway Frodo had just sped through. “It's been quite a while since you last visited… Four years if I remember correctly.”
“Four years far too long.” Sighed Thorin, pulling Bilbo even closer to his side. “If I had my way I’d visit you every year.”
“You have a kingdom to run.” Rationalized Bilbo. “Besides, it takes three months to travel from Erebor to the Shire… Usually.” He continued glancing up at Thorin.
The dwarf met him with an exasperated shrug.
“I would like that tour, however,” Thorin added as an afterthought, looping his and Bilbo’s arms together. “Show me where I’ll be sleeping, hm?”
“I see you’ve gotten a lot more books in your study since I last visited.” Observed Thorin as Bilbo led him into his office.
“Elrond half-elven gave me them as gifts since I’ve learned to speak Sindarin and Quenya. told me they’d help expand my knowledge.” Bilbo smiled, patting Thorin’s arm which was still entangled in his.
Thorin scoffed, rolling his eyes. “Damn elves, next thing you know they’ll be coming to Bag-end to join us for Yule.”
“They might as well.” Added Bilbo smugly. “I’m told we bagginses are quite good at making foreign friends.”
Thorin rolled his eyes playfully at the hobbit's remark as Bilbo continued. The hobbit led Thorin through a circular door into his bed chambers.
Bilbo’s room hadn’t changed much since the four years of Thorin’s absence. A new quilt sat neatly on top of his bed, illustrating the shire and its surplus gardens. On the hobbit's nightstand was an assortment of parenting books stacked to reach a combined height of an average elf. One of Bilbo’s coats (An extremely well-made dwarven garment) sat draped over a cushioned armchair that hadn’t been there previously. Thorin had given the coat to Bilbo as a Yule present eight years ago, part of him melted seeing it displayed.
“I assume you’ll be staying here with me…” Bilbo dawdled on, looking anywhere but Thorin, the tips of his ears turning red. “That is- if you want to.” He added hurriedly.
Thorin nodded his head furiously.
“I want to.”
Bilbo smiled sheepishly, tugging nervously at his copper curls.
A silence fell between them and Thorin faltered, grabbing Bilbo’s hand.
“We need to talk, my burglar.”
Bilbo stared back at the dwarven king, his smile hesitating.
“I agree.”
Bilbo busied himself by straightening invisible wrinkles on his bed sheets and sat down with Thorin next to him. The hobbit sighed, he’d had a feeling they’d be having this discussion one way or another.
An uncomfortable silence filled the air with thick tension. Thorin was the first to speak.
“Our original plan isn’t going to work now, isn’t it?” He asked, rubbing his thumb over Bilbo’s knuckles, making the hobbit's face flush and his ears ring.
“I suppose Frodo does change some things…” Replied Bilbo, his gaze finding the ground much more interesting than Thorin at the moment.
“Do…” Thorin faltered. “Do you wish to end our courtship?”
Bilbo didn't waste a second to respond, his eyes darting up to Thorins within milliseconds.
“No! Not at all! I still want to marry you, Thorin!” He exclaimed, anxiety filling his stomach. “It’s just, a lot changed with the addition of Frodo…” Bilbo pursed his lips.
“We… Just need time to figure it out.” He sighed, turning to smile slightly at Thorin. “I swear I’ll never leave you. No matter what.”
“I as well my burglar.” Thorin sighed contentedly, happy with the conclusion of their discussion as he cupped Bilbo’s face with his rough hand. “Aulë I love you.”
They sat there for what felt like eons to both of them but was most likely a matter of a few fleeting moments. Both content to be held in each other's arms.
“Did you actually bring dwarvish toys?” Whispered Bilbo, almost unbelieving. He shifted in the dwarf’s arms, breaking the dramatic tension that had filled the air almost suffocatingly with their discussion.
Thorin pulled away from their embrace and opened the pockets of his big coat, revealing a plethora of small (most likely enchanted) children’s toys, ranging from tops to stuffed animals, and dominos.
“Don’t worry.” He smirked. “I’m planning to make his Yule present myself.”
Bilbo knew Thorin and Bilbo knew the dwarf was most likely to make something that would get Frodo in lots of trouble with their ever-nosy neighbors.
“It better not be any hopefully safe and small Dwarven battle gear.” He scolded, looking the dwarf king in the eye.
“How did you guess?” Asked Thorin with a devious smirk.
“I had my suspicions.” Bilbo’s annoyance did not last as he laughed shortly, rolling his eyes and returning to Thorin's arms.
The dwarven king brought his attention to the small trinkets in his pocket. “They were my nephews' favorite nick-nacks growing up. Now that they don’t need them I thought they could be put to good use again.” He explained shyly.
“That’s an excellent idea Thorin.” Sighed Bilbo contentedly, restraining himself from burrowing deeper into the dwarf’s warm chest. It’d been what felt like decades since he was last able to embrace Thorin like he was currently.
A harsh knock came from the door to Bilbo’s bedroom, interrupting their moment.
“Uncle Bilbo, I've finished my soup!” Rang Frodo’s voice from behind the door. “Is Mr. Thorin in there?”
Bilbo gave Thorin a knowing look as he got up from his arms to answer the door, readjusting his wrinkled clothing as he did so.
“All of it?” He asked the little hobbit, raising a suspicious eyebrow.
Frodo nodded violently, his eyes looking expectantly behind him to the dwarf still sitting on Bilbo’s bed.
“Alright- But if you’re lying so help me Yavannah…” The hobbit sighed, opening the door further for Frodo to dash in, running straight to Thorin.
Bilbo had a feeling this was going to be the best Yule yet.
I love them (༎ຶ⌑༎ຶ)
Inspiration Saturday
Tagged by the lovely @prince-buck-diaz and @spotsandsocks
Okay, so I made myself very sad with this one, so I hope you’ll join me in crying. This is the inspiration:
And here’s what it inspired:
Hope you enjoyed it!
Tagging in the hopes they’ll share their own (obviously no pressure): @wikiangela @wildlife4life @alyxmastershipper @try-set-me-on-fire and anyone else inspired!
Gif 1 & 2: Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King film saying ‘Don’t leave me here alone, don’t go where I can’t follow you’ to Frodo Baggins (off screen) while crying. Photo 1: Three tiered collage. The first tier is Buck in a hospital bed with a breathing tube. There is text on the bottom saying ‘Don’t leave me here alone’. The second tier is a gravestone that says ‘Evan Buckley, 1991-2023, Here lies a brother, friend and son. Gone but never forgotten’. The third tier is Eddie Diaz crying with the text on the bottom of the image saying ‘Don’t go where I can’t follow you’. Photo 2: Photo of text: Eddie simultaneously stands next to an occupied hospital bed and a freshly dug grave. Can feel tears on his cheeks but doesn’t know in what reality he’s crying, maybe it’s both. In the hospital room, they wait for a breath that never comes, as a heartbeat flatlines. At the grave, he watches as dirt fills the hole, unable to say goodbye. He’s fractured, split into two, left a part of himself in that hospital room with his lifeless body, then into three, left another part of himself to crawl into the grave next to him. The last part forced to go on. “Don’t leave me here alone…Don’t go where I can’t follow” The words are said by all parts of himself, across time, to someone who can no longer listen. They are whispered to a white room and cold skin, sobbed to a grey stone craved with his name and yelled into the darkening night at a universe that used to scream. “don’t leave me here alone, Buck, don’t go where I can’t follow you.” “please, please don’t leave me don’t go please” “You left, you went where I can’t follow.”
The Lord of the Rings
[image of the front cover of the lord of the rings book, the image is from the lord of the rings book Wikipedia article, a link to this article can be found in the reference section of this blog post]
What is The lord of the Rings about?
At its heart, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is about the epic battle between good and evil. It's set in the mythical world of Middle-earth, filled with diverse races such as hobbits, elves, dwarves, and men. The story revolves around a magical artifact called the One Ring, which was created by the Dark Lord Sauron to dominate the world.
The main plot follows Frodo Baggins, a humble hobbit, who is entrusted with the dangerous quest to destroy the ring by casting it into the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Along the way, he is joined by a group of allies, forming the Fellowship of the Ring. The journey is fraught with peril, as they face Sauron's forces and grapple with the corruptive influence of the ring itself.
Beyond the adventure, The Lord of the Rings explores themes like friendship, sacrifice, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit against overwhelming darkness. It's a tale of epic battles, intimate struggles, and enduring courage. What part of the story are you most drawn to? Or perhaps the movies are more your thing?
What are the main themes in The Lord of the Rings?
The Lord of the Rings is rich with themes that resonate across cultures and generations. Some of its main themes include:
Friendship and Fellowship: The bond between Frodo and Sam, as well as the diverse members of the Fellowship, highlights the importance of unity, trust, and loyalty in overcoming challenges.
Power and Corruption: The One Ring represents the seductive and destructive nature of absolute power. Characters like Gollum, Boromir, and even Frodo struggle with its influence.
Sacrifice and Heroism: Many characters, from Aragorn to Gandalf, make sacrifices for the greater good, showcasing bravery and selflessness.
Hope and Resilience: In the face of overwhelming evil and despair, the story emphasizes the importance of holding on to hope and persevering against the odds.
Nature vs. Industrialization: Middle-earth's pastoral beauty contrasts with the destructive machinery and factories of Saruman and Sauron's armies, reflecting Tolkien's concerns about environmental degradation.
Each theme weaves together to create a timeless tale with profound moral and philosophical depth. Which theme resonates most with you?
How do these themes apply to modern society?
The themes in The Lord of the Rings echo powerfully in modern society, offering insights and lessons that remain relevant:
Friendship and Fellowship: In an increasingly interconnected world, collaboration and mutual support across cultural, societal, and economic divides are vital to tackling global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and inequality. The story reminds us that unity is strength.
Power and Corruption: The One Ring serves as a cautionary tale about unchecked power. This applies to modern contexts such as corporate greed, political corruption, and the ethical dilemmas surrounding emerging technologies like AI and surveillance. It highlights the need for responsible leadership and integrity.
Sacrifice and Heroism: Acts of sacrifice can be seen in the efforts of healthcare workers, activists, and volunteers who dedicate their lives to the betterment of society. Heroism today often comes in quiet, uncelebrated forms, much like Frodo's humble journey.
Hope and Resilience: Whether facing personal struggles, social injustices, or natural disasters, humanity's ability to persevere and remain hopeful mirrors the resilience seen in Middle-earth. This theme inspires us to keep striving for a better future despite adversity.
Nature vs. Industrialization: Tolkien’s critique of environmental degradation feels particularly urgent today. The destruction of Middle-earth’s natural beauty parallels modern issues like deforestation, pollution, and urban sprawl, reminding us to prioritize sustainability.
Can we explore the theme of power and corruption more?
The theme of power and corruption in The Lord of the Rings is a central thread that resonates deeply. The One Ring itself is a symbol of absolute power, and its allure reveals the vulnerabilities in even the noblest of characters. Let’s delve into how Tolkien unpacks this theme:
The Nature of Power: The ring's power lies not just in its ability to dominate others, but in its capacity to corrupt its bearer. Even well-intentioned characters like Frodo, Gandalf, and Galadriel are tempted by it, showing that no one is immune to the seduction of power. This highlights how absolute power can distort even the purest motives.
Corruption and Moral Decline: Characters like Gollum and Saruman demonstrate how the pursuit of power leads to moral decay. Gollum's obsession with the ring transforms him into a creature enslaved by his desires, while Saruman's betrayal of his principles for domination mirrors real-world instances where individuals or institutions forsake ethics for control.
Resistance to Power: On the flip side, characters like Aragorn and Sam exemplify the strength it takes to resist power’s pull. Their humility and dedication to a higher cause underscore Tolkien’s message that true strength lies in selflessness and integrity.
In today’s world, these reflections on power and corruption remain strikingly relevant. Whether in politics, business, or personal dynamics, the unchecked pursuit of power often leads to exploitation and inequality. It’s a reminder to hold leaders accountable and strive for systems that balance power equitably.
sillyyy game timeee
take your fav character (or favs, if you cant choose). What fictional universe would they be least prepared to handle if they were dropped into it and why? Explain you answer(s) as much or as little as you want o<o
Okay, step one, the fav(s) ... Dipper Pines and Norman Babcock? Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins? Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko? Yeah, why not, we'll go with all of them in those pairs. A cross-over ship (my OTP of OTPs), a canonical partnership for questing that I do ship, and a familial bond that's also mentor-student.
Step two, the fictional universe they would least be prepared to handle ... The universe of the Aliens franchise, probably, since the whole point of it is that *nobody* is really prepared to handle the xenomorphs.
Why are they unprepared to face it? Because it's a killzone either trapped aboard a spaceship or on a colonial installation implanted on an alien world. Everybody is being hunted by creatures that're immune to most forms of attack (thanks to a thick hide) and whose blood is literally so acidic it eats through metal in seconds. The setting is doubly claustrophobic, being stuck in dark, narrow corridors in an environment that is actively hostile (the cold vacuum of space, usually), and being trapped in an ultra-capitalist hellscape on top of that.
Much as I love these characters ... they dead.
Although the Firebenders might be able to fight xenomorphs off for a while (flamethrowers are effective weapons, and they've got practically magical reflexes and combat skills). The boys and the Hobbits might survive for a while by hiding and slipping into vents. Dipper and Norman being genre savvy might give them a slim chance to escape on a shuttle *maybe* (hopefully).
Thanks!
Character tropes are a writer's bread and butter, for better or worse. Because of this, it can be easy for your characters to be mistaken, copied, and boxed in with others. Especially in this industry, it's important to stand out. What’s the difference between a flat character and a well-rounded character? How do writers bring a character to life on the page? When it comes to character development, these are central questions—especially when it comes to using character tropes...
[ ~ a world that's waiting up for me ~ ]
What Are Character Tropes?
The word “trope” refers to a common motif or pattern in a work of art. In the context of fiction, character tropes refer to common attributes or even entire stock characters. The word trope comes from the Greek word 'tropos' meaning “to turn.” Originally it referred to rhetorical devices that a writer uses to develop an argument. Character tropes can be useful in fiction, but when overused, they can detract from a story.
Common Character Tropes
Every genre of storytelling has its own stable of common character types, and as a storyteller it’s worth being aware of them. Here are nine of the most common:
1. The chosen one:
The chosen one is a common fantasy trope. Their identity typically revolves around a task that’s been set aside for them, which they typically pursue without much hesitation or complication. Like Frodo Baggins, Luke Skywalker, and Harry Potter, the chosen one is often, conveniently, an orphan.
2. The damsel in distress:
One of the most common and pernicious types of female character tropes, the damsel in distress, whatever form she takes, is a passive figure who exists mostly as an object for the hero to save. Even versions of the character who turn out to be a little more plucky than expected (think Princess Fiona from Shrek or Princess Leia from Star Wars) have become their own subset of this creaky old trope.
3. The femme fatale:
A mysterious and seductive woman who uses her sex appeal to seduce and entrap her enemies, the femme fatale is a popular character trope in hardboiled mysteries. In many ways, the femme fatale is an updated version of supernatural witches or sorceresses. It’s no spoiler to say that she nearly always leads men to destruction. Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman, and Eartha Kitt are the queens of this trope. <3
4. The girl next door:
The small-town girl with a heart of gold is, in many ways the opposite of the femme fatale. A common film and TV trope, the girl next door is innocent, kind, and wholesome. In other words, she’s the embodiment of domestic femininity and typically a candidate for the male protagonist’s love interest. Take Mary Jane Watson for instance.
5. The mad scientist:
Going back to Dr. Frankenstein (or any number of sorcerer antecedents), the mad scientist is usually a villain, driven by an eccentric, antisocial personality and unrestrained hubris or a desire to play god. The mad scientist’s benign counterpart is the nerdy “absent-minded professor” who’s so engrossed by their work that they struggle to relate to “normal people.”
6. The trusty sidekick:
Like the damsel in distress, the trusty sidekick typically has no life outside their relationship to the main character and their quest. Whether the sidekick is a loyal companion, like Samwise in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, a faithful butler, or a chatty best friend—as in any number of romance novels—their main quality is that they have no story of their own.
7. The wise old man:
Sometimes an actual wizard, sometimes just an old guy who’s seen his share, the wise old man is a long-enduring stock figure who usually imparts some special wisdom to the protagonist. Dumbledore, Master Oogway, Gandalf, and Master Miyagi.
8. The dumb muscle:
Based on the idea that it’s impossible to be smart and fit at the same time, the dumb muscle is an exceedingly common minor character, especially in action and adventure stories. As a bad guy the dumb muscle is easily outsmarted or otherwise bested by the main character. X-Men's Juggernaut is a prime example.
9. The antihero:
Antiheroes are typically cynical loners with major personality flaws, often darkly appealing bad boys. Like normal heroes, the antihero still drives the story, but often to a more amoral place. Tony Soprano, Red Arrow, Emma Frost, and the grittier versions of Batman are all prime examples of modern antiheroes. These days, antiheroes are almost as common as idealized heroes.
5 Tips for Avoiding Character Tropes
Character tropes aren’t good or bad in and of themselves. In some types of fiction, especially epics, satires, and more plot-driven forms of fiction, the use of stock characters can be expected and even desirable. The problem is when writers lean so heavily on these tropes that they’re no longer telling an original story. This is the point where archetypal characters can bleed into stereotypes. In order to avoid (or at least complicate) character tropes, you’ll need to develop a richer sense of your characters. Here are a few tips:
1. Figure out what your characters really want.
One reason writers lean on stereotypes is because they don’t know their characters well enough. Instead of playing to type, spend some time figuring out what really motivates your characters. Are they driven by a need to belong? By a thirst for knowledge? By a desire to be recognized? These super-objectives may lead your characters to buck their outward roles in interesting ways.
2. Look for opportunities to subvert tropes.
If you find yourself drawn to certain tropes, look for ways to undermine them. While this sort of self-conscious style may not be right for every story, it can be especially compelling in the context of genres that traditionally rely on tropes: think fantasy novels, horror movies, love stories, westerns, and other popular genres.
3. Get to know your characters outside the story.
A common writing exercise is to develop backstories for your major characters. Imagine them in real life. Ask yourself questions about your characters, like: What was this person like in high school? What objects are on their nightstand? How do they get along with their families? While seemingly inconsequential, these questions can help you get a sense of the individuality of your characters, rather than just thinking of them as adhering to a common type.
4. Allow your characters’ personalities to change.
Again, there are types of stories where characters may remain static, but in general, it’s important for readers to feel like your character changes (or at least has the potential to change) over the course of the story. Remember, the change need not always be positive, but there should be some sense that the experience they’ve had has marked them in some way.
5. Avoid clichéd situations.
Sometimes the issue isn’t with the characters you’ve developed but the scenario in which you’ve placed them. If you’ve created a pair of star-crossed lovers who are meant to fall for one another at first sight, it’ll be hard not to make the situation feel hackneyed—no matter how well-drawn your lovers are. If you’re only thinking in terms of common plot tropes, it may be hard to get your characters out of them. If you’re working in a science fiction or fantasy setting, this is where worldbuilding might help you find more interesting angles to explore.
🧿 Why We Crave Chosen Ones: Psychological and Cultural Roots
The Enduring Appeal of Being “Chosen”
(Part 3 of 4: The Chosen One Project)
In a world often marked by uncertainty, chaos, and injustice, the idea that one individual could be destined to set things right is irresistibly comforting.
Despite its predictability -or perhaps because of it- the Chosen One trope endures. Across books, films, games, and myths, audiences return again and again to stories of heroes marked by fate.
But why?
What deeper psychological and cultural forces draw us to these narratives? And what happens when the fantasy of destiny begins to work against the stories themselves?
🌟 The Mythic Need for Meaning🌟
Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) argues that myths across cultures share a common structure because they address universal human needs: the need for purpose, transformation, and reconciliation with mortality.
The Chosen One, in this framework, becomes a vessel for hope.
Their journey reassures us that suffering has meaning, that trials lead to growth, and that the individual can triumph over chaos.
In an era increasingly shaped by disenchantment -the erosion of religious, communal, and mythic frameworks- the Chosen One offers a modern substitute for ancient sacred narratives. They provide a way for readers to experience transcendence through fiction.
When we read about a Chosen One, we are not merely entertained.
We are invited to believe, however briefly, that destiny itself has a plan.
🌟 Psychological Comfort in Narrative Coherence🌟
Beyond mythic resonance, the Chosen One also fulfils psychological needs for coherence and agency.
Research in narrative psychology suggests that individuals are drawn to stories that offer clear beginnings, middles, and endings.
Stories that affirm that actions have consequences and that lives have arc and meaning.
The Chosen One trope creates a powerful narrative coherence:
The world is broken.
A figure rises.
Change is inevitable.
In a reality often defined by randomness and systemic complexity, this structure provides catharsis.
It reassures readers that even in the face of overwhelming odds, individuals can matter -and that destiny can intervene when human will alone seems insufficient.
Especially for younger readers, narratives of exceptionalism offer a potent emotional anchor during periods of identity formation and uncertainty.
🌟 The Danger of Narcissistic Fantasy🌟
However, the same features that make the Chosen One trope comforting can also make it dangerously hollow.
As Anthony Rella critiques, the myth of the Chosen One can encourage a narcissistic fantasy: the belief that one’s mere existence, rather than one’s choices or efforts, guarantees significance.
When poorly handled, Chosen One narratives:
Strip agency from protagonists (they succeed because they must, not because they earn it).
Flatten character development (external destiny replaces internal growth).
Create unrealistic expectations in audiences about individuality and “specialness.”
In these cases, destiny becomes an excuse, not a challenge.
The hero succeeds because the narrative demands it -not because they struggled, learned, or sacrificed in meaningful ways.
Worse, when every hero is “chosen,” narratives risk implying that those who are not exceptional by birth or fate are simply irrelevant -an idea at odds with the humanistic ideals many of these stories aim to affirm.
🌟 A Tension Between Fate and Choice🌟
At its best, the Chosen One trope dramatizes the tension between fate and free will.
The most enduring Chosen Ones -from Frodo Baggins to Buffy Summers- are not defined by their prophecies alone.
They are defined by what they choose to do with their burden.
They remind us that destiny may open the door, but it is choice that walks through it.
This tension creates the emotional and philosophical stakes that elevate Chosen One narratives beyond mere wish-fulfilment.
As modern fantasy continues to evolve, this tension becomes even more crucial. Readers increasingly demand stories where characters shape their fates -not where fate shapes the characters.
Why Destiny Still Matters (Carefully)
The Chosen One endures because it offers us hope:
Hope that order can emerge from chaos.
Hope that meaning can arise from suffering.
Hope that individuals can still shape history, even when the world feels immovable.
But when destiny replaces agency, that hope turns hollow.
Understanding the psychological and cultural roots of the Chosen One prepares us to see where the trope can grow -and where it must be challenged.
febuwhump day 1: vocal chords
a/n: yes hello, I am attempting febuwhump! I may come back and edit these in a few months, but I hope you enjoy these first drafts of whatever I end up posting :)
Snowflakes fell heavily on growing snow-piles along the road to Hobbiton. Heather Brandybuck had hoped she would avoid the snowfall, but weather this time of year was unpredictable at best and surprising at worst. She was glad that she had brought her heaviest traveling cloak and fur-lined boots, however, she wished she had remembered her scarf and best winter hat. She trudged on.
The city limits were not too far away, and Heather would make it to her cousin's, Bilbo Baggins', smial within the day. She smiled at the thought of seeing Bilbo, and seeing how young Frodo was settling in with him. Heather also greatly looked forward to a warm house and a meal. The inns she had been staying at along her journey from Brandy Hall had been passable, but she longed for a proper home.
Heather paused her trudging, and looked around. Naked, wet trees popped up along the path and beyond posts fencing the road, and there wasn't another hobbit in sight. She was within the town limits now, and the snow on the road had been swept away by wheels and pony-traffic, leaving freezing mud and dirty snow-piles instead. She continued on.
It was past noon when Bag End came into view. Warm light poured out from the windows, and smoke puffed up through the chimney, disrupting the cloudy, wet-cold canvas of the surroundings. Heather huffed a smile, and ran her mittened hands along her face and arms to attempt some warmth. Her nose had started running, so she wiped that away with a hand-kerchief, and brushed away accumulating snow on her person. Heather was almost there!
In her excitement, she quickened her pace. Heather carefully made her way uphill along the hobbit-holes, and through the gate that signaled the start of Bilbo's property. She was so giddy, for warmth and family, that she didn't notice a slippery patch of ice on the stone steps leading up to Bilbo's front door. Her foot slid against the ice, and with a shout, she toppled backward into a bunch of snow off to the side of the steps.
Heather started shivering immediately. The snow soaked through her already-cold clothes and her boots could no longer keep out cool moisture. She urged herself up into a sitting position, when the front door to Bag End opened.
"Heather!" A jolly voice said, and then; "Oh dear me," followed by the sound of pattering footsteps inside.
Heather got herself to standing, still shaking, and continued up the steps more carefully. Bible met her half way, a blanket around his shoulders that he opened up to bring Heather into.
"Come in now, I've got you."
Once the door closed and Heather's outer layers and boots removed, Bilbo brought her in for a proper hug. "Heatherica Brandybuck, how good to see you!"
"A-and you, Cousin Bilbo," she responded, returning the very warm hug.
Bilbo grasped her shoulders, and gently scolded, "I wouldn't have minded waiting longer, you know. You shouldn't have traveled in such harsh weather, nevertheless on foot!"
"And miss tea? You know me better than that. Anyway, it started snowing once I was a mile out from the inn, I had no choice. And I would rather be at Bag End than stay another night there," stepping away, she looked around. "Now, where is young Frodo?"
Heather felt a tug at her skirts, and looked down to find the little hobbit. "Right here, Aunt Heather!"
"Oh, Frodo!" She picked him up and into her arms for a long hug. "I've missed you, little one! Has Uncle Bilbo been treating you well? Let me look at you!" Heather set him back down, and knelt in front of him. "Hmm, still a bit peaky," holding his face in her hands and moving it from right to left, "but your eyes are much brighter here. Yes, this is good!"
"'Course he's treating me well! Come, I will see you to the fireplace, your hands are freezing, Aunt Heather! Yes, he makes all of my favorites, and tells me stories before naptime AND bedtime, and he lets the gardener's son play with me, and-"
Frodo led his aunt to the fireplace in the living room, and pushed a chair closer to it for her to sit in. Heather sat down, and listened intently to Frodo while she warmed her hands in front of the blaze.
"Well, I am certainly glad to hear this! Everyone at Brandy Hall misses you, and will be glad to hear that you are happy and well cared for here."
"Now Frodo, what do we do for guests who just came in the door?" Bilbo said, who had been watching with a soft smile on his face.
"We feed them!" The little hobbit exclaimed. The adults gave a chuckle.
"And..?"
"We...take their bags?"
Bilbo nodded, "Yes, lad. Mind taking Aunt Heather's bag to the spare room near mine?"
"Yes, Uncle Bilbo!" And Frodo ran off.
The adults laughed again. Frodo had seemed to blossom here with Bilbo's attention and care. Heather was glad.
Tea, dinner, and supper passed. After giving Frodo a good-night kiss to his forehead, Bilbo led Heather to her room, and all was quiet in Bag End.
The next morning, Heather awoke to feeling sore all-over, but especially her ankle that she must have twisted from that fall. She shivered as she got out of bed and washed her face in a basin on a nearby table. She looked back to her bed. It looked warm, and quite inviting compared to the cool air in the room. Instead, she put on a dressing gown and went to the kitchen, slightly limping all the way.
"Is that sausage I smell?" She called from the entrance to the kitchen. Heather was surprised she didn't smell it from her room, or the hallway. Frodo looked from the stove, and confirmed happily.
"The lad insisted!" Bilbo said while pulling muffins out of the oven. "We rarely have it, and he wanted it as a special treat for your being here!"
Heather sat down at the table, and told them, "You shouldn't have! But I appreciate it nonetheless." Bilbo sat a full teacup and saucer in front of his guest. Once eggs, toast, sausage, and muffins, with butter and jam at the table-center, were set at the table, they discussed plans for the day. Heather offered to give some of Bag End a good dusting, but Bilbo nor Frodo wanted to put her work! So she counteroffered with clothes-mending whilst telling Frodo (embellished) stories of her journey here by the fireplace. Bilbo laughed, and said that had bread to bake and meats to prepare for the day's meals, so he wouldn't be joining for very much today.
Plans set, the hobbits got up from the dining table. Bilbo and Frodo started to clean up.
Heather coughed, dryly, into her elbow. Bilbo turned, "Are you alright?"
She waved him away, she was just fine, thank you, just a tickle in the throat is all. Heather took up her empty teacup to refill it from the last of the teapot that was still over the kitchen stove, but she stumbled and took a sharp breath after another small coughing fit. Her ankle, after a long, sedentary breakfast in the cold air, had stiffened and hurt more than it had when she had woken up. Bilbo came over to support her by the arm.
"Are you sure, my dear?" Frodo, too, looked concerned.
"I think I twisted my ankle in that fall yesterday, Bilbo. Nothing some rest won't take care of! Just let me know where your torn clothes are, and I'll sit the day away by the fire place-"
"Nonsense! Frodo-lad, go help your aunt to the living room, to the nice chair by the fireplace. I'll finish up here."
Frodo set down the stack of dishes he was bringing to the sink, and took Heather's arm. "Come on, Aunt Heatherica!"
The young hobbit replenished and stoked the living room fireplace while his aunt situated herself in the overstuffed chair next to it. "Come now, Frodo, I don't need all this pampering! Just tell me where the laundry and sewing stuff are, and we can go about our days."
Frodo looked at her, smiling, "Sure, Aunt Heather," he stood up, "How do you like your tea?"
She sighed, and asked for a bit of milk and one sugar.
Frodo returned with a tall bowl of fresh snow in one hand, and a teacup and saucer balanced in the other. Heather accepted the teacup, and gingerly set her aching foot into the snow. She shivered. Frodo fetched a blanket to wrap around her shoulders. "I feel bad, Frodo. A youngster like you shouldn't be waiting on me like this."
"I never get to play host, Aunt Heather! Don't worry about a thing! Can I get you anything else?"
Heather sighed, and resigned herself to her fate. Smiling, "Well, alright. Would you mind fetching something small for me to do? I can't stand idle hands, you know! And while I work, we can catch up properly!"
Frodo beamed, and galloped off. Heather stifled another coughing fit, and took a gulp of tea.
The day passed, Bilbo going to and from the kitchen for meals while Heather and Frodo stayed by the fire, Frodo occasionally leaving Heather to crochet to help Bilbo with chores. The next days continued to be overcast, cold, and snowy. Heather's ankle healed, but eventually she couldn't hide her coughing fits. Concerned, Bilbo had Heather stay in bed, alternating with Frodo for her meals. Once her voice started going hoarse, Bilbo quit letting her prepare her own tea and prepared soups and stews for lunch, dinner, and supper.
"Bilbo, I can do all this myself!" She whisper-shouted, which was all she could really do by means of speaking at this point. Bilbo paused in his refilling the teapot by her bedside.
"No speaking, Heatherica! And I will not have a guest of mine lifting a hand while she is ill! Now, I'll fetch you another blanket and you'll like it."
Heather huffed. She already had plenty of layers on. Minutes later, Frodo came into her bedroom with a quilt and a book, to help with her boredom, he said.
"You mean, to keep me trapped in bed?"
"Of course not, Aunt Heather," he placated. He looked over his shoulder, and then pulled out the crochet project Heather had started working on from between folds of the quilt. She smiled mischievously, "There's a good lad," and she went back to work.
"You really shouldn't speak, you wouldn't want to get worse." Frodo settled himself into a chair near her bed after setting the quilt over Heather. He picked up the book, and began to read aloud.
That night, Heather kept the whole hobbit-hole awake with her intensified coughing. Bilbo had Frodo sleep in the living room, as it was farthest from the noise, and in case Heather had something contagious. Bilbo came into her room throughout the night to keep her water pitcher and teapot full. Both adults were exhausted that morning.
Frodo prepared breakfast, and Bilbo contemplated calling for a doctor. Heather wanted to tell him that she would be fine, further rest and hot drinks would do the trick, but Bilbo gave her a stern look every time she tried to speak. She couldn't speak, anyway, having lost her voice completely now, but that didn't stop her from trying when Bilbo needed a piece of her mind while he fretted.
Bilbo reached over and put the back of his hand to her forehead. He frowned, "A tad feverish." He picked up her breakfast tray, and then returned to refill her water pitcher, now holding a thick cloak. "I have to run some errands today, so it will be just you and Frodo. I've told him not to wander in here, we wouldn't want him catching whatever you have, but he will probably be in anyway. Can I get you anything before I leave?"
Heather looked around.
"Book?" She tried to say, then she held her hands out to mime reading in hopes that Bilbo would understand. Heather had plenty of water and tea, as well as blankets and pillows. She wasn't in the mood for crochet, so reading was her best bet at amusement. Once it dawned on him, he smiled and went to grab one or two.
Bilbo held up two books upon his return, one an anthology of short stories and the other an old favorite, and said goodbye before going out. Heather took them both, and set them aside. She had lied. Her body was beginning to really ache and she was so tired, so she rearranged her pillows and curled up beneath the blankets.
"Heather? Heather?"
A hand shook her shoulder.
They did it again. Heather squinted her eyes, and blinked them open. It was dark save for a few candles.
The hand on her shoulder wasn't Bilbo's. He stood a few feet away.
The gentle-hobbit in front of her smiled lightly, "I am Floribert Babcock, a doctor from this neighborhood. Bilbo, here, is worried about you. He says you have a cough and that your voice has gone hoarse?"
Heather blinked away the grogginess as best as she could, and nodded.
"He also told me that you had a slight fever this morning. Do you mind if I check?"
Heather shook her head, and the doctor reached over to set the back of his hand against her brow, then both backs of his hands against her cheeks. "Your fever has gone up, but not alarmingly so. May I check your pulse?"
Heather offered her wrist, to which the doctor gave her a nod and held her pulse point between his forefinger and thumb. Floribert sat silently for a minute.
"Alright, you seem to be alive," he joked, "Now, if you are able, would you cough for me? Helps me know what you might be sick with, and what we can do to treat it." He looked at her expectantly.
She had actually been holding back a cough for a few minutes now. Waking up had brought her back to a very sore body, especially her throat and chest. A small part of her was glad that Bilbo went out and fetched an expert.
Heather coughed into her elbow, and it was the sort that made others wince. It stung her throat, and tugged at her chest muscles. She had to catch her breath afterward.
"It wasn't this bad earlier, Dr. Floribert," Bilbo said from his corner of the room.
"Is that so?" The doctor said offhandedly. He was rifling through a bag by his feet, which Heather assumed he had brought with him. He took out some paper and wrote a note on it with a piece of graphite. Floribert held it up and said, "Just a reminder to myself to come by with some tea sachets and some medicine for you. I didn't bring much with me, I'm afraid, but I won't be long."
The doctor stood up, and Bilbo shook his hand. "Thank you for coming, Dr. Floribert. Are you sure you wouldn't have me come with you, so you don't have to go out in the cold too much?"
"No trouble at all, Mister Baggins! I've been getting quite bored in my smial these past few days, a bit of walking around in this weather makes me appreciate my fireplace even more! No need to come with me, I need to prepare those teas and that tonic, which could take some time. Stay here and mind your charges," the doctor replied.
He turned back to Heather. "Feel better soon, Mistress Brandybuck. Hopefully those incoming remedies will get you back on your feet."
Heather nodded and gave him a gentle smile, then Bilbo walked the doctor out of Bag End.
Once they were gone, she flopped onto her side. She just wanted to sleep, but she was thirsty, but she didn't want to drink because that would hurt. Heather closed her eyes, and was about to drift off when she heard gently creaking floorboards before being muffled by a rug.
"Aunt Heather, you've been asleep for awhile, so here's some chicken broth Bilbo's been minding all day."
She opened her eyes to find little Frodo at her bedside, clutching a mug between his hands and holding it out to her.
"You shouldn't be here, Frodo," Heather rasped without sitting up.
"But you haven't eaten all day! Take a sip and then I will leave."
With a deep breath, Heather heaved herself up to sitting, and took the mug. It was delightfully warm, and it soothed her throat as it went down. She closed her eyes; this was bliss. "Thank you, Frodo."
"You're welcome, Aunt Heather! Alright, I'll leave now so I don't get sick, so Bilbo says. Feel better soon!" Frodo then ran off, the pattering of his feet growing fainter as he went to the living room.
As awful as she felt, Heather felt lighter having been treated by Frodo. The broth was perfect, not too salty but still nourishing. She finished the mug, and tucked herself back under her covers.
The next time she awoke, the sun shone through the window. Heather felt just as bad as last time, but now hungrier. She sat herself up and reached for her water cup. Bilbo came in while she took a long drink.
"Good morning, Heatherica. I figured you wouldn't be up until second breakfast. Here we are," he set a full breakfast tray over her lap. Warm applesauce, hot porridge, fresh tea, and scrambled eggs. She tucked in heartily. All of the foods felt nice against her aching throat, but the tea was...unique. Heather turned to give Bilbo a look to ask about it, but he had left.
A few minutes later, Bilbo walked in with his own full plate of second breakfast, and sat in the chair in her room. He ate a whole muffin before he looked up and saw her attempting to ask about it.
"Oh, that's the blend from the doctor. He said it might taste odd, but would help. He also gave me a cough syrup with peppermint and chamomile. One tablespoon twice a day, I''ll give you the bottle after we eat." Bilbo was about to take a bite of toast, when he also sheepishly remembered, "And, I, uh, figured you'd like some company. You feeling better today?"
Heather stifled a giggle, but shook her head. "The food and the company help," she rasped with a smile. Bilbo returned it, and told her to drink her tea before going off about how Frodo would be happy to hear that his cooking was helping his aunt, and that Frodo looked forward to the rest of her stay once she was better.
She listened to Bilbo ramble, a delightful change from sleeping and crocheting, and drank her tea while feeling the warmth of Bag End chase away her illness.
