Having an Arabian in New Jersey these days is a bit strange because they’ve literally become a rare breed here. I just searched equinenow and dream horse and neither of those sites have a single Arabian for sale in the sate right now, or even a past sold one for the latter. My friend Megan thought I was nuts for buying a horse from Florida sight unseen, but at the time I was looking, not only were there no Arabians with Eukaliptus bloodlines within a 150 mile radius, there were barely any Arabians, period. There was only one in NJ publicly listed for sale, an older saddle seat mare named Lexi Bey. Then there were a couple of black straight Egyptian fillies in lower New York that were pretty, but too young to start and expected to mature below 14 hands. None for sale on Facebook, either.

The weird thing is that I don’t remember them being so scarce growing up. At the shore house barn, there was an Arabian mare named JJ in her 40s and her daughter. Then a family from PA moved to the area and they had two purebreds and two National Show Horses that they boarded there for four years. But there are no Arabians or half Arabians currently there. My current barn, too, has no full Arabians except for Amba. They do have a Peruvian Paso though, and so does the shore barn. 😆

Isn’t this strange, though? Being the most densely populated state NJ isn’t lacking in horses in general, and there are actually several rare breeds like Fjords and the aforementioned Pasos that are not so unusual to see. But Arabians? Forget it. You’d probably have to go up to Carousel Farms, which to my knowledge is the only breed barn for Arabians in this state. Even my childhood lesson barns like Essex Equestrian Center and the place where Treasure and Admiral were don’t have a single Arabian lesson horse anymore, but they used to. I’ve never seen one go through the Cranbury Auction, either, though they are not lacking in Friesians and Dutch Harness Horses.
