One of the Termez attractions is the famous Friendship Bridge, the only one on the southern border between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan connecting Termez with Hayraton, the Afghan port.

More than a century ago, in place of the Friendship Bridge, there was first a wooden and then iron bridge through Amu Darya. The first wooden bridge was built under the supervision of the Russian tsarist army general M. Annenkov in May 1888, when Russia was just starting to develop Central Asia. At that time the construction of the Trans-Caspian Railway was underway and a crossing means across the Amu Darya was badly needed.

We crossed the mighty Mekong River and this means we are in Laos! Country No. 36 on our Worldbicycletour! The Mekong is the border river between Thailand and Laos and normally you have to take a bus to get over the bridge. On the thai side we just said that we would prefer to cycle and then suddenly they just let us go and we made it over the bridge! On the Laos side they were a little but suspicious, because we arrived at the passport control a bit before the bus arrived. But it seems that no one really saw us cycling over the bridge, so everything was cool! We still don't know if we were super lucky to cycle it or if this is a normal thing! But whatever! Traveling overland to Laos - from Bangkok in Thailand to Vietiane in Laos 😙🥳🇱🇦 Very easy and inexpensive 1. Take the night bus to Nong Khai - around 10 hours drive. When you arrive at the bus station in Nong Khai get a tuk tuk for around 80 to 100 tbh to bring you to the Thai border. Watch because they scam you with the visas. Do not buy it from them. After you said bye bye to Thailand and have your exit stamp in your passport, buy a bus ticket for 15 thb to cross the Friendshipbridge. Walking is not allowed. Enjoy the short ride. Arriving at the immigration post look for the counter - visa on arrival, do the paper work, pay 1300 thb and walk into Laos. Very simple. It takes not more the 2 minutes. On top of it, Immigration people are very nice and helpful. Welcome to Laos. Take a tuk tuk for around 200 thb which brings you to Vientiane to your hotel and have fun.
