Kacchan & Deku - Izuku & Dynamight

I was going to wait before talking about it, but in light of this week leak I thought it was so appropriate that I needed to talk about it now.

So SPOILER ALERT regarding chapter 322 leak and anime S05E18.

Kacchan & Deku

Okay so in the 5x18 episode there is a scene where Midoriya is catching the uniform suitcases and throwing them at Bakugou and Todoroki.

Midoriya used "Kacchan" and "Shouto-kun".

Now the Shouto-kun is pretty normal, considering that this is Todoroki's hero name. So by using it, Midoriya is acknowledging that they are currently in a professional context. This is Hero Deku talking to Hero Souto.

What is worth noting though is that Midoriya is not referring to Bakugou as what he thought Bakugou's hero name was.

I think there could be several reasons as to why Midoriya didn't used "Bakugou", the biggest one is that Midoriya spent his whole life calling him "Kacchan" so suddenly switching to "Bakugou" which he has probably never used in his life felt so alien that he couldn't do it.

But another reason is that both Midoriya and Bakugou always had had huge difficulties in separating their personal and professional lives when the other is concerned. We saw it during the first training exercise, then once again in the final exam where they let their personal feeling get in the way.

So Hero Deku can't talk to Hero "Bakugou" (Dynamight) because he still sees his childhood friend "Kacchan" first, before seeing the Hero "Bakugou".

For Bakugou it's actually the opposite. (Did I mentioned before how much I love all the parallels in this manga? It's not like I'm compiling a whole mega huge post listing those, or like I've got a tag just for it or anything... haha).

Like the moment Midoriya decided that "Deku" was going to be his hero name and change the meaning, Bakugou had no choice but be unable to differentiate between childhood friend "Deku" and Hero "Deku". (You're not going to convince me that Midoriya didn't thought at some point that picking "Deku" would be a good way to force Bakugou to indirectly acknowledge him as a hero every time he's calling him "Deku").

So in order for Kacchan and Deku to disentangle themselves and come back on equal footings; Midoriya needs to acknowledge "Dynamight", while Bakugou needs to reach out to "Izuku".

Now the thing is, I think Bakugou is a lot more self-aware than Midoriya and some part of him probably already knew about that. But back at the Endeavor agency, Bakugou didn't feel that he was ready to show "Dynamight" to Deku yet, because he needed to properly atone to "Izuku" first. And he felt that he was not quite there yet.

Which besides the "I want someone else to hear my hero name first" is one of the reason I think Bakugou didn't tell Midoriya his hero name.

So, guys, guys. The chapter 322 leak!!!! OMG!!!

Do you want to know what's funny? The whole "Kacchan & Deku" analysis thing was sitting in my draft since episode 18 came out, so how much of a freaking coincidence is that that just the week after we got a chapter called "Great Explosion God Dynamight", with Bakugou freaking apologizing and calling Midoriya "Izuku"?!!!

Like whoa! This, this, right there is the stars aligning!

This is Kacchan finally reaching out and apologizing to childhood friend "Izuku". This is Bakugou saying I'm not trying to save Hero Deku, but my dumb self-sacrificing childhood friend Izuku.

This is Izuku finally seeing Hero Dynamight and not just childhood friend, symbol of victory Kacchan.

This is the culmination 320+ chapters of development, the apex of Kacchan character growth as a person in order to become a hero and the completion of Deku lone hero's journey in order to recognize his importance as a person.

I can't wait for the chapter to come out!!!!

*Willow opens the door to discover the Buffybot*

WILLOW: “Bu-Buffy. Uh, come in. Shh! It's late!

*Willow ushers the bot in, closes the door. They walk through the darkened living room* 

Wait. 

*Willow picks up a blanket from the floor, wraps it around herself, and she and the bot go out onto a balcony*

We can talk out here.

*She closes the door quietly and goes over to the bot*

Did Xander find you? He-he was looking for you. 

*Shot of Willow from the bot's perspective. Her attributes are: best friend; gay (1999-present); witch; good with computers*

He hasn't come back. Anya sat up waiting.”

BUFFYBOT: “I don't know where Xander is. I haven't seen him. And when I came out of the tunnel, Spike was gone. I need to find him.”

WILLOW: 

*Winces* 

“Um... Buffy, this thing with Spike, i-i-it isn't true, is it? You didn't, you know, sleep with Spike?”

BUFFYBOT: “No. 

*Willow smiles with relief*

I had sex with Spike. 

*Willow winces again* 

I'm sorry if it bothers you. You're my best friend.”

WILLOW: “I-I am. And I, I always will be, no matter what you do. I, I'm just trying to figure out why this happened, and I, I think with... your mom and everything... everyone was being all sympathetic, and, and making you feel weak. A-and Spike wasn't like that. So, just this one time, you just... did something kinda... crazy.”

BUFFYBOT: 

*Shakes head* 

“It wasn't one time. It was lots of times. And lots of different ways. I could make sketches.”

WILLOW: 

*Disgusted*

“No! Buffy, there is something seriously wrong here! I... 

*The bot looks confused* 

Okay, yeah, you've been with a vampire before, but Angel had a soul.” 

BUFFYBOT: “Angel's lame. His hair grows straight up, and he's bloody stupid.” 

WILLOW: 

*Confused* 

"Okay... look, I just wanna help you. Let me help you.”

BUFFYBOT: “You're my best friend.”

WILLOW: “Yeah. Again, I... really am, but...”

BUFFYBOT: “You're recently gay.”

WILLOW: “Um...”

*Behind them, the apartment lights up. They turn to see through the window that Xander has returned*

A few questions I have with this little conversation between Willow and what she believes is Buffy but is actually Buffybot because I am a little confused by it: 

First of all, being a whiz kid with computer technology and AI herself,... how in the world did Willow not recognize that she was talking to a robot? I mean with her past experience with Malcolm as well as how observant she is with figuring out stuff that doesn’t seem quite right. Noticing how out of context it is etc...

Second, with Buffybot referring to her being Buffy’s best friend and recently gay, how did she not recognize that that wasn’t Buffy? Buffy doesn’t talk like that.

Third, why is Willow so disturbed over the thought of Buffy sleeping with Spike? She thought it was flattering when Spike found her attractive enough to want to bite her in her dorm room. She also seems to think grief would drive Buffy to it. She brings up how Buffy had first been with Angel but that that was different because he had a soul - even though the whole event caused him to lose it. 

Perhaps I’m overthinking it too much and they just wrote Willow responding like this just to further aid in the drama surrounding the situation of Buffybot. But maybe you guys could help me out in answering these questions. I know when the real Buffy does start being physically intimate with Spike and Tara tells Willow about it that she is very concerned by it. But unless it’s a jealousy thing - I really don’t get why she in particular is so disturbed by it. Concerned, sure - because Buffy is her best friend and she doesn’t want to see her get hurt. Disturbed, no. I get it with Xander because he originally had a crush on Buffy and is discriminatory towards Spike. But not Willow. I don’t think she had a crush, nor do I think she’s discriminatory towards Spike. It doesn’t make sense.

*Spoilers for Flash S05E18

So...that was a great episode of the Flash. I really enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun.

Noticeably, no Cicada stuff. 

Truth be told, I’m not someone who absolutely hates the Cicada story line. I was interested in the concepts and several key moments but I mostly just think it was kinda poorly constructed/executed and was severely hampered by Chris Klein’s weak acting. 

However, the West-Allen family and Thawne stuff has the most emotional heft to it by virtue of the people involved and the years we’ve spent with them. So focusing on them this episode was a good choice. I wish we had spent even more time fleshing this out earlier in the season.

Still, I learned some new stuff which I wasn’t expecting.

For example, Thawne’s torture and execution chamber. Like...Jesus Christ...

Thawne’s a shitty, evil person but even he doesn’t deserve to be routinely tortured as punishment in the lead up to his execution while a clock counts down outside his cell.

What kinda human rights violating, dystopian ass shit was that?

There has been a through-line this season examining how Central City is adapting to meta threats from a legal and judicial standpoint. (With CCPD’s meta responses, Cecile’s job, Joss’s case, etc.)

What does this say about the future of the American penal system in the Flash world? Especially pertaining to meta criminals?

It was also interesting to see the catalyst to Nora finding out she has powers and what led her to work with Thawne in the first place. Her best friend dying in her arms and Nora feeling guilty cuz she wasn’t able to save her was fucking sad.

Interesting to see Future Iris as well. I’m glad that she seemed to land somewhere in between the horrible mother early Nora painted Iris as in her anger and the “perfect” mother some people desperately want Iris to be. I prefer flawed but trying Iris. Protective and loving and just utterly sad. Sometimes overbearing and helicopter-ing who quite frankly made a mistake that damaged her relationship with her daughter but is one that hopefully they can recover from.

I loved the scene with Barry and Thawne. Just electric, as always.

I also can’t wait til Iris finds out about Barry sending Nora back to the future without telling her. Gimme that angst!!!!

It was also noticeable that Nora still hasn’t revealed that she wanted to find a way to save Barry by changing the timeline. I’m sure that’ll come up in another angst-y moment soon.

I’m gonna be honest...I’m not a fan of so many overt parallels between Nora and Barry. One or two would’ve been fine but they have been doing it all season. I know it’s a big TV and Movie trope to hard parallel parents and children to shorthand emotional connections between the characters and the audience but...I’ve never been a big fan of it in storytelling. 

I just feel like it often keeps the child character from feeling like a fully realized person and instead like more of a clone of their parents. This is especially so when those behavioral and/or emotional similarities have no basis in anything via biology or child rearing. 

Why do Nora and Barry have to like the same ice cream? Why do they have to have the same excited personality? Why does Nora have to make the exact same speedster mistakes in the same manner? Poker Face again...why?

IDK, it’s not something just the Flash is guilty of doing in their stories but I just decided to mention it now.

PS. Thawne getting Big Belly Burger for his last meal. lmfao I love this show’s devotion to this fake food franchise.
