Tom predates every modern FNAF canon. He was made back before it was confirmed that the souls haunting the animatronics were children, actually! I actually much prefer the thought that the souls are from adults and that they're just kind of 'stuck' in animatronic bodies, retaining their memories and personalities. I think it's kind of a waste of potential that the animatronics don't have much in the way of their own personalities- Poppy Playtime succeeds and is stronger in their character design, I think!

Anyway!

Tom was a 30-something animatronic fanatic. He was part of online communities and everything, frequenting forum sites and falling in love with old suits. He was super into the technical aspects of springlock suits and various knockoffs of the Fredbear cast, eventually sourcing a knockoff suit in half decent condition. It was the fastest purchase he'd ever made, and he spent many months cleaning the... gunk... out of it and restoring it to it's former glory. He never intended to actually wear the suit- he was well aware of the dangerous, faulty mechanisms in even a new suit- but one day he figured maybe wearing it just once wouldn't hurt...

He wasn't found for weeks. He didn't wake up for months.

In that time, the suit was cleaned (again🙄) and auctioned to some girl in New Mexico. Imagine her surprise when she realized she'd bought a whole person instead of a weird, niche item.

Tom and this girl become friends and he essentially haunts her whole apartment after that, going on wacky Weekend at Bernie's adventures except instead of a dead body, it's a giant animatronic anteater.

I never developed his friendgirl or the third guy for the trio in my head, but I have always adored Tom. He acts out his old human traits- eating, drinking, finding new ways to perform these unnecessary functions with his new body and breaking it in the process... Pictured, he's using some kind of motor inside of him to 'drink', which pleases him greatly.
