Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Jodi Payne is originally from North Branch, Mich. She is a communications study major with a dance minor and plans to graduate in May 2018.
Jodi first chose to attend NMU because of its adventurous nature and strong academics. She stayed because of the faculty and staff, who she says make the university special and intimate.
In her time at NMU, Jodi said she was fortunate to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, last fall.
“While I was there, I participated in a service project with a non-profit called Ikamva Youth,” Jodi said. “I spent my semester organizing presentations, collecting student data, tutoring and hanging out/mentoring low income students. It was such an amazing intercultural experience and gave me an incredible insight into the world of communication on the other side of the globe.”
Jodi said she is most excited about joining orientation staff because she loves NMU, and she wouldn’t be the person she is today without the staff, programs, resources and location of this university. As for incoming freshmen, her piece of advice is to just ‘do you, as silly as it sounds!’
“There are so many opportunities here, student organizations, and programs,” Jodi said. “These four years are so incredibly short, I implore you to spend them doing what you want, and what makes you happy! Aim for growth and success but when failure happens, know that there is a learning curve, and that the best growth comes from the willingness to try again. Northern will change your life, if you do all that you can to be happy, and embrace the mistakes, good or bad!”

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner is a sports science major from Marquette, Mich. She plans to graduate in 2019.
“A big part of why I decided to attend NMU was the location,” Shayla said. “Marquette, Mich. is home to me. It offers numerous points of interest that include natural beauty, culinary delights and an active community. It made sense that NMU was a fitting place for me to continue my education and running career, and at an affordable price. Northern’s small class sizes were important to me and I have met some remarkable staff and faculty.“
As a sports science major, Shayla works closely with the health and human performance department. She has had the opportunity to work with expert faculty, who she said have really helped her learn a lot in a short amount of time.
“The sports science major provides the perfect mix of in-class and hands-on learning,” Shayla said. “There are many research opportunities to shadow, get involved in or conduct. I also like that the cluster minor allows me to pick classes I’m more interested in.”
In addition to orientation staff, Shayla is a member of the NMU track and field team, Student Leader Fellowship Program and Superior Edge. She is also a McNair Scholar.
This summer, as a member of orientation staff, Shayla said she is excited to become further in touch with the institution.
“I’m excited to learn more, touch the lives of others, make lifelong memories and friends, grow as an individual, and have an unforgettable experience in the next five weeks.”

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Ken Schlesser is a secondary education major with an emphasis in mathematics. He is originally from Hometown, Ill.
”I decided to come to NMU because coming from a suburb of Chicago, the closeness to nature isn’t something you get too often,” Ken said. “It is an awesome change of scenery. I fell in love with Northern the minute I stepped on campus. I felt comfortable and at home on my first visit here.”
During his time at NMU, Ken spent a summer working for a school back home, where he was able to get a better perspective of what teachers do every day. He said it was a neat opportunity to be able to shadow some of the teachers who taught him, and he enjoyed being able to see their teaching styles and listen to their advice.
"I’m excited to be an orientation staff member because I love to make connections with people,” Ken said. “Being an orientation staff member will really allow me to make connections and help incoming students figure their way around NMU.”
