Fremantle Corona Diaries. Bruna Chiovitti, Hidden Treasures creative producer, City of Fremantle, Fremantle. July wasn’t the same this year without my favourite music festival—Hidden Treasures. There was no riding into Fremantle’s historic west end on a Thursday night and warming up beside a fire pit on the street before discovering who was playing behind the doors of the old workers’ clubs. But bring on September—@hiddentreasuresfreo is back on the calendar. The City of Fremantle started Hidden Treasures in 2011 as a way to invigorate night life in the city in the middle of winter. Live music every Thursday night in venues like the Wyola Club, Buffalo Club and Navy Club—venues most of the public would never have entered. “It really captured the community spirit,” says Bruna, who was involved in the festival that first year and has been programming and producing it since 2012. “Inviting people into these old venues. There was a sense of discovery. In the first year you could feel it build and by the final couple of weeks there were queues to get in.” Last year, Hidden Treasures changed format when it was included in 10 Nights in Port—the rescheduled and rebranded Fremantle Festival. It was to again be part of 10 Nights in Port this year but with the shutdown and restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the whole festival was cancelled. “I had already programmed Hidden Treasures, so it was very sad to send messages to bands saying it was cancelled… We thought we’d be in lockdown until after June. But we were back in the office mid-May. A decision was made that Hidden Treasures would go ahead. It was something everyone needed.” With the phased lifting of restrictions, Bruna thought the venues would be at full capacity for September. But with WA Premier Mark McGowan’s announcement this week that phase four restrictions would remain in place until late in October, Bruna is in the process of confirming capacities for the venues— @navyclubfremantle, @fremantlebuffaloclub, @nationalhotelfreo and @ps.artspace.
