She had a bail hearing today (June 8, 2020) where the judge refused to lower her bail from $400,000 to $15,000. She also contracted COVID-19 at some point in April or May, and needs to be able to go home and rest. Her next hearing is set for September 11.

This poor woman is being unfairly charged for defending herself against the man sexually abusing her, and needs the funds to pay her bail so she can finally go home, but $400,000 is a lot of money, in addition to the $45,000 she needs for her defense. Another way you can help if you cannot donate yourself is to spread the word, especially to celebrities. They have enough money that even getting a few to make major donations could be enough to free Chrystul. I would like to suggest that we, the people of Tumblr, tweet at celebrities. 

The rules: donate, if you have the financial means to do so. Then whether you donated or not, tag 10 celebrities on twitter, then retweet, and reblog on tumblr. The farther we can spread the word, the more we can do to help Chrystul pay her bail.

I believe that there are a lot of Tumblr users right now who want to make a difference but might not know how. If you can, please donate to the fund to free Chrystul, and then use your platform on twitter to continue to spread the word. BACKGROUND Chrystul Kizer is a black teenage survivor of violence. At only 17-years old, she was charged with multiple felonies for defending herself from an older white man who has been accused of ongoing physical and sexual abuse of not only Chrystul, but multiple other young girls. A resident of Milwaukee, WI, Chrystul spent her 18th birthday incarcerated in the Kenosha County Jail, where she remains confined. If convicted, Chrystul could face a sentence of life in prison. Chrystul needs the opportunity to be supported in safe, healing spaces in the community – not the prospect of additional trauma, assault, and solitary confinement in a Wisconsin penitentiary. Recent campaigns to free criminalized survivors have highlighted how gender-based violence such as sexual assault is linked to the prison industrial complex. Survived and Punished cites ACLU figures in reporting that almost 60% of people confined in women’s prisons across the United States and up to 94% of some women’s prison populations have a history of physical or sexual abuse prior to incarceration. In addition, we know that policing and prisons disproportionately impacts communities of color. However, these campaigns have illustrated the power of people to raise awareness, make demands, and free survivors. Right now, District Attorney Michael Graveley is withholding evidence which supports the case for Chrystul’s self-defense. We refuse to allow the criminal punishment system to disappear Chrystul and further traumatize her. ACTION This is a call to demand that the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office drop all charges and release Chrystul immediately. Please direct your calls and emails to the DA’s office on January 9, the day before Chrystul’s next court date. "Although Ohio does acknowledge the horrors of human trafficking, the state has ultimately disregarded the grip human trafficking can have over a person's life. Alexis Martin grew up with drug addicted, abusive and absent parents. She was first sexually assaulted at the age of 9. Shortly after, Alexis was kidnapped and forced into prostitution by violent traffickers. Alexis told a juvenile court probation officer about the kidnapping but the officer did nothing to help her or identify her as a trafficking victim. At the age of 15, Alexis was convicted of murdering her trafficker, Angelo Kerney. Alexis was engaged in a sexual encounter with Kerney's brother when a rival trafficker arrived with plans to rob and shoot Kerney. After Alexis was arrested in connection with the robbery and murder, the juvenile court recognized that she was a victim of human trafficking. Under Ohio's Safe Harbor Law, Alexis should have received a guardian ad litem to recommend the most effective responses from the court, like addition treatment and mental health care. During that time, the court can put all charged on hold, place the juvenile in the appropriate treatments and when completed dismiss and expunge all records of the case. However, Alexis never received a guardian ad litem; she never even knew she was entitled to this type of advocacy. Instead Alexis' case was moved to adult court and she was convicted, at the age of 16, of the murder of her trafficker. The court sentenced her to 21 years to life in prison. In August of 2018 the Ohio Supreme Court ruled to uphold this unfair sentence. This Governor, John Kasich, has the ability to grant clemency for Alexis Martin prior to leaving office next week.
