Hey guys! I know there are a lot of people just starting out building their business or startup, and it can be pretty tough to get off to a running start. So I wrote an article to help out all the newbies like me, that had to start from scratch with an audience of 0.Here's how I managed to get my first 300 subscribers in less than a week:Read it below, or here on the original article pageFrom 0 to 300 subscribers in a Week - How to build an Email list from Scratch for almost FreeChances are if you're reading this you've seen one of the many posts about how someone "tripled their email list from 3,000 people to 9,000" using a few strategies. That's great for them, but I think a lot of people who are in the most need of help have less than 50 people on their email list, like I did. 300 subscribers is nowhere near miraculous, but if you're just starting out breaking above 100 subscribers in a week feels like an incredible achievement. As a disclaimer, I said I did this in a week and for almost free, which is true, but it takes a bit of preparation before you get the results, some of which won't be free. How I did itFirst, I'll summarize the steps of what I did, then talk about each process.(If you already have a functional landing page site with a clear CTA, skip to step 4)Figure out what value your newsletter will provideBuild a landing page with clear CTACreate a lead generating offerGet interested trafficRefine your website based on Feedback1. Figure out what value your newsletter will provideThis is step is vital to the long term success of your business. Remember that it's not about you, it's about what you can do for them. Do some brainstorming, and step into the shoes of your ideal Customer. Imagine if you were your target demographic, why would you want to be on your newsletter? Do you offer discounts, valuable knowledge, etc? If you were planning on spamming people to buy your product 3x a week, you won't get far with the emails you do manage to get. Before pulling the trigger on any email you send to your subscribers, make it clear to your subscribers the value being provided within the email.2. Build a landing page with clear CTAIf you don't have a website yet, and just want something easy you can use mailchimp to create a clean looking landing page for free. That being said, having a top tier website is essential to most online business, so you might as well make one. The easiest way to make your website look professional, is to copy relevant pieces of a well refined site that knows what it's doing. A good example is StoryBrand: This company shows people how to refine their message and make websites that sell better, so you know their own website implements those techniques: https://storybrand.com/online-marketing-workshop/. In my case, I bought a domain and setup an actual website then spent some time refining it to be responsive to mobile traffic. When creating your landing page, have in mind what you would most like a user to do, and place that CTA prominently. I also recommend placing a less prominent CTA on the site, that goes to your lead generating offer. Essentially, your prominent CTA will be the "hard sell" for people that already want what you have, just give it to them. The secondary CTA generally offers something that a broader range of people might be interested in, since they aren't yet ready to buy from you.3. Create a lead generating offerThis is the most essential part to building your email list. A good lead generating offer is something you can offer in exchange for an email address, like a Free PDF guide, or Giveaway of a niche related product. My current lead generating offer, is a giveaway done on KingSumo for people to win a free pre-order of my party game Dumpster Dealers. Enter an email address for a chance to win the game, and refer people to get more entries. Simple, effective, and niche targeted. If you aren't going to giveaway your own product, I recommend giving away something very related to your niche, in the neighborhood value of $25 - $50. You don't want to break the bank since you're just getting started, and if the item is too expensive you may get entrants who would rather sell the item for profit than use it themselves. For the same reason, you don't want to do a broad giveaway that everyone with a functional brain would want, like an ipad or amazon gift-card, because then you just get tons of freebie seekers that have no interest in ever buying from your business.4. Get interested traffic and FeedbackNow for the interesting part, that I call the "Feedback hack". There are similar articles like mine about promoting your giveaway to generate leads, and almost all of them say to stay away from Reddit. Don't listen to them. They say the reddit community has a deep distaste for anything that smells like self-promotion, and that's true. But, if you frame the context of your post correctly, it comes off as authentic. So the Feedback Hack, is to write up a text post in relevant /r/ communities, asking for feedback on your site. ( /r/Startups /r/entrepreneur /r/giveaways /r/free are a good place to start). This is a HUGE win-win, because you get extremely valuable feedback from your target market on how they experience your site, AND you might add some interested people to your contacts due to your lead generating offer. But you can't just link to your site saying "Please give Feedback" in the title. How you say it, is everything. I experimented with different phrasing in different /r/ communities, to test what was effective. What I found, is that the key is to be very positive in how you phrase things, and sound extremely grateful and humble. Because you should be grateful that people are taking time out of their day to look at some random site, and give feedback. Phrases like "I would really appreciate" "look forward to hearing your thoughts" are a great way to not sound like a self promoting jerk when asking for a favor like having your site reviewed.RESULTS:As a result of promoting my site to about 10 reddit communities, I got invaluable feedback that I have since implemented, and 300 new email subscribers interested in my game, starting from literally 0. I got about 90% of my total giveaway participants from Reddit, and 85% of my Reddit visitors joined my giveaway. Yes, I said 85%. How do I know this? Because according to google analytics I got about 350 page views from Reddit, and I essentially didn't promote it anywhere else during this time. Considering the cost per click for most advertising is about 80 cents to a dollar, I'd estimate doing this got me about $400 worth of advertising for free (minus the giveaway item), and a better optimized website that generates more leads in the process. Pretty cool, for the low budget and aspiring entrepreneurs just starting out.
