‘You never know when an eruption will occur’: A veteran activist on Jena 6 and beyond

This December marks 18 years since the start of the case of the Jena 6 — Robert Bailey, Mychal Bell, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, Jesse Ray Beard, and Theo Shaw. 

These six Black teenagers from the town of Jena, Louisiana, were initially charged with attempted second-degree murder of a white classmate after a series of white supremacist events at their high school. Following mass resistance, their charges were reduced to still-serious aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. The movement ultimately got all charges against the six dropped to misdemeanor battery. All were free by 2009. 

Below is part one of a recent interview on the legacy of Jena with Larry Hales, a Black social worker who participated in the Jena 6 solidarity movement in Denver and other cities. We have also republished three pieces Hales wrote on the Jena 6 in 2007-08.

When you’re very small, running barefoot through damp grass on a summer evening, honeysuckle’s scent beckons like fireflies. It’s an alluring smell that, on the scale of things that will someday make you weep with longing, is somewhere between a magnolia blossom and your mother’s best perfume.

First, you pull off a creamy white or pale yellow flower. Then you hold it with the green base up. You carefully tug off the little green cap and draw out the single thread of the stamen. If you’re lucky and the fairies are with you, you’ll be rewarded with a drop of nectar, a small sip of sweetness, hanging on the end of the thread.

It’s a joy best savored by the young and patient, those with mouths so small and taste buds so fresh that the little drop seems as big and sweet as a Nik-L-Nip, those wax bottles of colored sugar syrup.

It’s like God loved Southern children so much, he draped the woods with a candy counter, free for the taking, proof that life will always be delicious and full of promise.

And then, inevitably, we grow up. As we get larger, tiny pleasures like honeysuckle blossoms don’t seem like such a big deal anymore. We get lives and yard work and mortgages, and we discover that not everything lovely is carefree.

The honeysuckle that festoons our woods is Japanese honeysuckle, and it’s an outsider here, an invader that pushed its way in, like kudzu and wisteria, those other vines that came from the outside and stayed to color the Southern landscape. Honeysuckle is not supposed to be here. It’s just another visitor that dropped by and liked it here too much to leave.

This rampant vine, first brought from its native Japan to U.S. shores on Long Island, New York in 1806, absolutely loves the Eastern climate. Propagating by berries spread by birds as well as running rhizomes, it proceeded to conquer just about all of the woodlands, roadsides, wetlands, and disturbed areas east of the Mississippi River. It invaded Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri too.

Like most vines, Japanese honeysuckle is programmed to grow and spread and never stop. If it has nothing to climb, it creeps along the ground until it does. When it does, it twines around it until it reaches the top and then starts looking for something else to climb. It will readily reach the top of a 100-foot-tall tree. If it twines around a young tree, it can literally strangle it to death. As it travels from tree to tree in the woods, it forms impenetrable thickets.

There are some uses and benefits to honeysuckle though. Mainly regarded in traditional Chinese medicine, the Honeysuckle has long been used as a natural home remedy to treat inflammation, stomach upset, upper respiratory infections, fever and more.

James Forten (September 2, 1766 – March 4, 1842) was an African American abolitionist and wealthy businessman in Philadelphia. Born free in the city, he became a sailmaker after the Revolutionary War. He became the foreman and bought the sail loft when his boss retired. Based on the equipment he had developed, he established a highly profitable business. It was located on the busy waterfront of the Delaware River, in an area now called Penn’s Landing.

He used his wealth and social standing to work for civil rights for African Americans in both the city and nationwide. He opposed the colonization movements, particularly that of the American Colonization Society. He affirmed Americans’ claim to a stake in the US. He persuaded William Lloyd Garrison to adopt an anti-colonization position and helped fund his newspaper The Liberator, frequently publishing letters on public issues. He became vice-president of the biracial American Anti-Slavery Society and worked for the national abolition of slavery. His large family was devoted to these causes, and two daughters married the mixed-race Purvis brothers, who used their wealth as leaders for abolition.

When he returned to Philadelphia, he became apprenticed to sail-maker Robert Bridges, his father’s former employer, and a family friend. He learned quickly in the sail loft. This was where the large ship sails were cut and sewn. Before long, the young man was promoted to foreman.

At Bridges’ retirement in 1798, he bought the sail loft. By developing a tool to help maneuver the large sails, by 1810, he had built up one of the most successful sail lofts in Philadelphia. He created the conditions he worked for in society, employing both African American and white workers. Because of his business acumen, he became one of the wealthiest Philadelphians in the city. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

A day with friends!

Over the last 4 years, each year, I have been getting like minded people together and organizing Xperiences that are "in demand", that are a "need of the hour" and that are "unique" in some sense or the other.

With our sedentary lifestyles, we all crave for that opportunity to break free and perhaps be amidst nature.

It's monsoon time and what better than going on a monsoon trek this season!

A month back, some of us friends got together and we decided to plan one such Xperience for friends/acquaintances. We zeroed in on #KorigadFort as our destination and started the planning.

While Korigad is a relatively easy trek, given that it was monsoon plus the fact that not everyone would have the physical endurance to complete the trek, we decided to limit how many people could join us.

We gathered ~80 people and were ON to go on this Trek - a first for many of them who joined us!

When we started our journey yesterday, the one thing that each one of us prayed for was rains - and the rain gods heard us! It was misty, rainy, foggy, and everything else that we were expecting!

A day that many of the people were waiting for months and ah, what a day it was with friends, with conversations, great food and amidst nature - the fresh air on top of the fort was to perhaps settle there for centuries to come!

A huge shout out to Abhay, Chetan, Faheem, Manasi, Rohit, Rajith, Rohan, PURVI, Piyusha, Sangeeta, Shivani for organizing this and giving us yet another Xperience to remember!

The Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage was the first American abolition society. It was founded on April 14, 1775, in Philadelphia and held four meetings. Seventeen of the 24 men who attended initial meetings of the Society were Quakers, that is, members of the Religious Society of Friends, a branch of Christianity notable in the early history of Pennsylvania.

It was reorganized in 1784 as the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery and for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, (better known as the Pennsylvania Abolition Society) and was incorporated in 1789.

Benjamin Franklin was elected as the organization’s president. The Society asked him to bring the matter of slavery to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He petitioned Congress in 1790 to ban slavery.

The Society, which had members and leaders of both races, became a model for anti-slavery organizations in other states during the antebellum years. Prominent African-American members included Robert Purvis, who was admitted in 1842 as the Society’s first African American member.

In 1984 when the Society was revived, a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker was placed on Philadelphia’s Front Street below Chestnut Street, at the site of its original offices.

The Pennsylvania Abolition Society still exists, dedicated to the cause of combating racism. The oldest abolitionist organization in the US, since the late twentieth century, has worked to improve issues of criminal justice and the over-representation of African Americans in prison, reduce harsh sentencing laws, and improve economic and environmental justice. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
