Do you like sexy ghosts?
(Yes, you do. This is Tumblr.)
So, I've got like this job actually writing books and trying to get people to buy them. But right now, I'm giving one away for free! (I'm like the anti-Aziraphale here.)
It's a ghost romance set in late 19th century Ireland, with a curse, a heroine with OCD and related social anxiety, and a total sweetheart of a ghost hero. They spend the whole story being cute together and helping one another. A greedy capitalist is the villain. It's lots of awww with a dash of spooky.

It's going out to my newsletter subscribers tomorrow, and you can sign up here: catsteinbooks.com/newsletter
(Secret tip: Obviously, I hope you'll stick around and check out my books and whatever, but there's not actually any penalty for signing up, getting the book, and unsubscribing.)

All twelve chapters of The Patience of Hope have now been released! I ended it a day later than planned because I had to take one of the days off, but with the last chapter having just been posted, that wraps up this story, which clocks in at 18,280 words and tips into novella land. If you like explicitly autistic characters, hopeful themes and surety of Christian love, you might like this story.
A couple of acknowledgements - thanks to both @graycedelfin and @stealingmyplaceinthesun, who helped me with betareading. Thanks also to the @inklings-challenge; I wouldn't have written this story without the Christmas challenge it's for.
I love this story so much, and I'm delighted to share it with y'all, even though it's far from its best, having had perhaps not enough time to marinate before I shared it. I hope to edit it in future.
Each chapter was set one day after the previous one. Don't squint too hard at the worldbuilding, either, because it was sort of set in the present time but also sort of not really.
Chapter one: Nativity was for Christmas day itself. Chapter two: Stephen introduced a character and plotline that featured heavily in the rest of the story. In chapter three: John, there was a somewhat difficult conversation, and a kind-of-sort-of cliffhanger. Chapter four: Innocents looked more at how the results of that conversation were going to affect Patience. Next up, chapter five: Shepherds brought a surprising situation into the mix. Chapter six: Joseph had a spot of conflict, as well as much-needed reassurance for Patience. Chapter seven: Magi brought more fluff, as well as a necessary conversation. Chapter eight: David showed one of Patience's favourite things, knitting for people. Chapter nine: Baptism was shorter than I would have liked, and I intend to revise to add another scene at a later date, but it's okay as it is. Chapter ten: James briefly brought back a character sidelined in an earlier chapter. In chapter eleven: Mysteries, her father returned to take care of Patience and try to clarify the situation she was in. Finally, the chapter that just released (chapter twelve: Epiphany) contained a hard conversation, surrounded by discussions of Bible verses and wordplay, and closed the story on a hopeful note.
Thanks for reading, and please reblog this post, and please tell me what you think of the story! Also see the most recent story on this post (or one of my most recent tumblr posts), for a short story from Rhona's POV during the events of Patience, Changing, "Patience in Recovery"!

Six Sentence Sunday — Midnight
Every Sunday I share Six Sentences from one of my books or current WIP This excerpt comes from the free New Year’s themed novella where four guys scheme to get the midnight kiss from Layla. “Now, I believe the best way to show who is the most deserving of the New Year’s kiss is with a—”“We don’t have time for a fivesome,” Calvin wrongly insisted. “A contest,” I finished with, and snapped my…

Free Resources for Writers Masterpost
created October 10th 2024.
Will update every now and then, so click on the original/source post to see any updates that may be added in the future!
Free writing programs (offline):
LibreOffice, Free and Open Source.
FocusWriter, Free and Open Source (?)
Free Writing programs (Online; cross-platform)
4TheWords, (free tier with paid upgrades available) Tracks your daily word count and rewards for daily streaks. 10/10 recommend!
Google docs (Free, requires Google Account.)
Community Writing hubs:
4TheWords (I'm fairly certain the multiplayer option includes this)
Ohwrite - Word Springs with friends.
Online Goal Trackers:
Trackbear word goal tracker
Pacemaker goal planner
Of all of the above links, my absolute champion here is Libreoffice for pure functionality, and for fun and writing goals, 4TheWords!
It is like google docs in that you are writing on an online platform that autosaves your work (don't forget to give it a few seconds to save changes before clicking away from it), but it also means you can write on your desktop or mobile phone while on the go;
it keeps track of your words written for the day, keeps track of daily writing streaks, and makes it easy and fun to stay focused on completing word goals of various levels in one sitting, by "battling" monsters that have different word goals in a time limit.
once you reach that word goal, you've successfully defeated the monster, and earn loot to level up your character if you're interested in the RPG aspect of the site, otherwise, you can use it to simply write and keep to small, steady goals!

I hate when authors are like "yeah this is pretty short, sorry :\" like bitch that's 1,500. That's a solid chapter. you don't have to write 10k per chapter.
Once someone gave me some unsolicited advice to "write 1k a day so you get 7k by the end of the week" I write 500-ish words on a good day sir who are you talking to?

Oh, and for those not participating in Ominous October (see my pinned post for details), does anyone have any suggestions for ways people can begin planning/outlining their Novella November projects?
Does anyone have some Outline templates they would like to share ?
I always just.... winged it in the past lol, but I *am* doing some more in-depth planning this time.
An outline at its most basic should at least consist of :
Who are the characters?
Where and when is it set?
What is the Big Problem/Plot of the story?
Some additional details you can fill in from there:
Who is your main character? What kind of personality, abilities, and flaws do they have? What do they look like? Sound like?
If there are two or more main characters, how are they connected to the Plot?
If there are two or more main character POVs, do the additional perspectives bring something new and interesting to the story?
What are your characters motivations? Do these motivations change over time?
What kind of Conflicts do your character(s) face?
What kind of setting is your story set in, and how does that influence your characters and the story?
If you have thought of one, what do you *want* the main Theme of your story to be?
How do you plan on including this theme in your work?
What will start your Character(s) on their journey in the plot?
How will they have changed by the time you reach the middle of the book?
What is the climax of the work going to be?
How are the events of the book resolved?
Are all of the strings tied up for a standalone, or are there still pieces left unraveled, for a sequel to explore, or simply for an open-ending, intended to invite speculation from the audience?

Novella November: 5
World Building One Shot
Hi friends! This is a one shot I just did for some world building. This was supposed to be a super small easy light hearted project but somehow I got carried away and it turned into this. 💙
World Building for Faelin and Manu:
This is in a magical world where some people posses the ability to feel and control Rakka, a magical essence similar to Mako in Final Fantasy. This magical essence can be seen and controlled by some individuals who either:
- Come from a bloodline descending from a people whose blood was filled with more Rakka than other humans. (Vaali)
- Are individuals that Rakka seemingly manifested in randomly. (Kariku)
- Had it gifted by the earth itself, usually through a strong act in service to the earth, balance, or harmony. (Vakkerin)
Vaali: This is a people who are said to have descended from the first people of the earth. They were born from the oceans, spreading out across the land. Their paths across the region left many rivers, and their tenderness for the animals created rich forests. There’s many stories about how the Vaali could communicate, influence, and become one with the spirits of the forest and river. Pure Vaali are totally extinct, and are now (to some) considered a mere myth, despite Vaali bloodlines having Rakka every few generations.
Kariku: Around every century, a small group of Kariku emerge. No one really understands why or how they are born with Rakka, but it isn’t always apparent until adolescence. There has only been one rare instance where a Kariku was able to control and use the Rakka since birth.
Vakkerin: These are people who have done a great service to the forest, rivers, spirits, and earth. They have been given the ability to channel their devotion and love for the earth into understanding Rakka, and are trained by the spirits to learn how to use it. Being given Rakka is uncommon and considered one of the highest honors. A ritual is held when one has shown their love and proves their loyalty to receive this gift. This ritual and the act of gaining Rakka is considered a rebirth.
Juma (YOO-mah)
Juma is an ancient planet and is the closest planet to the moon in their solar system, Kuuhan. (KOO-ahn) Stories from the Vaali tell that Kuuhan was the heart of the Juma, ripped out of the planet by the sun.
Juma has been one of the lushest planets in the galaxy, until a small group of aliens settled long, long ago. Juma was welcoming, but the aliens did not find her hospitality enough. They took Juma as their own, as they sought out a new planet due to the destruction they have dealt on their own. They domesticated or ate the animals rather than befriending them, stripping down the forests for their greed, and disrespected the spirits, warding them off with their own curses. They became known among the Vaali as Rakksa.
The Vaali did their best to avoid war with the Rakksa, but this didn’t last long. The Vaali tried to speak with the Raaksa, to know them, their language, and their home. The Vaali thought maybe it was possible to befriend the Raaksa, and invite them to live with Juma and the blessings of this world. But the Raaksa didn’t want to live on Juma for love and harmony, their love and values still rested on those they had in their old home: Resources. Riches. Renown.
The Vaali held hope for a few more years that the Rakksa would grow homesick. The Vaali couldn’t imagine what life could ever be if it wasn’t Juma, it would be only natural that the Rakksa would return home as well; damaged as it was, it’s still home. But the Rakksa only grew in numbers. They would bring loud ships that exhumed stink, thick air, and crushed whatever laid beneath it. The Vaali’s hope were crushed when the Rakksa began dumping waste and toxins into the rivers, the soil, and burning the tree flesh. They stabbed the mountains, dismembered the earth, and cast dark fumes into the sky.
Juma couldn’t take this anymore. She ached, and her people could not stop the Raaksa. Juma began to cry. Water turned to fire, burning the Rakksa as they bathed and drank. Shards of crystals and space rock shot down from the sky, piercing the Rakksa’s heaviest ships and domes. Vines and stalks communed with ivy, and spat poison onto the Rakksa, entangling them with their arms. The earth crumbled beneath Rakksa settlements, creating caverns that filled with fire water.
The spirits retreated far into the earth to find safety from the slaughter, knowing they’d be protected and safe in Juma’s stomach, taking the Vaali with them.
Juma was still hurt. She was hurt from the destruction of the Rakksa, and the destruction she caused because of them. Juma felt betrayed, by the universe, and by herself. Juma cried again, but was no longer angry. Her tears filled the caverns, solidifying pools of her fire tears into solid black rock. Her tears washed the poison off the skin of the Rakksa’s corpses. Water fell from the cracks of the mountains, filling up the holes in the earth. Juma cried for days.
When Juma could cry no more, she finally looked at herself. The world was rid of the Raaksa’s dirt, but their presence and destruction was undoable. Juma tried to rid herself of their hate. If it were not for the spirits and the Vaali resting in her stomach, she may have destroyed herself. She released her children back into their world, but they could feel her grief and see her destruction all around them.
The Vaali got to work, picking up after Juma. They tried to call some of the spirits out of Juma’s stomach, but many did not want to return to see the remains of what was home. The Vaali and woken spirits worked hard every day to clean and heal Juma, as she loved and cared for them for all of their lives, and will continue to beyond what’s known.
Some Vaali found the remains of the Raaksa’s tools and knowledge, and were turned by their curious nature. This caused another conflict on Juma; the Vaali who were devoted to Juma, and the Vaali who now held ideas for a future like the Rakksa.
If you read this far, hello! Thanks! 💙
I didn’t finish it but I met 1k words for today and I started to get too hooked on small details. I’ll probably come back to it, since there’s a few details that I think need some changing. But let me know what you think!
Thank you! Happy writing! 💙🪼
