Photo: Stonewall Inn, 1969, by the ultimate chronicler of New York’s downtown scene in that period, Fred W McDarrah, (c) the Estate of Fred W McDarrah.
This photo’s iIncluded in McDarrah’s photographic essay book PRIDE: photographs after Stonewall, recently back in print from OR books, with forwards by Hilton Als and Allen Ginsberg. From Allen’s forward:
“Think of the historic importance of coming out of the closet! Stonewall’s cry echoed round the world! Spiritual liberation meant gay liberation also, the liberation of individual veracity against hypocrisies of church and state and age-old social sadism. A revelation of actuality in midst of mental hallucination an emotional repression. Truth against “lies age-old, age-thick”
What was the fix to begin with? Legendary gay bars owned by organized crime paid off the New York police, and if they didn’t they were closed down. Something went wrong with the payoffs at Stonewall Inn. So the customary repression of gay social life was motiv’d by hypercritical greed and sadism. As the sign says GAY PROHIBITION CORRUPTS COPS AND FEEDS MAFIA”

#Repost @gvshp_nyc (@get_repost) ・・・ On this day in 1969, master photographer Fred W. McDarrah takes this iconic image of the Stonewall Riots -- one of the very few surviving pieces of photographic evidence of three nights of disturbances which changed the course of history but which the mainstream press largely chose to ignore. Fred McDarrah was an unrivalled chronicler of downtown life and history for a half century, and we are incredibly grateful to his family for allowing us to use and share these and other amazing images he took. Go to archive.gvshp.org for more incredible Fred W. McDarrah images, and purchase a print to support GVSHP's work. See www.gvshp.org/lgbt for more information about the Stonewall Riots and LGBT history in our neighborhoods and our efforts to recognize and protect it. #stonewall #stonewallriots #civilrights #lgbthistory #lgbtlandmarks #fredwmcdarrah #christopherstreet #1969 #greenwichvillage #westvillage #historicpreservation

#pride #lgbt #lgbtq+ #lgbtrights #lgbtqrights #lgbtqjustice #lgbtqfight #lgbtqvisibility #lgbtqacceptance "I'M PROUD OF MY GAY SON", Dick Ashworth, Christopher Street Liberation Day, June 30, 1974. #Repost @lgbt_history with @repostapp ・・・ "MY NAME IS DUANE KEARNS PURYEAR. I WAS BORN ON DECEMBER 20, 1964. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AIDS ON SEPTEMBER 7, 1987 AT 4:45 PM. I WAS 22 YEARS OLD. SOMETIMES, IT MAKES ME VERY SAD. I MADE THIS PANEL MYSELF. IF YOU ARE READING IT, I AM DEAD...," The Names Project--AIDS Memorial Quilt, Washington, D.C., October 10, 1992. Photo © Fred W. McDarrah. On September 7, 1987, twenty-nine years ago today, at 4:45 P.M., Duane Kearns Puryear was diagnosed with AIDS. According to Stephanie Poole's 1998 article, "The Making of an AIDS Quilt," the process of making his own quilt panel was Duane Puryear's first act as an AIDS activist: "In creating this [panel], with needle and thread, Puryear completed the most significant reidentification possible. He identified himself as dead. Duane Puryear was sixteen when he contracted HIV. He was twenty-two when he was diagnosed with AIDS." He once said that his goal was to be "the longest living person with AIDS." In 1991, "at the age of twenty-six, he died. He had lived with HIV for ten years. During [that] time, he became an activist...he worked on an AIDS hotline...he became a lecturer. In Dallas, he founded the speakers bureau, which [became] an important part of the Dallas AIDS Resource Center." By the end of 1991, over 156,000 people in America had died of HIV/AIDS-related diseases. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #QueerHistoryMatters #HavePrideInHistory #FredWMcDarrah #DuaneKearnsPuryear #NeverAgain #NeverForget #WeRemember
