Something that people tend to ask me after they visit my blog and see *gestures wildly* is "what's so compelling about the Karluk in general and Fred Maurer in particular?"

The answer? Bestie, I wish I knew.

Sometimes the universe randomly assigns you a character that will consume you, and that's exactly what happened to me a few years ago. At the time, the only polar subject I cared about was the Franklin Expedition. I was scrolling through a historic photo colorization account on insta and I came across a picture of Fred. I read the caption, learned that he was from a city very near where I grew up and where I still have family connections, learned that he survived one ill-fated polar expedition only to die on another, and that was it- I was hooked.

The bitter irony of this is that, objectively speaking, he isn't that interesting or that compelling. He is endlessly fascinating to me because I'm insane, but the more I learn about his personal life, the more boring he becomes.

Anyway, here's to you, Fred, the boring man I was assigned. May I always find joy in this situation.

I know I said I was only going to be talking about musical masterpiece Swept Away today, but I lied because I also read an insane-ish interview that Fred Maurer gave to an Akron newspaper in 1920 between the Karluk and Wrangel Island expeditions!
