ok finally decided to look into the outfits seen in al be back cuz i wanted to find out who they were referencing.

to preface, the boys all reference different genres of music obviously, it is the music episode, raph is soul, leo is glam rock, donnie is techno, and mikey is rap.

raph's is definitely a nod to james brown, who was like. THE biggest name in soul. he's been called the "godfather of soul."

donnie's is a reference to daft punk, specifically guy-manuel de homem-christo. these first 2 were on the fandom wiki, which took out like all the guess work lmao

i asked my mom about this one and she said mikey's is most likely a reference to run dmc or ll cool j. after looking at both, i'm gonna say run dmc, it's the adidas tracksuit/hat combo.

leo's i'm like, 75% sure is a reference to david bowie??? i'm not really sure. with glam rock outifts being as campy as they are, it could be anyone. i don't think the team would've picked like super obscure bands to reference tho, and he's giving david bowie energy. so idk

Sir Dr. Brian Harold May CBE, astrophysicist and guitar god of Queen, is half Scottish, thanks to his mum. I have very lately been trying to picture Brian in a kilt.

Unless there are secret pictures somewhere that Brian has surpressed -- which is entirely possible -- he has never worn a kilt.

Bonus points to answer in the tags: If he *had* worn a kilt, would he have inevitably worn clogs as well, or some other footwear?

the gross mischaracterisation of Steve Harrington's music taste is an unbearable crime goddamnit, this man has never even heard a pop song in his life! All the music he plays is either rock, new wave or indie music, we see this at his party and so the music playing in his car (which you can find lists of on what-song and similar sites).

someone on reddit noticed Steve is also wearing an outfit identical to one Freddie Mercury wore the same year season 4 is set. In fact, Steve regularly dresses similarly to Freddie Mercury, the more I look the more I see there's definitely influences of Freddie's casual fashion (not his show looks) in Steve's style; some of them, like the yellow jumper look the redditor noticed, are almost like for like. Why is this unusual? Maybe because Queen had tanked in America at the time, America's radio stations found them insulting in fact, so it's a big deal that Steve had Queen playing in his car, it means it wasn't on the radio by chance... he owned a copy himself

I'll have to rewatch but I'm pretty sure the only times Steve has mainstream 80s disco, dance or synth pop anywhere near him it's either someone else's party he's a guest at, and therefore has no say in the music, or he's referencing it to make fun of it (ie Tammy Thompson, and even then it was still pop rock).

Steve is a rock, by the looks of it mostly British bands too, I wouldn't be surprised if he knows The Clash just as well as Jonathan does and it's time people realize that and respect it

Here's Freddie in perhaps my all-time fave outfit of his, his cat vest. Freddie's friend Donald Mackenzie commissioned this hand-painted vest for Freddie, based on photos of his beloved cats.

Freddie was born on 5 September 1946. He passed away from AIDS-related illness at age 45. He would have been 78 today.
