Some things that Morse doesn't know about Thursday in s9 of Endeavour (and may in fact never find out).
(Spoilers behind the cut, also CW references to child abuse, alcoholism, violence, and a mention of elder abuse.)
that Thursday taking the job in Carshall was Bright's idea, not Thursday's, and that Thursday needed to be talked into it by Bright specifically because he knew he'd be leaving Morse behind and was unhappy about this for both their sakes. (Honestly I adore Bright and I think he was right to do this, and right in gently encouraging Thursday in s8 to let Morse move on and grow away from them all, but it is still an important distinction!)
that Thursday missed him achingly when he was away (although I think that scene late in 9.1 makes it clear that Thursday would have told him if he'd thought Morse could cope with it... ;-)).
that Sam had a dishonorable discharge, which the family are covering up not because they're ashamed of him, but because they want to protect him.
the full extent of how unwell Sam is and how much this is manifesting in behavioural problems (although Morse has noticed a fair amount of this and knows something is extremely up, but the full degree of it, and how badly it's affecting the whole family? I don't know). Thus, the extent of exactly how desperately worried Thursday is.
that Thursday is a child abuse survivor, specifically of physical abuse from an alcoholic, and that this is his first time in adulthood sharing his home with an angry alcoholic who is (now Thursday is older and Sam in something like his prime, alcohol aside) physically stronger than he is.
(the punch at Strange's stag do is so much more upsetting in that context, I note, as is Thursday's instinctive placation. There's paternal kindness and loyalty and generosity in that moment, but I think there's an old trauma reaction too; it read to me awfully like an emotional flashback. It is extremely fortunate that Sam is very decent indeed deep down, seems shocked by his own action, and is doing better by the end of the episode. Sam is one of two men (the other being Morse) that I would not trust Thursday to even try to defend himself against.)
that Thursday finally gave into Lott's blackmail over Blenheim Vale at the point that Morse's life was threatened. When he talks about the pressures via "family"... he meant Morse, not just Win, Joan, Sam, Charlie, and (arguably) Strange. There were a range of threats, but that seems to have been the final straw, especially as it was the most explicit.
the phone call Thursday got from Ronnie Box trying to encourage him to get out of the situation (and Thursday refusing; he may have taken a while to talk into the new Blenheim Vale investigation but he wasn't going to abandon it once committed until it was that or let people he loved get killed; when the threat was only against himself, nah, nothing doing).
that Lott tried to kill Charlie, and Thursday still doesn't know where Charlie is; what Charlie's done to Thursday is horrible but still, yikes.
that Thursday was dreadfully worried about Morse at the wedding (that's Word of Roger, rather than in the script, mind you, but it would be extremely out of character if he hadn't been).
Morse does go through an awful lot in series 9, but the sheer fricking trauma conga line of Thursday's life in that series, all while he's trying to pretend everything's just fine... ouch.
None of it justifies Thursday's serious fuck-ups and wrongs in 9.3 of course! But I think it's absolutely crucial not to see Thursday entirely through Morse's eyes at any point in s9, because there's such a lot that Morse doesn't know, and for the first time Morse is liable to be far too harsh on his old mentor, not too gentle on him. Thursday is not okay at any point in series 9, and seems to spend the whole of 9.3 breaking down.
(I hope it goes without saying that I am very much of the opinion that Thursday should have told Morse at least some of all this!! But I find it very understandable that he didn't, especially as mostly he wasn't protecting himself, but Sam. Gaaaaah it's all so tragic!)
(Yep, I know I keep saying this, but I actually would find it deeply out of character for both Shaun Evans' Morse and John Thaw's Morse to reject Thursday and even his memory entirely for what happened. Even with the v limited data he knows. Protecting him by never talking about him to anybody while sharing a detailed (if perhaps coded) correspondence with him for the rest of the time they're both alive? Infinitely more likely. And can't you just see Thaw's Morse being that leeetle bit silently smug about still being closer to Strange's father-in-law (or possibly ex-father-in-law) than he is. ;-) )

Tottenham leave it late to see off Wycombe in FA Cup
New Post has been published on https://newsprofixpro.com/moxie/2021/01/27/tottenham-leave-it-late-to-see-off-wycombe-in-fa-cup/
Tottenham leave it late to see off Wycombe in FA Cup
Jose Mourinho insists Tottenham will “not give up any competition” after late goals from Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele ensured Spurs overcame a scare against a spirited Wycombe side to reach the FA Cup fifth round.
Wycombe, bottom of the Championship, had stunned their Premier League opponents when Fred Onyedinma slotted in the opener midway through the first half.
But Gareth Bale marked a rare start with the equaliser just before half-time, hooking in Lucas Moura’s cross.
Tottenham upped the pressure in the second half, but Wycombe repelled numerous attacks as they looked set to take the game to extra time.
However, with Mourinho having sent on key players Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Ndombele, the away side’s quality eventually told as Winks curled home to give Spurs the lead with four minutes to go.
Ndombele ensured there would be no late drama when he finished from close range and then stabbed home a fourth in injury time to set Tottenham up with a fifth-round tie at Everton.
Spurs have already reached the final of the Carabao Cup and are also in the knockout stage of the Europa League.
They also host Liverpool in the Premier League on Thursday and Mourinho said not choosing to rest Kane, Son and Ndombele for that fixture highlighted his determination to win in every competition they play in.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Even when we had to play four matches in one week and people thought we were going to give away Europa League or Carabao Cup we didn’t. We fought. Today we brought the whole squad – only Hugo Lloris stayed at home. We are going to fight.
“We want to keep going. February we have to play three competitions because FA Cup and then comes Europa League. Of course it will be very hard but we have to try.”
Who is playing who in the FA Cup fifth round?
How has Ndombele gone from Spurs outcast to key player?
Ndombele continues Spurs revival
Ndombele came off the bench to score twice late on
There were times last season when Ndombele appeared to be heading for the Tottenham exit as he struggled to make an impression following his move to Spurs for a club record £53.8m in the summer of 2019.
However, he is proving to be one of Spurs’ best players this season – arguably as crucial as Kane and Son – and he once again showed his quality with his late cameo.
His first goal allowed Tottenham to breathe easy but his second was one of real quality, confusing the Wycombe defence with superb footwork before firing in at the near post.
It was yet another piece of inventive play from the France midfielder, who scored a brilliant hooked finish against Sheffield United on 17 January.
Ndombele has now scored four goals in his past six appearances for Spurs, having hit four in his 48 games prior to that, underlining his impressive revival at the club.
“He is very creative,” added Mourinho. “He is one of those players that can break the balance.
“They tried to get him man against man but he can break that – plus on top of that he can score a goal for us.”
‘I am flattered they had to put some big names on’
Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth on BT Sport: “The scoreline is probably not a reflection of the game although they were fantastic at the end – I am flattered they had to put some big names on to get in front.
“We looked tired. We have given everything and there is no disgrace from our boys, really proud – we will take a lot of heart from this.
“We go again, it’s not going to be the FA Cup but I am determined to stay in the Championship.”
Spurs’ cup record continues – the stats
Tottenham have progressed from 21 of their past 22 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division.
Wycombe have lost 15 of their 26 games in all competitions this season, three more than they did in 43 matches last season.
There were just 72 seconds between Harry Winks giving Tottenham the lead and Tanguy Ndombele making it 3-1.
Fred Onyedinma has scored in back-to-back appearances for Wycombe in all competitions (both in the FA Cup), having scored in none of his first 24 games this season.
Gareth Bale has been involved in nine goals in his past six starts in the FA Cup for Tottenham (four goals, five assists), with his equalising goal tonight his first in the competition in 2,942 days since netting vs Coventry in January 2013.
Harry Winks has scored two goals in his past nine games for Tottenham in all competitions, as many as he had in his first 151 appearances for the club.
Lucas Moura has been involved in 10 goals in 12 FA Cup starts (four goals, six assists), more than any other Spurs player since his debut for the club in the competition in February 2018.
Tanguy Ndombele became the first substitute to score twice in a match for Tottenham since Roman Pavlyuchenko against Birmingham in May 2011.

Newcastle vs Man Utd LIVE: Confirmed line-ups and Premier League updates at St James’ Park | Football | Sport
Newcastle vs Man Utd LIVE: Team news and Premier League updates from St James’ Park (Image: Getty)
Man Utd vs Newcastle – LIVE
Newcastle could escape relegation zone with a win
Man Utd could rise to 7th with victory
Newcastle: Dubravka; Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Clark, Willems; Longstaff, Longstaff, Saint-Maximin; Joelinton, Almiron
Man Utd: De Gea; Dalot, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young; Fred, McTominay; Andreas, Mata, James; Rashford
4.10pm: Update regarding the United team – Lindelof is injured, hence his absence from the squad. Solskjaer was fearful of the plastic pitch on which they played against AZ Alkmaar and it ostensibly caused the centre-back an injury.
“It was the pitch [with Lindelof], and it was his back that completely locked in the last couple of minutes and he couldn’t walk,” Solskjaer said just now. “We hoped he would recover and he travelled with us but he couldn’t play. He’ll need a little week off, I think.
“Jesse and Victor got injuries on Thursday night so that’s just part and parcel of this game. Axel has come in at centre back and Diogo has been waiting to play for a while now so we’ll see some more young lads.”

4.05pm: There has been a lot of bad statistical reading for both sets of fans this season. And guess what? Here’s more! Send your thanks to those at Opta for collating…
Newcastle have won three of their last 31 Premier League games against Manchester United (W3 D7 L21), losing both matches during the 2018-19 campaign
Only against Arsenal (29) have Newcastle lost more Premier League games than they have against Manchester United (28)
Manchester United are winless in their last seven away league games (D3 L4) – they last had a longer run without a win on the road in the top-flight between February and September 1989 (11 games)
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has managed more Premier League games against Man Utd without winning (21 – W0 D5 L16) than any manager has against an opponent in the competition’s history

3.55pm: Steve Bruce spoke highly of his former club amid their bad spell, and is relishing the prime 4.30pm slot.
“They might not be the Man United of the past but they’ve still got some very good players,” Bruce said.
“We are going to have to be at our best and a lot better than we were last week. I am hoping we show a response to the supporters because we let everyone down last week.
“It is a wonderful time to play them because it will be a full house, live on the TV. If ever we needed to bounce back against anybody, what better way than against them.”
3.50pm: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes it is vital his side win at St James’ Park to restore the good feeling around Carrington.
“For us to get a result [at Newcastle] is vital now. I think it will change the mood,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
“The fans are great I have to say. It’s easy to be positive when I see them, they have been very positive with me. They see what you are doing and they keep going.
“We want to pay them back for their loyalty and support by getting better results and better performances. I can assure them we are working hard to do so.”

3.40pm: So it’s three changes for United from their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Monday, with Lindelof, Pogba and Lingard making way for Dalot, Fred and Mata.
Intriguingly Solskjaer has left Lindelof out of the squad, perhaps unimpressed by the Swede’s performances so far this campaign alongside Maguire. Pogba and Lingard’s absences were expected and it seems Wan-Bissaka has still not recovered from tonsillitis.
As for Newcastle, Steve Bruce makes five changes from the side that lost 5-0 to Leicester last weekend. He has reverted to a 5-3-2 formation this week which sees an extra centre-half start in Clark, with Willems and Yedlin also coming back into the side.
The younger Longstaff, Matty, makes his Premier League debut alongside his brother, and Saint-Maximin makes his first start.
3.30pm: The line-ups are in…
Man Utd: De Gea; Dalot, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young; Fred, McTominay; Andreas, Mata, James; Rashford.
Subs: Romero, Rojo, Williams, Matic, Gomes, Chong, Greenwood.
Newcastle: Dubravka; Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Clark, Willems; Longstaff, Longstaff, Saint-Maximin; Joelinton, Almiron.
Subs: Darlow, Krafth, Dummett, Shelvey, Atsu, Gayle, Carroll.

3.25pm: Ladies and gentlemen, we will bring you team news shortly, as kick-off approaches.
In the meantime, here is what United stalwart Scott McTominay had to say before the meeting. He has become one of Solskjaer’s most trusted players this season – and echoes his manager’s upbeat nature amid the storm.
“Other than the West Ham game, it’s been [a case of] very, very fine margins,” he told United’s in-house media team. “In a lot of the games we’ve played, I think we’ve been 1-0 up at half-time.
“For us it’s time to really nail down why we’re conceding after half-time and structurally we have to do more as a group and communicate more on the pitch and things like that. We have to reflect on all our performances and going into the international break it’s important we pick up a big three points away from home.”

WELCOME, HA’WAY…
To live coverage of the bottom-half Premier League clash between Newcastle and Manchester United – we haven’t said that often in the past.
Both sides head into the game in desperate need of a win after dismal starts to the campaign, with three wins and 13 goals between them in 14 games.
While Steve Bruce publicly admitted he can’t play in the attacking manner he wishes with his squad, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems like a man in denial as he smiles his way through early-season criticism.
We cannot promise entertainment on the field but, whatever the result, the fallout will be captivating.

Man Utd v Leeds: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says fan trouble will not be an issue

Man Utd v Leeds: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says fan trouble will not be an issue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Manchester United players during a training session in Perth
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says fan disorder will not “be an issue” at Wednesday’s pre-season match against rivals Leeds in Perth.
A huge number of fans from both clubs are in the city for the game, which is expected to draw a near 60,000-capacity crowd – though no trouble has occurred.
Solskjaer was asked if the clubs’ fierce rivalrycould lead to problems.
“If you make the effort to come here and support your team, football is the reason you are here,” he said.
Fixtures between the two sides in England have traditionally required a heavy police presence.
There have been a couple of stand-offs between small groups of supporters in different locations in the Australian city, but no actual clashes.
The two clubs have not met for eight years – they last faced each other in a League Cup match in 2011. That game was marred by trouble, with two police officers injured and dozens of arrests made.
Solskjaer said left-back Luke Shaw has recovered from a slight hamstring injury that led to him being substituted in Saturday’s opening pre-season game against Perth Glory, and added that he was unlikely to risk the defender against Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship promotion hopefuls.
The Norwegian boss also spoke about his selection issues in central defence.
United are keen to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester, although the two clubs are still apart in their valuation of the 26-year-old England international.
They already have five senior centre-backs – Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo – at the club on contracts that could run to at least 2022. In addition, Axel Tuanzebe has impressed in pre-season after playing a key role in Aston Villa’s return to the Premier League while on loan last term.
“Axel has a great chance of staying here and playing,” said Solskjaer. “He has proved he can play at that level and has come back strong and focused.
“Of course there is a limit of players. Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has to fight to get back in – but he’s one of the exciting players I can’t wait to see more of.”
Solskjaer also confirmed three more senior players – goalkeeper Dean Henderson, defender Matteo Darmian and midfielder Fred – will join the squad when they fly to Singapore on Thursday before a match against Inter Milan 48 hours later.

The operation was interrupted when a van used by a spy cell was crushed by masonry falling from a damaged building, killing one man, it is claimed. Benyamin Mizrahi, 23, the Israeli man who died in the damaged van, was found to have five passports on his person, the Southland Times newspaper reported. Three surviving Israelis who were in the van with Mr Mizrahi fled New Zealand within 12 hours, making their way back to Israel. They reportedly paused only to take photographs of the crushed van and return the dead man’s Israeli passport to officials from their embassy. The Southland Times also said the police national computer was being audited because of concerns it had been hacked into. Related Articles Neutral New Zealand passports highly prized by overseas intelligence 20 Jul 2011 Earthquake 'unearthed spy ring' 20 Jul 2011 There were fears that other Israeli operatives, in the city after the February 22 quake which killed 181 people, could have embedded malicious software to access intelligence information. John Key, the New Zealand prime minister, on Thursday confirmed that the government’s Security Intelligence Service had carried out an investigation but he dismissed the concerns. Speaking during a visit to the United States, Mr Key said the unusual circumstances of the incident were fully investigated and no evidence was found that the people involved were anything other than backpackers. He said his advice was that the man had only two passports, one of European origin which was found on his body, and the other which his friends had handed in to Israeli officials. Mr Key said the government took the security of New Zealand and New Zealanders “very seriously”. “The unusual circumstances which triggered the investigation was the rapid departure from the country of the three surviving members of the group of Israelis in question,” he said. “Security agencies conducted the investigation and found no evidence that the people were anything other than backpackers,” Mr Key said. In all, three Israelis died in the magnitude 6.3 earthquake. Security experts suggested agents for Mossad may have been on an identity theft “trawling” mission for information, so that the passports of unwitting citizens could be cloned. The false passports would then be used as cover during espionage activities in other parts of the world by Israeli secret agents. Fred Tulett, editor of the Southland Times, said an “extraordinary” reaction by the Israeli government in the hours after the earthquake had heightened the suspicions of New Zealand’s Security Intelligence Service. They included the fact that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, made four calls to John Key, his New Zealand counterpart, on the day of the earthquake. Shemi Tzur, Israel’s ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, travelled from his base in Australia to Christchurch, where he visited the temporary morgue set up to cope with earthquake victims. Meanwhile, Israel’s defence chief also flew to the earthquake-ravaged city. In a further move, a search and rescue team arrived in Christchurch from Israel, but the squad’s offer of help was rejected by New Zealand authorities because it did not have the necessary United Nations accreditation. Despite that rejection, members of the Israeli team were confronted by armed New Zealand officers after being discovered in the badly damaged sealed off “red zone” of the city centre, the Southland Times said. The Israeli government later sent a forensic team to help authorities identify the dead. The paper said New Zealand officials became alarmed when intelligence information was collated and it was realised that the Israeli forensic team had been given access to the police national database to help with identification work. The paper quoted an unnamed intelligence officer as saying it would take only moments for a USB drive to be inserted into a police computer terminal and loaded with a program allowing remote backdoor access to the database. A police spokesman later said: “We are confident that our data and network were not compromised during the Christchurch Earthquake response or subsequently.” Mr Tzur, the Israeli ambassador, said it was “science fiction” to believe that any Mossad agents had been involved.

New names, new faces, but what can we expect from the new season?
Media playback is not supported on this device
New faces, new teams, new hopes.
The Premier League returns on Friday as Manchester United host Leicester City in the competition’s opening game.
So what’s changed, who’s new and what can we expect?
Can anyone challenge City?
Manchester City dominated the league in 2017-18, earning more English top-flight points than any other team in history and registering more wins and scoring more goals than any other Premier League side before them.
Pep Guardiola’s City lost just seven games in all competitions last season. Liverpool were responsible for three of those defeats and Jurgen Klopp’s side look likely to be their biggest rivals for the Premier League title this season.

Having taken the game to City in a way few others were able to in 2017-18, the Reds have clearly sensed their moment, spending big to bring in four internationals – goalkeeper Alisson, midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho and forward Xherdan Shaqiri – to strengthen a squad that already has one of the most potent strike-forces in the division and a defence rejuvenated by the January capture of Virgil van Dijk.
Guardiola said after his side’s Champions League group stage games with Napoli that the Italian side were the “best team he had ever faced”, which perhaps explains why Chelsea moved to bring their boss Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Arsenal have also changed their boss (for the first time in 22 years) and Unai Emery’s side host City on the opening weekend. However, their aim will be to restore Champions League football to Emirates Stadium before they start to think about challenging a side who finished 37 points ahead of them last campaign.
Manchester United were the only other team (along with Liverpool) to beat City in the league last season, but their boss Jose Mourinho seems determined to downplay their chances of challenging, mainly because of a lack of new signings – an issue that is also affecting 2017-18’s third-placed side Tottenham.
Who are this season’s new signings?
<!–
There will be plenty of new players on show this summer – including the two most expensive goalkeepers of all time. Alisson broke Gianluigi Buffon’s long-standing record when he joined Liverpool for an initial £55.8m, rising to £66.8m, but less than a month later, Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71m – with Thiabut Courtois leaving Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid.
Riyad Mahrez left Leicester for £60m to join Manchester City, who had been expected to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho – but who joined Chelsea instead.
Liverpool did their business early in the window, while new Arsenal manager Unai Emery also brought in a new keeper – £19m Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen. He also signed Stephan Lichtsteiner, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Fulham spent £20m or more on four different players – Jean Michael Seri, Alfie Mawson, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa – the latter one of five deadline-day signings.
Manchester United signed only one likely first-team starter, midfielder Fred, despite Jose Mourinho being keen on a new centre-back.
Nine clubs broke or equalled their transfer record, including Chelsea with Kepa, City with Mahrez and Seri with Fulham. Alireza Jahanbakhsh to Brighton, Terence Kongolo to Huddersfield, Felipe Anderson to West Ham, Adama Traore to Wolves and Jefferson Lerma to Bournemouth were also club records – and Burnley equalled theirs when they signed Ben Gibson.
The Hammers, who broke their club record signing twice, spent almost £100m – bringing in Anderson for an initial £36m after Issa Diop was briefly their top signing at £22m. Arsenal pair Jack Wilshere and Lucas Perez are among their other signings.
Everton signed three players from Barcelona – Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes – as well as Richarlison and Bernard.
One team will be very familiar this season. Tottenham did not sign a single player all summer – with no first-team players leaving either.

New managers
The 20 Premier League clubs who kick off this weekend will see a surprisingly low number of new faces in the dugout – just four, in fact. And two of those have managed in the Premier League before.
Most intriguing of all will be the start of a new era at Arsenal as Emery faces the unenviable task of replacing Arsene Wenger, who left in May after 22 years in charge.[2]
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004, and are not in the Champions League this season for a second straight season.
Emery arrives after two seasons at Paris St-Germain which saw him win five major honours but still lose his job after failing to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League.
He has spent about £65m on new faces and with Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Per Mertesacker all leaving the club there has been plenty of change.
Another new manager with plenty occupying his in-tray is Sarri at Chelsea.
Chelsea seemed to take an age to continue their recent pattern and dispense with Antonio Conte a year after he led them to the title and Sarri, 59, is an interesting choice.
He won many plaudits for the style of football his Napoli team played in the last three years but that’s all he won – the Italian has yet to secure a single piece of silverware in his managerial career.
With doubts over the futures of senior players Willian, Eden Hazard and Courtois[3] – who left for Real on Thursday – clouding the club’s summer, and Manchester City winning the Community Shield comfortably last weekend, Sarri needs to get off to a fast start in the Premier League.
The other ‘new’ faces on display this weekend are Marco Silva at Everton and Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham.
<!–
Silva replaces Sam Allardyce at Everton while Pellegrini takes over West Ham after David Moyes kept them afloat last season. Pellegrini is one of only 10 managers to lift the Premier League trophy, and the only non-European, after his title win at Manchester City in 2014.
How well will he adapt to life at the Hammers?
What about the promoted teams?
Fans of West Brom, Swansea and Stoke have already seen their campaigns get under way – the trio were relegated at the end of last season, with Swansea the only ones to get off to a winning start in the Championship.[4]
But who has replaced them? Wolves stormed to the title in the second tier last season, collecting 99 points, and have added genuine star quality in Portuguese pair Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio. It’s seven years since Wolves were last in the top flight but they will be eyeing their best ever Premier League finish this season – currently 15th.
Cardiff joined Wolves in winning automatic promotion which means a return to the Premier League for Neil Warnock. Fourth officials beware.
Warnock did a brilliant job with the Bluebirds last season and has added nearly £30m of Championship talent in the form of Greg Cunningham, Bobby Reid, Josh Murphy and Alex Smithies – as well as Harry Arter on loan on deadline day. Will it be enough? They finished bottom in their only previous season in the Premier League back in 2013-14.
Play-off winners Fulham have caught the eye for a couple of years with their attractive style of play and it’s their transfer business since beating Aston Villa at Wembley[5] which has continued to demand attention, becoming the first promoted club to spend more than £100m.
As well as their four big-money signings, they signed World Cup winner Andre Schurrle on loan and also kept hold of the highly rated Ryan Sessegnon.[6]
Will we see VAR this season?
The Premier League is the only one of the top five European leagues to not have video assistant referees this season – with La Liga and Ligue 1 following on from the Bundesliga and Serie A this summer.
All Carabao Cup and FA Cup games at Premier League grounds will use VAR this season, however.
Premier League clubs voted in April not to use the technology in the top flight this season, instead agreeing to continue testing it during 2018-19.
Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore, who is set to leave his post by the end of this year, says it is “inevitable” that VAR will eventually be introduced in the top flight.
World Cup stars to watch?
Media playback is not supported on this device
Five players who started the World Cup final less than a month ago ply their trade in the Premier League, but they may not feature this weekend after only returning to training in the last few days in some cases.
Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante could start for Chelsea when they play Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon, while Paul Pogba hasn’t played for Manchester United yet in pre-season and is not expected to face Leicester on Friday night, but Spurs should have goalkeeper Hugo Lloris available against Newcastle.
Dejan Lovren – the Premier League player on the losing side for Croatia – could feature for Liverpool when they open against West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
The runs of England and Belgium to the semi-finals also mean that a whole host of Premier League names – including Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany and Romelu Lukaku – have been missing for most of their clubs’ pre-season build-up.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Manchester United: Jose Mourinho warns of 'difficult season'

Or they are investing massively like Liverpool, who are buying everything and everybody."If we don't make our team better it will be a difficult season for us."United have so far signed three players this summer - Brazil midfielder Fred for £47m, Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant. They open the Premier League season against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday.Former chief executive Peter Kenyon said on Sunday he believes Mourinho needs to find a way of "working out" his issues with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.United lack attacking intentUnited ended their preparations for the new season in uninspiring fashion, struggling to threaten Manuel Neuer's goal.Marcus Rashford's pace gave the hosts something to think about, but the Englishman was isolated for much of the game as the visitors failed to supply their forwards with any real service. Marcus Rashford returned early from his holidays to take part in United's summer preparationsWorld Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba, Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and England forward Jesse Lingard were among a number of players missing from United's pre-season fixtures. And the return of some of those established stars will only enhance the team's attacking potential. However, with speculation surrounding Anthony Martial's immediate future, and several others sitting out the club's entire pre-season, it is unclear whether United will be in a much stronger position when they open their domestic campaign against Leicester. But Mourinho's pre-match comments suggest he is still looking for reinforcements.Central defence is an area the Portuguese is reportedly interested in strengthening, but it may be that Sunday's performance will emphasise a growing concern in the final third of the pitch. Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
There have been plenty of Premier League transfers you might have missed this summer during the World Cup. So who have each team signed and sold – and who do they need to bring in?
Remember, the transfer deadline for top-flight English clubs is Thursday, 9 August this season for the first time.
All transfers correct as of 18 July 2018
Manchester City
Riyad Mahrez is Manchester City’s record signing
Position last season: champions
Transfers in: Riyad Mahrez (Leicester) £60m
Transfers out: Angus Gunn (Southampton) £13.5m, Pablo Maffeo (Stuttgart) undisclosed, Angelino (PSV) undisclosed, Ashley Smith-Brown (Plymouth) undisclosed, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts (Peterborough) undisclosed, Matt Smith (Twente) loan, Edward Francis (Almere City) loan, Manu Garcia Alonso (Toulouse) loan, Paolo Fernandes (NAC Breda) loan, Yaya Toure (released)
BBC Radio Manchester’s Andy Buckley: “City were pipped by Chelsea for Jorginho from Napoli but still have lots of midfield options. Pep Guardiola will be heartened that captain Vincent Kompany came through the World Cup unscathed and the City boss has the buying power to bring in defensive cover and an extra front-line striker if required.
“Manchester City aim to become the first club in a decade to make a successful defence of the Premier League title. It will be a much harder task this time round, though the signing of Riyad Mahrez signals their intentions.”
Manchester United
Position last season: second
Transfers in: Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk) £47m, Diogo Dalot (Porto) £19m, Lee Grant (Stoke) £1.5m
Transfers out: Daley Blind (Ajax) £14m, Sam Johnstone (West Brom) £6.5m, Joe Riley (Bradford) undisclosed, Michael Carrick (retired), Dean Henderson (Sheff Utd) loan
BBC Radio Manchester’s Bill Rice: “The arrival of Brazilian midfielder Fred gives United added steel and grit in midfield, and should allow Paul Pogba to flourish further upfield on his return from a successful World Cup, while teenage full-back Diogo Dalot’s arrival led to Daley Blind’s departure after just four Premier League starts last season.
“A commanding central defender and another hardworking wide player are the areas manager Jose Mourinho will look to strengthen, with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Chelsea’s Willian among the names in the frame.
“Don’t rule out a statement signing too, United – having opted not to pursue re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo nine years after he left the club for Spain – would surely be near the front of the queue if Gareth Bale also decides to leave Real Madrid this summer.”
Tottenham
Position last season: third
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Keanan Bennetts (Borussia Monchengladbach) undisclosed, Anton Walkes (Portsmouth) undisclosed
BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “As usual Tottenham are taking their time in the transfer market. Spurs got their biggest deals done before the World Cup by securing striker Harry Kane and manager Mauricio Pochettino to new contracts.
“There might be some re-shaping of the squad to be done if they decide to sell Belgium internationals Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld. Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko, Danny Rose and Vincent Janssen may also be departing.
“Depending on departures they require wide attacking options and cover for Harry Kane.”
Liverpool
Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri seals victory over Serbia
Position last season: fourth
Transfers in: Fabinho (Monaco) £39m, Naby Keita (RB Leipzig) £52.75m, Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City) £13m
Transfers out: Emre Can (Juventus) free, Jon Flanagan (Rangers) free, Yan Dhanda (Swansea) free, Ovie Ejaria (Rangers) loan, Adam Bogdan (Hibernian) loan, Harry Wilson (Derby) loan
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “The position everyone is talking about is the goalkeeper, as Liverpool close in on a £66.8m move for Roma’s Alisson.
“Midfield has been been strengthened with Fabinho and Naby Keita, and now Xherdan Shaqiri too but many see Liverpool’s striking options needing a boost, if only in terms of experience – but anyone coming to the club will know they’ll have a job and half to play regularly ahead of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.”
Chelsea
Position last season: fifth
Transfers in: Jorginho (Napoli) £50m
Transfers out: Jonathan Panzo (Monaco) undisclosed, Mitchell Beeney (Sligo) free, Wallace Oliveira (released), Trevoh Chalobah (Ipswich) loan, Nathan Baxter (Yeovil) loan, Reece James (Wigan) loan, Dujon Sterling (Coventry) loan, Lewis Baker (Leeds) loan, Jake Clarke-Salter (Vitesse) loan, Danilo Pantic (Partizan) loan, Eduardo (Vitesse) loan, Kenedy (Newcastle) loan, Jhoao Rodriguez (Tenerife) loan, Jamal Blackman (Leeds) loan, Todd Kane (Hull) loan, Mason Mount (Derby) loan
BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says the transfer market doesn’t really interest him and other people at the club will decide who comes in and goes out, although Jorginho has followed him from Napoli.
“However he may have to contend with some potential departures. The futures of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois are far from certain.
“He did allow himself to suggest that he would like to see a bit more quality in midfield but that he could adapt players he currently has to do this.”
Arsenal
Position last season: sixth
Transfers in: Lucas Torreira (Sampdoria) £26m, Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) £19m, Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund) £16m, Matteo Guendouzi (Lorient) undisclosed, Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus) free
Transfers out: Per Mertesacker (retired), Jack Wilshere (West Ham) free, Santi Cazorla (Villarreal) free, Hugo Keto (Brighton) free, Tafari Moore (Plymouth) free, Chiori Johnson (Bolton) free, Yassin Fortune (Sion) free, Aaron Eyoma (Derby) free, Marc Bola (Blackpool) free, Vlad Dragomir, Ryan Huddart, Alex Crean (all released), Takuma Asano (Hannover) loan
BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “For the first time in over two decades Arsenal head into a new season without Arsene Wenger at the helm which makes predictions a little difficult. The last campaign for the Frenchman proved very disappointing and his successor takes over with the club at its lowest league ebb on the pitch in years.
“Unai Emery’s first objective will be to make the Gunners challenge for a top-four finish. The players who have left the squad are no major surprise while the business already done has started to fill a few of the cracks which have appeared in the last couple of years. Two experienced defenders will help and a new goalkeeper in Leno may signal a real challenge to Petr Cech in the battle for the gloves.
“Lucas Torreira looked impressive as a defensive midfielder for Uruguay in the World Cup and looks to be an astute acquisition. The front pair of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have the potential to provide goals but the Gunners could still do with some potency out wide. And at the back another dominant central defender and left sided player would be on fans’ shopping lists. But perhaps after a stale end to the Wenger era this new direction will have an immediate impact.”
Burnley
Position last season: seventh
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Scott Arfield (Rangers) free, Tom Anderson (Doncaster) free, Josh Ginnelly (Walsall) free, Chris Long, Dean Marney (both released)
BBC Radio Lancashire’s Scott Read: “They look a central defender light, having not strengthened since the sale of Michael Keane 12 months ago. Kevin Long was an able deputy for Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, but injury to either would leave them stretched at the back. A little extra pace and mobility, out wide and/or up front could also be a priority.
“The longer Burnley remain in the Europa League, the tougher they’ll find the Premier League, at least that’s how the theory goes. However, the Championship title, two consecutive years in the top flight and then securing European football has told me that theories, where Sean Dyche is concerned, often go out of the window.”
Everton
Wayne Rooney on Everton, England and the MLS
Position last season: eighth
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal) undisclosed, Wayne Rooney (DC United) undisclosed, Joel Robles (Real Betis) free, Jose Baxter (Oldham) free, David Henen (released), Luke Garbutt (Oxford) loan, Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray) loan
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “I think Marco Silva and new director of football Marcel Brands will be aware of the lack of depth in the striking department. Cenk Tosun has proved to be a good signing, but he’ll need support up top. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did well last season and we know Oumar Niasse can be a handful – but can Everton find an experienced top-class striker or two?
“Everton have holding midfielders – but may look for more creative midfielders. A fit again Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a bonus and it’ll be interesting to see if Ademola Lookman is given more opportunities after coming back from his loan spell in Germany. The Blues squad is big, and may well require trimming down before any new signings come in. Last season proved tough for the likes of Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlasic – but will the new manager give them an opportunity to impress?”
Leicester
Position last season: ninth
Transfers in: James Maddison (Norwich) £20m, Ricardo Pereira (Porto) £17.7m, Jonny Evans (West Brom) £3.5m
Transfers out: Riyad Mahrez (Man City) £60m, Connor Wood (Bradford) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Huddersfield) free, Robert Huth (released), Elliott Moore (OH Leuven) loan
BBC Radio Leicester’s Ian Stringer: “The Foxes will only really know what they need when they’re sure the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Harry Maguire, Wilfred NDidi and Jamie Vardy won’t be poached. Claude Puel may want another left back to assist youngster Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs.
“The central midfield is packed and there’s options on the wings but yet another ‘number 10’ or creative player wouldn’t surprise me.
“Jack Grealish was mentioned before Spurs showed interest but I’d expect the Foxes to spread their transfer tentacles far and wide. An overseas star wouldn’t be strange; let’s hope they’re more successful than Ahmed Musa and Islam Slimani.”
Newcastle
Position last season: 10th
Transfers in: Martin Dubravka (Sparta Prague) undisclosed, Ki Sung-yueng (Swansea) free, Kenedy (Chelsea) loan
Transfers out: Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad) undisclosed, Massadio Haidara (Lens) free, Stuart Findlay (Kilmarnock) free
BBC Radio Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck: “Rafael Benitez is again frustrated by Newcastle’s approach to transfers. He was hoping for more than the £45m that was spent last summer – but has again only been given a modest budget.
“The Spaniard knows he needs to sell players – and reduce the wage bill – in order to bring in more new faces; striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – wanted by Fulham – is his most saleable asset.
“Benitez needs at least one striker. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon is the Magpies’ top target after they missed out on Alassane Plea. The United boss also wants to re-sign winger Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, and could finance that deal by allowing Matt Ritchie to join Stoke.
“Three players have arrived so far. But given that Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have returned after being on loan, and Ki Sung-yeung is a like-for-like replacement for Mikel Merino, Newcastle are effectively no stronger than they were last season.”
Crystal Palace
Position last season: 11th
Transfers in: Vicente Guaita (Getafe) free
Transfers out: Yohan Cabaye (Al Nasr) free, Damien Delaney (Cork) free, Diego Cavalieri, Lee Chung-yong (both released)
BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “Things have been very quiet on the transfer front so far this summer which has alarmed some Palace supporters.
“Roy Hodgson produced a miracle last season given how lop-sided the squad was and the number of injuries suffered through the campaign.
“A new goalkeeper has finally been brought in [Guaita] but new recruits are required in midfield and up front.
“However most efforts are being targeted at keeping hold of Palace’s current stars – particularly Wilfried Zaha.”
Bournemouth
Position last season: 12th
Transfers in: David Brooks (Sheffield United) undisclosed
Transfers out: Benik Afobe (Wolves) £10m, Lewis Grabban (Nottingham Forest) £6m, Max Gradel (Toulouse) undisclosed, Adam Federici (Stoke) undisclosed, Rhoys Wiggins (retired), Ryan Allsop (Wycombe) free, Ollie Harfield (Dag & Red) free, Sam Matthews (Bristol Rovers) free, Joe Quigley (Maidstone) free, Baily Cargill, Patrick O’Flaherty (both released), Mikael Ndjoli (Kilmarnock) loan
BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “It’s been a quiet summer so far, but the Cherries are chasing Uruguayan international left-back Diego Laxalt, and Colombian midfielder Jefferson Lerma.
“If Eddie Howe can persuade Lerma and Laxalt to come to the Vitality stadium, then two of their key needs will have been addressed. Centre-back and/or right-back could also be positions that give Eddie Howe more strength in depth and formation options.”
West Ham
Felipe Anderson is West Ham’s club record signing
Position last season: 13th
Transfers in: Felipe Anderson (Lazio) £36m, Issa Diop (Toulouse) £22m, Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea) £7m, Andriy Yarmolenko (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Fabian Balbuena (Corinthians) undisclosed, Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) free, Ryan Fredericks (Fulham) free
Transfers out: Ben Wells (QPR) undisclosed, Reece Burke (Hull) undisclosed, James Collins, Patrice Evra (both released)
BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “Having appointed a new manager in the shape of Manuel Pellegrini the Hammers have done their transfer business early. And after calls from fans for the club to splash some of the Premier League cash the board have gone out and invested heavily this summer to strengthen areas identified by many observers as those needing to be addressed.
“Diop looks as a fine prospect in the heart of defence while Ryan Fredericks will match the energy and up and down style of Arthur Masuaku on the opposite full-back flank. With the arrival of Anderson and Yarmolenko the Irons’ front four looks very strong and Jack Wilshere has the qualities to unlock defences [providing those injury doubts don’t haunt him].
“I suppose there could still be a couple of exits if the squad seems a little too large and there’s a suggestion that Marko Arnautovic could attract attention from elsewhere. But based on what has been done so far the supporters will be expecting a top-10 finish, a push for possible European qualification and a cup run.”
Watford
Position last season: 14th
Transfers in: Gerard Deulofeu (Barcelona) £11.5m, Adam Masina (Bologna) £3.5m, Marc Navarro (Espanyol) £1.8m, Ben Wilmot (Stevenage) undisclosed, Ken Sema (Ostersund) undisclosed, Ben Foster (West Brom) undisclosed
Transfers out: Costel Pantilimon (Nottingham Forest) undisclosed, Mauro Zarate (Boca Juniors) undisclosed, Brandon Mason (Coventry) free
BBC Three Counties Radio’s Geoff Doyle: “It looks as though Watford have again been canny in the transfer market, not spending too much (about £25m so far) but bringing in players to strengthen last season’s problem areas to bolster a squad which is already pretty strong but which was badly hampered by injuries last campaign.
“Ben Foster is an excellent goalkeeper choice, two full-backs were required and were brought in early, Gerard Deulofeu will continue to get better and the others could also make their mark.
“A striker is the one area that probably still needs strengthening. Troy Deeney’s influence has lessened over the three Premier League years although injury hasn’t helped and Andre Gray didn’t quite hit the mark last season so proven back-up is probably needed if those two don’t fire.”
Brighton
Position last season: 15th
Transfers in: Bernardo (RB Leipzig) £9m, Florin Andone (Deportivo) undisclosed, Jason Steele (Sunderland) undisclosed, David Button (Fulham) undisclosed, Yves Bissouma (Lille) undisclosed, Leon Balogun (Mainz) free, Joseph Tomlinson (Yeovil) free, Hugo Keto (Arsenal) free
Transfers out: Jamie Murphy (Rangers) undisclosed, Connor Goldson (Rangers) undisclosed, Bailey Vose (Colchester) undisclosed, Henrik Bjordal (Zulte Waregem) undisclosed, Uwe Huenemeier (Paderborn) free, Steve Sidwell, Liam Rosenior, Niki Maenpaa (all released), Robert Sanchez (Forest Green Rovers) loan, Ben Hall (Notts County) loan, Christian Walton (Wigan) loan, Steven Alzate (Swindon) loan, Ales Mateju (Brescia) loan
BBC Sussex’s Johnny Cantor: “The Seagulls moved quickly to secure long-term targets early in the window and opted for players with versatility like Leon Balogun and Bernardo who can play in a number of positions.
“Initially the main focus was on the defence and two new keepers but the spotlight has moved further up the pitch.
“The arrival of central midfielder Yves Bissouma may allow for different option of a 4-3-3 next season, a possible Plan B to improve on last year’s away from home [11 points] but a creative number 10 or another wide player may complete the squad alongside the cut-price capture of Florin Andone earlier in the summer.”
Huddersfield
Position last season: 16th
Transfers in: Terence Kongolo (Monaco) £17m, Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke) £5.7m, Juninho Bacuna (Groningen) undisclosed, Jonas Lossl (Mainz) undisclosed, Erik Durm (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Leicester) free
Transfers out: Dean Whitehead (retired), Dylan Cogill (Clyde) free, Jack Boyle (Clyde) free, Jack Payne (Bradford) loan, Robert Green, Denilson Carvalho, Luca Colville, Cameron Taylor (all released)
BBC Radio Leeds’ Paul Ogden: “So far, a classic modern-day Huddersfield Town transfer window, with a nod towards the financial reward for having stayed in the Premier League at the first attempt.
“A new club transfer record has been set by the permanent acquisition of Terence Kongolo from Monaco, accompanied by a handful of other, more obscure, and typically bold bargain-hunter’s captures.
“Egypt’s Ramadan Sobhi for example, salvaged from the rubble of Stoke’s relegation collapse, wouldn’t have interested many other Premier League clubs. Head coach David Wagner however, will have seen something he liked in Sobhi as an opponent last season and believe he can get much more from the player than others have.
“Equally original is the arrival of ex-Germany international Erik Durm to add some much-needed nous to Huddersfield’s left side. His low risk, short contract from Borussia Dortmund is a classic win-win.”
Southampton
Position last season: 17th
Transfers in: Mohamed Elyounoussi (Basel) £16m, Angus Gunn (Man City) £13.5m, Stuart Armstrong (Celtic) £7m, Jannik Vestergaard (Borussia Monchengladbach) undisclosed
Transfers out: Dusan Tadic (Ajax) £10m, Olufela Olomola (Scunthorpe) free, Florin Gardos (Universitatea Craiova) free, Armani Little (Oxford) free, Will Wood (Accrington) free, Jeremy Pied, Ollie Cook, Richard Bakary, Stuart Taylor (all released), Guido Carrillo (Leganes) loan, Ryan Seager (Telstar) loan
BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “I expect further movement after a good summer so far for Saints. They could add a forward/winger but I suspect they will be keen to move Sofiane Boufal out on loan first. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster also looks set for a loan move away following the investment in Angus Gunn.
“Some supporters are calling for another striker, after struggling for goals in the last two seasons.”
Wolves
Shades of Banks – Portugal keeper’s brilliant save
Position last season: champions (Championship)
Transfers in: Benik Afobe (Bournemouth) £10m, Willy Boly (Porto) £10m, Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon) fee not yet decided, Leo Bonatini (Al-Hilal) undisclosed, Ruben Vinagre (Monaco) undisclosed, Raul Jimenez (Benfica) loan, Diogo Jota (Atletico Madrid) undisclosed
Transfers out: Ben Marshall (Norwich) undisclosed, Duckens Nazon (STVV) undisclosed, Prince Oniangue (Caen) undisclosed, Jon Flatt (Scunthorpe) free, Hakeem Odoffin (Northampton) free, Jordan Allan, Dan Armstrong, Anthony Breslin, Nicu Carnat, Ross Finnie, Conor Levingston, Tomas Nogueira, Adam Osbourne, Ryan Rainey, Jose Xavier (all released), Benik Afobe (Stoke) loan, Christian Herc (Dunajska Streda) loan, Aaron Collins (Colchester) loan, Sherwin Seedorf (Bradford) loan, Roderick Miranda (Olympiakos) loan
BBC WM 95.6’s Mike Taylor: “Wolves supporters expecting a wild summer of spending from their wealthy owners following promotion have so far been left, if not disappointed, then maybe a little unfulfilled. It’s hard to believe that will stay the case for long. Much of the money so far laid out this summer has been to consolidate last year’s squad by turning loans into permanent deals, most notably for the hugely popular Willy Boly and Diogo Jota, and they didn’t come cheaply.
“The signing of the Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio may have been a little opportunistic, Wolves plucking him out of Sporting Lisbon’s summer of chaos, to the clear annoyance of his former employers, who are determined to extract some sort of payment at least. There are suggestions that Sporting want £50m for the keeper! While his quality and value is beyond doubt, it could be argued that other areas of the squad more urgently require reinforcement.
“Raul Jimenez on loan is so far the forward new to the club, and although he’s enjoyed success with Benfica, they have used him sparingly in view of their total outlay for him. If he proves to be a success or is joined by another striker, Benik Afobe’s immediate departure to Stoke after signing a full deal will look less unusual. An additional central defender would seem to be a likely priority too, and it would be no surprise to see Wolves use the loan-with-a-view-to-permanent method extensively again in whatever remaining business they have in mind.”
Cardiff
Position last season: second (Championship)
Transfers in: Josh Murphy (Norwich) £11m, Bobby Reid (Bristol City) £10m, Greg Cunningham (Preston) £4m, Alex Smithies (QPR) £3.5m,
Transfers out: None
BBC Wales’ Dafydd Pritchard: “Owner Vincent Tan said Cardiff City would learn from their previous stint in the Premier League – which ended after a single tumultuous season in 2014 – and their spending this summer suggests they have done just that.
“Winger Josh Murphy, forward Bobby Reid, goalkeeper Alex Smithies and left-back Greg Cunningham have joined for less than £30m between them, adding quality to the squad which won promotion from the Championship in efficient fashion last season.
“Manager Neil Warnock has done his business early and with the exception of a few loan signings – Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is in the frame to return – he seems unlikely to make many more additions.”
Fulham
Position last season: third, play-off winners (Championship)
Transfers in: Jean Michael Seri (Nice) undisclosed, Maxime le Marchand (Nice) undisclosed.
Transfers out: David Button (Brighton) undisclosed, Ryan Fredericks (West Ham) free, Stephen Humphrys (Scunthorpe) loan, Elijah Adebayo (Swindon) loan
BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “Fulham fans are already hoping they have got the Ivorian Xavi as Jean Michael Seri has topped the Ligue 1 rankings for passes played and completed for the past two seasons. He should certainly fit in with the way they play their football under Slavisa Jokanovic, who will also be keen to bring Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matt Targett to Craven Cottage on permanent deals after the Southampton and Newcastle players impressed on loan in the second half of last season’s promotion campaign.
“Fulham have also been busy tying key players to long-term deals with captain Tom Cairney and influential USA defender Tim Ream extending their contracts. This is good news after losing full-back Ryan Fredericks, who ran down his contract and moved to West Ham on a free transfer.
“They need to strengthen in central defence, at left-back and up front.”

Transfer deadline day: Who will Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham look to sign?
Will Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s £60m move to Arsenal go through before the deadline?
It promises to be another busy transfer deadline day for clubs in England – and BBC Sport will bring you all of the deals as they happen.
Premier League teams have already spent out millions this January, and Wednesday’s deals could well push total spending past the record – £225m – that was set in 2011.
Liverpool’s £75m purchase of defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton is the biggest incoming transfer in England so far this month.
But who could be on the move before Wednesday’s 23:00 GMT deadline?
Our transfers live page is the place to keep across all day, running from 07:00 GMT on Wednesday until the early hours of Thursday as those late deals are confirmed, and you can stay in the conversation using #bbcdeadlineday on social media.
We will bring you the latest news, you can hear the best analysis from BBC Radio 5 live and you can also watch MOTD at 22:45 GMT.
You can keep on top of all the completed deals in our transfer tracker and follow BBC sports reporter David Ornstein’s transfer deadline day on the Match of the Day Instagram page.
One more ‘perfect’ signing for City?
Manchester City are running away with the Premier League – and are expecting a big-money arrival before the transfer window closes. They have agreed a deal for France Under-21 defender Aymeric Laporte to join for a club record £57m from Athletic Bilbao.
They are also interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, though it appears if that transfer goes through, the Brazilian would remain at Shakhtar until the summer.
Goalkeeper Ederson and right-back Kyle Walker have made the biggest impact at Man City since joining in the summer transfer window
French football expert Julien Laurens on the 5 live Euro Leagues Football Show
Laporte is a Pep Guardiola type of player, so good on the ball. He carries the ball into midfield, he is perfect for City and City are perfect for him.
City were ready to pay 60m Euros for him in 2016 but he said he was not ready and he wanted to stay at Bilbao. Now 18 months later they are back for him and he feels ready. He knows now is the time, the World Cup is in six months and he has not been capped by France yet.
France boss Didier Deschamps is sceptical about him, physically especially. That is the only question mark over him coming to the Premier League.
Manchester United are not expected to be active following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. A number of players – Matteo Darmian, Sergio Romero, Daley Blind and Marouane Fellaini – have been linked with moved away from Old Trafford but Jose Mourinho says no-one will be going.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is attracting interest from LA Galaxy but that deal can be done after the UK transfer window closes.
‘Arsenal in a crazy situation’
Arsenal’s sole focus is to complete the club-record signing of Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – but that may rely on other deals.
With a deal agreed between Arsenal and Dortmund, the deal will go through if/when Dortmund secure a replacement for the Gabon international.
It remains unclear if that replacement will be Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, but it is likely the Frenchman will depart Emirates Stadium – either on loan or permanently – to seek game time before this summer’s World Cup.
The Aubameyang transfer would leave little money available for further major signings, so unless money is recouped for Giroud the Gunners would have to wait until the summer to potentially bolster their defence and midfield.
French football expert Julien Laurens on the 5 live Euro Leagues Football Show
I would be amazed if Arsenal let Giroud go to Chelsea, but if Michy Batshuayi goes to Dortmund and Chelsea cannot sign Edin Dzeko then Giroud is clearly on their list.
Arsenal 1 (Giroud 27′) Middlesbrough 0
I’d find it weird to let Giroud go to a competitor. It’s a crazy situation. Arsenal could have signed Aubameyang in the summer and have Giroud as their ‘Plan B’ option but instead they hesitated for a long time between Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette and chose Lacazette for £53m.
Then, six months down the line, they decide that maybe that was a mistake so they are going to spend another £55m on Aubameyang, a striker with many similarities to Lacazette.
If Giroud wants to go to the World Cup he has to play, and if Arsenal have Aubameyang and Lacazette then he will surely have to leave.
Chelsea might be a busy club, with much of the focus on the fate of strikers.
The club have been trying hard to secure manager Antonio Conte extra power in attack, and the search has centred on Dzeko, Roma’s 31-year-old former Manchester City striker.
Edin Dzeko scored 50 Premier League goals in 130 appearances for Manchester City
A deal for the Bosnian has proved to be prolonged, with his age a complication and his financial demands unlikely to be cheap. There were reports in Italy on Monday that the proposed move for the attacker, who won two Premier League titles and the FA Cup at Etihad Stadium, was off.
Will this prompt a move for Giroud – and would the Gunners consider selling to a rival once more? What will it all mean for Chelsea’s Belgian striker Batshuayi?
Batshuayi is wanted by both Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund, with talks ongoing with the Bundesliga side about a loan move.
Chelsea look set for success in a move for another Roma player, defender Emerson Palmieri, who is on course to join Conte’s squad for a fee which could rise to about £23m.
The departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona has shaped much of the debate around Liverpool’s January transfer strategy, but at this stage major incomings look unlikely.
It may well be about the departures of players such as Daniel Sturridge and Lazar Markovic than Liverpool parting with large chunks of the £142m they received for the Brazilian.
This may disappoint some fans but is a policy that should also be placed in context.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is not prepared to go for quick fixes, as proved by his determination to wait until the start of this month to pay £75m for Van Dijk after failing to sign him last summer.
While there is an element of risk in not strengthening, the powerful counter argument is that Liverpool are prudent to wait until the summer – when they will sign Naby Keita for £51m – to get who they really want rather than settle for second best this month.
Pochettino the perfect guy for Lucas?
For three weeks, it seemed as though Tottenham would be prepared to stand back and let everyone else join the deadline-day scramble.
Even when they were heavily linked with Bordeaux winger Malcom, no response was forthcoming.
However, with the clock ticking, Spurs made their move for Lucas Moura, who had already been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal this month.
There is still work to be done. But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not one to fail on deadline day.
French football expert Julien Laurens on the 5 live Euro Leagues football show
Lucas Moura has been in London since the end of last week and he has met Daniel Levy and other people at Tottenham. He didn’t want to leave Paris, he had a baby not long ago and has many close friends at Paris St-Germain, but he knows that he has to go as he is not playing.
PSG spent £38m – then a club record – to sign Lucas Moura in 2013 but he has fallen out of favour after the arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe
He has been forced out by PSG. At 25, Spurs realise £25m for a player with his potential is pretty cheap.
He has shown at times that he has a lot of talent. He needs consistency and he needs a manager who can help him improve, something Unai Emery and Laurent Blanc have not been able to do at PSG.
Mauricio Pochettino may be the perfect guy for him right now. He has the pace, he has the skill but he is going to get kicked a lot. If he can cope with the aggression he will be fine.
‘Allardyce a deadline-day master’
Everton manager Sam Allardyce is an old hand at the deadline-day game – so it would be no surprise if we saw action in and out of Goodison Park before the window shuts.
Allardyce is short of options at left-back with Leighton Baines injured and Cuco Martina the current emergency option, but interest in Bristol City’s talented Joe Bryan is sure to be met with stiff resistance.
Everton’s potential business will also rely on departures and loan offers for summer buys Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez. If Everton can offload Klaassen, on high wages following his £25m move from Ajax, or Morgan Schneiderlin then that might free up room for Sevilla’s Steven Nzonzi, who was signed by Allardyce when he was Blackburn manager.
Sandro would also welcome a loan move and that may yet materialise.
Everton’s lack of goalscoring threat may mean striker Oumar Niasse survives for now, despite interest from Crystal Palace, West Brom and Brighton in this window.
The dogfight at the bottom – well, bottom half
With the 11 teams from Watford down to Swansea covered by just six points, competition for strikers is likely to be at fever pitch.
West Brom manager Alan Pardew may well have pulled off the deal of the window down at the bottom by signing Daniel Sturridge on loan from Liverpool.
Sturridge was wanted by Newcastle and Inter Milan but it was West Brom who won the race.
He scored at the last World Cup and the last Euros – could a productive loan move at Albion send Daniel Sturridge to Russia?
Watford’s Troy Deeney is also on Pardew’s wanted list, but for that to happen West Brom need to sell £20m-rated defender Jonny Evans, and that might not be so easy after Evans injured a hamstring in the FA Cup fourth-round win at Liverpool on Saturday.
There have been no bids, and the Baggies are increasingly confident the Northern Irishman will remain at The Hawthorns.
After missing out on Sturridge, Newcastle may be back in the market for a striker and have been linked with Nicolai Jorgensen from Feyenoord.
West Ham, meanwhile, have been linked with Schneiderlin, but are only willing to take the France international midfielder on loan. Hammers boss David Moyes could also be tempted into the market because of injuries and suspensions, with left-back Arthur Masuaku’s six-match ban for spitting about to start.
For the third season in succession, Swansea have spent Christmas and the New Year in the relegation zone – so the need for reinforcements is plain to see.
A paltry 15 goals from 24 games is the lowest return in the Premier League, so attacking players are a priority.
The Swans are hopeful of re-signing forward Andre Ayew from West Ham, while Serbian winger Lazar Markovic could join on loan from Liverpool.
Audacious bids to sign Atletico Madrid pair Nicolas Gaitan and Kevin Gameiro seem less likely.
Brighton and Southampton have signed forwards in recent days – Leonardo Ulloa and Guido Carrillo respectively – so may be done in that department.
Huddersfield got their business done early by signing defender Terence Kongolo from Monaco, and midfielder Alex Pritchard from Norwich. Expect that to be them done in the transfer market.

Man Utd team news: Predicted 4-2-3-1 line up to face Newcastle – changes after Alkmaar tie | Football | Sport
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is without four regular starters against Newcastle this afternoon.
United head into the match in the bottom half of the table following their 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal on Monday.
Solskjaer’s men have struggled to find the net this season with nine goals in seven matches and that was reflected in their 0-0 Europa League draw against AZ Alkmaar in midweek.
Another member of the squad joined the injury list during that tie as Jesse Lingard tweaked his hamstring while making a sprint on the plastic pitch.
The energetic forward has company on the sidelines with regular starters Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial also battling for fitness.
Shaw and Martial are also nursing hamstring issues, while Pogba needs to let his swollen ankle heal.
Asked if any of them could return for the trip to Tyneside, Solskjaer said: “Probably not [but] let’s see.
“There’s the international break to come and that might be the time to give them 10 to 14 days extra to get them ready for the Liverpool game.”
Solskjaer took a strong squad to Alkmaar and said of the travelling players: “Well, they’ve travelled and, of course, some of them played 90 minutes here and will play on Sunday.
“They’re professionals and will recover. They’ve got great staff around them and all the little details will be taken care of. We’ll be 100 per cent when we get up there.”
One player who could return for Newcastle is Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The right-back was omitted from matchday squads versus Arsenal and Alkmaar due to tonsillitis but should have recovered by now.
In the other full-back position, Ashley Young is tipped to come back into the side after sitting out Thursday’s trip.
Victor Lindelof should keep his place after playing in Holland and be partnered by the ever-present Harry Maguire.
David de Gea played in midweek but should start again with Scott McTominay returning to protect the defence.
A shortage of midfield options means Solskjaer must choose between Nemanja Matic and Fred to accompany McTominay, with the Brazilian’s superior fitness expected to land him a starting berth.
Daniel James played in midweek but should make the side, this time on the wing, with Andreas Pereira flanking Marcus Rashford down the middle.
Due to Lingard’s absence, Juan Mata will likely operate in the hole which would make for six changes from Thursday night.
Man Utd predicted line-up vs Newcastle
De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young; McTominay, Matic; Pereira, Mata, James; Rashford.

Man Utd team news: Predicted line-up for Newcastle clash as pressure builds on Solskjaer | Football | Sport
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could welcome Aaron Wan-Bissaka back into the Manchester United team on Sunday – although Mason Greenwood is expected to be benched again.
Wan-Bissaka missed Monday’s 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal through tonsillitis but there was hope he would return for Thursday’s trip to AZ Alkmaar.
The young full-back was left out of the Europa League travelling squad, however, in order to help his recovery from the illness.
Given Wan-Bissaka’s general fitness levels and the fact tonsillitis rarely lasts longer than 10 days, he is expected to regain fitness for Newcastle.
Mason Greenwood will likely be benched on the weekend, however, after playing 77 minutes on Thursday.
Marcus Rashford was introduced for the last 15 minutes of the 0-0 draw in Holland and should start up front, as has been the norm in Anthony Martial’s absence.
Flanking the England international should be Daniel James and Andreas Pereira, making it the same front three which tried to break down Arsenal.
Paul Pogba aggravated an ankle injury against the Gunners and was left out of the France squad for the upcoming international break after not travelling in the week.
His expected absence should see stalwart Scott McTominay start alongside Fred, who has more energy to play twice in four days than Nemanja Matic.
Ahead of them with freedom to roam will likely be Juan Mata following Jesse Lingard’s hamstring tweak on Thursday’s plastic pitch.
Brandon Williams made a fine full first-team debut against Alkmaar but Solskjaer is loyal to Ashley Young and is expected to start him at left-back while Luke Shaw continues to recover from a muscular injury.
Victor Lindelof played in midweek due to injuries to Phil Jones and Eric Bailly and will turn out alongside Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.
David de Gea peculiarly played ahead of Sergio Romero in the Europa League on Thursday, but he will stay in the side at St James’ Park.
Man Utd predicted line-up vs Newcastle
De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young; McTominay, Fred; Pereira, Mata, James; Rashford.

The final marketing campaign for the Frenchman proved very disappointing and his successor takes over with the membership at its lowest league ebb on the pitch in years.
“Unai Emery’s first goal can be to make the Gunners problem for a top-four end. The gamers who’ve left the squad aren’t any main shock whereas the enterprise already accomplished has began to fill a number of of the cracks which have appeared within the final couple of years. Two skilled defenders will assist and a brand new goalkeeper in Leno could sign an actual problem to Petr Cech within the battle for the gloves.
“Lucas Torreira regarded spectacular as a defensive midfielder for Uruguay within the World Cup and appears to be an astute acquisition. The entrance pair of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have the potential to supply objectives however the Gunners may nonetheless do with some efficiency out large. And on the again one other dominant central defender and left sided participant could be on followers’ buying lists. However maybe after a stale finish to the Wenger period this new path can have a direct impression.”
Burnley

Transfers out: Scott Arfield (Rangers) free, Tom Anderson (Doncaster) free, Josh Ginnelly (Walsall) free, Chris Lengthy, Dean Marney (each launched)
BBC Radio Lancashire’s Scott Learn: “They give the impression of being a central defender mild, having not strengthened because the sale of Michael Keane 12 months in the past. Kevin Lengthy was an in a position deputy for Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, however damage to both would go away them stretched on the again. Just a little further tempo and mobility, out large and/or up entrance may be a precedence.
“The longer Burnley stay within the Europa League, the harder they’re going to discover the Premier League, not less than that is how the idea goes. Nevertheless, the Championship title, two consecutive years within the high flight after which securing European soccer has instructed me that theories, the place Sean Dyche is anxious, typically exit of the window.”
Everton
Wayne Rooney on Everton, England and the MLS
Place final season: eighth
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal) undisclosed, Wayne Rooney (DC United) undisclosed, Joel Robles (Actual Betis) free, Jose Baxter (Oldham) free, David Henen (launched), Luke Garbutt (Oxford) mortgage, Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray) mortgage
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “I feel Marco Silva and new director of soccer Marcel Manufacturers will concentrate on the shortage of depth within the hanging division. Cenk Tosun has proved to be an excellent signing, however he’ll want assist up high. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did properly final season and we all know Oumar Niasse is usually a handful – however can Everton discover an skilled top-class striker or two?
“Everton have holding midfielders – however could search for extra artistic midfielders. A match once more Gylfi Sigurdsson can be a bonus and it will be fascinating to see if Ademola Lookman is given extra alternatives after getting back from his mortgage spell in Germany. The Blues squad is huge, and should properly require trimming down earlier than any new signings are available in. Final season proved robust for the likes of Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlasic – however will the brand new supervisor give them a possibility to impress?”

“The central midfield is packed and there is choices on the wings however yet one more ‘quantity 10’ or artistic participant would not shock me.
“Jack Grealish was talked about earlier than Spurs confirmed curiosity however I would count on the Foxes to unfold their switch tentacles far and large. An abroad star would not be unusual; let’s hope they’re extra profitable than Ahmed Musa and Islam Slimani.”

“The Spaniard is aware of he must promote gamers – and cut back the wage invoice – as a way to convey in additional new faces; striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – wished by Fulham – is his most saleable asset.
“Benitez wants not less than one striker. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon is the Magpies’ high goal after they missed out on Alassane Plea. The United boss additionally desires to re-sign winger Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, and will finance that deal by permitting Matt Ritchie to hitch Stoke.
“Three gamers have arrived to date. However on condition that Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have returned after being on mortgage, and Ki Sung-yeung is a like-for-like alternative for Mikel Merino, Newcastle are successfully no stronger than they have been final season.”

And after calls from followers for the membership to splash among the Premier League money the board have gone out and invested closely this summer time to strengthen areas recognized by many observers as these needing to be addressed.
“Diop seems as a nice prospect within the coronary heart of defence whereas Ryan Fredericks will match the power and up and down model of Arthur Masuaku on the alternative full-back flank. With the arrival of Anderson and Yarmolenko the Irons’ entrance 4 seems very sturdy and Jack Wilshere has the qualities to unlock defences [providing those injury doubts don’t haunt him].

“Ben Foster is a superb goalkeeper alternative, two full-backs have been required and have been introduced in early, Gerard Deulofeu will proceed to get higher and the others may additionally make their mark.
“A striker is the one space that in all probability nonetheless wants strengthening. Troy Deeney’s affect has lessened over the three Premier League years though damage hasn’t helped and Andre Grey did not fairly hit the mark final season so confirmed back-up might be wanted if these two do not hearth.”

“A brand new membership switch file has been set by the everlasting acquisition of Terence Kongolo from Monaco, accompanied by a handful of different, extra obscure, and sometimes daring bargain-hunter’s captures.
“Egypt’s Ramadan Sobhi for instance, salvaged from the rubble of Stoke’s relegation collapse, would not have many different Premier League golf equipment. Head coach David Wagner nonetheless, can have seen one thing he favored in Sobhi as an opponent final season and consider he can get way more from the participant than others have.

It is laborious to consider that can keep the case for lengthy. A lot of the cash to date laid out this summer time has been to consolidate final 12 months’s squad by turning loans into everlasting offers, most notably for the massively standard Willy Boly and Diogo Jota, and so they did not come cheaply.
“The signing of the Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio could have been somewhat opportunistic, Wolves plucking him out of Sporting Lisbon’s summer time of chaos, to the clear annoyance of his former employers, who’re decided to extract some type of cost not less than. There are suggestions that Sporting want £50m for the keeper! Whereas his high quality and worth is past doubt, it may very well be argued that different areas of the squad extra urgently require reinforcement.
“Raul Jimenez on mortgage is to date the ahead new to the membership, and though he is loved success with Benfica, they’ve used him sparingly in view of their complete outlay for him. If he proves to be successful or is joined by one other striker, Benik Afobe’s rapid departure to Stoke after signing a full deal will look much less uncommon. An extra central defender would appear to be a possible precedence too, and it might be no shock to see Wolves use the loan-with-a-view-to-permanent technique extensively once more in no matter remaining enterprise they take into account.”

He ought to actually slot in with the best way they play their soccer beneath Slavisa Jokanovic, who may even be eager to convey Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matt Targett to Craven Cottage on everlasting offers after the Southampton and Newcastle gamers impressed on mortgage within the second half of final season’s promotion marketing campaign.
“Fulham have additionally been busy tying key gamers to long-term offers with captain Tom Cairney and influential USA defender Tim Ream extending their contracts. That is excellent news after dropping full-back Ryan Fredericks, who ran down his contract and moved to West Ham on a free switch.
