GR8 Holiday Albums
These are NOT in any rank order.  I mean how do you compare perfection?
1)  Ella Fitzgerald, Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas  (IMHO Ella’s best album, and she made A LOT of albums!  Perfect match of singer, style & material.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2)  Mahalia Jackson, Christmas with Mahalia.  (I heard her The First Noel on a compilation album as a little kid.  Eventually it opened a world of music for me!  They did not call her the Queen of Gospel for nothing!. )
Tumblr media
3) Herb Alpert and the Tiajuana Brass, Christmas Album  (Quite simply, it’s lovely and heartfelt.)
Tumblr media
4) John Zorn, A Dreamer’s Christmas,  (This one blew me away!  Zorn is an experimental musician and I expected deconstructed holiday tunes or something avant garde.  This is accessible music and it is so beautiful.  If you can get it, get it!  ***BTW His album that looks like a present is NOT this album***)
5) The Superions, Destination Christmas  (The Superions are fronted by Fred Schneider of the b-52s, so expect fun.  I love fruitcake, they love fruitcake, we all love fruitcake and it’s the catchiest tune on the album!)

1) Favorite Christmas Carol? 2) Christmas Carol you would banish for all eternity?
Last year my neighbors rang the doorbell and I started going up the stairs in case it was the mail or something. I heard singing and I turned around to go back to the basement.
I grew up in a house where Christmas was significant.   My mom was/is a believer in Christmas Miracles, loves all Hallmark movies and Christmas specials.   When you start hearing Andy Williams Christmas songs in June, when there are issues with decorations staying up until Easter, Christmas is one of those things that is great for the economy and makes people happy, and I am not one of them.   I do get a kick out of the trappings, and I do pick up a Christmas record here and there.   When I leave the house in December, I don’t go into retail establishments alone without earbuds.  I don’t want to hear “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” but to every rule there is an exception - comedians Mario Cantone and Gilbert Gottfried sang it as Bette Davis and Tony Curtis on a podcast a few years ago when I was on the way to get my wisdom teeth done, and oh it was a treat.  Will it lose me followers by posting the video? Will some of you hate me for sharing it?  Probably! So let’s do that, Tumblr’s having a bad day anyway.
youtube
I was gifted the Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time as a kid - which had Doug & Bob MacKenzie’s “Twelve Gifts of Christmas” (“…and a beer”) as well as Cheech & Chong’s “Santa Claus and His Old Lady,” which was funny as a kid and funnier now that I actually get references to pop culture stuff I didn’t know.  I used to hear these on the radio on Christmas Eve and I really do love them both.  One’s more of a comedy sketch, the other is a comedy sketch plus a song parody.  Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas got me through many a Christmas car ride as a kid, so I will never decry three french toasts, two turtlenecks, and a beer.  It’s very punk rock.
Just this year I finally got (and love) The Superions’ “Destination: Christmas” - which is Fred Schneider’s not-B-52′s side project.  Today during lunch I played their song “Fruit Cake” in the car on the way to lunch, where, sadly, my favorite lunch place was unexpectedly closed for maintenance.   The whole album is really fun, and isn’t overwhelmingly Christmassy.  If you’re in an office and someone wants to play holiday music, this is a keeper.  It’s fun.  I try to find Christmas-themed songs I don’t hate because there are so many I can’t stand - like most people, I assume - I like to dig up things and say “Oh, I like this” as a sort of personal challenge.   It also gives me something to talk about at parties.  (I don’t think I’ve been invited to a Christmas party since 2010, so there you go.)   I know some people don’t like jazz/country/hip-hop… but I know there’s good stuff in every genre.  If you have the time to track it down.  I know these things aren’t carols people go around and sing… but maybe they should be.
I read a thing a couple years ago that said you (yes, you) can define “winning Christmas” by making it to December 26 without hearing the David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet of “Little Drummer Boy,” and I don’t disagree with that sentiment.  I believe Echo has said she hates “All I Want for Christmas Is my Two Front Teeth,” which I’m not crazy about but I do find Spike Jones and his City Slickers to be amazing. (Sigourney Weaver’s uncle was in the band!)  I’m circling the drain on worst carol here, but let’s go with the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas. Why not. Some weirdo loves birds and servants as much as they hate brevity.
Thank you for the ask!

Do the "Fruitcake" with Fred Schneider & The Superions
youtube
This just now got on my radar, even though it was released way back in 2010. Whatever! You can't put a date on fun. Fred Schneider (of The B-52's, of course!) & the Superions made a kind-of-sexy, but also perfectly kitschy and weird, super low-budget music video for their song "Fruitcake." Yes, it's a song about fruitcake. I won't say another word, just watch it. New holiday favorite born.
