Presenting The 2nd Annual Drumeo “Drummer Of The Year” Awards Winners
Presenting The 2nd Annual Drumeo “Drummer Of The Year” Awards Winners
Last month I shared the nominations for the 2nd Annual Drumeo “Drummer Of The Year” Awards and in that post I mentioned that I had not heard of it before publishing that post. I also pointed out that a wide variety of awards show rundowns are shared over on “The Chronicles of Piercing Ken” since that lets me post a wider variety of them. Now we are back on the Drumeo topic as they just recently…

Sarah Jarosz at Memoriał Hall OTR, Cincinnati, Ohio, April 26, 2024
Touring behind Polaroid Lovers, Sarah Jarosz is leaning heavily into the album, culling more than half of her 19-song set from the 2024 LP.
This makes the shows - like the album itself - more pop- and rock-learning than anything Jarosz has done as a solo artist or as a member of I’m with Her. As such, Jarosz, clad in leather pants and a black top April 26 inside Cincinnati’s Memorial Hall OTR, stuck exclusively to the mic on a late-show cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” and played banjo only once, on “Green Lights.”
Tumblr media
“Even Beyoncé’s doing it,” she said of the clawhammer. “I’m here for it.”
Backed by a three-piece band and mostly playing octave mandolin and acoustic guitar herself, Jarosz opened the show with four Polaroid Lovers cuts that set the tone for the evening. Bassist Daniel Kimbro provided an early highlight with an exquisite electric-bass solo on “The Way it is Now;” many of Jarosz’s own instrumental showcases, however, were blunted by Fred Eltringham’s drums, which overpowered much of the interplay between Jarosz, Kimbro and guitarist/harmony vocalist Seth Taylor, with whom the frontwoman struck some rock ‘n’ roll poses, throughout the 90-minute performance.
Tumblr media
The unfortunate drum mix made Jarosz’s solo-acoustic rendering of “Jacqueline” and a trio rendition of “Morning” all the more sweet. And when Eltringham used his hands and/or bushes on his kit as on the stunning country ballad “Days Can Turn Around” - a Polaroid highlight - it was a reminder that the show’s relative weaknesses had more to do with the material and the mix than the people on the stage festooned with candles, mic stands with braided greenery and a big red heart on the kick drum.
Nods to Jarosz’s back catalog, including “Build Me up from Bones;” “Maggie,” on which Taylor handled John Leventhal’s acoustic guitar parts on electric; and Jarosz’s interpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Ring Them Bells” reinforced the fact.
Tumblr media
Canadian singer-songwriter Le Ren warmed up the sold-out house with a well-received 30-minute set in a duo format that found her acoustic guitar accompanied by lap steel and hollow-bodied electric guitars. The playlist included George Jones’ “The Day I Lose My Mind;” Townes Van Zandt’s “Colorado Girl;” and such originals as “Diane,” a paean to the singer’s mother.
If I could look into the center of the sun, I think I’d see her there, Le Ren sang in a voice flecked with bits of early Joni Mitchell.

WILLIE NELSON TO RELEASE ALBUM FRIDAY MAY 31
Tumblr media
Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Willie Nelson's new studio album The Border in all configurations on Friday, May 31.
Willie Nelson's The Border will be available digitally, on CD and black vinyl. Meanwhile Barnes & Noble will be offering an exclusive LP edition of The Border, pressed on orange vinyl and there will be an exclusive vinyl version offered on Willie’s D2C store that includes a 12” x 12” designed lyric book featuring the gorgeous album artwork with extensive listening notes by noted writer Mikal Gilmore and photos by Pamela Springsteen. All versions are available for pre-order HERE
The album's title track - Willie's insightful interpretation of Rodney Crowell's "The Border" - is available on all DSPs today (Thursday, March 14): HERE
Cowritten by Rodney Crowell and Allen Shamblin for Crowell's 2019 Texas album (a thematic tribute to the Lone Star State which featured guest artist Willie Nelson), "The Border" describes the inner life and outer reality of a border guard ("I work on the border, I see what I see") with Crowell's composition described in Rolling Stone as "more humanist than political, but no less tragic because of it." Willie's wise worldly take on the provocative song taps into an urgent universal relevancy that defines The Border.
The Border (his 152nd album, according to Texas Monthly's interactive All Willie Nelson Albums Ranked list) premieres 10 newly recorded Willie Nelson studio performances including four new Willie Nelson/Buddy Cannon compositions--"Once Upon a Yesterday," "What If I'm Out of My Mind," "Kiss Me When You're Through" and "How Much Does It Cost"--and "Hank's Guitar," a new song cowritten by Buddy Cannon and Bobby Tomberlin.
In keeping with his longstanding tradition of shining a light on country music's finest songwriters, Willie rounded out The Border, his first album in 2024, with his versions of compositions by Larry Cordle & Erin Enderlin ("I Wrote This Song for You"), Rodney Crowell & Will Jennings ("Many a Long and Lonesome Highway"), Shawn Camp & Monty Holmes ("Made in Texas") and Mike Reid ("Nobody Knows Me Like You").
Produced by longtime musical collaborator Buddy Cannon, The Border showcases Willie Nelson (lead vocals, Trigger) accompanied by Mickey Raphael (harmonica), Bobby Terry (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar), James Mitchell (electric guitar), Jim "Moose" Brown (Wurlitzer, B-3 organ, piano, synthesizer), Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion) and Barry Bales (upright bass); backing vocals are by Buddy Cannon, and Melonie Cannon. The Border features cover art depicting the Big Bend border area between Texas and Mexico.
Willie Nelson and friends are enjoying this year's Luck Reunion today and will be performing at the 2024 Stagecoach Country Music Festival at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, on Saturday, April 27.
Willie Nelson & Family will be on the road from June through September co-headlining the Outlaw Music Festival Tour 2024. With an all-star lineup featuring Willie, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, John Mellencamp, Billy Strings and more, this year's Outlaw Music Festival promises a once-in-a-lifetime epic musical experience.

The One Eighties Set To Release Lord Huron Cover Of "The Night We Met" March 15
Tumblr media
Raleigh-area duo The One Eighties, Daniel Cook and Autumn Brand, are releasing a beautiful rendition of Lord Huron’s platinum selling song “The Night We Met” March 15, 2024 – Pre-Save HERE.  The duo first recorded the song for a special video performance on YouTube last year with friends and fellow musicians Nick Baglio (drums) and Allyn Love(pedal steel) – Watch it HERE. “Like a lot of other people, we first heard ‘The Night We Met’ while watching Netflix’s adaptation of Jay Asher’s novel 13 Reasons Why,” said the pair.  “There’s just something incredibly poignant and haunting about the song, and how it packs so much meaning into a few words. Upon discovering we both had an affinity for it, we decided on a whim to record and film it in our home studio.” The One Eighties released their critically acclaimed debut album, Minefields on August 18 (listen HERE). Minefields was mastered by Grammy-Award winners Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone(Kacey Musgraves, The National, Father John Misty) and features key players such as award-winning drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, Amanda Shires, Carrie Underwood) and bassist Mark Hill (Morgan Wallen, Luke Bryan, Kelly Clarkson) among others.   “The One Eighties’ music is subtle & haunting & the vocals are enchanting.” - Americana Highways “When listening to The One Eighties’ debut album, it’s hard not to imagine it orbiting the very same sun as Kacey Musgraves’ transcendent Golden Hour. [Album] Dylan LeBlanc kündigt neues Album "Coyote" an!
Tumblr media

Mornings like this make me feel very grateful but they also make me sad that the time creating that music is over. They’re also extremely exciting - thinking about continuing the journey and wondering where the road for the next project leads. Thanks @chaserice for taking a chance on an up-and-comer, trusting me with your songs and literally opening up your house to a crazy group of talented people to explore with you. @jordandrigby engineering, @rmcnelley on electric and some acoustic guitar, @cyoungnashville on bass and Fred Eltringham on drums. We also had @boynamedbanjo on a few songs including banjo and harmonica from @bartondaviesbanjo and @reamesw on several more. Somehow convinced JJ from @officialkaleo to whistle on “Oklahoma” and had my good friend @yuccaboy playing keys on “Sorry Momma”. Not to mention incredible guest vocals from @elvieshanemusic @hardy and @briankelley Edited by @aaronrocket and mastered by @hendyampsstudios All I can say is thank you and LET’S GO!! Hope everyone enjoys the album! https://www.instagram.com/p/CofQ8QTO-rv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MegaPick: Lucie Silvas, ‘E.G.O.’
Lucie Silvas’ new album, E.G.O., is here and we absolutely cannot get enough. The twelve-track album covers every aspect of love, through beautiful lyrics and  Silvas’ signature vocals.
Been waiting for this day, working towards it, hoping I could make it happen, hoping I could find a way to get my music out there. I’m so grateful to have done that, and no matter what happens next, I know I did what I said I would do, kept going and never quit what I love. This album wouldn’t be this album without the absolutely incredible people that put their talent passion and love into it. I can’t thank you all enough. From Jon Green who produced it to every single person involved- you have made me the luckiest and most inspired person I could ever hope to be. I hope to show my gratitude but believing in the good of people and things and showing you the love and support you show me. “E.G.O.” Is out now. Thank you for listening. And here’s to people behind the creation of this record... The album kicks off with the lead-single, “Kite,” which chronicles simultaneously having freedom and being in a relationship. Silvas wanted to capture that feeling within the music video, she tells PEOPLE, “As a song, it felt liberating, fun and exciting to write, and I wanted the video to reflect that... The man creates a woman who is going to be everything he needs her to be — to idolize him and also bend to his will and obey every move — and ultimately she becomes stronger than him and breaks away.”
Silvas continues, “He doesn’t realize that he can’t keep her spirit contained. On a larger scale, ‘Kite’ as a song talks about that very thing — being independent — and the partner you’re with is gonna find themselves in an impossible position if they want someone they have to control.” Watch the music video for yourself below.
youtube
“Kite” sets the tone for the album and how she approached the creation, “Conceptually, I wanted the video to reflect that the strings were off for this album. No one was controlling it behind the scenes, nothing was holding us back from saying everything we wanted to say the way we wanted to say it, and nothing was stopping us from having it sound the way we wanted it to, even if it didn’t fit into one genre.”
I really don’t know what to say about this. Mostly speechless. I’ve been visiting and working in New York since I was 19 years old and I never thought I’d get to see this. Thank you @spotify !! Hear “kite” on new music Friday now. It’s album release day !!! Aghhhhh 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 #ego #newmusicfriday #spotify

While it’s difficult to pick from such a diverse, yet beautifully cohesive, collection, our favorites on the LP have to be “Just For The Record” and “E.G.O.”
Silvas describes the title-track, “I guess [the song] is an observation about how the world works, and how I think I've worked sometimes, because I'll say I don't want something and then, all of the sudden, I'm looking for attention in some way. I think I'm just as guilty of that as the next person. Especially in the age of social media, we feel like, unless we're being seen, we're not visible, and I think that's very dangerous and scary... Don't love what you do because somebody else says you're great. There's an amazing quote -- somebody said to treat fame and success like the impostors that they are. And I think that's what fame is -- an impostor to creativity”
Thinking about it now.... it was my dog’s total lack of interest in my music that spurred me on. I don’t need you as a cheerleader Barley, you just relax on the couch. #ego #doggetajob #countdown

Interview with Elise Davis
We had the pleasure of interviewing Elise Davis over Zoom video!
Elise Davis's music blurs the lines between genres. It's a sound caught halfway between the confessional storytelling of alt-country and the cinematic punch of pop/rock, molded into a shape by a lifelong musician who began penning tunes at 12 years old. Hundreds of shows and three albums later, she's grown into a road warrior and prolific songwriter whose career highlights — including tours with Ray Lamontagne, co-writes with Maren Morris, and millions of streams for fan favorites like "Last Laugh" — are just as diverse as the records she creates.
She stretches her boundaries once again with Anxious. Happy. Chill., an album of lean, guitar-driven rockers and woozy, lushly-layered love songs. Written during the rush of a new relationship and recorded weeks after her wedding, it's the happiest record she's ever made, stocked with 10 songs that serve as foils to the independent, no-boys-allowed anthems that filled her previous album, Cactus. Davis remains every bit as resilient and empowered as Cactus proved her to be, but she has also traded her old muses — heartache, sadness, and a lone-wolf mentality — for something bolder and brighter.
That said, Anxious. Happy. Chill. was recorded during dark times. Days after wrapping up her honeymoon in Arizona, where she finished writing the album in the Sonoran Desert outside Tucson, Davis headed to producer Teddy Morgan's studio in Nashville. The Covid-19 pandemic was already in full swing, turning Tennessee's capital into a ghost town. Davis and Morgan worked together for a month while maintaining their physical distance, communicating through the glass windows of the studio's isolation booths and playing the majority of the instruments themselves. Drummer Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, the Wallflowers) joined them for a single day to lend the album its unique, percussive pulse. Morgan juggled bass, keyboard, and lead guitar duties. Meanwhile, Davis — who had mostly played acoustic guitar on her previous records — swapped the unplugged instrument for its electric cousin, adding grungy grit and amped-up attitude to songs like "Ladybug" (the album's larger-than-life opener) and "Thirty" (a booming, anxious salute to growing older…and staying young).
Only 300 miles separate Davis' childhood stomping grounds of Little Rock, Arkansas, from her adopted hometown of Nashville. Even so, she's covered an unmeasurable amount of ground since her days as a music-obsessed college student who booked her own tours between classes and spent her weekends on the road. From landing Music Row publishing deals to headlining her own tours across the U.S., she's turned her creativity into fuel, chasing down her own horizon — and her own sound — along the way. Anxious. Happy. Chill. finds her sitting behind the wheel once again, but now there's a companion riding along in the passenger seat, too, bringing a sunnier outlook to the journey.

Lauren Calve Announces "Shift" May 26 Ahead Of Stellar All-Star Debut Album Out Sept 1
Tumblr media
Lauren Calve has been undergoing a metamorphosis in her life, a massive shift.  You can hear it seeping through every song, oozing out of every lyric, and feel the shedding of her skin with every note on her first full-length album Shift out September 1.  The subtle and understated yearning in her voice, the intonation in her haunting vocals and delivery, Calve is longing for something more.  Through the ten-track collection of songs on Shift, she invites the listener to come along on her journey of self-discovery and change, demonstrating a musical masterclass in the art of emotional storytelling. Shift was recorded in Nashville at 3Sirens Music Group with producer, engineer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dex Green (Margo Price, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Allison Russell) along with a stellar line-up of musical talent including Fred Eltringham on drums (ACM Drummer of the Year, Drumeo Country Drummer of the Year, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson), Audley Freed on guitar (Sheryl Crow, The Black Crowes), Robert Kearns on bass (Sheryl Crow, Lynyrd Skynyrd), Marlon Patton on drums (Larkin Poe, Lera Lynn), Jared Reynolds on bass (Ben Folds) and engineer Joe Costa (Ben Folds). The sound reflects the environment in which the songs were written, in quarantine, mainly, and therefore in periods of silence and self-reflection.  Read the full article
