FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with Daniel Barnes
Tumblr media
I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
Welcome to the next article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
My next guest in this series is Daniel Barnes, writer for the Aggretsuko comic, and his original graphic novel The Black Mage. For my chat with him, he chose the Marineford arc, in which Luffy drops into a World Government headquarters in a desperate race against time to save his "brother" Ace from execution.
A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Marineford arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Marineford arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
Dan Dockery: Let’s say that for some reason, I get to the end of Impel Down, just before Luffy & Co. drop into Marineford, and I’m like “I’m done. This is it. I can’t handle any more One Piece. In one sentence, what do you tell me to keep me going?
Daniel Barnes: Why are you stopping before you reach the payoff of everything you’ve read so far?
I like that! How long have you been into One Piece?
When I first started consuming One Piece in earnest, ironically enough, I was in the Navy at the time. It was 2014, and up until that point, my only exposure had been the 4Kids dub on FoxBox.
Tumblr media
Nice. I love a good FoxBox reference. Was it recommended to you? Because I know that, when a lot of people start One Piece, it’s like “FINE. I’ll watch One Piece. You’ve convinced me.”
I don’t consume anime as voraciously as I did back then. Back then, I was an anime vacuum, but I was also in this weird spot where I was semi-depressed. But someone told me, “You gotta try One Piece, it’s the best.” And my first reaction was “Umm, the art style’s kinda weird, though.” But they told me “You’ll get over it,” and the thing that made me finally take that leap was Gurren Lagann, which also had an unusual art style and then became one of my favorite things ever. So I figured I should at least give it a shot.
That’s something I’ve heard a few times. Because in other big series like Naruto and Bleach, the character designs are much more proportionate and straightforward. And I felt the same way...until I watched it, and realized the art style is PERFECT for what it is. So, Marineford is pretty much the halfway point of the series, with characters returning from all over the place. Were there any that you were excited to see come back?
There’s a few of them. I always love it when Mihawk shows up, but I think the big one is Whitebeard. Because up until this point, he’s just sitting around and you know he’s a big deal but you’re always wondering why he’s a big deal. And then you find out in Marineford. I enjoy seeing characters that are kind of defined as the “power ceiling” in an anime universe get to do stuff, and it was cool to see him make the entire world quake.
Tumblr media
I think I called it in an article a “Be Quiet, The Parents Are Talking” character. You’ll go through Luffy getting new power-ups and increasingly strong villains and these seemingly insurmountable admirals with their elemental powers and then Whitebeard comes in, and he’s leaps and bounds above everyone. And like you said, for the most part, he’s just sitting down beforehand.
Yeah, he’s sitting down drinking a giant gourd of sake. His name is Whitebeard, but he doesn’t have a beard. Got a real Hulk Hogan vibe to him. Who is this guy? But then you finally see him after all this time, and that’s the magic of One Piece. You see all of these things over the years and you wonder what part they’ll play and then it finally hits you and their role and strength becomes clear.
Marineford, obviously, is all built around Ace. And what you get out of the arc probably depends on how much you enjoy Ace’s character. How did you feel about him? Did it make you emotional at all? I know he has the one scene with Garp where they talk about finding your purpose in life, and that really got to me, even though I’m not the biggest fan of Ace.
Okay, I think Ace looks cool and I think he has good powers, but I didn’t really care that much when he died. I didn’t really know him enough.
Tumblr media
Were there any characters that you did get attached to or like a lot in Marineford? I know you said you liked Whitebeard and Mihawk, but who was your Marineford MVP? Who shines brightest among all those crazy diamonds?
Okay, so the cop-out answer is probably Luffy. He’s one of the weakest characters there and he manages to survive and he plays such a big role by rallying everyone despite being constantly outmatched. So, objectively, Luffy. But maybe I give it to Coby, because Coby stands his ground against Akainu. He gives you hope that maybe the Marines can change their ways one day and when he refuses to move in front of an Admiral, I thought that was a real stand-out, awesome moment.
So Ace dies, Whitebeard just wrecks Akainu and throws him into a pit, and then, out of nowhere, Blackbeard shows up. Whitebeard beats up Blackbeard and Blackbeard’s forces kill Whitebeard. What do you think about Blackbeard as a villain? Because he’s so unlikeable. He’s underhanded, he whines whenever he gets hurt, he’s super pompous. He has cool powers, but there’s nothing cool about who he is.
He’s super interesting, to me. He has a mystery around him with his two Devil Fruit powers, and he doesn’t really fit into any shonen villain stereotype. He’s an inverse of Luffy, but not in all of the super obvious ways. When you first see him in Jaya, you see him start with basically nothing, and you watch him work through the system and the powers that be, just like Luffy. They’re both trying to achieve the same thing and reach the same goal. But Blackbeard’s methods are different.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Luffy will punch you in the face, while Blackbeard will stab you in the back.
And getting to see that evolution is great, because they easily could’ve just said, boom, here’s the next big bad guy and given him to you without context. But it’s like I said about One Piece earlier, where it shows you stuff over time and gets you to look forward to what will happen with it later. That’s Blackbeard’s whole appeal.
You talked earlier about Coby standing up to Akainu, ready to die for his beliefs. And then Shanks comes and stops the war. How did you feel about that? Because we’re all still waiting to see what his deal is (which as you said is a big part of the continuing appeal of One Piece,) but were you hyped to see him show up?
I thought it was cool, because One Piece has done a good job of establishing him as an awesome guy. He’s a lot like Zero from Mega Man X, where he shows up at the beginning, they imply how powerful he is, they make the main character want to be as strong as him, and then they take him away and only show him sparingly. So whenever Shanks drops by, he's been handled so well that you’re just on the edge of your seat wondering what he’s gonna do.
Tumblr media
So, after the war is over, Jimbei has to remind Luffy that he still has things worth fighting for. And then, the timeskip. Were you aware that a timeskip was coming?
Oh yeah. It’s kind of hard to exist on social media and not get a bunch of these little hints about what’s gonna happen. But that was my goal with One Piece for a little while: I’m gonna get to the timeskip. I have to get there. It’s coming, I know it’s coming, I don’t know when it’s coming, but I just have to reach it.
There are so many big moments in this arc, but looking back at it, are there any moments that stand out as prime One Piece to you?
The obvious one, for me, is when Luffy goes Third Gear and punches the giant out of the way. That’s so cool and such quintessential One Piece. A giant on an arena made of ice and a rubbery kid inflates his fist to make it huge and knocks him around. It’s so weird and it works.
  ONE PIECE LIGHTNING ROUND!
  Favorite One Piece character?
  Usopp.
  Favorite One Piece villain?
  Crocodile.
  Favorite One Piece arc?
  Sabaody Archipelago.
Which Devil Fruit would you eat if you had the choice?
  Bellamy’s Spring Spring fruit.
If you had to live on any island in the One Piece universe, which would you choose?
Does the Gran Tesoro from the Film: Gold movie count? That one’s pretty dope.
  Favorite One Piece fight?
Luffy vs Blueno, when he first reveals the Second Gear.
One Piece moment that made you cry the hardest?
When the Franky Gang beats up Usopp and Nami finds him and Usopp is like “I’m useless. I can’t do anything.” Whenever Usopp gets beaten up, his nose gets all crooked and he loses teeth. There’s so many cartoon-ey visual indicators for Usopp in pain. It got me.
One Piece moment that made you cheer the loudest?
When Luffy punches the Celestial Dragon in the face. It’s so cathartic.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for the next installment of "My Favorite One Piece Arc" as we speak with One Piece Podcast Co-Host and storyboard artist Steve Yurko about his favorite One Piece arc: Baratie!!

The excitement level in this house is working its way off the charts, so having four puppies and three dogs in our midst just seems appropriate.
Dear friends stopped by Sunday night for an impromptu supper and as we talked, we had to raise our voices over the excited yipping of the breakfast pups (Grits was hiding under the raised bed again – which makes his sisters go nuts. I think maybe they believe he really is gone when he does this.).
When Snoopy jumped up on one friend to assist him with his plate, he laughed and gently nudged him away. And when Frankie’s excitement veered towards the out-of-my-control level, they waited while we crated him.
I love that I have the kind of friends who don’t bat an eye at the dog chaos that has become my life.
The Breakfast pups are sweet, goofy, houndish pups who I am truly enjoying. They are affectionate (with tongues instead of teeth!) and happy and as puppies go, pretty easy to manage. Barkalona (aka Snoopy) is still a dreamboat (although he did figure out how to wiggle under the fence yesterday and had a happy runaround, cautiously checking out the horses, but thankfully, coming when I called!)
They are finding their adopters, and as soon as we get their tummies right, they will begin leaving. (Grits is still available if you’re looking for a super-sweet pup with houndish habits!)  Amongst all the puppy-ness, I worry that Billie Jean is being overlooked. This is a really nice dog, people. Heart of gold and whip smart, this dog is a keeper.
Tumblr media
One of the great things about adopting through a foster home is I can give you a pretty good assessment of the dog in question. We’ve lived with Billie Jean for over a month now, so let me give you the rundown on Billie Jean:
APPEARANCE:
Billie Jean is gorgeous. This is the most obvious stat on Billie Jean. Her pictures don’t do her justice. She is simply so much prettier in person (in dog?). The markings, the soft, soft coat, the deep, expressive eyes. She is a looker, plain and simple.
Tumblr media
Ian calls her Kangaroo because she has six toes on her back feet. She does (kind of) resemble a kangaroo in that those big back feet can help her balance on her hind legs for long periods of time. She definitely missed her calling as a circus dog.
Tumblr media
PERSONALITY:
But she’s smart enough to be a circus dog. At times, I feel like she understands English. She certainly can read my mood and sometimes my mind. Billie is a sensitive soul and her devotion is almost embarrassing. Extremely food motivated, in the right hands, she could be quite the trick or agility dog.
She is a quirky pup with a happy energy, who makes us laugh often. There isn’t much she won’t do to win your attention and affection.
Billie Jean loves people – all shapes, sizes, ages. She is shameless in her affection and will roll to her back in a moment to insist you rub her belly.
Tumblr media
Billie Jean loves toys. While she is thrilled to play with you, she can also entertain herself – tossing toys, shaking them, chasing them. I’ve never seen such a self-directed dog. She needs toys for tough chewers as she can decimate a stuffed toy in moments.
Tumblr media
Billie is fine with other dogs, but doesn’t need a fur-sibling in her future home. I’ve grown to understand that there are two classes of dogs – people-dogs, and dog-dogs. Some dogs are more interested in people than other dogs, while some dogs are much more interested in other dogs than people. My dog Frankie is dog’s dog. He is much more focused on other dogs than the people attached to them. He loves to play with every dog we encounter, but as he has become a teenager, he is not-so-sure of people and we have to supervise his introductions. Billie Jean is the reverse, she doesn’t notice the other dogs, she’d much rather interact with people. She gets along with other dogs, but they aren’t her priority.
Tumblr media
TRAINING
Billie Jean is housebroken and crate trained. Those two features are rarely available in the breeder or shelter model. She is a quiet dog – she doesn’t bark at every noise or movement (like my two personal dogs do). She’s a watcher though, taking it all in.
Billie Jean has a very strong prey drive. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend her for a home with cats. She has an instinctive urge to chase anything moving – cats, deer, and cars. While her leash manners are improving (she does best on a front leading harness), her excitement at passing cars is still a challenge. When we see the car approaching, I grab the short handle on the leash and start talking to her, reassuring her that there’s no need to go after this car, it means us no harm. She quivers and shakes, but sits when I ask her to. The car approaches and I can sense her coiling, ready. As it passes, she springs off those kangaroo feet to chase and is cut short by my hand on the leash. We repeat this all along our walk.
I want to say she is getting better, but that’s relative. She’s better with cars that slow down and doesn’t seem inclined to lunge at motorcycles. I haven’t been able to walk her on a sidewalk (we don’t have those things around her), but I wonder if she will be better when there is more space between her and the passing cars — at the speed many locals fly by us, I’m scared too. Still, this will be a challenge for adopters who want to walk her along a road.
Off road, though, she is a gem. She’s an enthusiastic hiking buddy, loves to chase balls and frisbees, and will leap in a stream or pounce on a puddle.
MY THOUGHTS:
Having now fostered nearly 120 dogs, I can confidently say, that Billie Jean is one of the easy ones. She’s not perfect (none of us are), but she is a good dog who will make an awesome family member. It surprises me that Billie Jean has lingered so long in rescue. But we don’t mind because she’s such an easy dog to have around and we adore her.
When wonderful dogs don’t move quickly, I’ve come to believe this is because their real family just isn’t ready for them yet. I know Billie Jean’s family will come – and what a lucky family they must be! If you think YOU might be Billie Jean’s family, you can apply to adopt her here.
And now for the Elephant in the Room (at least my room) – ANOTHER GOOD DOG HITS SHELVES TODAY!
Tumblr media
Eating, sleeping, and focusing for longer than thirty seconds are all impossibilities for me right now. I am leaning on my dogs and happy that I have a houseful. I want to take a second here, to thank YOU, dear blog followers.
It has been your positive reception and your encouragement that prompted me to consider creating the book. Without you, I’m not sure I would have believed there was a market for it. Thank you for allowing me to share my stories here first.
Longtime readers of this blog will recognize the dogs in the book and many of the adventures, but I’ve added much more of the behind the scenes and the tidbits that weren’t quite tidy enough for the blog, especially what was happening in our family during that time. If you read the book, I’d love to hear what you think! I’d also love to meet you at the many, many signings on the launch schedule. I’m working on additional tours and hope to make it further from home eventually.
Here’s the complete schedule as of this moment (in case you’re interested), please come out and see me if you’re nearby.

Eight Travel Bloggers Who Write Books Too
When I was young, my favourite authors were those I felt I knew.
I lived and breathed the Famous Five and Tracey Beaker, wanted desperately to become a dancer in Ballet Shoes, and dreamed of sailing away across the seas in a giant peach. Their creators – people like Judy Blume, Jacqueline Wilson, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and Noel Streatfeild – all had direct access to my heart, because I was certain they were speaking directly to me.
When I was eleven years old, something monumental happened: Harry Potter slipped quietly onto my bookshelf, and his arrival heralded an annual tradition. Each summer for the next seven years, J.K. Rowling whispered magic into my ear while I lay on my stomach, feverishly reading her books as the July heat sweated outside.
Although I don’t think about it so much now, viewing writers as your friends is an extremely valuable part of loving to read. The authors who remained at a distance from me were the ones I couldn’t connect with, either through their words or what they said.
In comparison, I’ll always remember how tangible the world of Harry Potter was; how it changed with me as I grew older, and how comfortable, familiar and ‘right’ it always felt.
That’s what I strive for in my own writing, and that’s what I look for in the work of other writers. A sense of connection between the characters, their creators, and you.
Bridging the gap between blogs and books
The beauty of today’s online, social-media-filled world is that we can actually get to know our favourite writers, in ways we never could before. There’s a sense of absolute joy when you finish reading a fantastic book and Google the author, only to discover they’ve been blogging about their entire writing process, sharing the images which inspire them, or they’re being extremely outspoken on Twitter (anyone who follows J.K. Rowling’s tweets will know what I mean).
And it works the other way, too: plenty of people who’ve spent years writing online have ended up publishing books as a result.
These eight faces above are a collection of my favourite travel bloggers who’ve also become successfully published authors. Some I know personally, others I’ve only ever read from afar – but all of these writers (who all happen to be women – a happy accident!) have an online presence which means their books are an extension of the online selves I already feel I know.
They also all have a beautiful way with words, and individually have each inspired me to become a better writer. Happy #NationalWritingDay, ladies!
1.
‘Mother Tongue’ by Christine Gilbert
Christine Gilbert wrote ‘Mother Tongue’ after spending three years travelling with her husband, young son and eventually their baby daughter through China, Lebanon and Mexico in an attempt to learn the local language of each place.
The book itself is part memoir, part travelogue and part investigation into the ways the brain develops and changes through learning more than one language, both theoretically and in practice. Thanks to my mild obsession with learning Spanish I found this whole concept seriously interesting – especially because Christine seemed stoically determined to challenge herself. Who else dares to undergo a C-section with a team of Mexican nurses when she doesn’t understand what they’re saying?!
Christine’s blog: Almost Fearless
  2.
‘Love with a Chance of Drowning’ by Torre de Roche
Torre de Roche’s book reads a little like a Hollywood movie – so it makes sense that the film rights are being optioned. When Torre met a handsome stranger who asked her to sail across the Pacific with him, her major hesitation was a deep-seated fear of the sea. And boats. And seasickness, and multiple other things besides.
So of course she decided to board a boat for a year, right? What could possibly go wrong?
‘Love With a Chance of Drowning’ is the kind of travel adventure we all dream of having, but what’s even better is Torre’s romantic yet daring attitude, which sees her weathering the roughest of storms. I really hope this book ends up as a film – and I also hope I eventually manage to visit all the locations mentioned!
Torre’s blog: The Fearful Adventurer
  3.
‘How Not to Travel the World’ by Lauren Juliff
If you’ve ever read Lauren’s blog, you’ll know her self-prescribed tagline is being a ‘disaster-prone backpacker’, and her memoir certainly doesn’t disappoint.
‘How Not to Travel the World’ follows Lauren’s backpacking journey through Europe and Asia as she deals with her various phobias (hygiene, food and a general lack of life experience are some of her self-confessed significant issues); navigates her way through various difficulties (a potential tsunami, drunk backpackers and sexual harassment in hostels); and eventually meets a male backpacker named Dave.
I read this book voraciously when on a nineteen hour bus ride from London to Spain before starting the Camino. It’s a perfect holiday read – and great for anyone who’s ever embarrassed themselves abroad.
Lauren’s blog: Never Ending Footsteps
  4.
‘The Yellow Envelope’ by Kim Dinan
The concept behind Kim’s book is one I absolutely love: before she and her husband Brian set off on their world travels, a friend gave them both a yellow envelope. Inside was a substantial amount of money, along with instructions to give the money away in whichever method they saw fit. The only three rules for the envelope?
‘(1) Don’t overthink it; (2) share your experiences; (3) don’t feel pressured to give it all away.’
What follows is not just a retelling of Kim and Brian’s adventures, but an exploration of Kim’s self-reflection and self-doubt as they journey further away from home and become steadily more distant from each other. I recognised a lot of myself in Kim, and felt myself hurrying her onward through each struggle and championing her successes when they came. Anyone who believes in the power of generosity will love this book.
Kim’s blog: So Many Places
  5.
‘Miss-adventures in South America’ by Amy Baker
As someone obsessed with South America, Amy’s book had me hooked. During her three months spent backpacking solo around the continent, she often arrived in cities I knew or booked into hostels I stayed in, and every time I felt the familiar pangs of Latino life – except Amy’s sharp, hilarious and quintessentially British humour made me see my favourite continent in a whole new light.
‘Miss-Adventures in South America’ is ingeniously structured around the best and worst pieces of advice Amy’s ever received (many of which will be familiar to other solo female travellers) and it’s an inspirational read for anyone planning to travel by themselves.
Amy’s blog: Amy Baker Writes
NB: Amy also runs a rather marvellous event called ‘The Riff Raff’, a monthly meet-up in London for debut and aspiring authors to discuss and support each other’s work. I went to the first event and can already see it being a fantastic place to network and learn about new writers!
  6.
‘All Over the Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft’ by Geraldine DeRuiter
Although I haven’t managed to read ‘All Over the Place’ yet, I have no doubt that Geraldine’s book is everything her fantastic blog is: hilarious, witty, and extremely clever.
The book chronicles a five-year period of Geraldine’s world travels, delivering her insights on a range of topics from unemployment and brain tumours to lost luggage, lost opportunities, and generally getting lost in countless terminals and cabs and hotel lobbies across the globe. As someone who often finds themselves getting lost, I’m sure many of Geraldine’s escapades will ring true for me.
Geraldine’s blog: The Everywhereist
  7.
‘The Guilty Wife’ by Elle Croft
In amongst all these travelogues and memoirs is an exciting slice of crime fiction! Elle’s book is still awaiting publication (it’ll be out on 30th November 2017) but as a long-standing reader of her site, I’m extremely excited to see what her debut novel is all about.
Amazon tells me its “a debut psychological thriller that reads as Apple Tree Yard meets Behind Closed Doors, by way of Double Jeopardy”. Sounds good, right?
Elle’s blog: A Bird in the Hand
  8.
Nine Women: Short Stories by Frankie Thompson
I’ve been a long-time reader of Frankie’s wonderful way with words,  so when she began publishing short stories I was first in line to read them.
This particular collection speaks volumes to me: it’s about female experience in all its forms, and Frankie’s ability to convey her characters with subtlety and empathy is really what makes these stories come alive. Particular highlights for me are ‘The Pink Flowers’ and ‘Together, Apart’. If you’re looking for some beautifully told fiction, ‘Nine Women’ won’t disappoint.
Frankie’s blog: As the Bird Flies
Have you read any fantastic books by travel bloggers which I haven’t mentioned here? Let me know in the comments!
