We had a family event in mid-July that was near Philadelphia, so we decided to spend the weekend there to get some Hilton nights and to also spend time with my BIL who lives in the city. Forin Cafe, which is right up the street from where he lives, is a super-cute cafe that slings coffee and cocktails, along with a focused menu of delicious small plates. The beef tartare is particularly excellent, as is the sardine plate, and I was a big fan of their original cocktails.
The US-1 sign with the Baltimore direction (complete with an old Orioles logo!) cracked me up so of course I had to snap a photo of it!

Pizza of the past!
Pizza Brain the pizza culture museum and pizzeria is still alive in my heart. Nobody can take the tasty and sweet memories of delicious pizza and quirky digs paired with Little Babies ice cream and so many hangs with good company.

If I ever travel back in time a visit to pizza brain is on top of the list of places I’d like to revisit.

Happy Birthday, America!
Historic Womrath Park (this is where your freedom began) is located right where Frankford Ave and Kensington Ave meet in Philadelphia, Pa. Legend tells us that Thomas Jefferson read the Declaration of Independence out loud there for the first time, to friends of his whose home was located where the park stands today. Womrath Park, an American Revolution Landmark, was renovated in 2012 where the Declaration of Independence was reread.
The Declaration of Independence is a sacred part of American history. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” -Thomas Jefferson
Enoch Edward’s mansion, which later became the property of The Womrath’s, is where Thomas Jefferson read the Declaration of Independence to the public for the first time, and where the signers dined, and had their first celebration in 1776. The mansion on these grounds, which was torn down many years later and turned into Womrath Park, an American Revolution Landmark, was in its day the resort of the most eminent men of the time, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Monroe, and many others foremost in the history of our country. The Womrath Park was renovated in 2012 where the Declaration of Independence was reread.
Oral history or folklore?
“In anticipation of the Centenial Exhibition’s souvenir-hungry visitors, photographer Robert Newell published views in series, each with a narrative caption. The premise was history; the reality was popular culture. Newell collected and served up ripened Philadelphia lore, with fact often interwoven with fiction. Consider one such story. In the village of Frankford, five miles to the northeast of Philadelphia, lived physician Enoch Edwards. According to local legend (historians have not commented on the matter), Edwards and Thomas Jefferson were distantly related. After the Declaration of Independence had been written and signed, Jefferson ventured out from the city for a visit. On July 8, 1776, in this gazebo behind Edwards’ mansion, Jefferson read the document for the first time in public. Then there was a picnic. ‘Ancient inhabitants of the neighborhood,’ recorded Newell, maintained that this was the first Independence Day celebration. The Edwards family passed the story along to the property’s next owners, the Womraths. And as long as they maintained the elm covered hill with violets, patriotic sightseers were welcome.

Fanny Salter, an eye witness to Thomas Jefferson’s meeting with Enoch Edwards, wrote the following excerpt: “…One day when Mr. Jefferson was on a visit to my uncle, they walked up to this summer-house. He looked round and said: ‘This is the spot on which the signers of the Declaration of Independence dined the day they signed the Declaration.’ …” – Fanny Saltar’s Reminiscences of Colonial Days in Philadelphia.
